  • Pet owners who don't know the difference between owning an animal and caring for one shouldn't be polled at all. They probably shouldn't even be allowed to vote.

  • They didn't include this quote:

"From an image standpoint, nothing empowers a candidate more than seeing him tote a double-barrelled shotgun across the White House lawn," says NRA spokeswoman Lisa Peterson.

    or this one:

"From an image standpoint, nothing humanizes a candidate more than seeing him eating Wheat Thins covered with Velveeta on a blanket on the White House lawn," says Kraft Foods spokeswoman Lisa Peterson.

  • totally! dogs expect to have their packs around. a pet owner who never sees their pet is awful for the animal. (presuming we're talking about dogs; throwing a ball to a cat in the Rose Garden isn't nearly as photogenic.)

I don't think the AP article understands animals at all. Did their pet-owner poll include the question "Do you think it's right to abandon a pet for a year while campaigning for president?" or "Do you think a pet should just be a prop to humanize a politician?" or "How happy is your dog when you come home? How happy would they be if you only came home once every four months?"

  • Otherwise, how do you explain the fact that they seem to completely non-plussed by the fact that with tons of money being raised, they are getting virtually none of it?
Because BMW Direct probably convinces them that the best use for the raised money is another direct mail campaign to raise more money. It's not absurd, really. A campaign spends money on fundraising efforts and when that money comes in it spends part of that on more fundraising efforts. That makes sense, right? The unusual thing here would seem to be that BMW Direct is deciding that almost all of that money should be spent with them, in direct marketing. You'd expect to see some of the received money going into ad production, local ad buys etc.

  • Totally agree that there's nothing at all admirable about John McCain.

I mean, unless you're the sort of person who would admire a guy who signs up for combat duty during the Vietnam war, survives an aircraft carrier fire and bomb blast while trying to rescue another pilot, parachutes from a crippled bomber only to fracture both arms and a leg and nearly drown upon landing, has his shoulder crushed and is bayonetted by a crowd on the ground, is taken into custody at the Hanoi Hilton, lasts six weeks with almost no medical care, spends two years in solitary confinement, endures endless days of torture and dysentery, and finally makes his way home after five and a half years.

Signed, Obama voter and reasonable person.

  • That was different though -- Judith Miller was putting out stories that were friendly to the administration, not sending out unflattering stories that they'd then argue with on the talk shows. (Not that they haven't done that...)

  • I like watching Newsmaxies twist as much as anyone, but come on... Here are the two items that people have added to his bio, in addition to the Obama one, under "Controversies":

'- The liberal Website Talking Points Memo has referred to Kessler's book A Matter of Character as a "lily-gilding portrait of the Bush White House."

'- In response to Kessler's appearance on The Daily Show to promote his book The Terrorist Watch, a commentator at the liberal Website Daily Kos penned the article "Dear Ronald Kessler: Torture is ALWAYS Illegal".'

Wikipedia is not a place to simply post, without context, what other people have said about someone. If any of our favorite progressives' Wikipedia pages were filled with quotes from the Freepers, we'd be incensed. If these sections covered the controversies, it would be a different story. But all the authors really want to write is "Hey Kessler you're wrong." And that's not right.

  • Credibility, editorial independence and three bucks will get a blogger a tall coffee at the Starbucks down the block from their bedroom bunker. Frankly, working on a campaign would give 99% of all bloggers *more* credibility, since they would have actual physical exposure to the political scene. But who cares -- it sounds like a cool job and most people would jump at the chance to work on a campaign. More power to A and M.

  • I don't really understand why Bush et al. are sticking their necks out on this.  They want to 'starve the beast' and shrink the government, so why not spend as much as possible on reconstruction (via contractor wages)?  Plus, it's not like the *government* will be the beneficiary of these savings anyway; *Halliburton* will receive the benefits since they will still charge the government the same price for time/materials while paying out less in wages.

Ah, right.. I answered my own question.
