The Huffington Post linked to this story:http://projects.newsobserver.com/under_the_dome/elections_board_hunting_robocallerIt seems that an unknown person or group has been targeting black voters with robocalls intended to suppress their vote in next week's primary. The following is the transcript: "Hello, this is Lamont Williams....more »

  • What's interesting is that when Hillary used these tactics, Greg was usually played an active part in it, reporting information directly from Hillary conference calls, thereby propagating the controversies in a way which Wolfson himself couldn't have planned any better.

Now that Obama is doing essentially the same thing, Greg seems to be overly concerned all of the sudden about the same media-driven process which he was deeply entrenched in before, shaking his head and tsk-tsking judgementally, saying, look at what those Obama people are doing...

It actually made me laugh out loud. Anyone else notice this?

  • Oh...it's a ZOGBY poll. Crap.

    Yeah those are usually worthless.

And here I was getting my hopes up.

  • Obama seems to do well in the Midwest.

I've heard the talk about states that have a very small and very large AA population going for Obama, but I don't like the narratives being spun around it. Usually it's something along the lines of: states with mixed race populations see minorities as competition, and think more resources will go toward the "competition" if a black man is in office. Either that or straight-up racism.

    I don't think I buy that.

As a midwesterner myself (Mason City, Iowa. Go Big Red!) I'd like to think that it comes from the Midwestern BS meter that went off all through my state during the caucus season. The candidates went through my town a few times while I was visiting family, so I got a chance to see them all, and people just weren't buying the BS that Hillary was trying to lay on them. Trying to act like the "common man" or whatever she does is really insulting and condescending. We're not rubes or hicks. (and as long as I'm ranting I might add that I don't think there's more racism in Iowa than in other places, just because more white people live there. I don't know why people have that idea. It bugs me.)

My point: While Indiana is NOTHING like Iowa (except we both have lots of corn), I wouldn't be surprised if Obama ends up coming out ahead.

  • Record turnout in Guam! They can't count fast enough!

Sure, Maina went for Clinton. They were duped by her "betelnut tax holiday" proposal. But the real question remains: Who will take Hagåtña?

It's gonna be an all night Hagåtña watch...

  • The most offensive part of that video is the weird high five that Kantor tries to give Stephanopolous. Who gives a high five with a fist?! What was he trying to do there?

Do we really want people in office who celebrate good news by giving awkward high fives with their fists?

How's the high five going to play in Indiana?

    Think about it.

  • I thought everyone knew that.

Fox has a great business model. In the days when CNN was the only 24 hour news channel, and they played the same stuff over and over and over, Murdoch was smart enough to examine the market (people who actually watched the same news over and over and over). He saw that it tended to be an older audience, and leaned conservative.

So he designed his channel around that model. I mean, that's not to say that the guy isn't a conservative bastard, but really it's just business. Republicans in office are good for his business.

And that's the problem. When news becomes "just business" its a lot easier for business interests to go unchallenged, and for "unpopular" news not to get covered, and for costs to get cut (less international bureaus, less original reporting and more wire stories, etc).

Then, it becomes hell of a lot easier to end up in dumbass wars, pollute the hell out of the planet, etc.

But its not just Fox anymore. CNN is just as bad. MSNBC is turning into a "boutique" channel for geeks like us.

So the way it evolves is that we tune into news that suits our worldview and don't let anything else in. That might be one reason that a lot of people don't know how popular Fox really is. It just doesn't enter into their worldview at all.

  • You don't know where Guam is? And you call yourself a political junkie...

As goes Guam, so goes the election. It's an old political saw.

    Guam. The bellweather protectorate.

  • whoops sorry about that...what I wanted to say was:

Let's say that Obama wins NC by 1, and he also wins Indiana by 1.

Is the race over at that point? Or does Hillary find some way to spin that?
