I have my doubts that Obama, and many other politicians on both sides of the aisle, are really that faithful or religious, or even believers at all. You have to exhibit Christian piety to get elected. As pure strategy, it's a good way to divide the evangelical vote and neutralize the evangelical opposition.

While I understand that Obama had to make a pragmatic choice here, I agree with A Missouri Voter about the false dichotomy.
Saying the telecoms should be given immunity because the lawsuits would go nowhere is specious. There's still a violation of principle involved. Phone companies are supposed to be accountable to their customers, and they sold out these customers in knowing abrogation of the law.

Technically, the war in Iraq does have something to do with combatting terrorists, but the terrorists are a very small part of the insurgency and opposition. This raises questions about how best to use our resources.
On balance, I don't see how any rational, honest person can argue that our anti-terror resources are best deployed trying to impose democracy on a country that either does not want it or is not prepared to make it work, in light of the genuine terrorist threats in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
