The Wright Amount of Breathing Space
Were those attacks on Obama coming from his former minister? Sounded like it to me. It made me realize that the best resolution of the Wright situation for Obama could actually be to have a dramatic public falling-out between himself and Rev. Wright. ...more »

Non-Partisan FactCheck.org? Not Quite
I have seen repeated MSM references to FactCheck.org this election cycle as a non-partisan organization, most recently on a CNN blog attacking Obama's comments on John McCain's 100-years pledge with a bit of extra gusto. So I thought I better do a little...more »

Dictatorship of the Commentariat (2nd Attempt)
Maybe I was just drunk last night, but it seemed that, as usual, the media commentariat entirely missed the point of what happened in this debate. <p>Obama, often visibly frustrated with the lines of questioning being thrown his way, tended to...more »

Straight talk derailed: Critical Media Coverage of McCain Surfaces in Unlikely Places
John McCain has been subject to some slightly more intense media scrutiny from some interesting places today. The American Banker (subscription) states that his “views on the housing crisis appear to be evolving quickly” before pointing out that McCain previously stated a desire...more »

Kondracke: Obama Wins ‘Petraeus Primary’
Morton Kondracke's column in today's Roll Call commends Barack Obama for "his agile performance" in recent congressional hearings on Iraq. I believe it's subscription only so I provide generous excerpts: "Of the three presidential candidates displaying their intellectual wares in questioning...more »

3 Key Points on Obama's Economic Speech
I wanted to highlight three points from Obama's economic speech which marked his approach to the crisis as vastly superior to the alternatives put forth by the other presidential candidates. This speech should put any questions regarding Obama’s policy substance...more »

The number of otherwise respectable-looking people reading that rubbish on the metro would probably shock you. Luckily those folks are going to get chased out of town come november.

So obviously you realize that one can fail spectacularly despite experience and mentoring...Being community-focused rather than individual focused, I don't think Obama is really a mentoree but more of a liminal figure. Obama has a special kind of experience with his background as a community organizer. If you really think about the skills developed in that role, tell me that might not be exactly the skills that America needs in their president to make it a better place. Obama is a risk, but isn't that what it's all about - if we didn't dare to take risks, that would make us conservatives, by definition.

Welcome to the new paradigm Billy. Obama is Google, Hillary is Microsoft. In the new world, experience isn't all it's cracked up to be. An upstart teenager in a garage can change the world nowadays and being an expert in the old ways of doing things is a handicap. Vision, innovation and competence are key. Obama is rebranding the Democratic party and leading the party in his direction while Hillary is still using the same messages, like a retired general always fighting the last war. He may have spent his whole career “running for office” but he has run an effective campaign and bested Hillary Clinton at that game despite her numerous initial advantages.
If I remember, George W. wasn’t vastly experienced but didn’t exactly lack it. It was conveniently forgotten that his experiences were often tinged with failure. Unfortunately, Hillary is that candidate in this election – see healthcare.

And she says "wider" so she's obviously calling them fat. That's the only way it makes sense since a coalition of working and hard-working fat white americans is a rather exclusive group.

I saw this story in the midst of the gas tax brouhaha. Funny too since stability in Nigeria would knock the socks off a gas tax holiday in terms of bringing down the price of gas.

That's domestic consumption. There's a whole world out there thirsty for oil.
Face it folks, the chorus may be singing for it, but gasoline is never going to get any cheaper, ever again.
With oil at $122 a barrel and heading skywards we'll need a lot more than an $0.18 of pandering to deal with this problem.Posted at May 6, 2008 1:34 PM in response to Gas Tax Ballyhoo

This kind of language plays badly outside the beltway, but here in town it is par for the course.

Yeah, it's only what someone who's actually on her campaign staff said about the residents of a state she's currently pandering to since they're about to hold a primary. What does that matter?
