Here's to a complete recovery for Brian.
DC has now welcomed him as a true Washingtonian, because the locals all know that this title is only achieved after one has been mugged here.
I think Brian might get a special status though for taking 3 bullets...

Cheers. I'm turning 25 in August and have put off Law School for that exact reason: I don't want to live my job. So many of my friends love their jobs but work crazy hours and cede to their position a loyalty that, to me, seems to trump family at times.
When you are afraid to take vacation time that YOU EARNED for fear of what your employer might think well that to me is just crazy. But when I question this it's always "i love my job" or "i'm going to bust my ass to get to management and then i won't have to work like this" .... i just don't know, I've been able to walk away from jobs like that and boy did it work out better for me.
I think tenaciousd put it really well in regards to strategy for the young people...it's exactly what I did and now I've landed a job in a secure industry with great pay, benefits and an employer who understands that my life does not begin and end in this office building!

I cannot agree. Lobbyists play a VERY important role in Washington...an all out ban would cripple information streams to our representatives' staff and we'd end up getting even shittier legislation than we already have.
1) Legislator's staffs do much of the work of writing bills
2) *Most* or Many Staffers are morons.
3) Since many groups (unions, businesses, counties - yes your county has a lobbyist here in washington, etc.) realize that a lot of the staffers working on their issues are morons, they need to make sure the morons have the information and education on their side of the issue.
This being a democrazy Staffers need to have the opportunity to hear from all sides so even the bad guys (portrayed very well in Thank You for Smoking)
A viable option is to ban bundled donations, or even go as far as banning PAC's as well - as these are the only methods they have to get money to the legislators at this point assuming that money=influence

while in today's climate it may not apply...whenever I think about that it reminds me of this little factoid:
"Two men were elected President directly from the U.S. Senate. The first was Warren G. Harding, who served in the Senate from March 4, 1915, until his resignation, effective January 13, 1921, having been elected President.
The other sitting Senator to ascend to the presidency was John F. Kennedy, who served in the Senate from January 3, 1953 to December 22, 1960, when he resigned to become President."

As a Virginia citizen, while the prospect of Webb as Veep is compelling and could tie up some ends on Obama's ticket (DOD/Military Experience) I would feel much better if he remained in his Senate seat and be joined by Mark Warner in our upcoming election...Warner would also be a good Veep prospect (has great bipartisan cred. from his years as VA Governor and is strong w/ business interests)
I just feel in the long run Congress and the US (and Virginia) is better off with having Webb and Warner in the Senate.
