  • Americans Have "Every Reason To Doubt" Whether McCain Can Keep Us Safe

It was remarkable to see John McCain's appaling response to a speech in which the president of the united states attacked a fellow American politician from the safety of foreign soil. These are serious issues that deserve a serious debate, not the same tired partisan rants we heard today from George Bush and John McCain. Senator McCain has pledged to run a civil campaign based on issues, while at the same time smearing Senator Obama through guilt-by-association tactics that the American people are tired of, and quite frankly deserve better. The stakes are too high.

John McCain and George Bush are afraid to talk to our enemies. John McCain, like George Bush, thinks the only solution to the world's problems is military force, to shoot first and ask questions later. This was the same approach that got us into the disasterous Iraq war which has ravaged our economy, cost the lives of over 4000 American sons and daughters, and countless millions of Iraqis, strengthened Iran's standing in the region, and yes-has aided and strengthened Al Qaeda by serving as a distraction from the war on terror.

It would be a wonderful thing if we lived in a world where we don't have enemies. But that is not the world we live in, and until Senator McCain understands that America's power comes not only from military force, but also through the force of our ideals and our values, the American people have every reason to doubt whether he has the strength, judgment and determination to keep us safe."

  • I like Claire. I really do.

But lets not fool ourselves. She's not ready for the job just yet.

Mayeb one day, she will be, but right now, i think she can be an invaluable ally of president obama in the senate.

besides, having two freshman senators on the same ticket is a really bad idea.

  • isnt it interesting how bhutto claims OBL is dead like its old news and no one in the us press or media even bothers to pick up on it.

i mean, i dunno if bhutto was right, but i dont think she would knowingly lie about it so her comments definitely deserve some scrutiny and investigation.

  • John McCain is an idiot. The judges didn't overrule or force anything on to the people.

As usual, the lazy critics are uninformed. The California court has not over-ruled the legislature: in fact, the legislature has voted for full marriage equality twice already. And the court has not "created" a right to marriage for gay couples. It has argued that if the state has conceded that domestic partners should have, under state law, all the benefits and responsibilities of married couples, the designation of a separate and distinct category must be suspect, under strict scrutiny, to the inference that the designation is based on a desire to deny gay couples equal dignity and recognition.

  • Senator Kerry,

I think you need to have a talk with Senator Reid about Holy Joe.

I'm just sayin, he's not much of a democrat anymore and it seems silly to me that he should get to keep his committee chair and his seniority while undermining the democratic party and the party's nominee.

  • i agree. as a gay man, its good to know i'm entitlted to the same rights as everybody else (at least in california) but i'm also worried that this will motivate McCain's base and give them a reason to mobilize. LEt's face it, mccain wingnut base never liked him and arent very enthused with his candidacy. but this is just the sort of thing that will give them something to rally around.

they couldn't have waited till after november??

oh well...the only way past it is through it. and we have to trust the people not to get distracted this time. the stakes are too high

  • this could motivate the wingnut base to get up and out for John McCain. its probably the only thing that could. They really don't like him, but they hate the idea that i might be able to marry the man i love someday.

couldnt they have waited till after november to announce this?

i mean...this is just bad timing. Gay marriage in an election year= trouble.
