  • The last time I heard Republicans saying things like that was when Bill Clinton won the presidency. And, yes, Bill did co-opt some of their issues, but then as now, it was just sour grapes and a way for Republicans to claim that: "They're only winning by being like us."

Heck, at the time, I kind of believed the Republicans. I spent much of the 90s mad at Bill for being too Republican. But living through 2 terms of Bill's economy and 2 terms of Dubya's is enough to prove to me that even if Bill did triangulate, he maintained crucial differences.

Anyway, when Republicans claim their issues have been stolen that's music to my ears. It means they're losing.

  • Yes, it's disturbing. But really, given that the rules are the rules, you have to be angrier at the Democratic Party over this than you are at Hillary. One thing we all need to insist on after wed win the general election is that the Democratic party reforms its procedures to entirely eliminate the super-delegates and to explicitly require that pledged delegates remain faithful to the voters who assign them to the convention.

  • Well, the point here isn't to protect banks who made bad loans. That's just a side-effect of the real intention -- to protect home owners who were in many cases sold bad loans. If the only way to punish the banks is to let them foreclose on innocent people, then I'd rather not punish the banks.

In your posts on this topic you've way too blithely assumed that renting is just as good an option as owning for these people. It isn't.

Keep people in their homes first, worry about whether or not the banks get their just desserts later.

  • If you have a locked in price deal for a commodity, as China does with oil from western and Sub-Saharan Africa, then you only effect the open markets by draining the demand side and driving up the costs for everyone else. There's nothing about the supply/demand rule that precludes side deals and that's what China has-- the rest of us are paying for China's clever side deals the same way that the common shareholder pays for the discounted shares that corporate execs pay when they're given restricted stock.

  • No, because Buchanan predates Wright on the national scene.

It'd be more accurate to ask if Wright is a later incarnation of Buchanan. But the answer would be no because Wright has had to deal with true racism in ways that Buchanan has not.

  • Great post, Jonathan.

The unreported part of this is that China isn't paying the market price for oil. China made a very clever move through its state controlled companies -- it went into western and sub-Saharan Africa and agrteed to build or fund infrastructure in ezxchange for discounted oil. So all talk of China driving demand is nonsense. They are not paying $120 a barrel. They cut deals that were discounted to market price back when the market price was well below $80.

  • But if he raises interest rates to 6% right now, with the economy so weak, the rest of us will be out of business as well. Liquidity is the engine.
