  • If McCain is 5'9" then I'm Kevin Garnett. 5'7" tops and he stoops. I'd be surprised if he came up to Obama's shoulder.

  • Pretty clearly his goal is to become Sec Def or Sec State in the McCain administration.

  • I have never seen a candidate rest a campaign on his service more than McCain. Unfortunately, he will quickly learn that Americans do not vote biography. That is why Ronald Reagan defeated Naval Academy graduate and submarine commader Jimmy Carter. That's why Bill Clinton defeated WWII heroes George HW Bush and Bob Dole. That's why George W Bush defeated John Kerry, who left Vietnam with a Siver Star and three Purple Hearts. Americans do not vote for a candidate's war record.

But keep talking about Vietnam. Please.

  • This is turning into the perfect example of the electoral incompetence of the GOP. They appoint a sitting rep from a safe seat, expecting to hold that seat and get a strong incumbent to run for the Senate. (Remember this is the seat where Babour delayed announcing a replacement for Lott in an effort to avoid a quick special election.) They are now in serious danger of losing both the House seat and the Senate seat. Wicker is in danger of going from a safe House seat to out of office. Just an awesome development.

  • Greg should be getting fewer allegations of bias now that he is clearly biased against McCain. (Of course that bias is entirely warrented and based solely on the facts, but it's a certain kind of bias all the same.)

  • Can we also agree that if a Democrat had been whipsawed by a prior statement like this, the press would be full of stories about its amateurish campaign and how they're not ready for prime-time? Package this together with all of McCain's newly discovered dictator lobbyists and the story writes itself.

    Waiting for those stories in 5 . . 4. . .

  • Shhhhh! Don't remind them!

More to the point, this is exactly why Senators have had trouble running for president since 1960. They have long histories of spouting off on issues and have often cast thousands of votes that can be used against them. While Obama's relatively shorter resume may be a weakness, it is more than off-set by the gems in McCain's history. It's especially bad for an opportunist like John Sidney.

  • John McCain on June 20, 2005:

"What I think we should do," McCain told NBC's "Meet the Press," "is wait until we achieve the successes, then celebrate them, rather than predict them. Because too often that prediction is not proven to be true."

Maybe he should take his own advice.
