  • I just find it ridiculous that this is a news story while the Mcain family not paying there taxes on a California home for four years go's basically unnoticed by the media.

  • P.s. From reading the comments above I will also say this in response to an anticipated people will die response. Yes they will. People die every day from all sorts of things. Cheese burgers kill more people every year then guns do in ten (only counting within US borders).

You don't outlaw cheese burgers, you educate people, give them better options and make sure they have health care. I know a cheese burger is not going to blow anyones head off, but just look at all the people next time you are in McDonald's and ask yourself how many will die before 50 from massive heart failure.

Laugh all you want but fast food has been putting millions of tiny bombs in all our hearts for years. Millions served daily. Millions one step closer to death daily. It may be slower but it's pretty damned effective.

All I'm saying is there are better options to controlling violence then gun control. Just like we could all have a salad every once in a while. Options and freedom. That's American.

  • Can't help you there. I'm happy with the decision. I enjoy recreational shooting, including a sport that involves old west shooting. I would never own a handgun for self defense because I would never kill anyone and that's kind of the purpose when it comes to self defense and guns.

I think the real way to deal with gun violence is three fold.

One, proper parenting. School shootings are a new thing, guns have aways been available to anyone with the wherewithal to get one, however what is fairly new to our society is the extremely high percentage of children being raised by the boob tube. Without proper family support the stuff on TV can be very damaging to a child's psyche.

Two, take care of poverty. People with real options are less likely to turn to a violent life style.

Three, Punish the deed. Much stronger punishments for any crime involving the use of a gun.

Whether intended or not, owning a gun has become a right over more then a hundred years of people being allowed to own them. However I do feel that getting a gun should become harder. I would even support a mandatory psych eval. I also think a final important step is to stop the trafficking of illegal weapons.. most bad guys don't get there weapons from Bobs guns on main. They get them from the back of a van. Guns are trafficked just like drugs. Drugs are illegal and still every city has a drug problem. Guns won't go away just because they are banned.

I don't know, the idea of our government holding the only weapons in our society kind of scares me. Especially after the last seven years. Call me a tin foil hat type of guy but remember this nation was created by a bunch of people using guns to overthrow an oppressive government. If the British had made sure we had no weapons to fight them we would not be the United States of America. We would still be a colony.

  • Me personally, I'm not as worried about the Telecoms as I am the president. Reading the bill I see nothing to indicate that president Bush has been pardoned for his mis use of the Telecoms.

If we really think about it most people would (if not pre disposed to distrusting him) believe the president when he said, "it's ok if you do this." So on a small level I believe Bush should be getting sued as apposed to the companies. They should have known better, however the president issued the initial order for the violations of the constitution.

This bill does not say it is OK for a president to violate the constitution, only that if a business follows the orders of said president they should not be held financially accountable.

In order to pardon the Telecoms Bush has to admit that he ordered them to place the taps. We could then check to see if he had gone through the correct channels for those taps. If he didn't he is admitting to a constitutional violation of the tapped persons rights, not only opening himself up to lawsuit but also personally admitting to an impeachable offense.

I am far more interested to see what is done with his admittance of wrong doing then what happens to the Telecoms.

  • However I do wonder if telling the telecoms that they have immunity as long as the president said it was legal points the finger squarely at Bush himself as the one breaking the laws.

After all, in order to get the Telecoms there immunity Bush has to admit that he himself broke the law.

Catch 22 anyone? I wish I could beleive our congress was that smart.

  • I don't think she's racist either. I do think she was insensitive in putting one groups problems over another.

I think as Obama supporters we are overly sensitive to this topic because the argument gives the less informed voter the idea that Obamas' nomination was somehow illegitimate. This election is too important for anything to stand in the way of Mcains loss.

  • Destor, you make a good ppoint however I must point out one thing.

I personally criticized Ferraro because in her attacks against sexism she said that Obama would have lost long ago if he weren't black.

I question a persons merits as a person who is out there fighting the good fight for equality when they will say that a black mans accomplishments are only achieved because of his race.

I just feel she was hypocritical in saying this while trying to say a womens accomplishments were being belittled because she is a women.

  • Miri11, why do you feel like it's necessary to try and use your vote as a tool? If Mcain is elected I will not be surprised and I will know it was because of people like you.

And you will get exactly what YOU deserve. I on the other hand will sleep tight knowing my hands are free from the blood.

Vote how you want but stop trying to beat us over the head with it so you can have some grand I told you so moment before Mcain continues the whole sale destruction of everything this nation stands for.

Also, Obama fired the Monster staffer. And he never called them racists. His backers may have, but as Clinton supporters were so fond of pointing out, you just can't control what supporters say and those things can not be attributed to the candidate.

But since people are naturally hypocrites I guess you won't see the point there.

*** Adding to the Mcain anti women list is his decision to vote that insurance companies have to cover Viagra but should not have to cover birth control.

    Nice.
