There has been a lot of political analysis in the past 3 weeks. I just wanted to go back to the basics as only an independent, fiscally conservative, republican leaning, Obama suporter can do. 1. Obama would spend less than...more »

  • >Any commentary that doesn't understand the context of voting present in Illinois isn't worth the paper it is written on.

    We agree on that!

  • It's all bullshit. McCain is right, I felt a similar feeling after visiting Europe for 2 months. Certainly he must have experienced far more potent a feeling than I. (and I loved Europe)

I agree with Michelle, I honestly hadn't really been proud of our political system until Obama and Ron paul came along.

Crucify me if you want but I agree with both of their statements.

Posted at June 20, 2008 4:40 AM in response to McCain: "I didn't really love America until I was deprived of her company."

  • This might devolve in being an argument over words but I enjoy the exchange :)

    >Have you ever convinced someone (a conservative) by being uncertain and too flexible in your positions?

It's not about being uncertain or flexible. It's about being truthful. Why do you think bush has a 17% approval rating? Conservatives are intelligent people they just see things differently. If you want to get them to vote for Obama you need to convince them with facts and figures. Just like any other thinking adult.

Certainly there are going to be a group of inbreeds that will believe you based on the conviction of your tone of voice but that's true for democrats and republicans. You're goal is to convince the thinking man.

  • I agree we need an offense.

    >Isn't time we used the same uncompromising tone and moral certitude?

No, this doesn't convince people this solidifies people in their beliefs.

Have you ever convinced people by being an asshole? You might make your friends happy but as for educating your fellow man? You fail. Try again.

  • >If the two of them won't do this, I'm going to be left wondering just what it was we were all fighting so passionately about during the primary months.

We are fighting because Ron Paul can't get elected president in 2008. We see Obama as the next best thing and hope that the republicans will wake up and get back to something resembling a party that wants small government and freedom.

Posted at June 20, 2008 3:17 AM in response to Barack and Hillary Should Get To Work

  • You and I read the same article, I'm not sure what everyone else read. This was the best piece Brooks has penned in a while. The blogs have been going on about "bambi" for almost 8 months now, this was a direct hit at them. If the democrats don't understand what kind of political firestorm they are electing they will find out soon enough. Obama is for real, he is not Kerry or Gore, he is a new brand of politician and he will change the system.

Posted at June 20, 2008 3:11 AM in response to David Brooks Gets it

  • I'll get shit for this, and not only because i'm generating content... You are too hard on brooks. He represents the independents and Obama is not talking straight. Brooks is demonstrating that Obama isn't consistent nor does he have the iron hard integrity that everyone loves. That's not why I'm voting for Obama, I know he isn't perfect. There are a host of issues I believe he's completely off on. However I believe he's demonstrated an ability to reach out to people that know more than himself and come to terms with policies that he formally didn't agree with. The gas tax holiday is a great example. Brooks is right, but it also makes me want to vote or Obama more. We need a leader, someone that is intelligent, pragmatic, and has integrity.

  • Let me just throw this out there then and sorry I won't be able to back this comment up because I have to go to help my dying grandma fight cancer.

You Post half an article, with nothing to add, and then run. I'm calling you out, you have no self respect, you have no dignity, you are a coward, you might as well be part of fox news.

Posted at June 20, 2008 2:50 AM in response to Gee, David Brooks, I wish I had said that

  • Way to leave out the last part. I'm sure it was by accident. Here let me help you:

"I have to admit, I’m ambivalent watching all this. On the one hand, Obama did sell out the primary cause of his professional life, all for a tiny political advantage. If he’ll sell that out, what won’t he sell out? On the other hand, global affairs ain’t beanbag. If we’re going to have a president who is going to go toe to toe with the likes of Vladimir Putin, maybe it is better that he should have a ruthlessly opportunist Fast Eddie Obama lurking inside.

All I know for sure is that this guy is no liberal goo-goo. Republicans keep calling him naïve. But naïve is the last word I’d use to describe Barack Obama. He’s the most effectively political creature we’ve seen in decades. Even Bill Clinton wasn’t smart enough to succeed in politics by pretending to renounce politics. "

Why don't you actually say why you don't like Obama instead of pointing to half an article. Coward.
