  • Clearly she has been pushing for this for at least a month, with Bill doing behing the scenes pressuring. It's another instance of the campaign overreaching and playing its cards poorly.

Joseph --- the reason she wants the VP job is that it carries a ton of perceived prestige, even if doesn't carry a lot of inherent authority. In addition, HRC would be the first female VP; those types of things matter to her. She also would probably want to play a Dick Cheney role -- i.e., to weild a lot of power behind the scenes -- rather than a Dan Quayle role.

  • Yeah, no one in Michigan voted for Obama. Sure. Oh, and no one voted for anyone in caucuses either. HRC lost by 4% of the Pledged Delegates and a wide margin of the Supers. It was not actually all that close.

  • Dig the Nixon reference. Quite appropriate vis-a-vis HRC. I would imagine Obama people will turn to McCain.

  • This is simply false -- the electoral college projections are in conflict and historically useless at this point in the game Moreover, HRC has done unforgivable harm to Obama's chances by repeatedly race baiting, arguing that Obama can't win, arguing that he is not ready, etc. long after it was clear to anyone who could add that Obama had won. So, she can hardly say "I told you so," when she is a contributing factor to his defeat. Finally, HRC is toxic. She could never win a general election. So, even if Obama loses, it doesn't mean HRC would have won.

  • Funny.

  • I don't see the connection between refusing to go with McCain to Iraq and an "unwillingness to consider alternative scenarios." Generally, I've noticed your posts are kind of low on logic.

There's no question that, whatever the exit strategy, empowering Iran is a problem to be guarded against (although that is probably unavoidable), and we have to make sure ethnic cleansing does not occur. Other than that, I can't think of other goals that are in the U.S. interest. "Dignity" and "success" are pretty amorphous as goals. McCain has offered similarly undefined benchmarks for success, and as a practical matter he offers nothing other than a continuation of the current strategy, which -- apart from anything else -- is an unacceptable waste of money. Obama has offered withdrawal, as soon as possible, but has promised to step in if things unwind. That seems to be the best of a pretty lousy set of options. What your average American thinks, I have no idea. My sense is that they want the War to end and don't care particularly about the terms.

  • I agree 100%. It is far better to win a nomination after the fact by changing the rules, than by winning elections. Seriously, I pity you diehard HRC people. You only care about getting your person in by any means necessary. Apart from anything else, it reflects a shallowness and lack of seriousness towards democratic principles, and a glib disregard for harm HRC will do to the Democratic Party if this strategy is successful.

  • I don't know if it is bias or not. He seems like a decent enough guy to me. I just think he is either (1) overly credulous and not very bright; or (2) over-compensating for (a) the fact that most of the people on this website and elsewhere on the blogosphere are Obama supporters or (b)his own Obama sympathies and trying to appear "fair." In any case, I agree with his tendency to take things HRC's people say at face value. It comes off as a bit gullible.

  • I am starting to hear a lot of Clinton supporters wish HRC will drop out, in part, bc the more she stays in, the worse they look for having supported such a person. It becomes embarrassing.
