  • What I like about the other candidate.

I've seen a lot of efforts at "unity" threads.  Though we all have good intentions (or okay, most of us), it seems to be a hard thing to make work at this stage of the game.  No one really wants...more »

  • A couple more news cycles like that, and I'll stop donating to Obama.

'Cause my momma taught me not to pile on when someone is down, defenseless, and disoriented -- even if he is a Republican.  Since Obama has been cleaning the floor with this guy, I'm inclined to be charitable and give...more »

  • Yes. Immunity could mean that we don't get to fully document and prosecute Bush's spying program.

At least not in the theater of the courts. Historians will get all the details eventually.

That's a loss. But it's not worth going to the mat over. We need to shift gears from defense to offense. Starting in Jan 2009, our job is no longer to "stop Bush." It's to govern and lead the nation -- the whole nation. Even if we had the legal tools to spend our time digging up all Bush's crimes, it wouldn't be a good use of public authority, because it would fritter our mandate away divisively. Let the historians bury Bush, and use his errors to teach future generations about the Constitution. Our job will be to unite the nation and govern it, and I think Obama is beginning well.

  • I don't think it's a politically viable option. The symbolism is not good: the two male candidates join forces, leaving Hillary sitting over by the wall.

  • I do agree with loki, however, that it's silly for us to censor ourselves on this blog because we fear that dissent will somehow give ammunition to Republicans.

The audience here is pretty small, and pretty full of its own opinions, and the outside world really doesn't care whether there's "chum" in our comment threads or not. I hang out here because I learn something from the discussion, not as a form of political action or agitprop. When I want to engage in political action, I phonebank, or talk to family members who aren't political junkies.

But of course the "fascist" stuff is goofy.

  • Back in the glory days, we used to laugh at posts with 7 recs. In April, my friend, you could get 7 recs just by sneezing. A post like

    "A - Hillary Clinton - choo!"

Would have got, like, twelve or fourteen recs.

I think it might be straight-talking mavericks from AZ -- or possibly, Sunday morning chat shows.
