You may recall that Senator John McCain's (R) Senate committee helped uncover lobbyist and former Georgia lieutenant governor candidate Ralph Reed’s (R) dirty dealings with Jack Abramoff.
Now McCain is throwing his weight behind the man who slayed Reed in last month's primary, Casey Cagle. McCain will hold a lunch fundraiser in October for Cagle, who faces Democrat Jim Martin.
In a piece which notes that "some are preparing" Ralph Reed's "political obituary" after his Georgia defeat, today's Times has an interview with Reed, who says:
“First bids for elected office are always tough, and I am not the first person to lose a first campaign.”
The piece has other interesting tidbits: When the first returns came in Tuesday night, Reed laughed at pundits who said the race was still up for grabs. And Republican National Committee chair Ken Mehlman says he's looking forward to working with Reed in the future.
Reports are coming in from across Georgia this afternoon on the Republican lieutenant governor’s primary, and some of them are pretty darn funny, actually -- though I doubt that Ralph Reed (R) is laughing. Indeed, if these anecdotal accounts are to be believed, Reed appears to be, shall we say, underperforming.

I was voting this morning in Dunwoody (a Fulton County precinct) and woman came in to vote and, when asked whether she was voting Democratic or Republican, she refused to answer, saying she was “undeclared.” The poll workers and I began explaining to her that it didn’t work that way in a primary, that she had to vote in one or the other and mentioning the different races in the two primaries. She finally said, “well, which race is Ralph Reed in as I want to be sure to vote against him!”
