Poll: Thompson Tied With Giuliani

For the first time by our reckoning, a new national poll finds that Rudy Giuliani is no longer the sole frontrunner in the GOP primary.

Fred Thompson, who just entered the race, has edged into a tie with Rudy in a new Rasmussen Reports poll released this morning. Each candidate pulls 24% of the vote in the survey.

Rasmussen suggests that Thompson's success is coming almost entirely at the expense of John McCain, who has sunk to a meager 11% -- down from 14% a week ago and 17% in May. Rudy's 24%, meanwhile, represents a statistically insignificant difference from the 23% he pulled in the last Rasmussen poll. More soon.

CO-GOV: Voting Problems Plague Denver

The Denver Post reports:

Election day in Denver began with long lines, as computer problems appeared to make it difficult for workers at vote centers to check registrations against the master list.

By 8 a.m., lines stretched up to a city block at places like the Colorado Convention Center, Corona Presbyterian Church and Denver Botanic Gardens.

At the Convention Center, though 100 people stood in line, only 25 percent of the voting machines were in use at any given time, as poll workers tried to get verification of voter registration from computers that were frequently down.

Dejected downtown workers attempting to vote before work could be seen walking away from the polls as the line barely moved.

CO-GOV: Experts Say GOPer Beauprez's Attacks On Dem Rival Are "Misleading" And "Irresponsible"

GOP gubernatorial candidate Bob Beauprez has been blasting Dem candidate Bill Ritter for being soft on crime by pointing to stats showing that while Ritter was Denver attorney general, his office accepted 61,000 felony cases, and sent 12,000 felons -- a fifth of overall cases -- to prison. The problem? By almost three percentage points, Ritter sent more felons to prison than the average AG country-wide, according to Justice Department records. Criminal justice expert Kathleen Maguire says of Beauprez's claim: It's "such a gross oversimplification that it's irresponsible" and "exploits the public."

CO-GOV: "Both-Ways Bob" Reinforces the Meme With Petition Stance

On Friday Representative Bob Beauprez, who is running for governor, publicly changed his position on Colorado’s Amendment 38, a “petition rights” ballot measure that would make it easier for citizens to collect signatures and challenge local government decisions by referendum.

Beauprez won the endorsement of influential anti-tax crusader Douglas Bruce by supporting the amendment earlier this year, when he still faced a primary challenge. Bruce was the driving force behind the passage of Colorado’s TABOR state spending limits by referendum in 1992. Bruce has now rescinded his endorsement of Beauprez in his run for governor.
