AZ-GOV: Munsil Mailer Uses 9/11 Images To Attack Napolitano

Check out this new mailer from longshot GOP candidate Len Munsil against Dem governor Janet Napolitano: It uses images of 9/11 to make the case that Napolitano "does not care" about terrorism. Basic argument: The 9/11 terrorists had U.S. driver's licenses; Napolitano supports driver's licenses for illegals; therefore, she isn't serious about terrorism. The Napolitano campaign's response: "For Munsil to put his name on such a piece is to show what kind of governor he would be: reckless and unqualified." The mailer from Munsil -- who's down 43 points in the latest poll -- hasn't gone out to voters yet, but the Arizona Republic obtained an advance copy. View the full mailer after the jump.

AZ-GOV: Munsil Vows To Tear Down 9/11 Memorial If Elected

In what has to be considered a political gamble, long-shot GOP candidate Len Munsil vowed yesterday to tear down the Arizona 9/11 memorial if elected Governor because he disagrees with the tone of the content, especially the inclusion of the phrase "you don't win battles of terrorism with more battles.” Speaking in front of the memorial yesterday, Munsil used the opportunity to assail Dem incumbent Janet Napolitano as “so far into the ideology of ‘blame America first’ that she did not even notice how politicized this memorial is.” In return, both Napolitano and Billy Shields, the chairman of the Arizona Sept. 11 Memorial Commission, criticized Munsil for using the memorial as a “political ploy” in his campaign for Governor. "For him to politicize the 9/11 memorial like that is just shameful. I just think it's very sad,” Napolitano told the Arizona Republic. More after the jump.

AZ-GOV: GOPer Munsil Challenges Napolitano To A Duel, Well,...A Blog-Off

In what may be a first, GOP candidate and local internet tough Len Munsil posted a blog-off challenge yesterday to Gov. Janet Napolitano on his website. With no live debates scheduled before the election, Munsil is seeking to meet the incumbent in cyberspace for “a free-flowing discussion of the issues, with points and counterpoints, unfiltered by the media.” In his blog post announcing the challenge, Munsil used the opportunity to insult Napolitano’s website, calling it “lame,” while also boasting of his own internet traffic. Whether Napolitano will accept this virtual version of pistols at dawn is unknown at the moment, but rest assured that Election Central will keep you posted.

AZ-GOV: Pro-Abstinence Republican Admits To Pre-Marital Sex

This happened a few days back, but it didn't get any attention and really deserves a look. GOP gubernatorial candidate Len Munsil has long been a big backer of abstinence-only education. But it turns out that Munsil is not exactly a good spokesman on the issue: Late last week he admitted to having sex before marriage. What's more, it turns out he and his wife conceived their son before getting married, according to a statement released by Mr. Munsil. The Munsils claim their failure to wait until marriage has only strengthened their commitment to the abstinence education.

New Voters Could Change Immigration Debate in Arizona

There are 303,600 legal immigrant in Arizona, enough to swing a few elections. But Latino immigrants historically participate in elections less than other immigrant groups. Advocates are hoping to change that:

By flooding polls, advocates aim to push the immigration debate away from the enforcement-heavy approach supported by many key lawmakers in favor of comprehensive immigration reform that offers a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants and more visas to reunite families.

[Activist Ruben] Villarreal and others will concentrate on voter drives in Republican J.D. Hayworth's District 5, in parts of Mesa, Tempe and Phoenix, and Republican Jim Kolbe's District 8 in southern Arizona. Hayworth, a staunch immigration-control advocate, faces Democrat Harry Mitchell this fall, and a slew of candidates is battling for the seat Kolbe is giving up.

Not such good news for Rep. Hayworth, Randy Graf, or Don Goldwater.

AZ- 05, AZ-GOV: Arizona Republicans Take On the Media

Rep. J.D. Hayworth wants the New York Times stripped of its credentials to cover Congress from inside the Capitol because of the article it printed on anti-terrorism surveillance in banking. He’s circulating a petition asking Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) to rescind the paper’s press passes.

AZ-08, AZ-05, AZ-GOV: Arizonans Blur Party Lines

Harry Mitchell, the Democratic candidate for Arizona’s 5th District, released a list of 13 Republican elected officials, current and former, who support him over Rep. J.D. Hayworth (R) this weekend.

Not to be outdone, Hayworth publicized his own cross-party support: Craig Columbus, his 2002 general election opponent. Columbus will head up “Democrats for J.D.”
