Signing Off -- Farewell, TPMers
I can't believe I'm writing this, but for the foreseeable future this is my last post at TPM.
I'm heading over to The Washington Post, where I'll be writing the lead blog on a new site that WaPo is launching. This will drive you mad with curiosity, unfortunately, but the details on the new site and blog will only be forthcoming when it launches the week after next.
Needless to say, I'm hoping that every last one of you will come check out the new place when it's up and running. If you all want info on the new site, or just want to stay in touch, shoot me an email at sargegreg at gmail.com.
As you already know, what Josh has created here at TPM is an enormous achievement. It's hard for me to express just how much I've enjoyed and learned from my experience here. It's the best gig I've ever had -- even better than playing first base on the neighborhood little league team -- and it was an honor and a privilege to have had the chance to do whatever I've been able to help implement Josh's truly unique journalistic vision.
Josh is also a good and decent boss and enormously fun to work with. Many, many thanks, Josh, and here's hoping we'll work together again one day.
I also want to thank a few more people.
First among them: The indefatigable David Kurtz, who provided me with invaluable editing, direction and advice at no shortage of critical moments. He's funny as hell, too, which made things a lot easier at some very tricky and tense moments during the campaign.
Many thanks to Eric Kleefeld for all the terrific work he did for the site. I'll miss Eric's seemingly bottomless knowledge of political trivia and his entertaining (if relentless) tendency to play the young office Rodney Dangerfield. (You do get some respect, Eric, believe it or not.)
And thanks to Ben Craw for cutting all that great video that appeared here, to Andrew Golis for his tireless and innovative efforts to promote the site and boost its readership, and to Justin Elliott for regularly front-paging our stories with wit and alacrity. And of course, to my wife for supporting these efforts for an entire campaign.
And finally, you, readers. I'm humbled that so many of you spent so much time here for so long. For months and months and months, you kept the conversation lively, fun and smart. You made sure to let us know -- often rather vocally -- when we were wrong or being knuckle-headed. You also were responsible for helping us break some of the site's biggest stories. Simply put, this site would not have worked to whatever degree it did without you.
Okay, so that's it. Talk to you all soon.

Best wishes and thanks for your contributions here.

Best of luck Greg at your new position with WaPo.
I've enjoyed following you here at TPM throughout this recent campaign season, and you (and Josh, too!) have inspired me to begin offering whatever meager contribution I can make as a first-time blogger within these pages.
I will of course check you out on the WaPo website, and look forward to you hopefully maintaining some kind of presence here at TPM. It just won't be the same here without you, otherwise.
Again, best of luck... and CONGRATULATIONS!

Dear Josh,
A great leader cultivates great talent and gives it wings to fly off on it's own at the right time. You are clearly demonstrating that kind of leadership. For your great leadership, as demonstrated by Greg's contribution and happy departure, I am grateful.
Dear Greg,
You are a formidable talent. I have enjoyed your work and look forward to keeping your good work in front of me. Hopefully there will be an easy link from TPM when your new home is launched.
Dear TPM community,
As surely as a peaceful domestic regime change is a sign that democracy is alive and well in the United States, this kind of happy succession is a sign of a healthy business and healthy work environment. How wonderful to be part of such a community! This is a great return on my investment as a reader and news contributor. Something to celebrate so soon in 2009!

It would be impossible to adequately express the gratitude I as a reader have for you, Greg. Although I often disagreed with you during the primary, your insight (along with Josh's) was regularly the first I looked forward to reading in response to any developments in the world of politics. It will be sad to see you leave my favorite site; but maybe your insights will actually give me a reason to value reading anything from the Post! Very best of luck...

Greg,
I created a new account just to post this, although I am daily TMP visitor from the very beginning. I agree with everyone else, your work and contributions have been invaluable to the visitors of TMP. I believe that.
However, I think one of the important concepts Josh and other bloggers at TMP, and across the net, have tried to reinforce is the essence of what traditional media calls "journalism" is really a sad, pathetic joke.
So, we are left with 2 choices. Either you are going to be part of traditional media's sad, pathetic joke they call "journalism". Or, this new site will be staffed and controlled by quality people like yourself - which means you will have a starting role in a well funded competitor to TMP.
No offense, but I am not particularly fond of either of those choices. However, here's to hoping I am misguided in my interpretation - so a "Good luck" to you sir.
January 2, 2009 4:26 PM | Reply | Permalink
Greg,
I can't tell you how happy I am that the "establishment" organizations have realized the importance of hiring actual journalist bloggers to write blogs, instead of folks who think that blogging is easy so, of course, ANY journalist can successfully blog (witness the blogging disasters of Chris Cilizza, Joe, klein, etc.).
I hope that this will present on opportunity to explain to other journalists how the differences and similarities of blogging and journalism, and what a journalist/blogger is and does. Explaining this has been a particularly steep learning curve, and watching mainstream media's attempt to throw journalists into blogging has been as painful as watching the auditions for American Idol. Oy.
Glad you will be there to offer the opportunity to educate those who want to learn, since you learned from the best (meaning both Josh, and his community).
Though I have disagreed with your writing on a number of occasions, I have always thought that your views were well thought out, organized, researched, and intelligently presented.
Thank you for you work, and good luck in your future. I look forward to reading you in the pages of a newly refreshed WaPo.
Many thanks to your wife for her support. You are correct that it's as much her success as yours. Get her something nice. Really nice.
Again, good luck to you both, Greg.

May you continue to do a great job of reporting and of reporting the truth regardless of whose ox may be gored!
My hope is that you not only do well in your new job, but that you are now and will remain permanently inoculated against the corporate media mediocrity! I pray the reverse may be true that you will infect them with an antidote to their toadying for the rich and powerful and how they shut out any news that doesn't fit their predetermined notions of how the story should go. Maybe they'll decide to become a news operation again, but that may be too much to ask for.
I hope that you will never start allowing the fact that you make more money, etc... to cause you to lose sight of what the common, average person's life is like (cause it's nothing like what the typical WAPO employee experiences). Stay real. Do not allow yourself to become absorbed by the corporate Borg!
Best wishes!

Congrats on the new gig! I agree with several of the other posters - WaPo is lucky to have you, and I look forward to reading your new blog. Here's hoping that hiring you is a sign of things to come at the WaPo site!

Greg;
You come from a long and growing conga-line of serious journailists who have graduated from TPM Academy and danced their way into that shadowy world we call the MSM, hopefully to right the wrongs of print and broadcast journalism that have magnified so agregiously over the past 8 years.
Good luck, and never forget where you came from.
The Blogs may seem to some a crazed, chaotic compendium, but when we look back a hundred years from now, we will recognize that they are the womb from whence our fresh crop of reporters and writers was birthed.
See you at the WaPo, and say "Hey" to Cillizza and his crew for me. I used to blog at The FIx a lot, but graduated to TPM after the 2006 elections.
