Reid And Durbin: No Seating Of Burris Yet -- But We Really Like Him

At their press conference just now, Harry Reid and Dick Durbin announced that there is no action being taken on Roland Burris' appointment to the Senate -- at least not yet.

"There's going to come a time when the entire Senate is going to have to act on this," Reid said. "And that day I hope would come sooner rather than later."

Reid and Durbin both went to great lengths to say how much they like and respect Burris, and how constructive the meeting they just had with him was. But for now, they're waiting on two things: A ruling from the state Supreme Court on whether the missing signature of Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White is required for the appointment to be valid, and for Burris' testimony tomorrow before the Illinois House impeachment committee.

The two of them also tried to defuse one touchy issue that's been in the press, saying Burris told them he understood fully well that the controversy surrounding his appointment had nothing to do with race.

The selection of Roland Burris was clearly tainted. When all of Illinois was running from Blago, Burris was running to Blago. Whatever we think about the process, the fact is Burris should be seated. The more this Blago-Burris circus continues the media will continue to drag Obama's name into it.

user-pic

Looking at the what my understanding of the laws (big qualifier here) on this, you are right: Burris ought to be seated and, seriously, there shouldn't be any restriction on him running again. I mean, how can you restrain someone like that? It's like saying that you can speak your mind today but not tomorrow if you speak it today.

But no one has to say that this situation is a good one. Blago's going out with a grin, the as-hol-.

(sorry, but this situation really grinds my gears)

user-pic

As the Daily Show pointed out last night, Burris would be, sad to say, far from our most embarrassing Senator. It's fast becoming apparent that politically, as well as legally and morally, the best course is to get it over with and seat him.

In the end Burris's argument wrt his appointment is unassailable: He personally hasn't been credibly charged with corruption; Blago's appt is, however annoying, legally binding; and Illinois deserves two Senators. (Burris has been smart in disavowing racial arguments and keeping his focus on the legal and fairness issues).

It'd be nice if Burris pledged not to run in 2010; barring that, IL Dems need to make sure someone better (and more electable) wins the nomination. Meantime, keeping him out is a losing course in every dimension -- legal, moral, and political. Get it over with already.

user-pic

I agree. The sooner this is done, the sooner we can get on with the first 100 days.

user-pic

But in the meantime, it's fun to watch the Senate Majority "Leader" squirm like an itchy bear cub. What an embarrassing, impotent excuse for a human being.

user-pic

As GTFOOH says below...

Well heck, I think just saying "Hey Reid, GTFOOH!" is a good start.

user-pic

This whole situation points out the lack of intelligence and preparation the Democratic leadership has in the Senate today.

Had they evaluated the legalities correctly, they would never have stated that they would not seat Burris.

They would have concluded that Burris was appointed legally and that they have no valid reason to refuse to seat him.

As for the Illinois Secretary of State refusing to endorse Burris' credentials: What legal basis is there for that decision? None.

The Democratic leadership has only embarassed themselves over this. They are trying to blame their embarassment on Burris or Blago, but they are the ones who do not have the legal backing in this case.

Hopefully, this is not an example of the "change" concerning the "Rule of Law" the USA experienced for the last 8 years.

Bingo, Johann! Reid and his colleagues have demonstrated once again their utter inability to assess issues with the insight and shrewdness that the Republicans can. The result is inevitably going to be retreat, embarrassment, and encouragement of Republican brinksmanship. The Rethugs must be positively giggling at the squirming buffoonery they can look forward to. As it stands now, the Democratic majority may be the best shot the Rethugs have at recovering the Senate in 2010 or 2012.

Isn't there ANY Democrat out there that knows how to exercise power? Chuck ... Shelly? Can't someone step in and rescue the Democrats in the Senate from themselves?

user-pic
saying Burris told them he understood fully well that the controversy surrounding his appointment had nothing to do with race.

Of course it didn't. Of course it had nothing to do with race. Of course not. Of course Blago isn't giggling his soon to be out of office ass off about all of this. Of course not. Nope, race had nothing to do with this surreal situation.

user-pic

I hope they don't trust him if he agrees not to run again in 2010 as part of any dealmaking...

user-pic

What's the big deal if does run in 2010? there's no guarantee that he'll win. Why don't people let the process play its self out?

user-pic

Jonze - WOW, "believing him" is way less significant to believing that it's OK to extract such a promise, to give up his Constitional right to run for office, and the Constituional right of the Illinois people to (a) nominate him and (b) vote for, or against him if he's on the ballot.

user-pic

Yeah, I can spell "Constitutional" if I type slowly, and I also know what it means.

user-pic

The deal to be made, should be that Reid won't run again in 2010.

user-pic

Why can't we comment on the previous Panetta post? It's on EC, posted by a TPM reporter...we should be able to comment, no?

user-pic

If they'd had the sense at the beginning to realize they really had little if any legal basis to deny Burris the seat, they would not look so foolish as they do now by trying to walk it all back.

Like it or not, it's still Gov. Spellcheck's appointment to make under Illinois law.

user-pic

Reid is a disgrace. What party is he in? Eager to excuse one of the most nasty, corrupt and partisan Republicans, Ted Stevens, because "he's suffered enough", caving time after time to the Worst President Ever and now, dithering about Blago's pick, Roland Burris.
There are other ways to deal with Burris - don't give him any committee assignments. Let him warm a chair for a year until the next election when he can try to get elected to the job. Then he can chisel "Senator" on his cemetery monument and retire if Illinois voters choose someone else. I hate to say this, but If the Illinois voter elect a Republican, so be it. That's the democratic system we cherish. The disarray only helps the GOP and they could pick up more seats next year if Reid keeps this up.
Much as I can't stand Blago, he hasn't been convicted or impeached yet except in the media, so he still has the authority to appoint Obama's replacement. Blago appointed Burris to create a no-win situation for any and all opponents of his choice. Any African-American will do in Reckless Rod's calculus. Burris's preening egotism is nothing new in politics and doesn't disqualify him to be an interim Senator.
With all of the monumental problems facing the new President, this side-show is a terrible way to start.
Retire the Country Mouse.

user-pic

I don't want this clown in Congress, period (Burris, not Reid, although that is debatable too):

http://www.thepersonalispolitical.com/2009/01/mr-burris-goes-to-washington.html

user-pic

I don't have a strong opinion on this issue per se; it's complicated and difficult.

But Reid's performance after just two days of the 111th Congress make clear what a colossal disaster he is. Senate Dems should dump him ASAP and have Durbin replace him. Otherwise, Obama's agenda could get swallowed up by the black hole that is Harry Reid's brain.

user-pic

Reid really looks like a buffoon. More than usual, even.

This is how he kicks of the historic, and critically important 111th Congress.

What a joke.

user-pic

Okay...

Let's examine this closely to see just how much damage the wrong folks in DC can do.

Burris... possibly a crooked guy looking for a senate seat, but no evidence yet to support this.

Reid, Pelosi, Hatch.... 96 others.... on record of supporting human torture, illegal wars, lying to congress, spying on American citizens, and various other high crimes and treason by themselves and leaders in the Executive and Judicial branches of our government...

Scary...

user-pic

Reid sounded guilty when he implied he wasn't racist, and kept saying the S.O.S of Illinois is an AA.. I thought Reid was gonna say some of my best friends are black...........

user-pic

Let's call a spade a spade: Reid's an incompetent buffoon.

user-pic

Did you know, like Romney he is a Moron?

user-pic

Congratulations for your contribution to the high tone of this discussion.

user-pic

What a weenie

Worse than a weenie...a flapping weenie

user-pic

Reid has managed to take three different positions on seating Burris, and been wrong on all of them.

That's no mean feat.

He should have announced his enthusiastic support from the get-go, and let the Republicans try to stop Burris. Then he gets to paint them as partisans and racists, while fighting a principled, but losing, battle to seat the new Democratic Senator from Illinois.

and if the Republicans don't take the bait, then he's still got a loyal ally in the junior Senator from Illinois.

Instead, we get this incompetent, party fracturing fiasco. How the hell this man is going to lead the fight to implement the Democratic agenda over the next two years is quite beyond me.

user-pic

JeffGee - excellent comments. The other members of the Senate Democratic Caucus must surely now realize that they must appoint a new majority leader. After all, they have a kind of "new" majority, and a new President will be inaugurated on Jan. 20, with a lot of optimistic (perhaps overly so) supporters, expecting "the kind of change we need."

The Senate technicalities witch-hunt to keep Roland Burris from taking his seat, done with, or on behalf of Obama, is disgusting. I charge the MSM with failure to report completely by neglecting to mention the gross hypocrisy of the thin-Reid lead Senate Democrats, who meted out not an iota of punishment to certified political traitor Lieberman, who literally campaigned at McCain's side and doubted Obama's qualifications to be president, even letting warlover Joe retain his committee chair, as requested by Obama. And, we must remember that Reid also requested that the Illinois legislature NOT act to have a special election to fill this seat, for fear of losing it to a Repubnican. Burris has an impressive Democratic resume, happens to be an African American, and the people of Illinois deserve more than 50% representation in the Senate. There are really only two rings in this "circus": one being the Senate Dimlocrat Caucus for its lack of political and moral courage; the second being the main stream media's attempts to paint Roland Burris as a lackey and buffoon. They need only look into their mirrors to find a real ones.

user-pic

Would now be a good time to mention Reid's gutless comments on seating Al Franken?

user-pic

I'm an IL voter and I am disappointed that Roland Burris will most likely be my Senator. Burris does not impress me when I hear him speak. I also don't respect his decision to accept the position from Blago - because it's not good for IL. But - I take responsibility as a voter. I was a lazy democrat who did not do enough in the dem Gov primary in 06. We knew Blago was an idiot then and we still re-elected him. IL democrats need to get active and help get some better options out there. We need to do that in the 2010 Senate primary so we have a decent democratic option for the senate. I plan on being involved in the special congressional election in the 5th distract where I live.

user-pic

I didn't know Roland Burris from Adam but I just saw his press conference and I think he's pretty sharp

user-pic

It's tough to make the right decision, hey Harry? How many is that today? Or is he just not fit for your club, Harry? Maybe you should consult Diane or Jay. They command less forthrightness than you.

user-pic

I like Harry Reid--I think he does the best he can in difficult, shifting situations. Apparently the Democratic senators think so too. They re-elected him Majority Leader unanimously this last Nov. 18. Before that he was their whip from 1999. Obviously there are things going on behind the scenes that the public might not know about, but the senators do and they appreciate his leadership.

It's easy to bash senators like Reid and Feinstein but they've toughed it out for Democratic party and our country through the worst of times. Now we have what probably will be the best of times for Democrats, and who knows how long that will last. The inauguration is coming up, we'll have 59 senators and a big majority in the House. Let's hold together and not be like a dysfunctional family trading blows at a wedding.

user-pic

"It's easy to bash senators like Reid and Feinstein but they've toughed it out for Democratic party and our country through the worst of times."

If by "toughing it out" you mean support and even enable all of the destructive, boneheaded, and outright criminal actions of the worst president in American history, then I agree with you.

user-pic

Amen.

user-pic

Jward - pretty words but can you identify any specific instance where Reid held the Rethuglicans' feet to the fire? Did he ever actually force them to back up their threat of a filibuster?

I will grant you that his position must be based on behind-the-scenes activities because nothing I've seen in public warrants it. Personally, I'm thinking he owes his position to a combination of perks and Polaroids.

user-pic

Why should Reid bother saying he likes him or not. Their legal obligations don't change based on their BFF status.

user-pic

Before the new term has begun, the Democratic senate leadership has come off looking like out of touch, lead footed , tone deaf nitwits. Not exactly what we need in these toubled times.
I have lost confidence in Harry Reid, whose uninspiring leadership during the Bush years aggravated me, and now this Goofy public spectacle over Burris.

We need a more agile, in touch Senate leader. Reid does not inspire confidence in me, ever has, but I thought he was saavy. now we need saavy plus straightforward. what is this business about calling bluff's etc?
Ms. Feinstein, I own a business and I am sleeping on a cot in my business because I cannot afford to rent a home or an apartment. GET IT? Political posturing doesn't exactly impress me.

With all due respect, Senator Feinstein ,hasn't exactly started things off very well either.

I voted for President elect Obama. I want the US Senate to be
as full of heart as it can be to make some real changes here.
not just handouts. real change.
I am sick to death of the posturing. I want to see an end to the BS, I hope the Senate will get to Work, and I'm not exactly impressed with what I see so far.

user-pic

I find this Burris business depressing. To begin, I think Burris was dishonorable to a) accept the appointment from a governor suspected of trying to sell that same senate seat; and b) by having his supporters play the race card. Now, lacking honor will hardly put Burris in the minority in the U.S. Senate but that, too, is depressing.

Harry Reid is a horrible majority leader. All he does is capitulate because, as he says, as an old trial lawyer he knows there is "always" room to negotiate. I'll put aside for a moment that when Reid says "negotiate," he really means "capitulate" (which he amply demonstrated throughout the Bush years). But I'll tell you: the trial lawyers I know don't roll over backwards every time somebody looks at them crossly. No wonder Reid had to find a new line of work.

All that said, it's probably least bad at this point to seat Burris. Very demoralizing beginning to Democratic control of the Fed government. As if Obama doesn't already have enough to deal with. Yuck.

user-pic

Burris will become a senator in no small measure because of the pic which ran on the front page of today's NYT and WSJ:

http://www.nytimes.com/indexes/2009/01/07/pageone/scan/index.html

It's the perfect image of the race card he and his supporters have been playing, making it look as if a black man is being bullied by a belligerent crowd.

Dems can't afford another day of front-page pics like this one. So the moral midget from Illinois will get a seat he richly does not deserve.

And by the way, if anybody thinks a guy who built a monument to himself will not run for the seat as an incumbent in 2010... I've got a half-built bridge in Alaska you might be interested in buying.

user-pic

As usual, the Democrats have staked out a very firm position on Burris. Now, as usual, they are preparing to abandon it.

user-pic

His appointment is tainted and Burris is an idiot to act like it's not, but seat the man. Get on with the country's work and let Illinois voters decide whether to elect him next year.
