House and Senate Compete To See Who Can be Most Pro-Israel

The Senate has just passed, by voice vote, a resolution defending and praising Israel for its war in Gaza, an operation that yesterday won condemnation from the Red Cross.

The House is expected to follow suit with its own conspicuously pro-Israel resolution by week's end, with only a few lawmakers -- Ron Paul and Dennis Kucinich are two leaders on this issue -- expected to resist the tide.

We're looking into whether any senator was bold enough to decline to co-sponsor the measure, which somewhat dubiously asserts that Israel "facilitated humanitarian aid" in Gaza. But in the meantime, a couple of things jumped out when comparing the House and Senate drafts.

  • The House's resolution "calls on Egypt to intensify its efforts to halt smuggling between Gaza and Egypt and affirms the willingness of the United States to continue to assist Egypt in these efforts" -- the sort of seemingly boilerplate language that risks arousing the ire of the Egyptian government -- but the Senate has no such clause.
  • The House's resolution also calls for "the immediate release of the kidnapped Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, who has been illegally held in Gaza". No such clause appears in the Senate version.

We'll update with more interesting differences, and let you know who declined to co-sponsor the measures.

Why must they DO anything -- just let the fighting continue without having any resolution or demand that they stop.

Why BRAG about LIKING the Fighting?

user-pic

Nothing wrong with having a statement or resolution---just don't have it be so one-sided. Obviously, our gov't should have something to say about the fighting---our 3 billion per year in military hardware to Israel make it possible. There is nothing wrong with demanding the return of Shalit, but the statement needs to be more even handed.

Reading this you would get the impression that US isn't an exactly an honest broker. Imagine that.

user-pic

Votes. The whole reason there is an Israel in the first place.

Juan Cole declared the Death of NeoConservatism in Gaza today

http://www.juancole.com/2009/01/cole-in-salon-gaza-and-end-of.html
Looks like he was a bit premature. As Pat Buchanan says, Congress is an Israeli-Occupied Territory

And such Burris like timing! Just as the UN pulls out of Gaza because of Israeli attacks

user-pic

I thought the NeoCons got wiped out in November...what happened?

user-pic

Well, America has no pressing problems, so Congress should spend its time on useless nonsense to please J-street.

user-pic

Please J-Street?

Don't think so

user-pic

john, i think the commenter above you wasn't talking about JStreet, but instead was attempting cleverness by conflating the lobbyists of K Street with Jews. Wilde and Twain wrapped up in one package, huh?

did i mention http://jstreet.org/?

user-pic

Yea...doesn't make sense save as a play on letters

user-pic

Idiots really shouldn't even attempt cleverness. Just stick with the stupid.

The US will always confirm and reaffirm Israel's proprietary right to violence. Israel uses US weapons and supploes in order to maintain apartheid. This is the sole means of Israeli existence as a religious state surrounded by hostile religious states.

Israel, however, has been boxed in by a guerilla defense structure utilizes tunnels and civilian areas to keep a mobile and antagonistic fence around Israel. Now, Israel can only use air power against other nations. Over time, Israel will likely be forced to negotiate for its very existence because they will be choked off from all sides.

Now is the time for negotiated peace. The US is doing Israel no favors by giving them more hanging rope.

user-pic

Senate to Palestinians: DROP DEAD!

user-pic

Just the Hamas ones...

user-pic

That is impossible to determine when using high yield explosives in the most densely populated strip of land on Earth.

user-pic

and must give props to jon stewart for ridiculing the one-sided media on this. he did a segment on it, then pressed david gregory on it, as well. on monday's show, IIRC.

user-pic

O/T. What does IIRC stand for?

Please relieve my internet cluelessness....

user-pic

If I Recall Correctly :)

user-pic

Thanks Buddha!

(It is Buddha, right?)

user-pic

You are welcome! (Buddha it is)

"The Israelis ... are responding exactly the same way we would."

check out 'Sagamore' Mitch McConnell inadvertently hitting one right out of the park (that was his quote in the reuters article).

unfortunately, that IS exactly the kind of sick country we have now--and apparently the kind of mindset that still pervades both houses. when in doubt, invade, blow stuff up, spin the media, and cry patriotism!

disgusting... where ma change at!

user-pic

That doesn't mean they would write a resolution SAYING they did.

It's NOT necessary to take time away from other PRESSING economic and our own military actions to waste time on making a STATEMENT.

You want to make a statement --- send a letter to the editor

user-pic

I am ashamed that our legislators are encouraging the loss of innocent lives.

user-pic

Encouraging the Israeli equivalents of Cheney and Rumsfeld as they engage in the Israeli equivalent of our Iraq fiasco is hardly my idea of being "pro-Israel". Quite the contrary.

user-pic

Utterly craven and shameful. When will I ever stop being astonished by the depths of the depravity of our government? I feel absolutely sicked right now.

user-pic

This is what they are doing with our tax dollars?

user-pic

These 'statements of support' just go to show what whores those that supposedly represent us and our nation's best interests are.
It -apparently- doesn't enter their mindset that Israel's actions only whet the appetite for the killing of U.S. citizens and the increasing ability of those who would visit terrorism from abroad on the U.S. to recruit others for their purposes.
"Money talks and the congress critters slime their way across the government"; can't get in the way of the weapons and munitions manufacturers who employ on so many people here in the U.S.
There is so much blood on the hands of U.S. citizen's it will never come off until the U.S. is no more.

user-pic

Not that it makes a difference, but I really think it is a wrongheaded response to "Islamic terrorism", rather than a bald faced attempt to protect some US weapons manufacturers.

user-pic

Rather than being quiet and not jumping into the fracas, Congress seems to demand that once again America isolate itself politically from the rest of the world.

America truly has lost it's moral voice.

user-pic

That's no revelation.

user-pic

what a disgrace the government of this country is.

and you expect them to do anything about bush and cheeny when they praise the same war crimes of israel.

obama has shown too, he is a trojan horse.

wake up people.

user-pic

At least let the guy be inaugurated before calling him a Trojan Horse, for goodness sakes.

user-pic

We need to write to our Congressmen. They need to know that the vast majority of Americans are sick of knee-jerk support for the government of Israel. It's just absurd that this is practically the first action by the Senate.

user-pic

This is one that is well worth calling your senators for (to ask how they voted - I'll bet they won't tell you since it was a voice vote - the phone answerer at my senators office even denied that such a vote had taken place).

And even more important to call your house member to tell them how much you care about this. Not that it will make much difference, but you can bet the house members will be deluged with calls from Aipac-bots.

Oh and by the way, this was apparently written by Aipac, since they are the only place that seems to have the text of the resolution (this is prominent on aipac's home page).

Harry Reid is of course the cosponsor. Proving once again what a worthless piece of shXt Reid is.

I know Aipac has written legislation in the past - maybe they could be embarassed with this if it could be proven?

user-pic
I know Aipac has written legislation in the past - maybe they could be embarassed with this if it could be proven?
Of course not. They would be highly indignant if there were ever any legislation concerning Israel that they DIDN'T write. But that, of course, will never happen.

How disgusting it is that political discourse in Israel itself is so much more free and contentious than here.

user-pic

It's the power of the charge of "antisemitic" (or "self-hating jew" if you happen to be jewish) that is used to scare everybody in this country. Its probably only a matter of time before some of TPM's neocon commenters come on here to start calling all of US "antisemites".

user-pic

Well, I'll reply to them in advance: Bite me.

user-pic

"TPM NeoCon commenters"

I didn't know there was such a thing!

user-pic

Unfortunately, there certainly are resident neocons. My personal favorite is "SholomA", who quoted the National Review (!!) and argued that it was stating the absolute unvarnished "truth".

And then there's "YBD", who seems to like to create new names for himself (like "Len" and "maven81") so he can congratulate himself for his brilliant and insightful posts.

If you're curious here's a post by MJ Rosenberg where I waste my time getting into a discussion with these jokers. The scarey thing is that they feel absolutely no shame or human feelings of any kind for the children that are being penned up and murdered in Gaza (http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/2009/01/06/andrew_sullivan_former_peretz_disciple_says_gaza_i/)

user-pic
user-pic

Hey, I know! Let's align ourselves with the side killing innocent children. Because it worked so well in Iraq, no?

I'm ashamed of my country. Republican or Democrat, same side of a dirty coin.

user-pic

Congressional passes bold bi-partisan resolution:

"We will gladly drop to our knees and perform fallatio on Israel whenever they ask for it."

user-pic

Ah, yes, Ms. Schor. The boldness of moral equivalency.

user-pic

The number of voters who will be angry with what the House and Senate did will equal the number who have posted on this and other leftish blogs. The number of voters who will not vote for a liberal Democrat because of what the Congress did, who would have otherwise voted for that Democrat, is less than half of the number of angry leftish blog posters. Each of those numbers is infinitely less than the total number of voters, AND EVERY SINGLE MEMBER OF CONGRESS KNOWS THAT.

user-pic

Great. Yes, it's really quite the grand massacre. How nice of our Congress to tell the world we really dig killing kids and old folks with US weaponry.

My sympathies for Israel went up with the acrid smoke of burning schools, homes, mosques and hospitals.

user-pic

Israel has attacked and killed United States sailors on the U.S.S. Liberty. I have never forgiven them for this. But this is just one manifestation of how they chose to behave. Israel behaves in the most uncivilized fashion in the Middle East and they receive unquestioned support from our Congressional leaders. Well screw our Congress too.

At sixty years old I want to ask just two questions about this matter.

1. Does the state of Israel look at the United States as their second state or does the United States look at Israel as our 51st state?

2. Are we Israels' "bitch" or are they our "bitch".

user-pic

Absolutely right on, Viper 123 !

user-pic

I wonder how much that vote cost AIPAC members.

We gave Germany it's country back and the Marshall Plan following WWII, so that there would be no WWIII. But then, those Germans were white--Nazis, but white. Those brown people in Palestine, on the other hand, needed to be punished for siding with the Germans. I wonder how much blood of those little Palestinian infants and toddlers it will take to satisfy the appetites of today' Congress?

Come on, people, stop worrying your heads about those brown people in the Middle East. After all, what can they do to us?

user-pic

Why do I continue to be surprised by the human incapacity for shame? I should know better by now.

user-pic

...Seriously, I'm sick of the infallibility of the United States' pro-Israel stance. It's to the point of extremism, and it grates on pragmatism and rationality. As long as the United States continues its staunch position like this, no progress will take place between Israel and Palestine with US involvement.

user-pic

Yes, and you should be sick of it. We can only hope with the rest of the world that Obama will make a real change. I'm skeptical, but I haven't lost all hope of this.

In the meantime, you need to call you US House rep. Their phone number is here: http://clerk.house.gov/member_info/mcapdir.html The House hasn't voted yet, and because congressional districts are relatively small, they actually do care (a small amount) about what callers say.

user-pic

I would vote for somebody, ANYBODY, almost regardless of anything else who would say, "Our foreign policy will no longer be dictated to us from Israel and South Florida". Ever hear that two wrongs don't make a right? Well Israel DOES have the right to defend itself. Israel should NOT however, have the right to prevent people, (including and especially children), from fleeing and then slaughtering them. Half a dozen civilians killed in a year don't justify hundreds of children being killed and maimed by indiscriminate warfare. The kids didn't "choose" to live there, even if the parents in some cases did. I would also think, that no matter how stupid and conservative a person is, he or she would eventually realize that after 60 years of the same policies yeilding the same results, that it's time to change policy. In a few weeks or months time when this latest round of wholesale destruction ends, the newest class of martyrs will have graduated and the newest class of terrorists will have started school.

user-pic

Now you know why the US mainstream media worked so hard to turn Kucinich and Ron Paul into toothless joke-figures. Neither was treated as a serious candidate for fear that the voting public might actually listen to what they were saying.

user-pic

This is STUPID of the congress. They are totaly wrong on this.

user-pic

Well the neocons are pro Israel for their own reasons but I suspect that a lot of the Dems are afraid of being accused of being anti semitic if they don't cheer loudly enough for Israel. 1) Anti Israel doesn't equal anti Jewish and 2) NOT cheering for them doesn't equal anti Israel. Where the hell are the Progressives on this?

user-pic

Fear of the charge of antisemitism is only part of it. Aipac starts by spreading around money - lots of it (they do this by promoting contributions to their chosen candidates). They save the charge of antisemitism only when they find a candidate that they can't buy. Unfortunately there aren't many of those candidates. They are BY FAR the largest lobby for a foreign government working on capital hill, and their power there is unsurpassed.

user-pic

Apparently the only true qualification for a member of Congress is to affirm, "I pledge allegiance to Israel."

AIPAC is getting their money's worth.

And we wonder why the US has no moral standing as a fair arbiter in world events.

user-pic

Just say no to Israel. Israel creates more future terrorists for the US to fight. We need a divorce.

user-pic

I still say if people feel there needs to be a "Jewish state", we should give them New York. It wasn't Palestinians who spent 2000 years burning Jews alive, it was us. If this lovely project ends well, it will be the only imperialist gambit of the 20th century to do so.

user-pic

"I still say if people feel there needs to be a "Jewish state", we should give them New York."

Please, please keep up the hate-spewing bigotry here. My friends and I just love it when Israel-haters look so much like bigoted idiots that no Congressman wants to be seen with them. It's so much easier to persuade Members of Congress that Israel is right.

You want to know when we worry. We worry when people start by acknowledging Israel's terrible, awful dilemma in dealing with Hamas, and add that if Detroit or El Paso had ever been rocketed repeatedly like Sderot by thugs across the border, the U.S. response would have been just as brutal if not more so, and then say they disagree in specific ways with the particular tactics of the Israeli Government. That kind of discourse makes things much tougher for us. Fortunately, few here or in blogoland will adopt it.

user-pic

The only strategy used by the Israelis is: you stepped on my foot, now I'm going to kill everyone in your village and then burn your entire village to the ground.
Thugs. War Criminals. Full Stop.

user-pic

What a disgusting bunch of hypocrites. There will not be peace until we support peace.

user-pic

I cannot help but think that when the US Government does something like this that the world has a hard time not viewing us as a big, bullying goon defiantly daring the world to "do something about it" not unlike how in the bad old days the USSR would defend the actions of one of it's client states regardless of whether there was any correlation between the truth and the position they were taking on it.

I would like to see a permanent, lasting and real peace where Israel and it's neighbors not only coexist but become good neighbors. I just don't see how killing gets us there. Killing Israelis doesn't get us there. Killing Palestinians doesn't get us there. As Gandhiji said: "an eye for an eye ends up making the whole world blind."

user-pic

This is just another indication of why we need public funding of federal elections. The Jewish lobby gets on the phone and say jump. Of course Congress will simply say how high. Meanwhile the insanity coming from both sides becomes entrenched. 8 years of diplomatic neglect is a contributing factor as well.

user-pic

AIPAC über alles ! Has AIPAC caught the entire senate of the United States on videotape in America's airport bathrooms ?
