Is Harry Reid Really Trying to Push Tom Coburn Off the Judiciary Committee?
Any progressives who have felt bile rise in their throats during previous public struggles of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) will likely get a kick out of this post on the conservative blog Red State, in which Eric Erickson proves quasi-eloquently that the right has as many problems with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) as the left has with Reid.
But No. 4 on Erickson's list of complaints about McConnell is the most interesting: is the Republican leader really "not fighting Reid on throwing [Sen. Tom] Coburn off the Judicial [sic] Committee"?
There would be ample cause for Reid to try to punish Coburn, the Oklahoma Republican who makes a habit of gumming up the Senate works to slow down what he deems excessive government spending. Coburn's quests to delay routine bills -- last year the number topped 100 -- tend to be lonely, but his efforts on the Judiciary Committee have made him a conservative darling.
So it would be a major story if, as The Hill reported last week, Reid tried to cut the number of seats on the judiciary panel in an effort to knock off Coburn. But that's not the case.
As this Congressional Research Service report documents, precedent shows that Democrats' likely 59-seat majority (once the Minnesota and Illinois seats are resolved) entitles them at least a two-seat advantage on most Senate committees. Since no one above Coburn on the judiciary committee lost a race or retired last year, he's out of luck -- unless he can convince a more senior member to give up their seat on the plum panel.
Looks like Sen. John Cornyn might have to lead the way in that hunt for any possible ties between Eric Holder and Rod Blagojevich.
I took a look at other Senate committees and found that retirements or losses would likely be enough to keep other young conservatives from losing their committee seats. Coburn's health committee seat looks safe, thanks to the departure of former Sen. Wayne Allard (R-CO) this year, but a lot depends on how Reid and McConnell settle on committee ratios this year.

If I were Tom Coburn and Harry Reid made any sort of public statement that he wanted me off that committee, I'd be feeling pretty good about my seat being safe. There isn't a line in the sand that Harry's ever drawn that everyone hasn't crossed.

That's the thing. I doubt Reid said anything other than that a 59-41 spread simply means somebody has to come off the committee, probably the guy with the least seniority.

I want to disagree with you. I really do. I want to appreciate what a good Majority Leader Reid really is. Because then I would be able to maintain the illusion that the Democrats really haven't been as useless as they appear to have been for the last 8 years--along the lines of, if Harry's doing good stuff, then maybe there's a reason Dems keep him in as Majority Leader.
But I find I'm not able to.

So now Harry Reid gets credit for the 5 years of democratic lameness before he even became MINORITY leader in 2005?

Fair point. What's he done since 2005 that you think highly of?
I like the keeping the Senate in recess so recess appointments can't be made. I also like his maneuver over the weekend to hold a vote for cloture over the environmental bill.
Two things in four years is good, I guess.

I like that Elana threw that [sic] in when she quoted Erickson. I mean, sure, it was the grammatically correct thing to do but there are few more satisfying things than being able to use [sic] when quoting someone you strongly disagree with. I like Elana already.

I gotta say, that Mitch's fighting to keep earmarks front and center pisses me off too!

I don't have anything substantive to add...but I have to say that the headline made me smile.
