Election Central Morning Roundup

Today: Possible Ruling From Minnesota Supreme Court
The Minnesota Supreme Court could possibly hand down a key ruling today in the Senate recount, relating to a lawsuit by Norm Coleman that alleges the double-counting of a small but potentially consequential number of absentee ballots. The Coleman campaign's requested remedy is to go back to the Election Night totals in 25 targeted precincts -- which would also undo any recount gains that Al Franken made in these areas, putting Coleman back in the lead.

Obama Attends Memorial For Late Grandmother
Barack Obama attended a memorial service yesterday for his late grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, who died the day before he was elected to the presidency. The Obama family and their friends scattered Dunham's ashes at an ocean overlook called the Lanai Lookout, the same spot where Obama scattered his mother's ashes.

Poll: Sky-High Ratings For Obama Transition, Cabinet Appointments
A new CNN poll has Barack Obama's at an 82% approval rating for how he's handled his transition, with 80% approving of his cabinet choices. Only 11% rated the cabinet picks as below average or poor, with 32% saying they are average, 38% saying they are above average, and 18% saying they're outstanding.

More New York Dems Coming Out Against Caroline Kennedy
The New York Times reports that more New York Democrats are voicing their opposition to appointing Caroline Kennedy to the Senate, due to factors ranging from an overly-aggressive publicity campaign to her refusal to commit to supporting the Democratic nominee against Mike Bloomberg next year. "If I were the governor, I would look and question whether this is the appointment I would want to make, whether her first obligation might be to the mayor of the City of New York rather than the governor who would be appointing her," said state Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver.

Denver Mayor: I Want Salazar's Senate Seat
John Hickenlooper, the mayor of Denver and a former businessman, has now confirmed that he is interested in the appointment to Ken Salazar's Senate seat and has spoken to Dem Gov. Bill Ritter about the opening. Polling has suggested that Hickenlooper would run well statewide, but Ritter also has a lot of other choices in a state that has swung strongly to the Democrats.

Corzine Calls For $1 Trillion Stimulus Over Two Years
New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine (D) has a new op-ed piece in the Washington Post, advocating an aggressive stimulus package totaling $1 trillion over two years. "This is a large sum," Corzine writes, "but if the spending is executed effectively, it should be a significant investment in our country's physical and human resources that will pay long-term dividends while also creating and saving jobs."

Obamas And Bidens To Appear At Ten Officials Inaugural Balls
Barack Obama, Joe Biden and their wives are now set to appear at a total of ten official balls to celebrate the inauguration, though it will just be to briefly stop by and wave to the crowds of well-wishers. This is less than Bill Clinton's 14 balls in 1997, greater than George W. Bush's eight from 2001, and equal to the number Ronald Reagan attended in 1985.

Poll: Blago The "Naughtiest" Politician This Year
A new pre-Christmas CNN poll asked respondents which politician has been the "naughtiest" this year, from among three choices and with their offenses listed. The winner, and by a landslide: Rod Blagojevich at 56%, followed by Eliot Spitzer with 23%, and John Edwards at 19%.

Hot Rod might be the naughtiest pol but Spitzer and Edwards were naughtier husbands!

I think Josh is right Kwami Kilpatric is a lock. His ability to extend his lies and fraud into nearly every area of his existence is if nothing else a sure sign of diligence!

"scatted" grandma's ashes? like ella fitzgerald? strange rituals, these hawai'ians.

"i commend you to the lord, skeedly poi poi doobedy bop ah-wheee!"

Obama has sky high approval ratings right now according to CNN where >80% of Americans approve of Obama because the vast MAJORITY of Americans REALLY WANT AND NEED Obama to succeed as president.

user-pic

Bill did have a lot of balls.

user-pic

Well, we now know how effective Hannity and his ilk were with their attempts to knock Obama down a peg through his connections to Blago. Here's hoping they keep puffing away on this topic while Obama focuses on implementing real solutions.

Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to take this opportunity to wish you and yours a very festive, very warm holiday season.

We have seen a lot this year, and there have been a lot of faces here--in the form of humorous avatars, of course--that have made the election season informative and enjoyable. I want to give you thanks and note my deep and abiding appreciation for the people here and the thoughts discussed.

Too, go thanks and warm wishes to the staff of TPM and its publisher, Josh Marshall. I have consistently relied on TPM to provide good reporting, excellent commentary, and fascinating discussions. Ranging from the attorney-firings scandal to the excellent coverage of Alaskan politics to the Cafe discussion with Nobel Prize Winning Economist Paul Krugman and equally respected columnists and everything in between, I know I am not alone in saying that TPM is the first page to pop up when I fire up the browser. And thus may it ever be.

Best wishes to all in the new year. May this site continue to prosper as our political landscape changes (and let us pray for the better), and may your personal prosperity grow in the coming age.

user-pic

Best wishes to you, as well, Lars.

I always enjoy your comments.

And your DailyKos diary about the Warren invitation was excellent.

Peace.

user-pic

Back at you, Lars!

The more politicians carp about Caroline Kennedy, the more my support for her grows.

That said, she needs to answer questions about her finances.

user-pic

I'm beginning to hope Paterson does not appoint her so she can run in 2010 and beat all of those smug, jealous pols in the primary then win the Senate seat. It would probably be best for her and her career in the long run if she's not appointed.

What's this about Dems resenting her connection to Bloomberg? If Dems were so opposed to Bloomberg, he wouldn't wipe the floor with them in every election. I guess you're supposed to pretend you're supporting the Democrat then vote for Bloomberg in the privacy of the voting booth.

user-pic

Regular NYers are griping about Caroline Kennedy too. 41% of us think she is not qualified to be Senator. And I'm hoping Paterson doesn't bow to out-of-state pressure to appoint someone so utterly undeserving to the post.

user-pic

41% think she's not qualified and 40% think she is qualified and 19% have no opinion. Yeah, that's real clear, isn't it?

And quit with the "out of state" pressure crap. If you you really think who runs, etc is decided by the people of the state, you don't have a clue.

In 2004 and 2008, NY Senator Chuck Schumer picked the majority of the senate primary candidates in every state. He also had a huge hand in how they ran their general election campaigns. Given how much money the national party raised and spent for these candidates, they had every right to do so. That's what happens in parties.

In 2010, only NY'ers will have a vote but the person who gets to the starting line will be decided by folks who represent states far, far away.

user-pic

Yes, its very clear. No one without the name Kennedy would be considered with Caroline Kennedy's "qualifications." Who the hell wold appoint someone with those poll numbers in terms of being qualified? She's in Sarah Palin-land poll numbers. There are better options. She is not the only candidate. I'm glad to see Cuomo and even better Nadler come out publicly and stop this nonsense that it's Caroline's seat of she wants it. If you polled in Nadler is qualified to be Senator, you'd get at least in the high 80s because he's spent his entire life in politics, fighting for liberal and democratic causes.

And no, national democrats do not get to choose who the democratic senator from NY will be. Mind your own business or go look after the Illinois seat. We can handle our own state politics just fine.

user-pic

But Chuck Schumer gets to pick Democratic Senators from every other state, huh?

Perhaps you should take a civics lesson, genius. The Senator from NY is the business of every person in the US since, last time I checked, he/she votes on NATIONAL issues. You do know what "national" means, don't you? I'll help you out here since you seem to be struggling. That means "of or pertaining to the nation."

Given your dismal track record for picking winners, I'm thrilled that you are so vehemently opposed to CK. I mean, Obama never would have won the primary had it not been for you steadfast support of Hillary!

user-pic

Civics 101. The Senators are chosen by the people of the state. They represent the entire state instead of local congressional districts. It is not the business of the people of NJ or any other state who is the Senator of NY otherwise all Senate races would be determined by say a national vote rather than restricted to residents of the state. As such, people, politicians and uncles from the great state of MA should stay the f$% out of who will be appointed the Senator from NY.

Chuck Schumer was the head of the DSCC and so was responsible for finding viable candidates to RUN for Senate seats across the nation, in coordination with the state parties. This is not a Senate race. It's looking to be appointed to a seat and the only one who makes that decision is Governor Paterson. It's far more similar to say, Obama's search for his VP. Imagine if Hillary went on a tour to be chosen as VP the way Caroline did. Imagine if Hillary refused to disclose any financial records. And then explain to me why you are not a hypocrite, changing your values because the last name is Kennedy instead of Clinton.

And you are the one stuck in the primary battles. I just don't think socialites should be awarded a Senate seat because they are named Kennedy.

user-pic

My, my, my. Does someone have a fur ball? How else would you explain such peevishness? Seems like you're afraid CK will be the senator from NY.

You're wasting your time ranting here since I doubt Paterson reads this blog . . . or gives a turkey's tit what you want. However, I have no doubt that he listens to great uncles from MA, and newly-elected presidents with 80% approval ratings. Wonder who they'd like to see get the seat?? Such a mystery.

I like the new avatar!

(but then, I would, wouldn't I?)

user-pic

Another addition to the TPM cat-vatar community! Smokey Claws & I wish you and everyone a happy holiday season & a great 2009 :)

user-pic

Same to you, dijamo.

From CT Voter and PETE.

user-pic

Dijamo, as John Lennon said many a moon ago, Merry Chrimble and a Gear New Year! :)

user-pic

Wait, why isn't Sarah ranked in high?

user-pic

John Hickenlooper is by far the best candidate to win in 2010.

Josh wants to get the conversation started on the economic recovery after the stimulus by the left and the center (which is the left) and what is seldom mentioned is "REGULATION".

Krugman doesn't even get specific about it. How do you regulate greed? When a small group have grabbed 90% of the wealth and perceive of congress as merely a mechanism for protecting their holdings and their business and that of the multinational corporations, it begs the question..."What's labor got to do with it?"

When half of our economy is stored in the garages of the wealthy and their CEOs then the 'stimulus' is merely placating the working class till they are able once again to continue supporting the holdings of the wealthy.

In order to stop the circular cycle that began in 1920 and has come full circle in 2008 we must confiscate the holdings of the wealthy and return them to the people. Take back the jets, yachts, multiple houses and malls for a start. Stop and cap CEO packages and end these ridiculous salaries of millions and billions being given out to individuals. No one person is worth that kind of compensation package.

Use tariffs and taxes as the means of keeping companies doing business within our nation and regulate the business of doing business within our borders.
Close tax loop holes that only the wealthy can afford to take advantage of. The middle class will spend if wages are high enough to allow them to spend beyond just their 'needs'.

The true wealth of a nation comes form it's working class. It was not the poor, or middle class that brought on our economic disaster. Wealth can only be maintained by restoring it to those who gave it (so to speak)to the wealthy but greed prevents the wealthy from accepting this.

Begin by removing the idea of "personhood" from the corporations. They live but don't die like people and they should be more like the patents on new drugs...they end after a few years. National necessities should be nationalized. As we grow government will grow so it should be made more efficient not "privatized" by greedy profiteers.

Now that's a conversation eh Josh?

Happy celebrations all...may you all be cherished.
