Election Central Saturday Roundup

Obama: We Will Make America The World Leader In Science Again
In his newest Presidential YouTube Address, Barack Obama announced four appointees key posts on science and technology -- and said he would work to restore America's role as the world's leader in science:

"Because the truth is that promoting science isn't just about providing resources--it's about protecting free and open inquiry," Obama says, in a barely-veiled hit at the Bush Administration. "It's about ensuring that facts and evidence are never twisted or obscured by politics or ideology. It's about listening to what our scientists have to say, even when it's inconvenient--especially when it's inconvenient."

The Obamas Go To Hawaii
Barack Obama and his family have gone off to Hawaii, to spend the holidays with his family and friends there. The Obama transition team says he will continue to do transition work during this time.

Biden: Jill Will Still Be Working
In an interview with George Stephanopoulos, Joe Biden said that his wife Jill will still maintain her career as a community college professor, probably on a part-time basis. "But, look, I think it's very important she have and maintain her own life, her own identity," said Biden. "And she'll be a very active second lady."

NYT: Cuomo Frustrated By Kennedy
The New York Times reports that New York Atty. Gen. Andrew Cuomo has become increasingly frustrated at how Caroline Kennedy has overshadowed him in her bid for Hillary Clinton's Senate seat, after he'd made a deliberate decision to not overtly campaign for it. "It's driving him crazy," a Cuomo friend told the Times. "He's boxed in. He can't do anything except fume, and he is fuming."

Ferraro Comes Out Against Caroline Kennedy For Senate
The New York Post reports that Geraldine Ferraro has sent a letter to New York Gov. David Paterson, urging him to not appoint Caroline Kennedy to the Senate. Ferraro told the Post: "If you send someone down there who doesn't know the legislative process, they'll get chewed up alive."

Minnesota Senate Seat's Office Could End Up Closing Temporarily
Roll Call reports that if the Minnesota Senate race is not settled by January 6, the constituent services component of Norm Coleman's office may have to simply shut down: "Senate officials keep an office running when a Member dies or resigns by taking calls from constituents and performing some of the nonvoting tasks of a Member. But there's no such procedure for when a contested election keeps a Senator from taking the seat when Congress reconvenes."

That settles it for me.  If Geraldine Ferraro opposes Caroline Kennedy for Hillary's soon-to-be open Senate seat, then she's gotta be my gal!

user-pic

I know what you mean jzap, but I'm still bothered by CK as a senator. I'm not all that hot on political families running the country as if it were their private right to govern. Here is just a partial run-down from today's NYT. So, though it pains me to be on the same side of this issue as Geraldine Ferraro, I'd still prefer to see someone else. Speaking as a New Yorker (upstate), I wouldn't mind too much if she ran in 2010, but even then. As for Andrew Cuomo, same objection, though at least he has run for and been elected to office in the state.

user-pic

Yeah, I was being mostly facetious.

Dunno much about CK.  Her name recognition is a plus.  Same for Obama choosing her to be on his VP-search committee.  And Ferraro's prediction about her getting chewed up is just a bunch of mean-spirited whiny bullshit.

Also, there's the sentimental value of having a Kennedy as a NY senator.  Bobby was one of my senators when I lived there.

Dunno much about Andrew Cuomo, either.  Good name-recognition there, too.  Experience is probably a plus, except it's given him skeletons for in his closet.  But that's probably just me getting carried away by the apparent inevitability of corruption I'm seeing in Illinois :-)

I'm not really worried about who David Patterson will pick.  For me, this soap opera is definitely For Amusement Only.

Hey, how about Elliot Spitzer?

user-pic
... except it's given him skeletons...

... except if it's given him skeletons...

I have no knowledge that it has.  Just worrying out loud.

user-pic

No skeletons I know about. And Cuomo would seem like a good guy to have -- big supporter of education & a crusader against corruption. Ultimately, I agree, though, this one is mostly for amusement purposes.

user-pic

I'm a former Rochestarian, and I echo your desire for an upstater. I don't think it'll happen, though. But it would be nice (and novel) if upstate New York weren't perennially viewed as a backwater region simply to be endured on the campaign trail.

It's hurting.

user-pic

As Al Giordano pointed out the other day, not only is Andy Cuomo a legacy pol, so is David Patterson. Which makes the anti legacy argument an iffy lobbying tactic if nothing else.

Al's a big CK fan fwiw. I don't claim to be an expert on her, but most of the "debate" I've seen so far has been pretty fatuous. Why does her name have to be either an automatic qualification or an automatic disqualification? (I think it confers some advantages, while raising some questions) And do we really want to make a career in government a prerequisite for our representatives? (Especially when we're choosing between two legacies and that's the main distinction -- in which case we're just pushing governing class further from the governed).

From what I can tell about CK's life and work, we could probably do quite a bit worse. And for what it's worth, she's be more representative of New York than either her Uncle Bobby or The Hillary ever were.

user-pic

Love the avatar. And I don't really disagree all that much, though I am surprised by some of the celebrity worship I've seen directed at CK. I still don't like legacy pols & that's my real objection, not not CK herself, who I don't know that much about. Having said that, her roll out has seemed pretty inept.

user-pic

Nah, they're both lame. It's just a coincidence that you agree with her.

user-pic

Let's put this in a simpler perspective:

A. Caroline Kennedy as a US Senator

or

B. Sara Palin as Vice President

Which do you think is up to the challenge and has a better chance at success?

user-pic

I don't get the comparison.

user-pic

I'm going to withhold judgment until I see what Lady De Rothschild says.

user-pic

LOL!

Wonder if Caroline is too "elite" for the Lady?

(Talk about industrial-strength cluelessness....)

user-pic

If anyone thinks Caroline Kennedy won't ahve the bes staff on the Hill they have got to be kidding themselves. Her uncle will make sure she is well taken care of.

user-pic

Co-sign!

user-pic

As I see it, that is precisely the problem. Ans how come she can't speak for herself? A staff person gave written responses to questions from a journalist? WTF? And her staff pulled her away from reporters in Syracuse? Shades of Sarah Palin, imho.

user-pic

oh my gawd! Dude, I read that, and had exactly the same thought, and then I hit the comments and the very first post is yours.

Kennedy it is then. I am so on board with CK right now, if only to see the heads pop on MarKOS , Jane Hamsher, and Ferraro all at once.

Pop, pop, POP!!!

fuck yeah, I'm a child, but no less so than all the people having hissy fits about the appointment to Hillary "I'm so about using my name" Clinton. Not that she shouldn't have, use all that God gives you I say, but the irony...

rock on Caroline, rock on.

And she just came out for gay marriage. You go girl.

user-pic

Why are we still being exposed to the toxic statements of Ferraro? Aren't there federal protection laws against this kind of stuff appearing on my screen? Pop up Ferraro statements are more repulsive than pop up porn pictures! Someone needs to talk to Josh about this issue - I thought TPM was a family blog.

user-pic

Ferraro came out against Caroline? Yippee! That guarantees Carolina will be the next Senator from the Great State of New York!

Ferraro is a washed-up ole hag with the political skills of a dead skunk. And after all of those ridiculous comments she made about Obama only being where he is only becuase he's black, I'm sure the black governor will really want to do her a solid and reject Caroline. NOT!

user-pic

Cuomo never had a chance with Paterson, not after going on about Obama "shuckin' and jivin'". Paterson may be blind but he can see that that's derrogatory language toward blacks.

user-pic

Hey, quit crapping on dead skunks!

user-pic

Me too. I think I'm much more comfortable with the idea of Senator Caroline Kennedy now.

"Chewed up alive" - the way Geraldine was in the primaries?

Also, Jill Biden will continue teaching at the community college. How cool is that?

user-pic

I guess it's a sign just how bad the economy really is when the VP has to have a second job just to make ends meet.

user-pic

OT: I stated a TPM blog regarding how the economy is affecting people across the board, and some of the stories are compelling and also, very disheartening. Yet the determination to look at the bright side is astounding. If so inclined, check it out. Thanks.

http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/talk/blogs/middlechild/2008/12/how-is-the-economy-affecting-y.php#comments

user-pic

Started, sorry. Maybe I should put on the reading glasses.

user-pic

I agree that if Ferraro is against Caroline from becoming the next Senator from NY than I am all for Caroline as the next Senator!!!

user-pic

Where did Ferraro find a reporter who'd talk to her?

user-pic

Now that's funny.

user-pic

Actually, of all the things Eric noted in the roundup, the bit about Obama's emphasis on science makes me happiest and most hopeful for the future. The fact that we have had a president for the last eight years who at least pays lip service to the idea that the earth is 6,000 years old is not just an embarrassment, it has had huge negative effects on our ability to solve basic problems and take seriously things like climate change.

user-pic

You can believe God created the earth (as I do) and still conduct things scientifically. When people, on either side of the spectrum, see things as black and white you always lose. Obama's greatest asset may be his ability to go straight into the grey and solve problems.

user-pic

Yeah, I've been seeing a lot of that kind of relativism around here lately. Lots of folks seem to think that the world is made out of equally valid opinions, not facts. But I think we have to start with the facts and fit our opinions (beliefs) to them.

user-pic

Sure God created the Earth, but God did it a lot MORE than 6000 years ago. Heck McCain is that old and most folks would agree that dinosaurs came before McAncient.

Oh and yes, the Obama science picks are great! John Holdren and the people he will bring in will be outstanding! There is hope...

user-pic

What happened to Golden Duke nominees?

user-pic

It isn't just Bush's view regarding science, but that they completely and explicitly politicized scientific research, something they did on all fronts and issues. Best summed up by John Dilulio, served as the first director of the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives under President Bush:

In eight months, I heard many, many staff discussions, but not three meaningful, substantive policy discussions. There were no actual policy white papers on domestic issues. There were, truth be told, only a couple of people in the West Wing who worried at all about policy substance and analysis, and they were even more overworked than the stereotypical, nonstop, 20-hour-a-day White House staff. Every modern presidency moves on the fly, but, on social policy and related issues, the lack of even basic policy knowledge, and the only casual interest in knowing more, was somewhat breathtaking — discussions by fairly senior people who meant Medicaid but were talking Medicare; near-instant shifts from discussing any actual policy pros and cons to discussing political communications, media strategy, et cetera. Even quite junior staff would sometimes hear quite senior staff pooh-pooh any need to dig deeper for pertinent information on a given issue.

Likewise, every administration at some point comes to think of the White House as its own private tree house, to define itself as "us" versus "them" on Capitol Hill, or in the media, or what have you, and, before 100 days are out, to vest ever more organizational and operational authority with the White House's political, press, and communications people, both senior and junior. I think, however, that the Bush administration — maybe because they were coming off Florida and the election controversy, maybe because they were so unusually tight-knit and "Texas," maybe because the chief of staff, Andy Card, was more a pure staff process than a staff leader or policy person, or maybe for other reasons I can't recognize — was far more inclined in that direction, and became progressively more so as the months pre-9/11 wore on.

This gave rise to what you might call Mayberry Machiavellis — staff, senior and junior, who consistently talked and acted as if the height of political sophistication consisted in reducing every issue to its simplest, black-and-white terms for public consumption, then steering legislative initiatives or policy proposals as far right as possible. These folks have their predecessors in previous administrations (left and right, Democrat and Republican), but, in the Bush administration, they were particularly unfettered.

Obama's science team picks have been absolutely fabulous selections! After eight years of an anti-science Middle Ages attitude, it is wonderful to see science at the forefront again. This is real change we have been expecting from Obama!

user-pic

One of the reasons I was so excited about Obama being president from the beginning was that I saw in him, as opposed to the other Democratic candidates, someone who would actively work to make this country embrace and respect the intellect.

user-pic

I'm a scientist (ex-academic, now a forensic scientist) and watching that talk made me feel warm all over. What an intense relief after the past 8 years of know-nothingism.

user-pic
...someone who would actively work to make this country embrace and respect the intellect.

Could that be because Obama, unlike most politicians, is actually an intellectual himself, comes from an academic background, and has surrounded himself his whole adult life with other intellectuals?

It's about time.

user-pic

Yes, I do believe this to be the case. Just in my experience, many of the people who go into law, and politics, are not intellectuals, although they may be quite intelligent. They remind of this one teacher who was in a Masters in Education program with me and who stated during the Philosophy of Education course, "why do we have to take classes like these, I just want to learn how to teach better." And a majority of those in the classes nodded their head in agreement. It is sad.

user-pic

"Geraldine Ferraro has sent a letter to New York Gov. David Paterson, urging him to not appoint Caroline Kennedy to the Senate."

She added, "And for God's sake don't appoint one of those horrible Black people!"

user-pic

Well if Geraldine Ferraro is against Kennedy, I'm now for Kennedy, because Geraldine Ferraro is a crazy bitch.

And no, that isn't sexist, she worked hard to earn that title, by being a crazy (racist) bitch.

user-pic

The crude always trashes the class...

I'm vehemently opposed to legacy politics, in situations where the legacy is incomeptent. But CK is by no means incompetent, and we should judege her and everyone else by their own character, not by their parentage. Her credentials are at least impressive and at most, unquestionable. They are without a doubt more than sufficient to qualify her for the Senate. Consider some of the dunderheads who inhabit that hall, right now, and she makes them look like Knuckledragging Neanderthals(R).

Ferraro's proven her deepening moral and political confusion already this election season, you would think someone who cares for her would encourage her to STFU, for the sake of her future in the party.

I have come to doubt Ferraro's Dem creds, unless you consider that she's the Queen of the DINO's, which may just be the case.

Caroline Kennedy deserves our respect, and our support. Regardless of who her parents are, based solely on her own story.

user-pic

Will Barack's western White House be in Hawaii?

Cool.

user-pic

Ferraro is the ultimate PUMA. I have no doubt that Kennedy will be able to "operate" in the senate just fine, because she will know the right people, etc.

The problem is nepotism and the fact that she really has no connection to the middle and working classes.

user-pic

Geraldine Ferraro doesn't give a rat's ass about Caroline's effectivness in the Senate. She's still fighting the primary. Unlike Hillary who will bloom where she is planted, Ferraro just likes to spread manure.

user-pic

Just for fun. From one of the most seasoned, powerful and well-connected Democrats:

Illinois governor seems to be growing stronger

I wouldn't bet on him stepping aside anytime soon. If anything, his hand is getting stronger by the day.

I can't go into details, but my impression is that the whole mess started because the governor had been considering appointing a political rival, Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan, to the Senate so she wouldn't be able to run against him when he went up for re-election in 2010.

Apparently, Obama's people weren't happy about the idea of Madigan coming to Washington, and there were some pretty heated conversations between Blagojevich and Obama chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, which I understand will burn your ears off.

user-pic

An article from the society page writer of the SF Chronicle... really? Deep political insight from a phone call, followed directly by a recap of Hillary Swank's hosting of a gala thrown by Emirates Airlines and bumping into Quincy Jones. PLEASE! Where do you find this drivel?

user-pic

Former California Speaker of the Assembly and former Mayor and he's black.

Who the fuck are you?

user-pic

Former California Speaker of the Assembly for over a decade and former two-term Mayor of San Francisco and he's black.

Who the fuck are you?

user-pic

I shouldn't, but... If the indictment was meant at retaliation for Blagojevich's desire to appoint Madigan, why the hell would Madigan have filed suit with the Illinois Supreme Court to deem him unfit for office?

user-pic

Because once the dime was dropped she had to distance herself.

Pretty simple but that may be too much for you to comprehend.

Obama : A Seamless Refurbished Bush

FARHAT MAQUAMI
While the Liberals are talking about another socialite to be nominated to replace Hillary Clinton, Neo-Cons stole the Election and are setting policies for a "seamless" transition of Bush Policies to Obamas obama'agenda!
The Liberals should not be surprised by Obama’s selection of the Right Wing Evangelist Rick Warren because they don’t understand Obama. Their infatuation with Obama has blinded Obama’s social philosophy.

Those on the left, or anti-war movement are surprised by the direction Obama has taken to the right. Lets make it clear Obama has never said he is Anti-War, pro-Black civil right activist, or progressive in economic theory or Future of Military Missions of the Empire. The Progressives are still daydreaming and are giving him the benefit of the doubt.
With every Cabinet appointment he is proving to be a refurbished Bush. His election, the Festivities of his inauguration, the rhetoric of Change might prove to be the smokescreen to fool the world America has changed while carrying the same bankrupt policies.

As he declared vigorously the night he disconnected his connection with the Black Church and his spiritual mentor :” Reverent Wright does not know me.” He should have continued I used the Black Church to get elected in Chicago, I used them to get elected in the Senate, I used it to unseat Clinton ; since I never thought of my self as Black , never shared their history. I was born from a white mother an a Kenyan Father.

The infatuation of the Liberal America and disillusioned Americans with the Republican Party,
and 6 years of war which has brought disrepute to America outside and economic bankruptcy to the US economy, has not permitted them to question Obama’s Policies. Yet, sooner or later the Liberals would notice that they have been betrayed not in the war in Iraq but a wide range of policies. Lets analyze all the contradictions. The trick is the phrase he is using now “seamless transition”!

In Defense he is going to use Robert Gate so the Bush agenda in Iraq would continue ”seamlessly” ! He has never made a clear statement after the election about Iraq. He never told Iraqis that he is getting out in 18 months and they better vote to pick-up the bill.
Like Bush and McCain he wants to close the Guantanamo Bay Torture Chamber, but he is not saying how to release the torture victims or how is he going to prosecute those who violated the international law and American Human Right Principals by torturing innocents, driving many to commit suicide and others who have become mentally deranged. He is not declaring to the World that Americans are going to wash their hands of the blood of innocents in Abo Gharieb prison by bringing these criminals to trial. He wants bi-partisanship, while Bush drove this country to the edge of madness by far lesser Vote in a disputed election and never sought bipartisanship for his reign of terror.
In iraq, he now wants a “seamless” withdrawal and carry it out by letting the same Generals follow the same agenda and carry us to hell of political disrepute and economic disaster.
He forced the Democrats to keep Liberman, who is more vicious than Bush administration toward Iraq and Domestic surveillance as Chairman of the powerful Homeland Security. The left is still simmering in infatuation so all concern have not even considered the implication of this stupid act as Obama’s framework of action toward war and national security.
He put a 4 Star general and a close friend of McCain in charge of his National Security.
He has made many speeches and funny interviews, yet he has not still told the world that the vicious, illegal, and universally condemned Bush Doctrine of Preemptive War would be rejected on his first day in office. This would assure the world that we would be entering a new era of cooperation, diplomacy and the rule of law.
He is probably going to announce that he would keep the FBI and the CIA Director for another seamless transition rather that making a declaration that while in presidency he would ensure that he would issue a new Executive Order to stop all Extraordinary Renditions and Country’s adherence to Geneva Convention.
In order to calm the world he also should declare that he would stop the War on Terror which has not only terrorized the world but encouraged and enabled every anti-democratic regimes and every Feudal Warlord to use the most vicious methods to terrorize their own people. We have never heard from him that he is a man of Peace, wants to bring Peace to the World and to achieve this would stop supporting the undemocratic government. Most opposition of various Islamic group is not to Americans or America but to the American support of their oppressive regimes and therefore America is going to bring Peace to the world, not by arms but by diplomacy.
Government as Instrument of ruling Class

The economic collapse of the US financial bastion of the US Empire has brought about the beginning of the end of Capitalism. Capitalism under the guise of Free Trade has brought global disaster. The collapse of the myth of progress, economic expansions, massive consumption simply cannot work in a world with limited resources.
Revolution in rising expectation of the masses of dispossessed would be the beginning of the end of Capitalism as we know it. There would be riots, disturbances , spontaneous revolts against the ruling class in every continent. The revolt of “have-nots” against the “haves” would be in Global scale in the whole world.

Capitalist Countries of the G8 and now G20 are the one who can manipulate currency market, Print Currencies of thin air and find customers to buy their bonds in the open market. Yet no one has even thought what would be the impact of these printing worthless papers, then deceive the world to sell their goods and then re-spend it in purchasing other products . What would happen at the end is you have too much currency circulating in the market would cause the collapse of the market, as the money becomes useless. The money that the US prints has value so far as there are dictators who can squeeze them out of their working class, exploit their masses and transfer the ‘Surplus Value” back to the US banks in forms of “treasury Bonds”! What Chinese Communists are doing in China is similar to what dictotors in the Mid-east have been doing for decades.
War on Terror was preemptive attack on pupular uprising, revolt of the masses, National resistance to Oppressive Regimes imposed on countries deprived from basic human rights.
Mobarak, King Faisel, Khadaffi, Malaki and Karzaii are just the tip of the Iceburg. We are arming these puppets to teeth, show the best way to torture and subvert resistance and call every indigenous Liberation Movement a “Terrorist Organization.” These policies can halt the resistance but would never stop innovations to face the oppression and the human desire to be Free. That is whay Obma, if he has any human decency must Change course not only in Iraq but the whole notion of the “War on Terror.”, or what is referred to as war without end!

Empires went to war not because their desire to conquer. Empire went to war for economic reason to control trade routs, to get raw materials, weather it was salt, grains, arable lands, gold or finished products. They did not go to war to waste money. They did not go to war and spend human lives and precious resources just to make other Warlords, and drug dealers rich or help them build a better distributing system.

The US is going into Afghanistan under an Obama administration on a humanitarian mission to civilize them while fighting Taliban! But Taliban is Islam and Islam is their religion then how you want to change them and what God give you mission to change them.
Finally, you need your resources in this country to build roads, and build infrastructure not in Afghanistan! Why we are financing 450000 mercenaries and troops in Iraq and paying for 600000 Iraqis as our extra Security force when we need the money here! We would be spending for 70000 US troops in addition to 200000 mercenaries in Afghanistan. Obama should tell us where he gets these billions of dollars ? And why he would be borrowing money to spend in Afghanistan while we need factories here?
Obama was the candidate of Wall Street and he was the one who went to Capital hill and twisted arms of Democratic Representatives, threatened them with possibility of Marshal law to get 750 billions dollars for the Bankers. He has never objected to the fact that a bankrupt Government is printing money out of thin air, creating public debts, to help the capitalists, in a free market economy! Obama has proved to be the advocate of “Socialism for the Rich” and free fall for the masses!

He was the one who actually intimidated 15 Black representatives to vote for Bush 750 Billion package which more than half of it went to subsidize the Banks buying other banks and the rest is going buy toxic assets, bad debts and mortgages. By appointing people like the Chairman of Federal reserve in NY, and all other insiders, who bare responsible for our economic disaster, he is proving more and more to be the Candidate of Wall Street. CitiBank got 20 Billion in one second, yet Three Auto-makers had to go through much humiliation for a fifteen billion dollars loan.

It seems that he does not understand that building an "economic base" means that this country must produce goods that we may sell. Therefore we must be a producer nation and have factories, not a nation who builds "infrastructure", roads, solar panels, bridges in which it transports manufactured products from China, India and Mexico. He talks about building “infrastructure”; infrastructure is a service to transport products, not an industrial production base! It is a fraud upon the future of America if all these “Bail Outs” are actually using public money to help the Capitalists and Bankers to exploit the working class.
Obama's proposed Public projects would bring 3 Trillions dollars Budget Deficit without seriously facing the real problem. US needs to produce goods that we can sell abroad, so we reduce our balance of trade deficit!
Obama has never declared his opposition to NFTA, de-Reaganization of our economy. re-industrialization of the US,reducing balance of trade, and stopping the imperialistic War Policies of the Bush administration which has cost us close to a trillion dollars.

Until we reject the principal that "out-sourcing" is wrong for this nation and spending on guns for future wars means throwing the future of this great nation outside, and depending on issuing Treasury Bonds, borrowing from China, consuming cheap products from abroad, transferring our technology and factories abroad for cheaper labor, we would never solve our economic problems.

Obama has never revealed how we are going to pay for almost 5 Trillion Dollars bogus money to be printed by the Federal Reserve out of the Tin Air in order to save this economy. How are we going to survive if we do not negotiate our way out of NAFTA ?
How the 5 trillion dollars of increase in National Debts would impair our prosperity as a debtor to seriously impair our economic future.

In all his daily shows ,parades of his new administration, and his constant rhetoric for fools, there is nothing as yet to address the Military-Wall street Complex, which has brought this great nation to its knees and would continue to do so!

Until now he has proved to be as "seamless" as Bush could be with a Black Mask. It is up those who were deceived by his rhetoric not fall into his justification and excuses and expose his hypocrisy. After all you did nor elect a Black candidate to become the darling of Wall Street, idol of Fox news, the protagonist for Evangelists and apologist for War on Terror.
