NBC Execs Predict Matthews Won't Run For Senate

So is Chris Matthews really going to run for Senate from Pennsylvania? Two NBC execs have independently said that they don't believe so, and they think he's sticking around.

NBC News chief Steve Capus said Matthews isn't running: "Well, look, if he were running for office, he wouldn't be on TV."

Meanwhile, MSNBC president Phil Griffin cast doubt on the idea, too. "I've talked to Chris. I think he's going to be here for a long time," Griffin said. "I want him to be here for a long time."

Maybe Sean Hannity will give it a go?

It's way too early to be considering a run in 2010 ... the eleveny-first(that's 111 for those non Tolkien-LOTR fans) Congress hasn't been seated yet.

Better to wait and see what the issues will be first before you toss your hat into the ring.

Au contraire...If Matthews wants to run, he needs to announce - and soon.

Pennsylvania is not kind to first-time seekers of high office. And, if Matthews were to survive a Democratic primary (which is absolutely not guaranteed), his opposition is a venerable four-term Republican who has crossover appeal.

And, if that weren't enough, Matthews made some comments about Hillary Clinton during this past primary season that are likely to be trundled out against him. (It should be remembered that Clinton easily won PA's primary.) Matthews will need to do some serious moonwalking to erase those memories.

I think he used the possibility as a bargaining chip and nothing more. Didn't he just re-sign afterall? Maybe the network was playing hardball saying Matthews style wouldn't work/fit anywhere else and he had to accept what NBC was offering.

Thank goodness. The less celebrity candidates in the Senate the better. Hate to say it, but Caroline doesn't strike me as all that impressive either.

Where have all the Paul Wellstones gone?

May they rest in peace.

Matthews has perpetual foot in mouth problems. He would be a lousy candidate, although it would be entertaining to see him at the receiving end of the punditry instead of dishing it out. Most pundits could use a little humility.

Two-part Overreach analysis:

1. This is self-serving:

*NBC News chief Steve Capus said..."Well, look, if he were running for office, he wouldn't be on TV."*

In other words, Capus has no conflict. Since Matthews isn't running, it's okay that he's on TV so Capus can't be criticized.

2. And this means nothing: "I [think/]want him to be here for a long time." A bit of blarney is all.
