Lugar's Office Says He's Not Proposing To Call Bill Clinton At Hillary Confirmation Hearings
Looks like the notion that Republicans might try to get Bill Clinton to testify at Hillary's Secretary of State confirmation hearings, as had been reported today in various places, is shaping up as a complete non-starter.
A spokesperson for Senator Richard Lugar, the head Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, which will hold the hearing, tells us that he isn't proposing to call Bill as a witness -- making it all but certain not to happen.
"He is not proposing it," Lugar spokesperson Andy Fisher emails us. "The agenda for the hearing will be determined by Senator Kerry."
The notion that Bill might be called to testify started making the rounds today after Politico reported that some conservative Senate Republicans were privately pushing the idea. Cable news has since been babbling about the possibility intermittently today.
But Lugar's office threw cold water on the possibility. "We know nothing about it other than what was reported in The Politico," Lugar's spokesperson emailed.
The quotes from Lugar's office pretty much ice the idea. While it's still possible that conservative Republicans on the committee could try to call Bill as a witness, the procedure holds that a majority of the committee would have to support the idea, Senate staffers point out.
When the hearings commence next year, Dems will outnumber Republicans on the committee (as they do now). The notion that Dems would back the calling of Bill as a witness, and the attendant media circus that would result, is daft, to put it charitably.
So don't expect Bill to be called to testify. Not gonna happen.

Why won't Luger call Bill? How long has he known he wouldn't call Bill? Has anyone on his staff had contacts with people who might want to call Bill? What is Luger hiding and how long has he been hiding it? Will Luger be able to escape the taint of not calling Bill?

You're right. When there's smoke, there's usually someone who claims he quit smoking. Let's call Obama while we're at it.

What is Rahmbo's role in all this ? Surely, he must be involved ? Obama should fire Rahmbo, Holder, Clinton et.al. and start all over. Better yet, let's have an another election.

"Reported in The Politico" should have been the first sign there was nothing to this.

They have become the National Enquirer of politics.

Screw the Repubs. They still don't seem to grasp that they are the minority party, more in the next congress than the last.
Former President Clinton should play no role in Hillary's confirmation hearings. I understand the different circumstances since her husband is the former president and has ties, financial and otherwise, all around the world, but this is the height of sexism.

I am actually a little disappointed Bill won't be up there testifying. I have complete confidence in President Clinton's ability to make any of those republican lemmings who think they can outwit him look like fools. I think deep down there's a little part of Bill Clinton that yearns for a 'Back-in-the-spotlight' nose thumbing. Either way, I don't see it hurting President-elect Obama or Secretary of State-designate Clinton.

I would say that there is deep down a big part of Bill that years for a Back in the spotlight momemnt, nose thumbing or otherwise.

TheE,
I was hoping to see Bill Clinton at the witness table as he says to Republican Senator David Vitter;
"Well Senator Vitter, we have something in common, we both cheated on our wives."
Clinton couldn't hurt himself, but that would be a nuclear bomb dropped on the sleazy Republicans that called him as a witness only to try to humiliate him.
God, what a "Film at 6:00" moment that would make on the networks.

It's not really about whether Bill will testify or not (either way Obama and Hill would be fine). It's that this is yet another manifestation of what kind of game the Repugs and the media are still so eager to play -- keep pursuing dramas and scandals when seriousness is desperately needed.

Which only shows what kind of circus it would have been had Hillary been chosen to be VP, the media would have Bill deep in the thick of every move and appointment regarding the transition.

I agree. I am sure the media orgy of the potentiality of VP nominee Hillary Clinton is one of many reasons why Obama passed her over for Vice-President elect Joe Biden.

I am so sick of the Politico, WSJ, CNN, FOX, WAPO and all the other ass-backwards msm. It's no wonder most americans now get their news from the internet, i.e. blogs.

It's going to be interesting to see how Lugar balances his being a Republican with his relationship with Obama. The two are friends and Lugar was somewhat of a mentor to Obama in the Senate. While I don't expect Lugar will totally abandon his opposition status I suspect he'll be resistant to knee-jerk Republican opposition and interference just for the sake of partisan battle.
But how much of an ally he'll be to Obama is something I'm very curious to see.

1. Actually lugar is pretty moderate. He votes the party line alot of times, but he is definitely not a flamethrower. I put him in the mold of ex-senator warner from va. Kind of an old school senator prior to the current hyper-partisanship. I actually like the guy as well.
2. I actually think that he will support alot of obama's agenda, along with alot of other republican senators. They are looking at being totally marginalized if they don't play ball.

Kerry and the dems will control the witnesses. Mr. bill is an arrogant, narcissistic fool in my book. Luckily he won't be testifying because he would embarrass himself, clinton and the obama administration. Send him asap as special envoy to kashmire to deal with the crisis there and get him out of the middle of what is going on. You get a twofer. He's far away from the limelight and can do as little damage as possible and he actually might do some good.

Are any topics "off limits" during confirmation hearings - for any appointed political office?
