Election Central Morning Roundup
Gaza Crisis Posing Tough Questions For Obama And Bush
The fighting in Gaza is shaping up to be the first international crisis facing Barack Obama -- and he hasn't even been sworn in yet, while the Obama transition team is thus far deferring to the Bush Administration on the question. "As the fighting in Gaza shows, however," the New York Times points out, "events in the world do not necessarily wait for Inauguration Day in the United States."
Obama Goes To The Bathroom
The traveling press pool on Barack Obama's attempted Hawaii vacation have thus far documented the president-elect visiting a high school friend, getting some food -- and going to the bathroom.
Klobuchar: Senate Should Seat Recount Winner, Pending Litigation
Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) is calling for the Senate to provisionally seat the winner of the state's recount -- who at this point looks like it will be Al Franken -- even though the race won't be officially settled due to an expected post-recount election contest in court. Minnesota law officially prohibits a full certification of a victory until a contest proceeding is over, which could prevent the seating of a Senator for weeks or perhaps even a month or two.
Terry McAuliffe -- And His Money -- Making Mark On Virginia Gov Race
The Washington Post reports that Terry McAuliffe's fundraising operation is making a big impact on the Virginia gubernatorial race, with many observers believing that he could spend up to $80 million on the race. Randal Kirk, major state Democratic fundraiser who has committed to supporting McAuliffe, said that McAuliffe can instantly appeal to voters: "He has an astonishingly strong personality."
RNC Members Call Special Meeting To Host Candidates
In the latest sign that the race for RNC chairman is really heating up, committee members have for the first time ever called their own special RNC meeting, without orders from the national party. The meeting is being held as a forum for the candidates now running for the chairmanship, so it shouldn't come as a shock that it was called outside the auspices of the national leadership -- after all, the current party chairman Mike Duncan is in a tough fight for re-election against a wide field of challengers.
Caroline Kennedy: "You Know"
Ben Smith points out that during her interview with the New York Times, Caroline Kennedy used the phrase "you know" to fill in pauses a total of 142 times.

You know, I bet the RNC is calling the special meeting to you know remind members to keep their racism under you know control you know. You know, by the way you know thanks for the you know image of our you know next president taking a you know dump, you know?

You know, Obama isn't president yet so you know that him weighing in on the middle east crisis is you know a dumb thing. You know the world will just have to wait. The best thing you know that Obama should do you know is to keep a low profile on a foreign policy crisis. Obama can way in you know in a domestic economic crisis but without any authority at all, you know that he shouldn't way in a foreign policy crisis.

Ya know, oh jeez, they really should let Franken take the, ya know, Senate Seat for a bit, ya know. Until they, ya know, figure out this whole, ya know, recount mess fellas, yah?
As for following the, ya know, President-elect into the bathroom, I just think I'm gonna barf!

You clever clever person! You managed to say nothing at all and yet say all that needs to be said.
Things are more like they are now than they've ever been...

That wasn't snark BTW. I really do think your comment was clever :-)

Ever count the "ummms" when Obama goes unscripted?
But also too there is the issue of after the talking being accomplished and so with those that do the speaking, that when the words being said and also too in analyzing that which is spoken, and when you look, as in this case also is, at the objectives of the speaker saying the words. But also, it is important to realize that those speaking have objectives in their words to accomplish that which those who speak, so you can't just look at the words but also too the intent of those who talk at what the desired accomplishments were and too if those who have talked can be looked at and if the things they said can be related, in the minds of those real Americans who hear honestly when they listen, and so too is the challenge here with the final accomplishment of the words being spoken and the understanding that is gained from listening to the talking and knowing the good, decent quality of those Americans who listened.

What exactly does the NYT want Obama to do? and why should Obama listen to them? This is a crisis and we don't need two opposing views dealing with this problem. I've also seen calls for statements - and then what? These call for statements always boggle me. What the hell is a statement going to do? Nada, Zip, Zilch - it only serves to satisfy the press. I'm tired of statements, someone just needs to do something.

I have to admit I was rather surprised by this "you know" speech quirk from Caroline. Somehow I thought her speaking voice would be more controlled.

Quite honestly, this CK interview is the worst interview I've read in a long time. Not b/c of the "you knows" but b/c the interviewers are absolutely PATHETIC. Just horrible. Take out the "you knows" and she is clearly a very capable person giving cogent answers. Not so sure about the NYT peeps. Sad.

Wasn't Russia condemned for their response to Georgia being over-the-top compared to the initial act, however now the official response to the Israeli/Hamas battle is "Israel is completely within it's rights to defend itself"?
Similarly when 9/11 happened the US gave the Taliban the opportunity to turn over bin Laden and al Qaeda and when they didn't they declared war, however now are calling for India to show restraint eventhough Pakistan will not turn over the Mumbai plotters/supporters.

The difference is that we are all Georgians now.

This is the kind of, you know, detail that makes Caroline a spooky perfect replacement for, you know, Hillary.

Barack Obama is President-elect.
Barack Obama is President-elect.
What does the MSM not understand about President-elect? It would be counterproductive for the president elect to step on the toes of the current president. And for Christ-sakes, i wish the MSM would stop recording Obama's every move.

Terry McAuliffe -- And His Money -- Making Mark On Virginia Gov Race
I just hope Virginia primary voters figure out what kind of government they can expect from a guy who can raise $80 million for himself, but never bothered to raise a dime for anyone else in Virginia.
We need a governor who wants to serve the state, not the other way around.

You know, Hillary says "you know" a lot too. Some people just have annoying ticks. I don't have TV so I don't notice this sort of thing anymore. It's awesome.

The resolution for vacant seats like the one Franken should be filling should be to reduce the number of votes needed to over ride a filibuster by the number of such seats. Change the rules and watch the Republicans change their tune.

And what is to keep the Repugnants from filibustering the, you know, legislation to change the, you know, rules?

Actually the pool report that included the bathroom stop was pretty funny.

The pool report:
We arrived at 1141am, but were told this was likely just a restroom stop at what appears to be a rather well-appointed resort. At least that was the view from where we were held, inside the van, which sadly does not have a bathroom.
Sure enough, we were back underway at 1153am.
Bladders still full, you[r] pool was able to confirm that Michelle is along for this Sunday drive, as are the girls, Eric Whitaker and Marty Nesbitt.
Just like the sign in the dressing room says: "Don't pee in the pool."
