Election Central Saturday Roundup

Obama Announces HUD Secretary, Discusses Financial Crisis
Barack Obama used his Presidential YouTube Address today to announce the appoint of New York City housing commissioner Shaun Donovan to be his Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, and to discuss the importance of housing issues in solving the financial crisis:

"He knows that we can put the dream of owning a home within reach for more families, so long as we're making loans in the right way, and so long as those who buy a home are prepared for the responsibilities of homeownership," Obama says.

No Obama Or Biden Events Today
Barack Obama is in Chicago today, while Joe Biden is in Delaware. There are no public events scheduled for today.

Trib: Rahm Spoke With Blago
The Chicago Tribune reports that Rahm Emanuel did have discussions with Rod Blagojevich about Barack Obama's vacant Senate seat, giving Blago a list of candidates that were considered to be acceptable appointees. "The revelation does not suggest Obama's new gatekeeper was involved in any talk of dealmaking involving the seat," the Trib is careful to point out. "But it does help fill in the gaps surrounding a question that Obama was unable or unwilling to answer this week: Did anyone on his staff have contact with Blagojevich about his choice for the Senate seat?"

Report: Blago Could Announce Plans As Soon As Monday
The Chicago Sun-Times reports that Rod Blagojevich could decide as early as Monday whether he should resign. "He was blindsided by this," a source told the Sun-Times. "He needs some time to digest what's going on. He's going to make his position clear shortly."

Senate Dems Plan Quick Confirmation Hearings
Senate Democrats plan to move quickly to confirm Barack Obama's cabinet appointments, once Congress reconvenes on January 6. Most of the appointments should sail through very easily, though there is one sticking point: Senate Republicans have been asking for a delay in the confirmation hearings of Eric Holder for Attorney General.

Bayh Forming Senate "Blue Dog" Group
Evan Bayh is trying to create a new caucus for moderate Democrats in the Senate, modeled on the Blue Dog caucus in the House. "I think we have a wonderful opportunity to break the gridlock that has existed in Washington for too long," Bayh told Roll Call. "We need to do that in practical ways that will solve problems."

Rat Warning Sign Disappears From Near Blago's House
This is funny: Chicago officials believe Rod Blagojevich or an aide may have removed a warning sign noting the presence of rats from an alley outside his house, after he was photographed with the sign in view of the camera. The city plans to put up another sign.

Shorter Trib: OBAMA IS TAINTED!!!!!!!! We're sure of it!!!

user-pic

The Chicago Tribune DID NOT say Rahm spoke to the governor. It said he called the "Chief of Staff".

user-pic

I'm afraid I don't get your point.

Rahm Emanuel, President-elect Barack Obama's pick to be White House chief of staff, had conversations with Gov. Rod Blagojevich's administration about who would replace Obama in the U.S. Senate, the Tribune has learned.

The Trib isn't saying he spoke to the governor with this statement, as you say, but what's your point?

user-pic

The point is that Kleefield did say he spoke with the Gov in his write up above. The Trib said Rahm spoke to the Gov Chief of Staff not the Governor.

user-pic

I'm just so thrilled to know that Benedict Bayh is going to start up a caucus. I expect he'll have to wrestle Traitor Joe for leadership. Praise the Lord, they are going to save the Republic from the angry left. We were about to take over any second. Really.

user-pic

Thank God he wasn't chosen for Veep.

user-pic

The daily tracking poll from Gallup and Ras has Obama with his highest rating ever... So the media trying make this into an Obama scandal is an epic fail................

user-pic

Bayh is forming a group to make it easy for voters to identify what spineless, meddling, wishy-washy Democrats to vote against in upcoming primaries and elections. Thanks, for making that so much easier, Evan!!!

user-pic

Good point. Easier to keep track of the little critters this way...

user-pic

Oh, you'll find those dogs following after that Shelby fella. Any day old Bayh will be telling us that what the good folks in the rust belt really voted for was lower wages and fewer benefits.

user-pic

Well, what decent flag-loving American wouldn't want lower wages and less healthcare?

The damn UAWs make eleventy-thousand dollars a year, and have healthcare that's better than God's, so why wouldn't they make just the teensiest tiniest concession?????

I thought Gettelfinger was smart to respond with that press conference yesterday, but I have to say I'm disappointed that the union didn't get out after that $73 an hour salary story more effectively.

(Same with the Employee Free Choice Act...)

What? They thought Republicans would play honorably?

user-pic

Well, you are supposed to believe in the post-partisan end of ideology. Instead, we have one party willing to generate The Greatest Depression if it helps them kill a union and the other party which now claims to have no ideology but only the mission to compromise on anything, no matter what. So what's it going to be Democrats are we giving up health care or maybe paid vacation or would you like to trade them a child labor law, maybe OSHA? And what do we get in return? Oh, I forgot, compromise! Put that in your sandwich and have it for lunch. Thanks, Blue Dogs!! We knew you could do it!!

user-pic

Another dire "the Democrats are nothing but bend-over surrender monkeys" rant. Why am I not surprised?

user-pic

They tend to be prompted by Bayh's offers of preemptive surrender.

user-pic

{rolling eyes} Bayh's name wasn't mentioned last week when you were ranting about Obama betraying liberals, blah, blah, blah. Being angry and disgruntled is apparently your default position.

user-pic
Well, what decent flag-loving American wouldn't want lower wages and less healthcare?

Exactly.  It's patriotic.  Just like wanting to pay more taxes.

user-pic

Great, thats all we need in the Senate, a third, Republican-lite party to have to deal with. Oh well, we can just count them out of that "magic 60 seats" and work our asses off to get enough seats so that they don't matter...

user-pic

Bayh is already planning his 2016 Presidential run is all.

user-pic

This just shows the growing power of the Blue Dogs in the House. They've officially leaked over into the next chamber.

I bet smarmy Bayh has received a ton of donations from House Blue Dogs(or donors close to them) and is now positioning himself to recruit other wobbly democrats.

Thank god Obama didn't pick Bayh as veep.

user-pic
They've officially leaked over into the next chamber.

I'm sure josephcast's avatar would remind you that it's better to be on the outside pissing in than...

I passed by this article. It's a bunch of mush but that's how I see things. PE Obama will be one of our greatest Presidents ever.

user-pic

Thanks for pointing that out i never heard about this part "more than twenty years ago, while standing in the check-in line at an airport, Obama paid a $100 baggage surcharge for a stranger who was broke and stuck. (Obama was virtually penniless himself in those days.) Years later after he became a senator, that stranger recognized Obama's picture and wrote to him to thank him. She received a kindly note back from the senator. (The story only surfaced because the person, who lives in Norway, told a local newspaper after Obama ran for the presidency. The paper published a photograph of this lady proudly displaying Senator Obama's letter.)"

user-pic

Regarding Holder, Obama needs to find somebody that the GOP will hate more that they couldn't reject on any reasonable grounds and have that name "leaked" as his Plan B for AG.

I don't know the HUD nomination from Adam, however Obama better make sure he has two more Latino Americans in his Cabinet or he's risking a huge backlash that will be felt in future elections, and could open the door for the GOP to make in-roads. There is still a half dozen spots still to be filled in his cabinet though the favorites seem to be fading for spots they were once favored for - Grijalva, Carrion and Becerra.

user-pic
... find somebody that the GOP will hate more...

James Carville?

user-pic
... that they couldn't reject on any reasonable grounds...

Ah.  I see your point.  Henry Waxman?

user-pic

Let Kucinich choose.

user-pic

Nah.  Kucinich for Treasury.  He'll refinance our national debt by getting aliens to buy Treasury Bonds.

user-pic

I agree. And he'd better find a couple of one-legged, fire-eating Samoans, too. Or that will really piss the off and give the Republican an opening.

Latinos are too stupid to actually vote on the issues like good wages, healthcare, education and housing. If Obama doesn't meet the requisite number of Latinos in his administration, they'll rush to the Republicans, even though they spent their entire primary trying to out-do each other in terms of Mexican and immigrant bashing.

user-pic

I think you are very wrong about a backlash. Obama needs to focus on quality and fulfilling his promises. As for the HUD nominee, I live in NYC and the amount of affordable housing all over the five boroughs has been a god send to many minorities and low-income families. We can thank the HUD nominee, Bloomberg and others for that.

user-pic

Jonze, even for you, isn't it too early to worry about 2012 ? How did 2008 turn-out for you what with your dire predictions if Obama didn't do this or Obama did that ?

user-pic

One thing Jonze is great at is concern trolling and worrying. Makes him great though.

user-pic

I agree that Obama needs to appoint more Latinos to Cabinet posts than he has.

If Obama gets a Supreme Court pick, he should consider appointing a Latino to the Supreme Court.

user-pic

Open question:  On Monday, my employer will be hosting WaPo's chief exec Jim Brady.  After a talk, employees usually get to ask questions.

Any suggestions for a good question or two to ask him?

user-pic

Why are they spending so much on high paid prognosticators, rather than building up their press corps?

user-pic

Carrion to head the new White House office of Urban Policy.

http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/1208/Report_Carrion_to_head_urban_office.html#comments

user-pic

Hey, if you can make it here......

user-pic
user-pic

That and Beccera should acquiesce those hispanics Jonze was worrying so much about.

user-pic

I hope Obama goes to Church on Sunday so the asshats at Politico don't have anything to do tomorrow.

user-pic

Frank Rich excels as usual.

Yet those who promoted and condoned the twin national catastrophes of reckless war in Iraq and reckless gambling in our markets have largely escaped the accountability that now seems to await the Chicago punk nabbed by the United States attorney, Patrick Fitzgerald.

What would be a good mix and one that would please everyone? Is it possible?
