Election Central Morning Roundup

Obama Holding Presser, Will Announce Key Financial Appointments
Barack Obama is holding a 10:45 a.m. ET press conference in Chicago, where he is expected to announce the appointment of financial regulator Mary Schapiro to head up the Securities and Exchange Commission, and Georgetown law professor Daniel Tarullo for a vacant seat on the Federal Reserve Board.

Report: Obama's Announcement For LaHood To Come Friday
Barack Obama will reportedly wait until Friday to announce that he has picked retiring GOP Congressman Ray LaHood of Illinois to be his Secretary of Transportation. This would make sense thematically, as today's other appointments are strictly focused on the financial crisis.

Today: More Ballot-Counting In Minnesota
The Minnesota canvassing board is meeting today to sort through ballot challenges by the Coleman campaign, in a process that now seems certain to go well beyond their original goal of finishing by Friday. The board will also be considering a complaint by the Coleman camp: That due to human error, as many as 150 absentee ballots may have been counted twice -- but we can't know which ones without serious investigation.

Minnesota Supremes Could Rule On Coleman Suit To Stop Vote Count
The Minnesota Supreme Court could be handing down an opinion today on a Coleman campaign lawsuit to stop the review and counting of absentee ballots that appear to have been rejected because of clerical errors. Those ballots are expected to break to Al Franken for a variety of reasons, so a ruling in favor of Coleman could pull him out of the fire for now -- but a ruling against him would probably seal the deal for Franken.

Blagojevich's Attorney Confirms Blago Won't Pick A Senator
At a late news conference yesterday, Rod Blagojevich's lawyer Ed Genson confirmed that Blago will not attempt to appoint a Senator. "Harry Reid said that they're not going to accept anybody he picks," said Genson. "Why would he [Blagojevich] do that?"

Rahm To Stay Out Of Local Battle For His House Seat
The Chicago Sun-Times reports Rahm Emanuel is unlikely to intervene in the local fight among Democrats for his House seat, in the wake of the controversies surrounding Barack Obama's Senate seat. It's probably a good move.

Newspaper Readers Help Tuskeegee Airman Attend Inauguration
Quentin Smith, a 90-year old Tuskeegee Airman and retired principal from Gary, Indiana, will now be able to attend the inauguration of Barack Obama. When newspaper readers read about his problem -- the inaugural committee has given the surviving Airmen invitations, but Smith couldn't make it due to the very high costs of lodging -- people ranging from old students to a hotel executive all chipped in for him to go.

Eric, kudos to you for staying on top of the Coleman/Franken events in MN and keeping us informed about those confusing challenged ballots. Also noticed your comments over at TheUptake.org (unless there's another Eric Kleefeld somewhere).

Agreed, though I know people are bitching about the ongoing Franken saga.

It has been confusing and Eric and Greg have done a great job of trying to keep it straight.

I just hope comments is working...

Geez, Tena, maybe it's your computer.

user-pic

Or your server. Not being an IT genius, the only thing I can ask is have you tried restarting? My laptop operates on three different networks (two at work and one at home) and every once in a while it gets confused and starts acting like a crazy thing so I give it a time out. Usually works like a charm after that.

Well, they aren't. Comments is still double posting for me.

*sigh*

I swear to god I am not doing it.

I'm not having problems with double posts, but it's taking FOREVER to post anything. It's just like the good old days...

I just saw Recount a few days ago. The stopping of the vote count by the courts is eerily similar.

Regarding Shapiro. I googled her (doesn't that sound naughty?) for a couple hours last night. She seems like a pretty clean cut, respectable person. Not sure if she has a lot of foresight to prevent possible problems but she sounds like someone who sticks to the rules and follows them lawfully and is admired by both sides of the house.

OT: I listened to a Mathew Alexander interview this morning on a local DC radio station, DC101, regarding his book, How to Break a Terrorist. This guy needs to be hired on by the Obama team. Oh and he also should be interviewed by TMP. He does a good job of breaking down how our torture techniques have been one of the biggest recruiting tools and is possible for more military deaths than anything else. It was riveting and frustrating at the same time. Especially since our VP of death just came out recently to say he was the guy that got this stuff approved.

Lastly, please stop double posting Tena. We all know you're doing it on purpose now! ;)

I have no idea what is going on in the Mn Senate race. It seems like it is up in the air.

user-pic

It is up in the air, so that's not an inaccurate impression. They're going through an orderly and well-defined verification process because the vote was close enough that all these little things matter. We can make educated guesses about who's likely to win based on the kinds of challenges and legal actions, but that's it. We're not going to know for sure until they're done.

I think Eric has done a fine job of keeping us posted on the process (and the various educated guesses about the outcome.) Too many outlets are trying to portray it as "crazy" or chaotic, or just whine about "why aren't they done yet?" This is a symptom of our media's demand for speed over accuracy, and they're wrong. Determining the real result is the basis of democracy, and taking the time to do it right is admirable.

user-pic

It is worth noting the real reason Blago is not nominating anybody to the Senate seat--doing so would add another count to the indictment, whoever is actually nominated.

user-pic

How so? I'm missing something. . .

user-pic

Ok, how come there is no post on the incredible lies being made by the king over the last couple of days and the admission to war crimes by darth vader. Levin was on Maddow last night and is in favor of a commission to investigate the war crimes associated with torture and for indictments to be handed down. Seems like some major headlines and post material. Nothing at all. Seems strange to me. All we get is the same drama about the stand-up comedian.

Darlin, this is Election Central.

The stories you are interested in are more likely to show up on TPM Muckraker.

I know, but nothing on the front page or muckraker either. Seems like big stuff, why zippo?

user-pic

Fix the economy first. Get people working, staying in their homes, get the wheels turning again if you will, and then maybe we can talk commissions and trials.

user-pic

Fix the economy first. WTF????!!!!

Fix Tena's comment button or we'll be hearing from her in quadruplicate soon.

user-pic

Is it just me? I found that story about the Tuskeegee Airman just so moving.

It's little things like this that remind me of how historic this is and how many people thought they'd never see the day.

user-pic

Agreed. Stories like the Tuskeegee Airmen remind us just how recently things were entirely different in this country. And even though I am white, I am deeply moved by the extraordinary human triumph of the moment. I am SO proud of our nation. I know we still have a lot of work to do, but there is no denying the historic nature of the moment. How many African Americans (heck, all Americans!) alive right now never thought they would witness this moment?
