Election Central Morning Roundup

Obama Thanking Illinois Donors; No Biden Events
Barack and Michelle Obama are holding a thank-you event for members of his Illinois finance committee, with pooled press. Joe Biden is holding private meetings in Delaware, and has no public events scheduled.

Report: Political Advisers Telling Matthews To Quit MSNBC
The Politico reports that Chris Matthews has been meeting with political operatives to discuss a timetable for his possible Senate candidacy -- and they're advising him to quit MSNBC and get organized ahead of his contract's expiration in June. "I said, 'if you want to be a U.S. senator, step up and get into the race,'" said one participant.

WaPo: Richardson Pick At Commerce A Big Change
The Washington Post points out that the appointment of Bill Richardson as Secretary of Commerce is a real departure for that office, putting a politician in a post that has usually been held by private-sector executives. Commerce has been considered one of the lesser roles -- but that could be changing, between Richardson's own background as a governor and diplomat, and the need for more national leadership on the economy.

Plouffe Writing Book About Campaign
Barack Obama's campaign manager David Plouffe is writing a book about his experience in this past election. Plouffe is indicating that this won't be a tell-all, but more an examination of the process itself, comparing how the rival campaigns were run: "Hopefully, there will be some lessons on how to put together a three-quarters of a billion dollar operation."

Carter Writes New Book -- With Pleasant Title
Jimmy Carter has a new book coming out about the Middle East, entitled We Can Bring Peace To The Holy Land. Hopefully it will go over better than his last book, Palestine: Peace, Not Apartheid.

Potential Reid Challenger Indicted
Harry Reid just got a piece of good news back home in Nevada: One his top potential challengers for 2010, Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki, has been indicted on corruption charges. Between scandal-plagued Gov. Jim Gibbons and now Krolicki, plus Barack Obama's double-digit win here last month, the Republican brand just keeps going downhill in Nevada.

Inauguration Organizers Working To Keep Kids Out
The committee organizing Barack Obama's inauguration is providing some strong disincentives against bringing children, banning strollers and expressly warning that attendees will have to stand in one place for hours. Said a spokeswoman for the committee: "They are shorter than everyone else; they can be stepped on. Parents should think long and hard about bringing a small kid to an event with 1 million people."

Oprah Taping Show In DC For Inauguration Week
Oprah Winfrey, whose public support of Barack Obama quite arguably made the difference in the very close Democratic nomination contest, will be hosting her show from Washington during Inauguration Week. Could a White House Christmas special be next?

There was a thing on NPR this morning about who Obama is going to install as DCI and DNI. Does anyone know what ever happened to Bobby Inman? I was a civilian contractor jobbed out to NSA when he was director and he made it possible for me to even have the career I have. Inman's deputy was gay and encouraged Inman to spearhead the policy change that allowed openly homosexual contractors and government employees to get and hold high level security clearances. I remember that there was a huge kerfuffle involving Inman and Dole but do you suppose he'd consider a position as DNI. Do you think he'd survive the vetting? Of course he'd be yet another Clinton refugee...

user-pic

Now that's an interesting history! I have to admit, I shudder even at the typing of the letters "NSA" (my only interaction with the agency was back when I was in the Army and someone leaked classified info to me over an open phone line; when I reported the leak I was the one who got investigated!)anyone who ran it like that deserves a serious look for the position.

Anyone know who replaces Richardson as governor in New Mexico?

user-pic

Lt. Gov. A woman and a shoe in to win the 2010 election.

user-pic

Sad thing is that the wikipedia entry is practically a stub. Eric asked me last week about Denish and I didn't reply because I know very little. Strange, and she's been practically running the state for over a year!

user-pic

Good news for Harry Reid is welcome, of course, since I wouldn't want a Republican taking his place. But I sure can't say I'm happy with his leadership in the Senate. And at his age, I doubt if he's going to grow a pair now.

user-pic

I'd be all for a primary challenge to Reid. He needs to be reminded that he's there to serve the people, not cronies like Traitor Joe.

user-pic

I'm sure the same people who drag their very small children to inappropriate movies at 11:00 pm on a Saturday night will heed the warnings of the inaugural committee.

user-pic

I'm bringing my kids. I already got the spot that I am going to. It's perfect. I get to see the swearing in and have a front row seat for the parade. History only happens like this once in a hundred years and my kids are not going to miss it!

user-pic

By the way, I don't even let my daughter watch hanna montana. I think that show is completely inappropriate and quite frankly trash. So, I guess I don't fit the 11 p.m. on a saturday night type of parent, but I'm still taking my kids to the inauguration! My kids run around the house chanting obama all the time when they see him on TV. How could I deny them the opportunity?

user-pic

Well, I don't know how hold your children are or the situation...but as the mother of 23 month old twins (and a 7 year old daughter), I know that there are plenty of places that would be inappropriate for them to be (both for their sake and the sake of others). My 7 year old MIGHT do okay (depending on the weather, the bathroom situation, food, etc.)....the twins, not so much.

user-pic

Yep, 23 months would be tough and off the table for me as well. My daughter is 8 and my son is 3 1/2. I've been on the fence about my son, but I'm bringing him. Now, I would never put them in the middle of the crowds on the mall. That would be unacceptable. Like I said I have a great spot that I go to. It's really not that crowded because it's along pennsylvania avenue. I wouldn't go to the mall myself and without my children.

user-pic

Either way - kids or no kids - how awesome that you get to go!

user-pic

Yep, it is awesome. I told my daughter we were going more than a year ago if he won and he did. She's looking forward to it. It really is an incredible experience. I went to bush I's and it was unbelievable. I'll never forget it. I want my daughter to be able to experience it and my son to be able to say he was there when he is old and gray. It truly is witnessing history.

user-pic

You must be a Really Big Donor to have a "front row seat." Either that or you're planning to get out there @ 3 a.m to be "right at the front for the parade." [And I doubt that security will be opening that early to allow access.]

I hope you're not thinking that prior strolls down Pennsylvania Avenue -- without incredible security and one million people -- offer you a glimpse of what Inauguration Day will be like.

Okay for you to wait in the cold with nothing to drink, eat, amuse. Not so good for kids, no matter how "great an experience" you think you're creating.

I urge you to get real.

user-pic

I went to bush I's inauguration and know the drill.

user-pic

Security procedures might have changed a bit since 1988.

user-pic

What about when your 8 year old daughter needs to use the rest room? Think carefully about this kind of thing. There are reasons they've issued a warning.

user-pic

I've done Inauguration Day outdoors in Washington. It was 1973, and my parents took us to the anti-Vietnam protest. I was 13 and started out delighted to be there and fascinated by the people. But the real memories are of being very cold even when marching, of waiting forever to find a bathroom, and of how my feet hurt when we stood still on the frozen ground for what I remember as forever (but might have only been 45 minutes).

From a child's perspective, the event is going to last forever, and at best, will come with a two minute glimpse of the President-elect.

From a parent's perspective, those two minutes and the exhilaration of the crowd will be broken by endless rounds of the things kids do when bored and cold: requests for food, drink, toys, restrooms, and piggy-back rides, fights with siblings, runny noses, tears, untied shoes, lost mittens, complaints, and pleading to go home.

I vote for a party at home in front of the television. They'll see the actual event and so will you, and they'll be paying attention to your emotions and remember for life.

user-pic

I was thinking I'd love to go to see it live, but I realized I'd end up bugging my wife with requests for food, drink, toys, restrooms, and piggy-back rides, fights with bystanders, runny noses, tears, untied shoes, lost mittens, complaints, and pleading to go find a bar.

user-pic

Yeah...the voice of experience huh.

user-pic

I totally agree.

user-pic

Sec. of Commerce, not a political operative appointment? Someone has a short memory. Ron Brown was Clinton's Sec. of Commerce until his untimely death. And his political skills and contacts served him and the country well in putting the economy front and center.

user-pic

can we please stop with the "if not for oprah, the primary would have turned out differently" = reason #10,000 why hillary lost the nomination silliness. did oprah help obama? yeah probably, but seriously, she didn't "make the difference" in the 'incredibly awfully close primary that hillary almost won, & only lost because of reasons having nothing to do with her crappy campaign,' blah blah blah. oprah might sorta rule the world, but the notion of her as king maker that "made the difference" is a bit much; while we're at it lets say she won the general election for him too by not having sarah palin on her show, you know because it would have made her idiocy lovable rather than frightening.

user-pic

Should Mathews quit TV already? Franken quit Air America in late January 2007, and I'm not at all sure the extra time helped. Other candidates got in early too, but I think Franken forced their hand. We had four candidates already at a local party fundraiser in February 2007. Maybe the extra time to organize helped, but I also suspect it gave the Republicans more time to attack him and test attacks for when more voters were paying attention. Also, Franken raised a lot of money, but the long campaign meant he had to spend it too.

I'm highly skeptical of the value of our lengthy campaign seasons.

NOT MENTIONED: It comes down to the have and the haves not as usual but when it comes to this "bailout" circus no one mentions that the banks have been robbed. The robbers (barons) demand that taxpayers replace the money in the banks while those who profiteered keep their profits.

The bail out is really about protecting the holdings of the wealthy who would rather watch the country go into a great depression than return one cent.

The country is easily fixed by rolling back the Reagan tax cuts immediately, and confiscating the holdings of all those involved in the Wall street collapse, including the return of all CEO bonuses and options. Watch how quickly the whole situation is resolved.

Next, Buy out the big three auto makers and use them to start manufacturing mass transportation and energy efficient autos, batteries, windmills etc as a collective effort to deal with global warming and energy needs.

It's time to start regulating greed with taxes and tariffs, to become energy independent and self sufficient in this Utopia called the US of A.

Face it, democratic socialism is the only way to ensure the survival of the Human Race and sooner or later humanity must deal with this reality.

Right now what we are really dealing with is the means for the wealthy to protect their holdings by taking tax payer dollars as extortion or they will just let the economy collapse. The end of this tactic is a Fascist Corporatocracy where the working class is changed to the Peasantry. We've been getting robbed for 30 years as the wealthy class dismantles the New Deal.
