"Dollar Bill" Jefferson (D-LA) Loses Re-Election
Rep. "Dollar Bill" Jefferson (D-LA) has lost his seat in tonight's Louisiana elections to Republican candidate Joseph Cao, giving the Dems their own case of Ted Stevens Syndrome -- that is, a safe and well-entrenched incumbent, who holds a seat that ought to be an easy win for his party, going down to defeat on a corruption scandal.
Jefferson, of course, is the New Orleans Congressman who is currently under a multi-count federal indictment on corruption charges, in a bizarre case that involved, among other things, $90,000 in cash being found in his freezer back in 2006. That scandal wasn't enough for him to lose re-election in 2006, but the indictment that has come down since then appears to have done it.
This is a solidly-Democratic, majority-black district, so the idea of any Republican getting elected here is a real shocker, even under these circumstances. As such, look for the Dems to put up a strong candidate in 2010 -- maybe one who isn't under indictment -- and make this seat their top pick-up target.
Late Update: With 100% of precincts reporting, Cao has defeated Jefferson by a 50%-47% margin, with a little bit under 65,000 total votes cast.

The guy who won must have kidnapped or killed someone. No?
Bcoz Louisianians are known to pick the worst among the all-worst line up on the ballot.

I kind of disagree. Seems to me that it's better to have a Republican in there who doesn't truly represent his predominantly Democratic district than a guy who should be in jail. I can't believe he was even allowed to go up for re-election, the freaking idiot.

I was kinda half kiddin. I don't know much about Louisiana politics to be honest and certainly not at district level. Nevertheless, the LA politicians who make national news always happen to be scumbags.

Unfortunately, you are right on that last point. I saw a documentary or something on Louisiana politicians a few years back that went through years of, um, occurrences. Sad.

I live in Bill Jefferson's district, and the key to Joseph Cao's victory was low voter turnout. This is the third time voters here have gone to the polls in two months, and it is now after the excitement of Nov. 4th. Jefferson's people weren't enthusiastic enough about him to show up in sufficient numbers, but Cao's people were on the ball and knew they had to work hard to get this win. And they did. And though I have never voted for a Republican before, I'm glad Cao got this victory tonight. It's good for New Orleans, and it obviously doesn't hurt the Democratic Party, given our sizable majority in the House.

Good view from the inside. I guess it's hard to get excited for a guy who stashes thousands of dollars in his freezer. If he'd shared the wealth, then maybe they would have gotten out of bed!

congrats to Ahn Cao.
I think the Dems can take as much pride in keeping this one close as the Reps can take from keeping Stevens close in AK.

This makes liars out of all those people who think that african americans only vote for other african americans. Those folks will no doubt find some caveat or fairytale to explain it away so that they can stay in their mental rut.

Eric, your third paragraph has an ugly racial slant that I don't like - "even under these circumstances." The teaser on the home page has it too. And you caught me on a bad night, so here goes.
In other words, you are pointing out that Jefferson is corrupt, but since he's black and lives in a black district, he should've won anyway, and even though he's a criminal it "shocks" you, because, you know, he's black, and black people should just vote for black people
Is that what you were thinking?
Commentary, as well as education about race, is a learning process.

Your complaint would have more weight if his district hadn't re-elected him in 2006 when his corruption was already evident.
Also, you could just as easily read Eric as saying that black people vote for Democrats instead of saying they vote for other black people.

I see your point, however, look at it again in the mirror.
Framing this scenario in a southern state, what if the district was almost all white, the incumbent was white and challenger was black and the incumbent was under the same political/legal duress. Do you think those white voters would still elect the incumbent simply because he was white and disregard his transgressions? I think the answer would be yes they would. So it is a shocker to see a black community step up to the plate and make the sacrificial political play. That's a lesson in intestinal fortitude we all could use.
I'm always looking in from the outside so I tend to see things from a different point of view.

The Dems could of easily retained LA-02(District), but Nancy Pelosi and the other house democrats were to chicken to force Bill Jefferson to step down.

Jefferson should have been ousted a long time ago. The man had $90,000 in his freezer. That alone tells you something.

Actually, I expect many among us might be keeping wads of cash in our freezers, mattreses, etc., these days. Sure beats investing in the Dow index or real estate, eh?
That being said, as a Democrat I'm glad to see this guy finally go. I know little about his opponent, but even a conservative Republican should be given the benefit of the doubt over a corrupt pol in my estimation.

No tears here... the s.o.b. is from the past... and considering it is LA... what can one expect? In fact, his defeat is a gain for progressives and further marginalizes the racist south from the majority of the country... There is much to be gained from isolating the hate-filled south from the rest of the country. White trailer trash will have to come to terms with voting for Repubs who have never been interested in their needs only in their anti-black, anti-woman, anti-gay biases... It's a new day in Washington, D.C., and there's no future for trailer trash bigots, aka, Reagan Republicans. Have to say I'm enjoying watching this. After 30 years of the ignorant controlling the country, finally the intelligent have taken control. It's 1932 all over again.

When one looks back at the repug$ Taking Back America meme from 1994 it's easy to see it was more like than it was to make Government work and serve the people - it was all for personal profit and gain. I do hope the current Democrats in both House and Senate are ready to put the train back on the tracks and kick off any hobos they find trying to hitch a free ride on the people's tax dollar.

I don't live in Bill Jefferson's district, but I do live in the N.O. Metro area. I'm not normally for the Republican, but in this case I was.
Also keep in mind, that Louisiana now has the first Vietnamese congressman and an Indian governor. Many may consider us a backwater, but we're miles ahead when it comes to diversity.

Look on the bright side.
If a felon like this can keep it THIS CLOSE against a spotless Republican, things cannot be going well for the GOP.
INdicted criminals tend to lose elections. After all, precisely the same set of circumstances (with the candidate ACTUALLY BEING CONVICTED) just played out in REVERSE in Alaska.
Why would anyone expect it to be different in LA?

Good riddance to Jefferson.
We netroots railed against the GOP in 2005 & 2006 for their corrupt Congress people so we should do the same for the Dems. I say get rid of THE STINK whether it is a Democrat or a Republican from the House and Senate. Jeffereson definitely was one of the stinkiest.
I am glad he is gone.

Word.
I am not interested in politicians like Jefferson being Democrats. I want a clean party with people who realize that they are being elected to work, not to steal money or time or chase women, go on junkets and be in hot tubs with lobbyists.

Barack Obama is the President of the United States of America. George Bush is in epoch all over the world. These people like Condeleeza Rice, Barbara Bush, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumself, Karl Rove, and all the racist masons are getting kicked around enough that you really don't know what you'll get pulled into the gas chamber trial for all those skull and bones type deaths, sigma epsilon deaths, and and PIKE retards. On the other hand, if you're greek why go greek and sift around through something. The crips slipped, and I can't see one person in the USA not getting crunked in an Indiana prison chamber. So much sensual seduction from jews that can't near a dick if they're life depended on it.

The second article (in a row) which isn't even interested in so much as *asking* whether the de-black-ification of NO had any effect. (The AP's was the first I saw: http://www.usatoday.com/news/topstories/2008-12...)
A priori, I don't see why a 3 point loss can't be *partially* explained by the 12 point demographic swing away from black folks and toward white folks in NO, whose population was halved. (Source: http://www.wwltv.com/topstories/stories/wwl0806...)
Of course, Jefferson being a scumbag would *also* be part of the reason (and almost certainly larger in effect). I just don't see the justification for the implicit suggestion that Jefferson's being a scumbag was the ONLY significant reason for his loss.

I also with the national party had found the means -- or the intestinal fortitude -- to keep Jefferson from running again this time.
But did you notice: Congressman-elect Cao is not only a Republican, he's also a community organizer! Makes me wonder if the local Republican establishment didn't pay much attention to the 'sacrificial' candidate that was willing to run against Jefferson, and may have gotten something different than the national party expected.
It's hard to imagine, after all, that a self-made Vietnamese-American Congressman is going to buy into the 'Southern strategy' and a lot of other Republican memes, even if he is very conservative and very loyal. There's been a lot of racism directed at Vietnamese Americans, along with African Americans, on the Gulf Coast, after all.
So let's congratulate the Congressman-elect, and hope that he's a serious, responsible and worthy representative of his district who feels little obligation to play along with Republican extremism and obstructionism!

The guy who brazenly takes bribes in the open and keep them in his House office fridge is a closet Republican by definition, even if he is a Democrat. So I say no actual party change has taken place.

Good riddance to bad rubbish. No matter what party you support, there should be no room in Congress for crooks of the ilk of Jefferson.
We Democrats seem to have a lot fewer out and out criminals elected to office, but why should we tolerate any? Why isn't the party leadership forcing Rep. Rangel to step down from his chairmanship until (or if) he clears his name?
