Candidate For RNC Chair Sends Out CD With Song Called "Barack, The Magic Negro"

If one of the Republican Party's challenges is how to effectively oppose the first black president without coming off as racist, one of the candidates for RNC chair is hardly off to a good start -- he is now distributing a CD that includes a racially-charged song called "Barack, The Magic Negro."

Chip Saltsman, the former campaign manager for Mike Huckabee, has distributed a goodie bag to committee members that includes a CD by Paul Shanklin, a writer of right-wing parody tunes who is often featured on Rush Limbaugh. The "Magic Negro" track, which first gathered controversy in the Spring of 2007, featured Shanklin portraying Al Sharpton as an Amos & Andy stereotype, ridiculing white liberals who support Obama.

Saltsman defended the choice of the Shanklin CD, telling The Hill: "Paul Shanklin is a long-time friend, and I think that RNC members have the good humor and good sense to recognize that his songs for the Rush Limbaugh show are light-hearted political parodies."

I don't know which is lower: the level of humor in "light-hearted political parodies" of the right-wing, or the political sensitivity of the RNC to racial matters.

It is amazing that any thinking person could be this dense. To demean our elected President must be very high on Republican's lists at this time of both international and economy issues shows that the Grand Old Party has lost its sense of good citizenship. What a sad day for Republicans. I trust the GOP, although totally off course so much they lost me, will reflect this sort of obvious racism. It is just inappropriate for anyone at this time to make racial divides more obvious.

user-pic

I actually don't think Obama would have a problem doing that. He did, after all, pick Clinton to be his, SOS, and she did and said some racially-charged things during the primaries.

user-pic

He did, after all, pick Clinton to be his, SOS, and she did and said some racially-charged things during the primaries

Bullshit. Hillary said things that were taken out of context and interpreted as racially charged. Just as Obama said a lot of things that were interpreted as sexist.

To even mention Hillary in the same context as what this Repuglican clown did is ridiculous. People are always telling me to let it go. Why can't you people let it go? Your guy won.

Oops, wait a second. I said "you people." Banish me to the RNC. I must be a racist too.

user-pic

It wasn't Hillary herself so much as others on her campaign. Bill Clinton, Geraldine Ferraro most notably. Hillary did say she was the candidate of "hard working, white people"

user-pic

Wrong again. Hillary said no such thing. She cited an AP poll which indeed found "an overwhelming preference for Clinton over Obama among working-class whites." (Source: AP http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2008/05/04/obamas_appeal_to_working_class_whites_faltering_polls_show/ )

AP did the poll; AP reported the results; it was encouraging news to Clinton; and then she was pilloried for citing the news report. Why is it wrong for her to state the truth?

user-pic

IT IS BULLSHIT. Clintons and both of them have fought for equal rights their entire lives.

Rights for Blacks and other minorities and for women.

user-pic

It is a fact that Hillary & her campaign played to racism. Early on in the primaries I was thinking of voting for her, but when I saw them going down that disgusting path I wrote them off. What they did in the primaries negated everything they did previously. It cheapened it, made it all suspect.

user-pic

Codswallop.

user-pic

Oh, Jesus. Here we go.

user-pic

Perhaps the topic may have been in bad taste but demeaning the elected President? Hardly. He is not President of the United States as he has yet to release the vault birth certificate proving he is a "natural born citizen" as required by the Constitution. The computer generated one on his web is a fraud, proved so.

Until all questions of his RIGHT to be President are resolved, he is not and will not be President other than perhaps in the role of a usurper. My hope is that he will do the right thing so he will not be personally responsible for another civil war. Oh, yah, perhaps that is why 20,000 US troops are being deployed on US soil? Does he not know they are sworn to defend the Constitution against all enemies both foreign AND domestic?

Imagine that, the first half black president to be the cause of the demise of our country.

And by the way with all this acrimony from the mentally ill left, why no hue and cry of outrage when the reverse Reverend Jesse Jackson stated on national news that he wanted to cut Obama's nuts off? hummmm?

Yes, I have come to believe that liberalism is a mental illness. God save us from madness.

user-pic

Sorry, have no idea my comment was posted 2x. Meant to post only once......

user-pic

What an idiot. I know, I am supposed to write something rational instead of just calling names, but I have done that so many times and the idiots just keep on blathering. There just aren't enough words.

user-pic

Good Grief, man. Even FreeRepublic has dropped the birth-certificate nonsense, and now I have to read it here on TPM! It's annoying to observe such foolishness, but it's better than having bush in charge. If this is the best the "loyal opposition" can muster, Obama will have smooth sailing.

user-pic

It amazes me that there are liberals who accuse and ridicule before they know what is going on. Or perhaps liberals do and the tactic is just to accuse and ridicule. Even Hitler said if you tell a lie loud enough and long enough the people will believe it as truth. In the present case the poster who I am replying to would have people believe that the birth certificate issue is over. Maybe the poster is lying or just sub-intelligent, or as renowned psychiatrist Dr. Lyle Rossiter, in his book "The Liberal Mind" has stated that "liberalism is a mental illness. "Like spoiled, angry children, they rebel against the normal responsibilities of adulthood and demand that a parental government meet their needs from cradle to grave."

Anyway, to correct this poor misguided poster, the COLB is far from over:
A second conference has been posted on the docket for the U.S. Supreme Court over the issue of Barack Obama's eligibility to occupy the White House, this one scheduled a week after Congress is to review the Electoral College vote tabulation.

The latest issue posted is a request for an injunction on the election results pending the resolution of a petition for a writ of certiorari filed by attorney Philip J. Berg, a case that is docketed for a similar conference among the justices on Jan. 9.

user-pic

Researcher, you really should learn the meaning of words before you use them in your micro-cephalic tirades. Dr. Lassiter is "renowned"? I'd suggest that you don't know the meaning of the word renowned.
In actuality, the most recent research indicates that the conservative/repugnicant mind is one based on reactionary fear, which leads them helplessly towards obsession with whatever 'scary' issue their talk radio daddies shout and wail about.
Barack Hussein Obama will become president of my United States, and if you don't like it, perhaps you could move to Iraq, I hear they have a budding democracy there.
Imbecile.

user-pic

"In actuality, the most recent research indicates that the conservative/repugnicant mind"

I think you were tying to find and use the word repugnant.

I know, it is difficult.

user-pic

Actually Lenin said 'A lie told often enough, becomes the truth'. Your research, senor researcher is suspect. And if you're gonna quote Rossiter as a credible source, your research is more dross. Oh.. and you and Rossiter can call liberals spoiled and angry children, but let me just say that sticks and stones may break my bones (but words will never hurt me), and you are an idiot.

user-pic

Then please refer to an idiots source material: It is often attributed to Hitler as Joseph Goebbels was in direct control of Hitler.

"If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”

Joseph Goebbels was an extremely intelligent man, a brilliant manipulator, and was Hitler's Master of Propaganda. Goebbels's deeply rooted contempt for humanity, his urge to sow confusion, hatred and intoxication, his lust for power and his mastery of the techniques of mass persuasion were given full vent in the election campaigns of 1932, when he played a crucial role in bringing Hitler to the centre of the political stage. He was rewarded on 13 March 1933 with the position of Reich Minister for Public Enlightenment and Propaganda, which gave him total control of the communications media - i.e. radio, press, publishing, cinema and the other arts. (My note: today we would call that the fairness doctrine), He retained this position for his lifetime. He was Hitler's right hand man until their deaths. He chose to suicide himself and poison his wife and 6 kids so as to die with Hitler. With characteristic pathos and egomania he declared not long before his death: 'We shall go down in history as the greatest statesmen of all time, or as the greatest criminals.'

He also said:
“The most brilliant propagandist technique will yield no success unless one fundamental principle is borne in mind constantly - it must confine itself to a few points and repeat them over and over” YES WE CAN, YES WE CAN.

"Whoever can conquer the street will one day conquer the state, for every form of power politics and any dictatorship-run state has its roots in the street.”

“If the day should ever come when we [the Nazis] must go, if some day we are compelled to leave the scene of history, we will slam the door so hard that the universe will shake and mankind will stand back in stupefaction..”

I know it is difficult for you. I understand and sympathize. I had some friends who were Public School educated and while we were studying and parsing Latin they had Catcher in the Rye read to them.

user-pic

Researcher, you need to read a newspaper. When Rev. Jackson made his 'nutty' comments the 'hue and cry of outrage' was all over the liberal media.

user-pic

Never let the truth stand in the way of a good story, especially if the teller of said story appears to be as deranged as Captain Queeg.

Hey, researcher. Here's a clue for your next project: Obama stole the strawberries.

user-pic

Hey, researcher. Here's a clue for your next project: Obama stole the strawberries."

Funny. But as someone who has no extended paternal family at all because they were murdered in Nazi Germany I believe we really need to treat our Constitution with care as it is the only thing protecting us from a corrupt government. SleepinJeezus, you appear to be a thoughtful person. If our Constitution is meaningless and Obama has violated it as it appears he was born in Kenya, and our bought and paid for Congress has flushed it down the toilet by furthering the cause of National Socialism, how long do you think it would be before we see another tyranny? It only took Hitler and his NATIONAL SOCIALISM four years to turn the safest country on earth for Jews, (Germany) into the worlds most efficient murder machine.

user-pic

Never made the mainstream TV news media, the media that the younger generations view. That is where it was first reported, that is where it needed to be blasted; never was.

But the comment was telling about the liberal mind though. If the liberal disagrees with something, just cut off the offenders nuts. I wonder what seminary the Reversed reverend Jessie Jackson attended? First seminary of the damned? Seminary of the sick and twisted? Oh, I know, first seminary of the liberal mind.

user-pic

You're an addle-pated ignorant lout.

Shame on you for your unapologetic and deplorable ignorance and racism. There is a reason freaks like you are marginalized. You're a menace to a free society.

There are some lies that it is evil to defend and believe in as they have been debunked over and over and over again. I have my doubts as to whether you freepers are even American citizens. All you want is anarchy and chaos in America against your very own best interests (a clue as to your utter stupidity), and for decent people to believe that 'everyone' is as moronic and depraved as you and your ilk. That doesn't work.

I'd feel sorry for you if you weren't so arrogant and proud of your own foolishness.

user-pic

"If the liberal disagrees with something, just cut off the offenders nuts." Sounds like Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly, and Rush Limburger rolled into one. And what Bwakfat said X 2.

user-pic

Barack Hussein Obama is an American citizen, because one of his parents is American. Since at least 1790 children born having one American parent are considered as American "as if born on native soil".
Don't let over 200 years of accepted legal doctrine destroy your insane arguments though, otherwise who would we in the reality-based community have to laugh at?
Fool.

user-pic

It is this very ignorance that threatens our great country. No one disagrees that BHO is an American Citizen. The question is have we trashed our Constitution and soon to be a tyranny? Most likely you are a product of the Public Education system. Please refer to the United States Constitution: Article 2 Section 1.

"No person except a NATURAL BORN CITIZEN, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty-five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States."

BHO has spent millions on a legal team avoiding this issue. He has a fake COLB on his site and refuses to release the vault copy. His grandmother is on tape stating BHO was born in Kenya. Until this is cleared up, he is a citizen but like Arnold Schwarzenegger, is not qualified to hold the office of President as Arnold was born in Austria.

Please study before revealing lack of information.

It is this very ranting that supports the belief that liberals are mentally ill and in need of great help.

user-pic
No one disagrees that BHO is an American Citizen.
or a Citizen of the United States

Or for the solidness of skull:

OR A CITIZEN OF THE UNTITED STATES

(got brain?)

user-pic

Perhaps you should examine the legal history of the accepted definition of "natural born citizen" before you go off on another of your pea-brained rants. As I said already, and despite your willful ignorance, children born to one American parent are, and have been (since at least 1790) considered to be "as if born on native soil", which would of course mean that they are natural born citizens.
Feel free to keep a tight grasp on your hope that the courts will preserve America for the white race you bigoted imbecile. The rest of us will have great fun at your expense come inauguration day.
And you'll be nowhere to be found, because you're like all racist repugs; a fool and a coward.

==
I am sorry that you do not have an accurate history of our country at hand. "Natural born citizen" is clear and has been clear. Born on American soil. It is true that BHO is a citizen by virtue of the fact that his mother was a citizen but if he refuses to produce the vault copy of his birth certificate then by our Constitution he is not qualified to be President.

But the further question for free thinkers such as myself is why he would spend millions trying to burry this issue? If it is a non issue then why not just produce the vault copy and be done with it? Why computer generate a phony on his web site?
If it is so important to hide then maybe he is well aware that he is not qualified to be President. Now I know a number of people posting here hate conservatives, but I would ask you even beyond your hatred, do you still believe our country meaning our Constitution is still worth defending and obeying? If you do then we all agree on this one thing and BHO should prove he was not born in Kenya as his Grandmother has attested to on tape. If our country meaning Constitution is not important to some of you then we will be at odds permanently with the only question being how far will that go? Civil war? I know my military buds are concerned about this as they/we are/were sworn to defend our Constitution from all enemies foreign AND domestic. So again I say, the best thing that BHO can do to prevent a possible demise of this country as we know it is to prove he is a natural born citizen or step down.

What's sad is that this is the opinion that dominates the Republic Party today. It's the reason why Sarah Palin is shown as a leading candidate for the 2012 nomination, and it's the reason why they don't have any leaders the country would describe as strong because they pick the ones that they see as most like them. Sad.

user-pic

Why bother to take offense in a cheapened society? Haven't you heard? They're doing a movie version of Amos 'n Andy, updated slightly for 21st century sensibilities. Steve Martin is signed to do Andy, they are undecided on Amos. It's just all in fun, folks.

user-pic

What the Hell? I'm speechless, this is just beyond stupid. I'm not surprised they think this way, I'm surprised they think this is OK for the public to know that they think this way. Aren't the Republicans trying to become a more inclusive party? After garbage like this and the McCain/Palin campaign, why the hell are there still Black Republicans? I told someone the other day that I could not morally stand by the Republican party. They just proved my point again.

user-pic

Maybe Obama should invite them to give the invocation at his inaugural in order to foster a spirit of unity and understanding. LOL.

user-pic

When I first heard this I was sure it was something he had done a long time ago that had just come to light. But it was something he just did this week as part of his campaign Unbelievably stupid.

user-pic

Yea............tell me something suprising?

user-pic

He is a 'shoo-in' for the chair! He embodies the Republican style and culture. No Class.

user-pic

I used to think of the R party as the party of big business, as of late it comes off as the party of dull normals.

user-pic

Paging Sigmund Freud...

user-pic

Wow. This is stunning. Talk about the lack of a moral compass. To think that this would in any way be appropriate is amazing. But I guess it's all OK because "Shanklin is a long-time friend." Indeed, I'm sure a lot of Saltsman's long-time friends are racists. And I'm sure Saltsman is one too.

user-pic

OMG - is this ever disgusting. It's not surprising, but pitiful to see the party of Lincoln turn into the party of unapologetic racists. If he becomes chairman, it'll be clear to everyone who's not a white, evangelical, Southern racist that the GOP is no place for them.

user-pic

Isn't that a touch extreme? From what i can tell, racists from across the country are welcome to join.

user-pic

Point well taken! It's interesting, though, that virtually all of the white candidates for RNC chair are Southern racists.

user-pic

What else is new. Nothing coming from The GOP corner can be good for our country. Why don't they just pack up and leave. Alaska would be a nice place, then they all can be "pallin'" with Palin.

Liars, all of them, including Palin's family

user-pic

With the exception to that regional limit being Sarah Palin.

user-pic

This reminds me of Fuzzy Zoeller after he made his unfortunate remarks about Tiger Woods prospective menu choices for the next Masters champions' dinner. Fuzzy said he'd talked to Tiger and (I think) apologized and in any event it was like some of the towel snapping locker room humour golfers indulge in. Fuzzy opined that Tiger knew they were just joking and didn't take offence. I just bet!

This guy Saltsman is a lot worse than Fuzzy, though. Fuzzy was used to being the media darling and was now being asked for his opinion of the new media darling. He blurted out his original remarks in a fit of pique without stopping to think for a bit. Saltsman put a lot more thought into his fit of stupidity.

user-pic

These clowns better enjoy the political wilderness...

user-pic

Wow, this story is much funnier than Shanklin's "parodies" ever are...Please, please, please God let this guy become RNC chairman.

user-pic

The public is not tolerating stupid very well these days. This moronic act will haunt these guys for a long time.

user-pic

If that's a picture of the guy, he looks like he wouldn't look out of place on one of those old lynching-picnic picture postcards. Holding a torch.

user-pic

I'm always struck by how so many Republicans look like this guy ... I can't describe the look but I know it when I see it. Shaves twice a day, rosy cheeks, Chamber-of-Commerce-Member, ran for high school class president on the we-need-a-dress-code ticket. God I hate these people ...

user-pic

There is definitely some truth in the observation that these people have a certain look---a George Allen/Fox News Anchor heavy hairspray smug smile vacant look.

I hope he makes RNC chair---it will keep the GOP racing towards obsolescence.

user-pic

Seconding you and Weefer. He has that smug, upper-middle-class (for the South, anyway) look that suggests his family was trailer trash until Daddy worked hard enough to take over the local car dealership and get admitted to the country club. High-end crackers like this racist piece of shit turn my stomach.

user-pic

I'm a Black man who used to get upset about things like this. I don't have to anymore because it's clear to me now who has the psychosis.

With Detroit in the toilet, Wallstreet up the creek, California at the brink and with the rest of America in a daze over our Economy, and our place in the world, this is what we need to give to 49% of this country? He should have put a Suzzie Orman savings DVD in that goodie bag to boot.

Please TPM, use your precious web page space on things that will move the country and the rest of the assholes who live here forward!

user-pic

They remain stunningly clueless. It is like somebody's 87 year old grandfather saying "What's the matter with that? I didn't say 'nigger.'"

user-pic

From the linked-to article in The Hill:

Limbaugh presciently predicted his allusion to the [Ehrenstein] column nearly two years ago would win attention from left-leaning organizations that would suggest he was using Obama’s race against him.

Hmmm.  Ya mean Rush predicted that the Angry Left was gonna accuse him of race-baiting?  Wow, that is extraordinarily prescient.

Hey, I know how to guarantee that a police officer will accuse me of running a red light.  Just find a cop watching an intersection and run the red light.

Does that earn me an award for prescience?

user-pic

"Limbaugh PRESCIENTLY predicted his allusion to the column nearly two years ago would win attention from left-leaning organizations that would suggest he was using Obama’s race against him."
--Reid Wilson, The Hill

You gotta wonder about this bimbo at The Hill if he thinks Limbaugh is "presceint" for saying people would call him out for his race baiting statements (which is precisely why the Fat Felon makes those statements in the first place).

user-pic

Wonder what Huckabee has to say about his former campaign manager being so overtly racist.

user-pic

What a difference one election makes! Ever since LBJ signed the omnibus Civil Rights Bill and lost the South, the GOP has been a haven for racists. I don't know what in the hell Michael Steel is thinking. Why would he want to associate with these cretins? Does he really believe that the Republican party can ever appeal to blacks?

And look what's happening in the West with hispanics. Blacks are aligning with Democrats over 90% of the time and hispanics about 70%. Just where is the GOP looking to grow? All we have to do is look at a Palin rally to understand where the heart of the GOP is: the anti-intellectuals, the Muslim bashers, the nigger haters, the Christian reich. Their BASE is truly base.

Yes, before 2008, to win the White House, one had to play up to the South and pretend to share its peculiar cultural views, but not any longer. Its political isolation will only increase. A return to minstrel show comedy shows just how desperate they are.

user-pic

Well said!

user-pic

Let's play pin the quote on the racist:

"Don't the darkies know that we're just dressing up in black-face for a bit of fun? I mean, we don't mean to any offense by it. It's just the way they are."

user-pic

This is the President-Elect we're talking about. If Democrats did something similar to Bush, the RNC would squawk about how awful that was to do to the President(-elect) during a time of war.

user-pic

You're forgetting that it's a war against non-whites with names like "Hussein." It's a totally different game when the presidency itself falls into enemy hands.

user-pic

Could TMP please follow up with Michael Steele who lost the run for Governor in MD. Ask him if he think this will better his chances for the chair of the party who hates black people.

user-pic

Not "black people." "Negros." But Michael Steel is different. He's a well-spoken, clean cut credit to his race.

user-pic

You forgot 'articulate.'

user-pic

Steel must be a glutton for punishment. I don't know what he's thinking. Ken Blackwell is just a crazy asshole.

user-pic

That is how the Republicans expect to grow their party?

VERY Good news for all Democrats!

user-pic

You have noooo idea. It's a nightmare. We sometimes begin to think that America is doomed to "researcher's" self-justifying type of ignorance forever more. It's easy to forget that there are saner parts of this country, even for me--and I spent most of my life in saner parts of America. Nice to see that somebody understands what it's like; there are some of us nearly suffocating down here.

It's too bad 'researcher' has (clearly) never had to justify his 'research' or the results of his 'free-thinking' in an objective forum. There are so many logic and factual errors in his 'reasoning' that it would take too much time nobody has to unravel it. And let's face it. Wouldn't matter anyway. There is no reasoning with people like that and people who you can reason with aren't people like that. It's a closed loop.

It's fascinating though, isn't it, how his last post carried a threat of gang violence? Researcher and "his buddies" in the armed forces shouldn't be too hard to track down, what with expanded spying capabilites now in place? Anybody at the FBI paying attention? Homeland Security? Anybody?

user-pic

"gang violence". Don't be silly.

I was expressing a valid concern that if it is true that Obama has violated the Constitution by not being a "natural born citizen", then National Socialists can not believe that millions of Americans who actually know what the Constitution says would stand by and allow this to happen.

Again, I know you can't help but accuse before you know anything but my personal hope is that IF Obama is qualified to hold the Presidential office that he would quickly provide the vault copy of his COLB so the whole thing can be put to rest. By the way, it sounds as if you were educated at a public school so what COLB means is: Certificate Of Live Birth.

And again, as a freethinker, (something that you mock and would perhaps choose to put me to death as my extended paternal relatives were put to death because they disagreed with the National Socialism of Hitler).

I like to ask questions like why is it that Obama is hiding his COLB? Why computer generate a phony? Why pay millions to attorneys to cover up his past and origin?
Why is it ok for liberals to mock conservatives and yet when conservatives dish it out liberals cry foul? Perhaps you would like to cut my nuts off like the Reversed Reverend Jesse Jackson wanted to cut the nuts off of Obama as he is not a proper African-American, as the Reversed Reverend Al Sharpton had said of Obama.

Just a parting comment as it appears that thoughtful discussions are not possible here. I too hope that the Dept of Homeland Security, the Armed forces, the FBI and the like are keeping tabs on the goings on. You are perhaps not aware that they too are sworn to defend the Constitution of the United States with their lives. So unless all of those folks have become traitors as well the only thing I have to say is:

IF it is true that Obama is not qualified to be President with reference to the Natural Born Citizen requirement,

then, book the traitor danno!

SNL's spoof of NY Gov David Patterson may have pushed the envelope of tastefulness --- but it was certainly not racist. But RNC-head candidate Shanklin's little ditty (to me) is clearly in the demeaning and racist category. The RNC's "Southern Strategy" and Reagan's 1980 Speech in Mississippi to capture the Southern bigot vote is still fresh in our memories. But for Mike Huckabee (a Christian minister) to endorse Shanklin and for Shanklin and/or the RNC to now distribute CD's with the ditty further indicates that the RNC is still supporting a "Southern Strategy" and targeting the Southern white bigot voter. Let them have the bigots! It will further isolate and define the limited scope of the RNC. That will strengthen the DNC's appeal to more rational, centrist political voters.

user-pic

This pales in comparison to the on air comments that Michael Savage made about Obamas mother.

user-pic

The RNC and the Republican Party stand exposed. How can anyone stay in the Republican Party who is not racist?

Granted, there should be another strong political party, perhaps a conservative party, but the Republican Party is the party of the Old South.

One would think that the born again Christians and the fiscal conservatives (if there are any) would want to divorce themselves from racism and leave the Republican Party.

user-pic

No surprise here. This is just typical right wing racial insensitvity and bigotry. Did anyone happen to notice the whiteness of the crowd at the RNC? Personally, I'm quite delighted to see these assholes drag themselves through the mud. Every time they do something like this, it secures their position as the minority party. What a bunch of losers.

user-pic

Do none of y'all know where the term "Magic Negro" came from? Anyone else here read the LA Times?

As I remember it, David Ehrenstien, a liberal columnist, called Obama the Magic Negro, because he was "untouchable" because of his race, and because any criticisms of him would be deemed "racist."

What Limbaugh and Shanklin were doing was pointing out how a liberal could say things like this all day without repurcussion, but as soon as a conservative breathed the word "negro" he was labled a racist.

Idiots.

user-pic

When I read, or hear for that matter, the words y'all and negro, I become worried.

"nice to be back in a dry county again..." Gene Hackman in Mississippi Burning

Did I mention that Joe Biden is a Roman Catholic...

user-pic

Your screenname is "mightywhitey"..?

That makes sense.

user-pic

Is that what Rush told you? You're the idiot. It's one of the classic excuses of a racist: if one of their own people said it, why can't I? - I don't give a damn who said it, it's still stupid, ignorant and insensitive and oh yeah....racist! I never assume that all conservatives are racist and I never assume that all liberals believe all people are equal.

user-pic

Yes indeed.

Rush himself cited the LA Times as his source for the phrase "Barak The Magic Negro" in defending himself from the spurious and laughable charge of racism.

We have, as a nation, lost our ability to think critically. Idiots are in the majority, and feel-good knee-jerk philosophies are dominant.

It is a direct outgrowth from the failure of liberally-controlled public education.

Public education, free speech, and critical thinking are the linchpins that preserve democratic ideals from one generation to the next.

Those linchpins are gone.

user-pic

I read that column, and while Ehrenstien is a black man, a Liberal he is not-rather just the opposite.

But should the Liberal media be faulted for basically ignoring a column written by someone that pretty much nobody knows? I hardly think so. Big difference between some "who are you, anyway" L.A. Times columnist and people like The Most Repugnant Rush Limbaugh and this racist Saltsman who is running for the RNC chairmanship. Nothing wrong with putting your focus on where the largest and most significant exposure is coming from.

user-pic

Oh my Gaaaaaaaaaawwwwd! How STUPID can you repubs really be??? Not only is this showing disrespect to the President Elect Obama but disrespect to all those who voted for him! No wonder the Rebubs have been nicknamed the Rethugs! With this type of "racist humor" you are once again alienating the centrist voters from wanting anything to do with the GOP. Guess the only way to resurrect the Republican Party will be to form a third party of pragmatic centrist conservatives...GOP is officially DEAD!

user-pic

Well, the GOP shot itself in the foot in 2006 and then in the ass in Nov. 2008. Obviously not satisfied with the results, it is now pointing the gun squarely at it's head this time, and Chip Saltsman is pulling the trigger.

How can such a once great party go so incredibly wrong?

The GOP is already completely shut out of the NE and the entire west coast, it took a horrible pasting in the midwest and had to sweat it's ass off just to break even in the mountain states. Which leaves only the south as a region where the GOP leads.

At this rate of self-destruction, the GOP is heading toward regional party status, AND FAST.

God, what idiots.

user-pic

Mr. Mightywhitey

I will give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you get your falsehoods from Limbaugh, et al., rather than author them yourself.

David Ehrenstein is an African-American essayist/writer, with Polish and Irish ancestry as well. The particular essay in the LAT, written in 3/07, shortly after Obama announced his quest for the nomination, was not about being "untouchable" or about being insulated from criticism because of his race. The article was actually about white America searching for a political equivalent of Sidney Poitier's 1960's film roles, that of the unthreatening, heroic, polite black man. Ehrenstein's commentary was rather ironically, if not bitterly, critical of Obama and those that were pushing his candidacy.

An idiot is as an idiot does, or in this case, writes.

user-pic

The current plight of extreme ignorance among republicans is the perfect example of the dire need for improved, extensive education in our country...

or in other words

Nothing says america is poorly educated like the ignorance and stupidity of the republican leadership...

user-pic

I don't care what inspired it--a crabs in the barrel mentality demonstrated by David Ehrenstein in his article and its titleing; the low-rent Weird Al wannabe that wrote the song; or the fat, greasy, racist Oxycontin geeker that played it with glee.

With Saltsman, we're talking about someone who seeks to chair a major U.S. political party that puts forth a viable candidate each year to represent the people of the United States of America.

As an African-American (with Dutch heritage) and as an independent, this is total crap and there's no amount of clean-up you can do to take the funk outta this one. This doesn't make people like me walk away from the Republican party and its candidates, it makes us RUN.

Since the RNC didn't seem to get the memo about burying the "N-Word" (and yes, symbolically, "negro" should have been buried with it as well), can we just bury them? The demographics are not in their favor and with messages and leadership like this, they're already dead, they just don't know it yet.

user-pic

Aren't these the same people who have spent the last eight years demanding unquestioning allegiance to Bush because he was DA PRESIDENT, and anyone who dared to question anything Bush did was a hater of America, if not a hater of God? These knuckle-draggers are the biggest friggin' hypocrites on the planet.

user-pic

Ha. I heard that parody. PRetty clever.

I think it's interesting that the party of tolerance and kumbaya is so.... offended.... at an exercise of free speech. Tasteless? Sure. An opportunity for liberal whites who sleep on the down of plenty to get their backs up? You betcha. Funny thing is, I haven't seen too many blacks cry victim - at least not in print.

And no one is suing Mister Shanklin (at least, not yet). However, I find it curious that most of the... sensitive... people appear to fall into that slice of the American population where, coincidentally, the greatest concentration of lawyers is found. Could it be that the pot is calling the kettle black?

Call it what it is - tasteless. Stop waving the political flags. The election is over.

Cent13

user-pic

I never knew "free speech" was the same thing as hate speech.

So in translation: "blacks crying victim"..."sensitive people"..."lawyers"

All the conservative strings being plucked....

Still can't decipher the code word "sensitive". Does it mean Hollywood or Jews (which usually is used interchangeably) Gays (their sensitive right?). I need to visit Free Republic more often to keep up on this stuff.

It will be called racism, and those who see it otherwise will be seen as ignorant as they deceive themselves into believing its only "tasteless". This form of conservative elitism will help them sleep at night.

user-pic

This takes the RNC over the edge of the cliff. The sad thing is these guys don't even know they're falling toward the rocks, with no parachute. Happy landing!

user-pic

I want to apologize for the so-last-month avatar, "Palin does Gidget". It seems that TPM has made our dashboards unavailable and I can't upload a new pic. Looks like I'm stuck with this gawd-awful Palin pic forever and ever. Pray for me.

user-pic

I've been trying to upload a pic since October.

user-pic

Poor little thing, you.

But I don't feel sorry for you. Shouldn't have picked that pic in first place. Stupid is how stupid goes, or something like that

user-pic

Hey, it was a great dis on Palin. Be nice.

user-pic

PLEASE fix the sign-in so I don't have to go all the way back to the home page and relink to the article after signing in! Please allow me to go right back to the article and not fiddle-diddle around with my PROFILE. I don't need no stinking PROFILE.

That groused, I think the RNC is just trying to, you know, get on Rush's good side.

That's a never-ending job, and they take it very seriously. Fluff Rush.

user-pic

"I think it's interesting that the party of tolerance and kumbaya is so.... offended.... at an exercise of free speech. Tasteless? Sure. What a sophomoric attempt at a reverse mind fark. I'll clue you in as to how this whole freedom of speech thing works. They have the right to say it. I have a right to call it for the racially antagonistic bullstuff that it is, and then call upon the racially and socio-economically diverse 5 moderate democratic, 5 independent, and 5 moderate republicans that I know to direct their attention to the offensive, dead-ender, issues-bankrupt propaganda that it is.

We'll judge its importance accordingly and, perhaps, see it for what it is: a modern day manifestation of the Confederacy never having realized that it lost the Civil War.

Who's crying now?

user-pic

The RNC and Palin will make it easy for Obama 2012

user-pic

Dear MightyWhitey & Centurion13,

If you actually think there's some validity to your comments, why don't you try running them by some genuinely humorous Republicans? Your egos and preconceptions aren't at any risk when you post them on sites like this. Why not behave as if you've got a pair and see what the likes of P.J. O'Rourke or Christopher Buckley might have to say about your understanding of comedy, context and the advisability of attempting humor under the influence of oxycotin? Even if it goes badly (can you say, lead pipe cinch) you could always call them R.I.N.O's (from the safety of your keyboards of course) and then comfort yourselves with a little Rush and/or an inflatable Hockey Mom.

user-pic

This racist mentality just assures that the GOP will be the minority party for decades to come. Rethuglicans just show that they are not in touch with the way this nation is changing. The GOP is already run by 90% fat middle aged or old white men and bigoted instances like this will ensure no other group is added to their constituency.

user-pic

The G*O*P (Gang Of Pathetics!) are true bigots from way back!

user-pic

Wellllllll . . .

if i'm not mistaken . . . .

the original reference to Hussein as a "Magic Negro" was in the Los Angeles Times.

Rush simply picked up on it as a parody of left-wing drive-by media.

I'm sure we're all in agreement that the liberal media should be taken to task over this.

user-pic

They're only projecting their racism onto us. And overall, that's a good thing because it keeps us in check.

user-pic

They're only projecting their racism onto us. And overall, that's a good thing because it keeps us in check.

user-pic

Oh, give it a rest.
A)He's half-WHITE too. Negro doesn't quite cover it. I'm white, and if anyone called me negro I'd just laugh it off.
B)Exactly HOW many times did we make fun of Bush, with his big ears, bad vocabulary, semi-redneckness? There's a fat comedian on TV who is STILL making fun of him even after Barack was elected.
C)He got elected! It doesn't get any better than that. If you just MUSt consider him negro, shut up and be happy. You weren't slaves, your parents weren't slaves, and the ONLY thing holding you back is your lack of education and those huge baggy pants falling off your butt. Get over yourselves, grow up and move on.

user-pic

Boy, do you have a lot to learn.

I am a black American and no, I'm not a slave. Neither were my parents slaves. But I have experienced racial prejudice in my lifetime and at age 57 some experiences have been quite recent (within the last few years). My parents most certainly experienced racial prejudice in their lifetime and many black in America experience it on a daily basis.

This, unfortunately, is a reality. Look at the attacks upon blacks in our country immediately after the election of Obama. Largely perpetrated by sick white youths (as opposed to 40 year olds in KKK gear).

Your statements only prove how out of touch you are in your denial of the reality of America and its black citizens even here in the 21st century.

user-pic

By the way, I happen to agree with you about the baggy pants falling of people's butts. I think it's a disgraceful "style", shows absolutely no class and is a terrible reflection on black youth.

As far as getting an education, there are two sides to that, imho. One, I do feel that too many black youths don't take responsibility for themselves and their education and it's their own fault for not having a future. On the other hand, there are cases of institutional impediments based on discrimination against blacks in the form of the quality of education in some mainly black neighborhoods whose funds are controlled largely by racist white government officials or incompetent blacks who are more into gaining power than actually educating.

That being said, it's still no excuse for your complete lack of understanding of just how prevalent racial discrimination still is in our country.

user-pic

More like this from the RNC please. And more pictures of Sarah Palin with guns and dead animals. Meanwhile if the Dems focus on issues that matter (the economy/energy/environment perhaps) and stay above the fray then they can come out on top.

Yes, it's despicable adolescent racism but I've come to expect very little from the RNC.

user-pic

Obama is learning that to get respect you have to give respect. He is disrespecting 55 million + American citizens who didn't vote for him by not releasing his personal records. I refuse to drink his Koolaid!

user-pic

So, what you're saying is that the white people will stop using Jim-Crow era racial humor when black people learn to show the proper respect?

Just askin'.

user-pic

Rush Limbaugh - lighthearted humor?

Q: How do you tell if a NeoCon is lying?

A: Their lips are moving.

Just imagine what would happen if Democrats distributed something irreverent about Conservative Martyr / Poster Boy, Ronald (trickle down) Reagan?

Rush Limbaugh - lighthearted Political Parodies! Kind of like putting LIPSTICK ON A PIG! You betcha! ROFLMAO!

user-pic

user-pic

To demean our elected President must be very high on Republican's lists at this time of both international and economy issues shows that the Grand Old Party has lost its sense of good citizenship.

As opposed to starting unnecessary wars and ruining the economy? Yes, one could, if they were comploetely cynical, notice a lack of good-will and patriotism. Ya think?

user-pic

I think most of you have failed to see the hidden meaning behind the Barack The Magic Negro song. Much like its namesake Puff The Magic Dragon is actually about doing heroin Barack The Magic Negro is actually about a fat asshole doing Oxycontin.

user-pic

Where can I go to cast my vote for Chip as RNC chair?

This guy is a perfect representation of where the GOP is headed.

user-pic

I think the Republicans ought to make George Bush head of the RNC. Bush once talked about wanting to spread his DNA around the goverment. I think Bush spreading his mutant DNA around the Republican Party would be great. It would be sort of like releasing a genetically modified mosquito that fails to breed and thereby reduces the incidence of malaria. Bush has done wonders for the Democratic Party.

user-pic

I just think it's interesting that the GOP (Gang of Perpetrators is my personal favorite expansion of the acronym) is going down for possibly the third time and suddenly there's this huge jump in posting at TPM comment threads by crude, aggro, overtly racist, crazy, or some combination of the above, lumbering trolls. These threads have been pretty troll-free for some time now, and suddenly here they all come. I guess now is the time for all good... trolls... to come to the defense of the party. Wielding their potent weapons of calculated offense and spurious argument.

And by the way, it was on TPM that I saw the suggestion that, given their recent losses, the GOP is falling back to their redoubt, the South - it's a retrenchment. The upswing in racist rhetoric is consistent with that, as is the way they came out swinging against the UAW on behalf of their own states' non-union foreign plants. (Disciplining labor is, in a way, what slavery was all about.) Retreat to a secure base and regroup to launch new attacks. We're going to see a lot more loveliness coming out of the new Southern Strategy. And it may not hurt them as much as we would like it to - I'm not gleeful about this yet. We'll see.

user-pic

They still do not get it.

Here's the money shot:

Saltsman defended the choice of the Shanklin CD, telling The Hill: "...and I think that RNC members have the good humor and good sense to recognize that his songs... are light-hearted political parodies."

See, when someone is a parodist, and/or employs the parody in question, it's not the people who commit the act of parody that need to get it.

It's the people who are being parodied who are supposed to get it. That's the whole point of satire: to point out the failings of a moral stance or orientation by employing scorn and, optimally, illustrate how to extract oneself from said failing. And it's been that way since (either roughly or at least; I'll defer to scholars) Classical Greece...about 500 BCE.

Finding the irony in the money shot is an exercise left to the reader.

user-pic

Give up finding the irony? Well, there are actually two pieces or irony in this sad, sad thing.

The first is somewhat obvious: the Republicans are talking to themselves, cluelessly thinking they are addressing us, the Angry Left.

But the second is a bit subtle. In it, they are advising us, the Angry Left, to avoid making the mistake of building a cult of personality around Barack Obama like the one they built around their Magical Whitey.

And that Magical Whitey, gentle reader, is Ronald Reagan.

We, the Angry Left, should heed the warning contained in their example; and, though it galls and stings, graciously thank them for it.

That is politics. You're welcome.

user-pic

So, the GOP shot itself in the foot in 2006, and then in the rear-end in 2008 with McCain's terrible, disorganized campaign and a horrible, radical VP candidate who liked to pal around with america haters and secessionists. Not satisfied with damaging itself twice in two years, this once great party - the once party of non-discrimination and non-racism, to note, the GOP has decided to now shoot itself in the head with yahoos like Saltsman spitting out racist crap like this. But the worst part is not that he has done what he is done. The worst part is that the GOP has been very quiet and tacitly accepts his racial junk. This is the death knell for the GOP and will relegate it to being a regional party for one, maybe two generations, which is bad for the USA, for we need a competitive 2-party system in order to maintain a healthy representative democracy within the framework of a republic.

user-pic

No big surprise here ... It's been a published fact that the GOP is primarily made up of OLD, WHITE HAIRED, RICH BIGOTS. Moreorless mentioned at the St. Paul, MN Republican Convention. Matter of fact, their last ditch effort to push McCain forward was to name Palin as his running mate ... Ah yes, Shock and Awe and most importantly , Sex Appeal ... Look back at her rallies, she worked the crowds into absolute frenzy on the trend of racism. Not proud of this segment of our America ... things must change!

user-pic

kmac, I had the distinct feeling that there were a lot of male Republican voters looking at Sarah Palin and thinking "Oh yeah, I'd do her in a New York minute!". (To be honest, I would too - she's hot, as long as she's not talking, but I sure wouldn't vote for her!) :-)

I feel this was a significant part of their basis for supporting her on the McCain ticket, I am absolutely sure. It certainly couldn't have been on intelligence. As for Palin being "for women", what an oxymoron! Here is a person who would deny an abortion to women even in the case of rape or incest. How in the hell is that "in support of women"??

And I wonder... was I the only one that felt like watching a Palin rally was like changing channels on the TV and happing to come across the Jerry Springer Show? And the Rethuglicans are already looking to foist her on us again in 2012? Egad!

user-pic

researcher wrote "Imagine that, the first half black president to be the cause of the demise of our country."

Uh, researcher... I hate to bring you breaking news (apparently you've been stuck on a deserted island somewhere, completely cut off from civilization and current events for the last 8 years) but Shrub has taken care of that already... In fact it is Obama who will have the unenviable job of trying to clean up the mess of what is without question one of the worst presidencies this country has ever experienced. But, of course, FACTS like that hardly figure into your little irrational neo-con tirades. Should we be surprised?...

user-pic

"Uh, researcher... Public school?

This financial crisis was created some time ago with the creation of non-Constitutional entities of Fannie and Freddy Mac. They were created by guess who? A Democrat President in the early 1900's. Do you know who that was? This created a market where none previously existed. They operated with some success until during the Clinton regime Fannie and Freddy fell out of favor of the socialists that created and supported them. They actually had good balance sheets. Clinton ordered the organizations to start accepting mortgages in which there was no hope of ever being repaid. Fannie and Freddy were accused of being, yup, racist. The mantra of the mad left. And they came under attack from a new source. Barrack Hussein Obama attorney for ACORN and bankers were threatened; ACORN terrorists went to bankers homes and threatened their children if they did not give loans to people who would have no way of paying them back. Freddy and Fannie caved and began loading their portfolios with mortgages of bad paper. The market tried to offload that bad paper by bundling them in CDO's and the market went crazy with the inflated returns of bad paper. Until the house of cards came tumbling down. Yes the democratically controlled congress was warned but gee would it not be great to remain a do nothing congress and then we can demonize the repubs and the Great Satan Bush. The problem with that is that there are still people out here that have not been dumbed down.

I understand that you have deficits in your education. It is the purpose of public education to dumb down people so they can be more easily controlled. Free thinkers who are informed will for some time continue to be a thorn in the side of the radical dumbed down left. You probably have not read any history but historically the first people to be eliminated from any socialist society are the thinking people. Stalin sure had a good time of it you know, millions. So for a little while the dumbed down left will still occasionally be irritated by the free thinkers until all of us have died out and you are left with a new utopia, a socialist Vunderland. Until the human spirit says, no more. Then you will have another civil or global war and the whole thing will start all over again. At least until about 2085 when geneticists say there will be so many genetic anomalies at that time it is doubtful the human race will be viable. (In 1960 1000 genetic anomalies were identified, it is now over 13,000 and by 2085 will be over 100,000 otherwise known as extinction).

So perhaps maybe we should not take ourselves so seriously. And yes the whole issue of the magic thing was first brought up not by the repubs but guess who? The leftist LA Times! Oh my. Crap, another mindless attack crushed, what will we think up next? Maybe repubs were the cause of WW2? Maybe repubs were the cause of global warming... oops can't use that one, scientists are abandoning that now realizing the earth is entering a great cooling age and a CO2 vapor canopy would be nice to save us from a global ice age. Oh, well.

user-pic

Oh, by the way, personally I am not a repub. I am an independent who votes for whomever is reasonable and rational and has a good grasp of what our Constitution is all about because it and only it gives us our freedoms.

user-pic

Oh, by the way, personally I am not a repub. I am an independent who votes for whomever is reasonable and rational and has a good grasp of what our Constitution is all about because it and only it gives us our freedoms."
-----
The Song:
The song spoofs veteran black activist Reverend Al Sharpton complaining that "Obama is not a proper African-American". It has been viewed more than 279,000 times on YouTube. And was first broke by the leftist LA Times..
-----

I wonder as a free thinker, does that make Reversed Reverend Al Sharpton a racist pig?

If that is the case would the Reversed Reverend Jessie Jackson want to cut Sharpton's nuts off as well as BHO's?

I wonder how many nuts cut off would be enough for the Reversed Reverend Jessie Jackson? Maybe he would like to cut the nuts off all white people who have a great tan like BHO? You know people who are not PROPER AFRICAN-AMERICAN as the Reversed Reverend Al Sharpton accused BHO. And who decides who is not PROPER? The Reversed Reverend Al Sharpton? I know Hitler had definite ideas who was PROPER. I know that Karl Marx and Joseph Stalin had ideas who was PROPER. Hitler is the reason that I do not have any paternal relatives, they were murdered in Nazi Germany because they were not PROPER.

You see it is not just "white" people who are racist pigs.

----

On another note:
Chip Saltsman, campaigning to become chairman of the Republican National Committee, says he sent CDs of the song about President-elect Barack Obama, the first African-American to win the White House, as a joke.
-
A joke? I wonder why the Repubs are having such a difficult time of it. Could it be...?
-

Anyway personally I could not vote for either dem or repub... not the dem because he is hiding his COLB and may not be Constitution qualified to be President... could lead to civil war. Gun sales and munitions stockpiling is up 4000% nationwide.

On the other hand, I could not vote for the repub as yes he is a certified hero who gave much to allow us the ability to argue back and forth, but with all due respect to the man he had the energy of my dead grandmother. And speaking of dead grandmothers BHO's who taped her assertion that BHO was born in Kenya is not around anymore. Hmmm? I know, but history tells a sad story about how the need for power has prompted humans to do dastardly things... King Henry the 8th had two of his six wives murdered. Oh, but really researcher we are living in modern times and such things could never happen here or now, shame shame... Oh? How many were murdered by Stalin? By Hitler? What about the ethnic cleansing murders in India? Africa? Why are Christians having their hands and heads cut off in Muslim controlled areas? Power. Why was a sweet and kind 69 year old woman holding a yes on Prop 8 sign In California thrown to the ground and beaten by loving tolerant homosexuals simply because she was exercising her right to free speech believing that the traditional family unit deserves to be protected? Power. The silliest thing in the world.

Pessimist? Perhaps, but I have gone to other areas of this TPM to find posts calling for the beheading of people like Palin, Coulter, etc. Loving? Tolerant? Liberal? No not liberal, not tolerant, just hate. Humans can do one thing and one thing very well. Hate. Remember that the next time people like the Reversed Reverend Jessie Jackson calls for the cutting off of someone's nuts because they are not PROPER. Excuse the digression here, but the honorable Dr. Mengele taught many subordinates the proper way to cut the nuts off of hundreds of thousands of Jews as Jews were not PROPER. I wonder does that make the Reversed Reverend Jessie Jackson a fuc**g Nazi?

Oh my, does that make me a racist pig for suggesting that the Reversed Reverend Jessie Jackson is like Dr. Mengele?
I guess I will have to have my nuts cut off.

user-pic

To the GOP ("Gang of Perpetrators" -nice)

COMPETENCE = MAGIC

And of course Rush Limbaugh works against the betterment of our country. He tells lies and he knows he's telling lies. Bastard.

user-pic

On the storyboards: Amos 'n Andy the movie. Steve Martin plays Andy.

user-pic

Personally I'm delighted at this turn of events. I hope that high level GOP-ers continue to display their racism. Of course they'll spend the next 4 years trying to cover their tracks and pretend that they didn't try to win the 2008 Presidential election by inciting racial hatred. It will work unless the public can be reminded periodically how they pulled out all the stops over the last 18 months trying to scare us into keeping a good, competent man out of the White House because he has dark skin.
