At Fitzgerald's Request, Obama Team Delays Release Of Blago Review

The Obama transition team has completed its internal probe into any contacts the Obama team has had with the Blagojevich camp over Obama's Senate seat -- but the results won't be released until next week.

Here's the statement, just out from Obama spokesperson Dan Pfeiffer:

"At the direction of the President-elect, a review of Transition staff contacts with Governor Blagojevich and his office has been conducted and completed and is ready for release. That review affirmed the public statements of the President-elect that he had no contact with the governor or his staff, and that the President-elect's staff was not involved in inappropriate discussions with the governor or his staff over the selection of his successor as US Senator.

"Also at the President-elect's direction, Gregory Craig, counsel to the Transition, has kept the US Attorney's office informed of this fact-gathering process in order to ensure our full cooperation with the investigation.

"In the course of those discussions, the US Attorney's office requested the public release of the Transition review be deferred until the week of December 22, in order not to impede their investigation of the governor. The Transition has agreed to this revised timetable for release."

So the Obama team is claiming that its internal review has found that no Obama staff engaged in any inappropriate discussions of any dealmaking around the seat. But at Fitzgerald's request, the details as to what contacts did take place won't be released until next week.

Well the media is going to talk non stop about why fitz had them not release the info until next week.

user-pic

You could have put a period after the word stop.

They will talk about anything or nothing, but talk they must.

user-pic

So, let's have some fun with this. What do you think the media version of this will be?

"The Obama team claims that AG Fitzgerald asked them to delay their report. AG isn't commenting. It's not clear if the lack of comment is because the AG disagrees with the Obama take on things or not, but it's obvious that this will do nothing to quell the furor over this scandal, which threatens to dog Obama into the midterm elections in 2010...."

user-pic

The first part of your version could be different. Sadly, the last part is certain. When there is no crisis or controversy, they invent one.

user-pic

Actually, a better prediction would be absolute media silence on this.

Oh dear. That's not fun we can believe in!

user-pic

If you want to get a taste of how the media is going to spin it, check Politico.

"Democrats outside the transition said they worry that the delay will continue to distract from Obama's message as he makes a final round of appointments before leaving this weekend for more than a week of Christmas vacation in Hawaii."

No actual Democrats quoted.

user-pic

Shorter: Democrats worry.

Instead of getting out there and forcefully pushing the message that Obama is doing precisely what Fitzgerald wants him to do, Democrats worry about how the media is going to fill the vacuum left by the Democrats' own failure to lead on this.

Same as it ever was.

user-pic
Shorter: Democrats worry.

Thankfully, we've got Jonze to take care of that for us :-)

user-pic

This Blago issue is just a waste of time, we all know Obama didn't do anything wrong, yet the press in collaboration with GOP keeps beating dead horse.

Frankly, i have not seen any good reason to watch cable TV nor read main stream propaganda news media, see politico website, since the election. I'll continue to read blogs, provided they maintain certain level of sanity, or else nothing is worth paying attention to.

user-pic

The RNC thinks they have a playable hand with Blago-Obama. Not to worry, they'll overplay it, as usual.....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r2M1zMaZPmI&eurl=http://www.noquarterusa.net/blog/

user-pic

What waste of time? There was an attempt to sell and buy off a Senate seat. Friends of Jesse Jackson Jr. were purportedly involved according to Blago himself, Rahm was in discussions with Blagojevich, and one of the proposed candidates was a long-term friend of Obama's. So we don't investigate potential corruption if we like the candidate?

user-pic

Did you read the indictment? If you had you would have noticed the language on page 8 where Blago pretty much clears the Obama team of playing in his little game. What part of "**** them" don't you understand.

user-pic

Apparently you think it is improper for the titular head; the president-elect, of the Democratic Party to discuss his preferred replacement in the Senate. Just because Rush and Hannity say it is wrong, doesn't make it so.

You see, Timmy, that's not illegal.

user-pic

Gbenga - The only reason to watch cable or TV News today other than for weather or sports results is to watch an Obama press conferenceperiod The rest is mostly crap.

user-pic

Hey I was right about Team Obama not providing too much detail due to Fitz not wanting them to impede on the ongoing investigation!

Do I get gold star?

user-pic

Yes, you're the smartest boy in class today! ;-)

user-pic

Well, I said it would take them three weeks to get it done and it only took them one. So, I say that this discrepency raises troubling, troubling unanswred questions.

user-pic

No doubt Steve. This obvious rush to paint the P.E.'s hands clean can only be interpreted as _______________. [fill in the blank].

user-pic

The transitionators have put this on hold.  Right now they're scurrying to compile a list of who wears size-10 shoes.

user-pic

I'm Boyd Reed, and I approved that size-10 message. :-)

user-pic

You betcha! Wink, wink! Your prize?

A free subscription to Election Central!!!

user-pic

Very good Mike. You win a cookie.

Sorry, Got my Kelly's Heroes DVD today.

user-pic

Sittin' here sippin' wine, eatin' cheese, catchin' some rays.

user-pic

My prediction: There will be NO THERE THERE.

This is a made up controversy perpetuated by the media because the MSM is bored with Obama's smooth transition.

The silver lining in all this is that Obama will now be known as the "anti-Blago" and will continue to be open, honest, and transparent in government. Another silver lining is that this incident has taught the Obama transition team to be tight-lipped and leak-free when they need to be when since the election they were starting to run a "leaky" ship.

user-pic

Contrast the headline here, versus the one at Swampland (sic):

Fitzgerald to Obama: Not So Fast

Which implies the Obama campaign was trying to pull a fast one...get it?????!>?!>?@>!@?!>>!????

user-pic

The part that really made me bang my head against my keyboards was when Tumulty writes

Why? That's unclear.

As if something incredibly sinister is going on....

user-pic

They all suck. See below for the headline from the WaPo online? How 'bout that subhead? "despite scandal" - no mention of what scandal or whose scandal, just the suggestion that Obama himself is involved in one.

Poll: Obama's Ratings Unscathed
Post-ABC News Poll | More than three-quarters of Americans approve performance, despite scandal.

user-pic

As I've said in the beginning of my questioning why Obama hadn't released his results to his internal investigation -- if he's been ordered NOT TO, then just SAY SO. Otherwise explain why he isn't releasing the info.

As for why Fritzgerald would have him delay till WEEK of 22nd -- all I can figure is, it's the holiday week and less people paying attention. Cause if Frit's is hoping to catch Blogo at something, telling him when they will stop doing so (the 22nd) won't help much.

All I know is, thank you Pres Elect Obama for finally telling us the reason for the silence.

user-pic

The key phrase is "inappropriate discussions", meaning that there were "appropriate discussions", but what constitutes "appropriate" and who decided what was and wasn't? This is what the MSM will flog for the next week.

user-pic

Maybe but all morning on cable news the MSM was more interested in "Bush vs the size 10 shoe".

user-pic

Not on Mornin' Joe....

Scarborough has gone off the deep end of the Repub anti-Obama kool-aid pool.

The other commentators that attempted to argue with Joe were getting exasperated with Joe.

I'm sorry, but there isn't anything else on my cable TV during my morning wake up time that I find interesting.

user-pic

Wait until tomorrow morning.

user-pic

Huh? What's up?

user-pic

Tune in in the Morning. Joe will explain how Rahm Emanuel is in up to his eyeballs and Team Obama is trying to cut a plea bargain so that he can do community service in the White House.

Pat Buchanan will compare it to how Nixon considered breaking into Watergate vs fire bombing the Brookings institute and decided to bomb Cambodia instead.

Mika will again complain about mistreatment of Sarah Palin and Willie will finally bring some sense to it all by declaring it news you can't use. What a way to start the morning!

user-pic

Did anyone else notice that Greg Craig has Blagoje-hair? (Grey but the same stylist...what's up with that?)

user-pic

He so does not.

Craig actually has a forehead. Blago's forehead appears to be in an undisclosed location.

user-pic

I think I found it, the IL SOS appears to have more than her share of forehead...more like sixhead...possibly sevenhead...

http://www.illinoisattorneygeneral.gov/photos/2008_12/img_lrg/MG3506_640.jpg

user-pic

Isn't that the state attorney general?

user-pic

Check...I was distracted

user-pic
user-pic

Craig has a 3/4 Blago, not the full Blago.

user-pic

Just to be clear, the Illinois SOS (i assume you meant Secretary of State) is a man, named Jesse White.

user-pic

I am so glad that the Obama team came out with this statement, maybe now the talking heads will stop talking. I for one have had it with the likes of "Morning Joe". I will have to stop watching to keep my sanity.

user-pic

maybe now the talking heads will stop talking

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

ROTFLMAO

*phew* that was a good one!

...wait, you were serious?

user-pic

More from Karen Tumulty at Time.com:

"...
In the course of those discussions, the US Attorney's office requested the public release of the Transition review be deferred until the week of December 22, in order not to impede their investigation of the governor. The Transition has agreed to this revised timetable for release," said Obama Transition Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer.

TRANSLATION: Obama's team was planning to release its findings about contacts between Obama aides and the Illinois Governor's today. (I'm told it turned out to be "pretty milquetoast stuff.") However, when White House Counsel-to-be Greg Craig informed U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald of that, the U.S. Attorney asked him to hold off. Why? That's unclear. One possibility is that having that information in the public domain would make it more difficult for Fitzgerald to pursue leads involving other parties. "

user-pic

Afternoon, peeps.

Since Commander CooCoo is moving to Dallas, I think there should be a giant party where we all go throw shoes at his house. For a housewarming gift, ya know...

user-pic

Count me in!

I have to give him credit. He has good reflexes.

user-pic

Indeed. That first shot would have def made a Nike Swoosh imprint on his forehead.

user-pic

If you look at the slide show on Huffington, GWB's head is a blur as he's dodging the shoe and Maliki has a look on his face like "Damn! Not the shoe again!"

user-pic

Yep. He and Ann Coulter, who as I recall, ducked a cream pie very swiftly.

user-pic

Gov Ryan (Blags predecessor) wasn't as lucky, he got cranked in the face with a cream pie my first week at SIU...turned out to be a faculty member's daughter who got him.

user-pic

You can definitely tell W played some baseball in his time. He started ducking while the dude was winding up. Not many sports program that move into your muscle memory.

user-pic

Of course right wingnuts are good
at ducking. They are paranoid!
They always think they are being attacked.

user-pic

Dickday should be over here laughing at that TenaX! I would ride my bicycle from Charleston to Dallas to throw my shoes! What a great idea.

user-pic

Shoes for industry!  Shoes for defense!

user-pic

(Fire)sign on to that. Wow, I'm old.

user-pic

Me too = we're all bozos on this bus, Mr. Tirebiter.

user-pic

Someone's beat you to it. I got an email today from Democrats.com. They're joining with CODE PINK and AfterDowningStreet to sponsor the "Shoes for Bush" rally on Dec. 17 at Lafayette Square Park in front of the White House. They're going to have a large supply of old shoes donning the names of Iraqis who have died since the American invasion, and are encouraging people to bring their own old shoes.

http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/node/38242

user-pic

I wish Fitzgerald would release a similar statement about his request.

user-pic

He did:

"United States Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald confirmed the request in a statement, saying the extra time will allow his office to "conduct certain interviews."

CNN has read Fitzgerald's statement.

user-pic

Cool. Thanks.

user-pic

HHHhmmmmm, Tena, only size 10's or will any size do? Do olde smelly flip flops count?

user-pic

Shoes is shoes.

:)

user-pic

Wait, now what do we talk about for the next week?

It's only Monday and we have to wait until next week!!!

Hrmm...we could re-hash the Hillary wants to take over the White House story again. Or we could ask ourselves about Obama, Who is he really?

My guess is the Holder drama is going to take over again until the Blagflabomich stuff comes out next week.

What big appointments are left for Obama? Does anyone have some sort of organizational chart with the names of those appointed and ?'s next to the appointments still needing to be made? I hadn't really seen one yet.

user-pic

The shoe thing will keep me entertained for the rest of the week.

user-pic

I really laughed out loud for a long time when I saw that video.

user-pic

Rebok and Nike have been in touch with the perp about a shoe deal.

user-pic

Mike, here is a link to a site with the Transition info from GSA & NARA. More than you could ever want to know:

http://directory.presidentialtransition.gov/

user-pic

Here is my lawyer's take on this.

Assistant U.S. Atty.: (picking up phone) Yello.
Transition Counsel: Jimmy, it's Ted.
AUSA: Hey, thanks for getting back to me. What's up?
Trans Counsel: So we had our IT guy get all the stuff together, and we talked to the people who talked with the Blago people, and we put all that into declarations, as requested.
AUSA: Super. That was pretty fast.
Trands Counsel: Ha, not to Fox News or Limbaugh.
AUSA: I hear you. So when can you get it to me?
Trans Counsel: Today, if you need it. I can send the CD by Fed-Ex, or I can get the e-mails to you by .pdf, however you want.
AUSA: Just overnight 'em.
Trans Counsel: Okay, I'll get it out today.
AUSA: How much we talking about?
Trans Counsel: Less than a redwell full. Not much.
AUSA: Cool. Well, listen, we want to review it, and I am going to need to run it by some people here. We don't want the defense to know what's in there before us, so do you mind keeping a lid on it for a while until we do what we need to do with it?
Trans Counsel: How long do you need?
AUSA: How about January 2 or 3?
Trans Counsel: Ugh, that's not going to work. we have to get this off the plate, it's too big a distraction. How about Wednesday or Thursday?
AUSA: Well, give us until the 22nd. We want to make sure we know what's in there before the beans are spilled. Blago's defense counsel reads the paper, too.
Trans counsel: Erm. Let me check, but the 22nd may work.
AUSA; I would appreciate it.
Trans Counsel: Okay, let me get back to you.
AUSA: Yeppers.
Trans Counsel: Later.

(end call)

OH THE DRAMA!!!!

user-pic

Thank for this!

Of course, it would be reported as "Fitzgerald staff concerned that Obama, in releasing his own report, may undermine case against Blags..."

user-pic

I is a loser.

That should be "Thanks".

user-pic

No one has a clue.

Do y'all have any idea how long we have been waiting for a Colorado lawyer to get two signatures to a well agreement? A year. The lawyer hasn't gotten around to it. And of course, he knows we're lawyers.

Shit does not happen yesterday in the law. It happens when it happens.

user-pic

A year and no signatures yet? That sounds like it's bordering on malpractice.

user-pic
Hrmm...we could re-hash the Hillary wants to take over the White House story again. Or we could ask ourselves about Obama, Who is he really?blockquote>

There's always Caroline Kennedy, whom some think is too inexperienced to take Hillary's seat. Somebody want to tell me just what legislative experience Hillary had when she won that election?

user-pic

Man, Obama's team has a looooong way to go until they learn how to handle the media. This has been terribly handled.

user-pic

Are you serious? Don't you realize by now that Camp Obama doesn't care about the media? They'll do things in their own time and how they think it should be done. I've interpreted the silence over the past few days as a "(Bleep) you!"

user-pic

peopel here are like a bunch of old ladies.(no offense to old ladies)

relax!

this means NOTHING!.

and did you ever think for a second, just 1 second, thats ONE second, that YOU are guilty of keeping this in the news as much as anyone else by yapping about it here in comments?

user-pic

Hey hey hey! Some people here are a bunch of old ladies, etc.

I am so not worried haven't been from the start. Certainly this is nothing at all except Obama doing what Fitz asked him to and if the press wants to make something out of that - {rolled eyes} - well, just when I thought they might be rethinking their behavior the past 12 years, they make it clear that that isn't on their radar.

It's business as usual. And the press is as well loved by the public as Congress is.

;)

user-pic

You're right! The original post was about the "scandal", and we are so neurotic because we're actually talking about the original post.

I think it's time to hijack the thread, to go all Palin, and talk about what I want to talk about, instead of what the snooty media (I'm talking to you, Greg Sargent!!) want to talk about...

So who's got a good recipe for ginger molasses cookies, anyway??

user-pic
YOU are guilty of keeping this in the news as much as anyone else by yapping about it here in comments?

OMYGOD! I have that power? Really? There are some big stories I think the media has missed. So if I talk about them in comments, does that mean they will be headlines tomorrow?

dude.

user-pic

As it becomes apparent that there was no inappropriate behavior on the part of Obama or his transition team in their dealings with Blagojevich, the right will turn their targeting towards Fitzgerald in an attempt to minimize Libby's criminal acts. The leading edge of this attack has already begun.

user-pic

Oh if Obama doesn't come clean on this right now the country could get into an unnecessary war or we could lose 3 million jobs or an American city could drown or someone on Wall Street could ruin our economy or the Taleban might shut down transport of supplies to our Afghanistan forces from Pakistan or terrorists might take over a hotel or hijack a supertanker or North Korea could detonate a nuclear weapon!

user-pic

Those who are itching to throw a shoe or two at the shrub, can do it here. Wait for the end of the game.

http://www.kroma.no/2008/bushgame/

user-pic

That's pretty fun.
