« Election Central Morning Roundup | Home | Obama's Routes To Victory »

Readers, Thank You

As I think Atrios put it on the eve of the 2006 elections, whatever happens today, we'll all get up tomorrow and just keep on working away. This is only one chapter in a much bigger story, and what a story it is. Wow.

But with this election about to end after two years, it seems like a good time to pause and thank you all for your loyalty and help throughout this amazing campaign, and to give you a sense of what's next on this site.

We wouldn't have been able to make this blog work without you. It got a little tense at times, no question, especially during the Dem primary. But you've all been an indispensable feature of this site. You all kept us in line -- rather aggressively -- when we were wrong or being dimwitted. You all kept the comment threads lively and incredibly smart.

Many of you provided us with no shortage of tips that made it possible to break stories here that -- I hope -- had some kind of impact, however limited, on the race. And you boosted traffic here at this site to an amazing degree -- on recent weekdays Election Central has been pulling in around a quarter of a million page views each day, and frequently more.

The whole premise of this blog is that it's possible to join with readers in actually caring about the outcome in politics while simultaneously doing real reporting with integrity and fairness. The conventions of political reporting have long held that this is a no-no. So be it -- we reject that idea. We think you can call McCain's robo-calls what they are -- robo-slime -- while simultaneously doing good journalism. I hope we pulled off this balancing act with some measure of success, and I hope we continue to do so.

What's next? We're going to keep right on going tomorrow, right through the transition and into the new administration. We need your help covering the next chapter.

Which is to say, come back tomorrow, and the next day, and the next. We won't be able to get it right without you.

Greg, so good to know that you and the TPM staff will still be here to take us through the amazing times ahead.

user-pic

comments were temporarily disabled -- apologies...

user-pic

Thanks for your long days and sleepless nights. But most of all, thanks for letting us take part in the process. If interactive journalism is more than a catch-phrase, it means that readers as well as journalists can benefit from collaboration and feedback. I know I've been grateful for an outlet to which I can make my own small contributions, and receive in return a huge flow of information that I never could have gathered on my own.

But don't think this marks any sort of a conclusion. We're too addicted now to let you guys off the hook.

user-pic

Might be just me, but I'd sure like an open "I voted" thread for people to share their experiences today.

Would be something I'd like to bookmark for the rest of my life!

user-pic

That's a fine idea.

user-pic

We wouldn't have been able to make this blog work without you

Considering the server issues caused by the traffic, this statement is hilarious. But I kid because I love.

Thank you guys for all your hard work.

user-pic

Co-sign, on both the issues.

user-pic

I'll triple stamp that.

user-pic

Yes, this is a good site, but the servers are an issue. When big news breaks, this site cant hold up do it traffic increase. That needs to be dealt with once and for all.

user-pic

No matter how crazy they drive us, there's no place like TPM:

Your crazed reader/bloggers love you back, TPM!

user-pic

Thanks Greg, for your tireless work, and Eric too (as well as Josh and all the TPM crew). It has been much appreciated.

user-pic

Thanks Greg, for your tireless work, and Eric too (as well as Josh and all the TPM crew). It has been much appreciated.

user-pic

Thanks Greg. ;)

user-pic

I come here for the chicks. (Ouch!)

And the ummmmm... articles & news & ummmm... maps.

Thanks Josh & Greg & Erik... and Al & Lila & all. You've done something great here. Kick back and enjoy..... Ok, that's long enough. WHAT'S HAPPENING IN INDIANA??!!!??!! ;-)

user-pic

My only regret is that I wish I'd found this site earlier.

It's been my oasis for the last 3 months.

user-pic

Same here!

user-pic

I found Josh in early 2004, when he was just "a guy" and there was no way to comment at all, except to email "the guy." Early readers for some reason were apparently men. But not knowing that, I became addicted anyway - because "the guy" appealed to me - he had ways of thinking about issues, pondering them closely, following up. He invited info from readers - and I know I was already following in 2004 - because I sent him info on the Madrid bombings - since my brother on law in Spain had phoned us and shared things that few outside Spanish, politically involved leftists would have been able to know. It's that kind of back and forth communication that has characterized TPM all these years. Each of us may know info that makes a huge difference - and sharing it helps all of us.

Welcome new people. Welcome old timers.

It's a joy to share this historic moment with you.

user-pic

2005. I was a lurker for a while and then started 'contributing' right before that crazy 2006 election. Now it's almost like coffee for me.

Thanks Greg for all your work, and we'll keep feeding links and such, when we actually have time or aren't feeling overly lazy.... ;)

user-pic

Thank you, Greg, Eric, et al. You all do fantastic work, and whatever gripe I or someone else may have with this or that story, you're putting the mainstream media to shame on almost an hourly basis. To engage in understatement, that is not nothing

user-pic

You have given new meaning to the term 'public service'. Thanks for everything you do.

user-pic

I'm late to the party (only been posting for about 4 months) but I appreciate that you guys give me the fence to lean over and yell at the neighbors. My work environment and home neighborhood are considerably more conservative than I am and it's good to have a place to vent, commiserate, celebrate and debate with other non-anti-intellectuals.

Thank you!

user-pic

Greg,
Wouldn't miss it. Thank you for making this site possible and available. Everyone here appreciates all the work and time you and Eric put in to bring it--so we can bring it.

This type of independent voice--*our* voices, an answer to a lot of the political imbalance and nonsense in the media's political coverage--is long overdue.

Thanks for filling that void.

user-pic

Thanks for all your hard work, Greg. I love this community. Although I only recently began commenting on these threads, this site has been my number one must-read for years. I just think all you guys are great.

user-pic

Thank you Greg and Erik both. You made me the most informative person in the room on most occasions.

user-pic

Thank you Greg, Josh, Eric, David, and everyone else at TPM. I've never felt as informed about an election in my life, and it's because TPM is the first and last place I go to get my political news.

You guys are making it ever more implausible and ridiculous for the MSM to sneer condescendingly at Those Blogs. In the words of a great Northern California poet, y'all are 2 Legit...2 Legit 2 Quit.

user-pic

Thanks Greg, and thanks Josh.

From a foreign perspective (ie, UK style press), this is one of the few independent, fair, and _brave_ media outlets in the country.

btw, you forgot to mention how Hilary is doing in the poles.

user-pic

And thank you for helping push some truth into the MSM

user-pic

I don't know about the rest of you but I'm going to have WITHDRAWS for weeks now getting over the RACE.

I'll need TPM to release my frustrations on. Thanks for being here.

user-pic

It's been a trip.  Josh knows how to pick 'em.  Youz guyz are great.

You don't hear Keith Olbermann citing dKos or HuffPo on an almost daily basis, do ya?  There's a reason for that!

Hope you enjoy your green Google lava lamp :-)

user-pic

Let me add that TPM EC has done wonders helping me get out of bed in the morning.

Here in SF, Eric's Morning Roundup comes up around 6:00 a.m.  If I don't make it onto the site soon thereafter, I'm way behind reading comments all day.  It's more of an attraction than that first cup of coffee, or even lox and bagels!

user-pic

Where do you find a decent lox & bagel in the city?

user-pic

Usually I make 'em myself.  But they're not that hard to find.  Noah's are pretty good, and they're in lost of places.  Also, House of Bagels on the north side of Geary at 15th Ave, and Artist Bistro at Geary & 33rd.

user-pic

Drat. Way out in the Avenues! I'm in Oakland myself, but work the occasional assignment downtown.

Go A's.

user-pic

Thanks Greg!

user-pic

Nice try, Greg, but once the election is over, we're outta here so you can start kissing that ad revenue goodbye. Slow death, my friend.

I kiiiiiid, I kiiiiid!

user-pic

This is the first election, I think, where there truly was a "national dialog" on the issues.

I think the impact of new media, of technology, etc. on this election has been, and will be, much discussed for years. But the emphasis is usually on people like Greg and Josh and all those "official" TPM-ers, who rightly get attention for providing brilliant new voices and a welcome return to true investigative journalism.

But that's less interesting to me than the fact that millions of people have commented on millions of sites, fighting it out and trying to have their own influence on the election. Besides the top-notch journalism at TPM, this site has been an innovator (starting, for me, with the DOJ prosecutor firings) in harnessing their readers to provide information.

But in a less highbrow way this real empowerment of the public is happening all over: the intense reader reaction to the Gibson-Stephanopolis debate in the Dem primary forced the station to at least acknowledge the backlash; Rezko, Wright and Ayers would not be so well known if GOP loyalists had not thrown them into every comment thread; go to youtube and type Obama Song and you will find hundreds of home-made commercials for or against him.

And the fact that Obama's campaign has been all about the power of every voice just shows again how in tune he is to the zeitgeist.

user-pic

It seems like only yesterday everyone was swearing at Greg and Erik for being Hillary shill sor some such. Good times.

user-pic

Oh those good times ...great, weren't they ?

user-pic

When Greg was a Hillary shill - those were the days :) Seriously thanks to all the TPM folks for your insight when you agreed with me and giving me a forum to publicly grumble when I didn't.

user-pic

thank you dijamo, glad we're on the same side.

user-pic

Thanks.

user-pic

See what you get for kidding up above?

user-pic

That's just TPM whispering sweet nothings in your ear. :)

user-pic

Thanks so much to everyone at TPM for keeping my head from exploding amid the slime and stupidity.

You guys are doing essential, heroic work and REAL journalism. Bravo!

user-pic

Thanks to all of you. You kept me sane for the past three months -- kindred souls drowning out the clamor of shrill right wing divisiveness.

user-pic

Thanks Greg and TPM. You've provided the best coverage of the election, all the way from the primaries. I feel I was privy to some insider info and analysis, so wasn't spun so hard by the MSM maelstrom. You do a great job and a great service for our democracy - and occassionally take some abuse for it by the disgruntled.

Keep up the great work.

user-pic

Not being very computer savy, I didn't even know blogs like TPM existed. Then one day early in the year, I was watching Bill Moyers on PBS and he was interviewing Jon Stewart and Josh Marshall.
Bill said he starts every day by reading TPM and ends the day watching The Daily Show.

I was already addicted to Jon Stewart, and then, thanks to Bill Moyer, I logged onto TPM the next morning and started a new addiction. I have loved every minute and wouldn't dream of leaving once the election is over. Thanks Greg, Josh, and all TPM posters for keeping me sane!

user-pic

For me, it was Al Franken's recommendation that turned me on to TPM a few years ago.  Here's hoping he kicks Norm Coleman's butt today!

user-pic

I wandered on a link from Eschaton during the 2004 election. At least I think it was during that election. Huh. Hard to remember now.

Well all I know is that for the last several years my mornings go like this: I get out of bed, my wife hands me my coffee and tells me not to spend all day on "the TPM thing", and most days I don't actually spend all day on "the TPM thing", but on those days when I do spend all day on "the TPM thing" - I lie about it.

user-pic

I got turned on to TPM by Dan Froomkin who was doing an online media roundup column for WaPo back in 2003 during all of the Iraq craziness, when I desperately needed an alternative news source. Rescued my sanity.

Keep up the great work.

user-pic

Personally, I'd like to thank fogu2 and all the trolls.... they really made TPM like home. Kind of like the "fresh" country air down home on the farm. That is to say... they stunk up the joint.

Seriously, though good work, Josh, Greg, Eric ("clings" and "bitters" aside), et al. Josh has been especially great on the front page. Some great analysis there with some personal takes as well. 2 more months of the Bush Adm. which should keep you guys plenty busy racking the muck. Don't drop your guard.

user-pic

As a longtime reader who has only begun posting very recently, I'd like to add my thanks. I couldn't have gotten through the election season without Josh, Greg, and the rest of the fine folks at TPM, including the members of the community--which really does feel like a community. Whatever happens tonight, I'm glad you will all be here to discuss it.

user-pic

What a lovely post, Greg.

Thank you.

You guys have been awesome throughout everything, including the bitching.

So here it is, Greg - and I wish you'd believe it - y'all are the best. You're better than Atrios by miles. This site is a joy - and the people here are a joy.

user-pic

Thank you all. This site has been salvation and addiction in getting through this election. I started reading back when the US attorneys scandal started breaking, but didn't start commenting until the election.

The whole experience of this year would have been very different and somewhat diminished if I'd not had TPM to rely on daily.

user-pic

A couple of weeks ago, after a few beers at a company event, I blurted out to my boss, "Oh, like 90% of my day, I'm just reading TPM at my desk." Her response? "Me too!"
I've been reading TPM for almost a year, and haven't mustered the courage to comment more than once or twice, but I just had to chime in here. Your election coverage has been stellar. Because of the hard work you guys do, I felt confident enough to bring up politics with my right-wing evangelical Christian parents for the first time in my life. They tried to stump me, and they couldn't stump me! It felt great. Thanks.

user-pic

Thanks to you guys for all the great work you do. I've been reading your site for a couple of years now but only begun commenting recently. Living in a red state, this site has been a real refuge for me and a fantastic way to connect with others.

user-pic

Yes, Greg, thanks to you and all the others there at TPM.

And let's do this up right tonight!

-- ARG

user-pic

I fully expect to cry so hard I can't post.

I'm going to get my errands done early so I have a clear schedule because I've blocked in several hours of sobbing uncontrollably.

;)

user-pic

Just wanted to let you know that I have one superstition: whenever SRV comes up on my iPod (which holds over 6000 tunes), something good happens. So far this morning, I've heard 3 SRV tunes, starting with "Ain't Gonna Give Up On Love."

3 SRV's and 14 hrs left: I've got a good feeling about Texas today.

Here's hoping!

Pax.

user-pic

You're very sweet. Thank you.

user-pic

It's been fun guys. Thanks.

user-pic

Thank YOU, Greg! I know I tussled with you a few times during the primaries myself, and I think we're both the better for it. ;)

I don't say it often enough, but TPM has helped keep me sane the last 7 years or so that I've been reading it, but especially the last year and a half. It's been a grueling time as a spectator, so I can only imagine what it's been like to be working on the inside day in and day out.

Great job. And thanks again.

user-pic

Thanks to you and your staff for your tireless efforts and yur bull dog mentality.
I have been pleased this election cycle when I see TPM referenced by the TeeVee talking heads. That speaks volumes about the veracity of this site and the stories that are reported.

Thanks again for all the hard work and we all need to keep up the good fight.
That includes holding the Democrats feet to the fire when needed.

user-pic

After decades of political indifference (almost apathy), this presidential campaign has motivated me to do things that I have NEVER done before, like make donations to a political cause, slap on a bumper sticker and lawn signs, attend political fund raisers, and keep track of the political pulse throughout the country. TPM has been my one and only consistent resource for that last activity and for that I thank you. The wealth of information and competent analysis from both the TPM staff and bloggers has made me much more politically savvy and appreciative of the entire process.

Thank you for making this site available: it is a marvel of intelligence and technology. Working in IT, I understand the server issues and sympathize with your technicians (NEVER refer to them as geeks!), and I have faith that you'll work out those "new model" glitches.

While my presence will diminish as the campaign winds down and the interregnum commences (my boss would like me to view my workstation as something more than a free high-speed internet connection), I will check in as often as possible to try to keep attuned to the political environment and how to interpret what President Obama and his administration are executing on a regular basis.

Thanks again, Josh, Greg, Eric and all the rest of TPM.

user-pic

To Everyone at TPM...peace, love and brotherhood to a great team and for a place to feed my political addiction!

You guys are providing a safehaven for us and you are appreciated!

user-pic

For myself, living in a rural area, this site has been a god send. I love all (with very few antagonists) my fellow bloggers for keeping me informed and educating me.

user-pic

I need help. My daughter just had huge voting problem in San Francisco, anyone know where I report this???

user-pic

Have you looked at Obama's site to see if there is anything there about reporting problems?

user-pic

Yes, no luck. I thought Huffington had something, I have called our Secretary of Elections and also the actual site where she voted, although I am getting recordings. Their pens are "election" pens, mandatory, and they are smearing, therefore, her ballot was ruled as an over count. When she asked what that meant, the man just grabbed it from her again and entered it. He told her it would be counted by hand but she said he was rude and she was afraid they might throw it out.

user-pic

That's too bad.

The only thing I can think of, Amelie, is the ElectionProtection PAC.

user-pic

The SF Dept. of Elections immediate-response phone number is 415-554-4375.

I think I'll take a walk down to my local polling place.  I've already voted, but I'm curious if there'll be a line.  I've never seen a line there before.

user-pic

Thank you for the site and phone call number too. All worked out, got ahold of them and they were right on it.

user-pic

http://my.barackobama.com/page/s/vpcreport

You can fill out a report at this site or call the voter protection hotline number.

user-pic

Many thanks to TPM for spreading the wealth of information.

And thanks also to my fellow TPM readers. I love paling around with all of you.

user-pic

Thank you, Greg. You guys are awesome and this site is simply the best.

user-pic

thank you, thank you, thank you.

When I first found your site last fall I began to think I could make it through this long election season. I can't tell you what it means....Actual reporting is alive and well!!

Although I post infrequently, I think I quote you all (and Tena and articleman and genghis and....) when my very red state co workers begin their tirades. I see them now as so many
Gotalifes, SFC Wallaces and keep holding on to the facts of the arguement.

Too long post to say too few thank yous.

user-pic

Thanks to you, Greg, and to Eric and Josh and the rest of the TPM staff for all of your hard work during this election.

In addition, thanks to all the posters on here for sharing your insights, wisdom, and perspectives, but most of all, thanks for all of the laughs.

user-pic

Thanks Josh and Greg.

I cannot imagine how I could have kept my sanity if all I had to stay educated on the election was to watch the networks. Without this site, I would have had to conclude that all America was wrong, wrong, wrong.

But TPM is (for the most part) full of intelligent, left-but-open-minded, grown-ups who also recognize the MSM for what it is.

Let's hope in time that our outlook continues to spread and the MSM will start educating and challenging this nation. After all this is the greatest country in the world.

user-pic

Thank you, TPM crew, and thank you, community members. I'm a long time reader, just started posting to vent when I started getting nervous breakdown :)

You guys greatly helped me get through this. Thank you. Less than a day for the beginning of change!

user-pic

Thank YOU- Josh, Greg and everybody at TPM. This site, with its old-fashioned honest-to-God investigative reporting which has broken major stories the MSM would otherwise have ignored, combined in an unprecedented way with an interactive, blog-based format, is a shining model for the future of electronic media.

user-pic

Thanks to you all for real information, interesting commentary, and a virtual connection to other members of my tribe! It's a great site and a model for the New Journalism, and I can't wait to see what bubbles up tomorrow and in the months to come.

user-pic

thanks greg, eric, josh, et al. and the commenters, too! always great to hear your voices.

any TPM folks in brooklyn tonight, we're having a big ol' 'do at freddy's bar, dean st. & sixth ave. ask for benjoya, the bartenders know me all too well.

SI

SE

PUEDE!

user-pic

Hey, is that the place on the n/w corner with the green awning?  Kitty-corner to Dean Food Center?

user-pic

that's the joint. you a local?

user-pic

Nah.  A Brooklyn native but transplanted here to SF in '82.

I miss it.  Spent a week's vacation there last July; stayed in Williamsburgh.  Just couldn't get enough of that delicious slice Pizza :-)

user-pic
... come back tomorrow, and the next day, and the next.

You don't have to tell me twice. TPM has now claimed the No. 1 bookmark spot on my browser toolbar, with Facebook relegated to the No. 2 spot.

Now that's change I can believe in.

user-pic

There's just one bitch I have on this post Greg - you used the god-awful phrase: "a no-no."

That drives me insane. I'm not 3 years old. Everyone uses that anymore and I hate it.

Hate it!

I see it in newspapers; I hear on the news - please stop it. ;)

couldn't let this thing degenerate into tearful poshlust - e.g. bathos.

user-pic

sigh... ok, i looked up bathos, which I thought might be a mistyped pathos, cool word and very accurate. But wtf is poshlust? :)

user-pic

that is a Russian word that I got from Vladimir Nabokov.

It means a cloying sentimentality. He really hated that quality in literature and bitched about it a lot.

user-pic

ahhh. Russian. Poshlust. I hate that shit too. I'm going to remember that word. Thanks, Tena. I'm always learning stuff from you. : )

user-pic

Thanks.

You know, I learned almost everything I know from reading literature.

Literature and law school - undergrad was kind of a waste of time and my public high school was just terrible. Terrible - talk about a waste of time - but then I never went, so I didn't waste that much, I was mostly wasted.

LOL!

user-pic

When I look back at all the things
I learned in high school,
It's a wonder
I can think at all...

user-pic

Oops.  things s/b crap.

Speaking of Paul Simon, just ran across Obama ad from yesterday featuring an excerpt of him singing American Tune.  Highly rec'd.

user-pic

I found muckraker during the USAttorney scandal. You kept me informed - and have stayed on the story - like no one else. Your election coverage has been my "first look" in the morning and my last before bed. You and the TPM gang do important work that has helped change this country. I may have a new boss and work for an administration I can believe in for the first time in 8 years. Thank you for your exhaustive work and for being a port in the storm.

user-pic

You guys have created a great environment for a community to thrive. Compared to other political sites I have experienced, the commenters/participants here seem generally more reasonable and respectful, more intelligent and creative, and more willing to actually engage in discussion. I really think the physical layout of the site and configuration of the comments has contributed to this.

Using DailyKos as an example, the differences in comment threads on the two sites are stark. On Kos, you click on the comments and are confronted with an endless series of identical looking one-liners, which you must open individually to pursue further. And commenters, knowing this, tend (I think) to tailor their comments to sound-bite standards to fit that one-line format.

On TPM, you click on comments and you immediately fall into an expansive area with fully visible comments and intriguing little avatar pics that give each commenter a unique visual signature. I know that many other factors have contributed to the quality of the community here, but the visual architecture is a critical piece of the puzzle. Kudos to all!

user-pic

Duh - I meant to add that the welcoming look and feel of the TPM comment thread seems to encourage people to hang around, look around, and comment at length. But perhaps this is self-evident, as in: "We hold these truths to be self-evident . . ."

user-pic

Well, what can I say? We love you, Greg. This is my first go to site and it has fed my election addiction for months and months. I've always been plugged into TPM, but it took the election to get me commenting. I'm looking forward to watching the Obama Presidency unfold and discussing events with all of you.

user-pic

I just got an email from my sister in Atlanta expressing her anguish about having gone through this campaign in a predominantly Republican neighborhood. I've been selfish about sharing TPM with my family; I think it's time to "share/spread the wealth." Thank you, Josh, Andrew, Greg, Lila for everything. We wouldn't dream of bailing on you now. We're hooked.

user-pic

Thank you all.

The wit, intelligence, respect, and great reporting here are a godsend to me!

user-pic

Thanks to all of you at TPM! One of the finest political sites on the internets! You are all great!

user-pic

Thank God for you guys. I will be continuing to log in to you each day and, hopefully, I'll occasionally have something useful to add.

user-pic

I still can't see my comments on my blog or my dashboard. No way to stop following whom I'm following. MyTPM still having issues. No answers from the tipline and no IT help. No one answers my questions.

I swear I don't know why I keep coming back.

Must be something about all these damn intelligent, thoughtful, interesting people. Weird....

user-pic

Thanks Greg. And big thanks to Josh and the rest o' the TPM crew. I've been reading since 2004 and commenting sporadically for a couple of years (previously under the name Ranchero, which was confusing since someone else was already Jolly Ranchero). I dig this site a lot.

And I dig all of youse. From HyperRevue's cigar smoking, to jzap's "touché" comments which crack me up, to Tena's use of the word "O" ("O God"/"O Please") all the way to the SFC Wallace (whose comments I actually enjoy) and the Fogu2's of the world. Where is that guy anyway?

And as the liner notes in my favorite Blasters album say, "before the smoke gets in my eyes, hasta la vista".

Thanks again, TPM. Let's all chill some champagne tonight.

user-pic

And thank all of you as well, along with all the interesting personalities who comment. I've been coming here daily for REAL news since 2002-3 & Valerie Plame & I don't expect that to change after tomorrow.

I wish I could come up with a whole lot more but we've spent the last four days moving and I'm braindead (but I VOTED FOR OBAMA, godammit!!).

You guys rock....keep on rocking, 'cause we'll always need dedicated people like you.
