Poll: McCain's Attacks On Obama Completely Flopped
Some interesting numbers from the internals of the new NBC/WSJ poll illustrate as clearly as you could want that every one of McCain's major attack lines has been a complete flop:
* Despite months of attacks on Obama's allegedly sinister background and cultural identity, a solid majority of likely voters, 57%, say that Obama has a background and set of values they can identify with, versus only 39% who say he doesn't. Those numbers are virtually identical to McCain's, which are 57%-38%.
* Asked which would concern them more about an Obama presidency, his lack of experience or the possibility that he would raise taxes, 14% cite taxes and 20% cite inexperience. Forty-eight percent -- more than those two combined -- say that "neither is a concern." This, despite weeks of attacks on Obama as a lightweight and empty suit who wants to hike taxes on ordinary plumbers and hockey moms everywhere.
* Despite all the attacks suggesting that Obama harbors a secret and shadowy agenda that he has yet to reveal, a huge majority of 67% say that they know what Obama and Biden would do if elected.
All those lies, all for naught.

greg, i don't understand the second bullet point. one of those figures must be the inexperience prong?

i hate to get OT so soon in the thread, but i just watched mccain's stump speech in florida. RIGHT after calling obama the "redistributionist in chief," he said about off-shore oil revenues (at least i think those are the revenues he was talking about, my son was babbling in my ear), AND I QUOTE:
"... and we'll take some of that revenue and share it with the people of florida."
WTF? what is this sharing crap? sounds like socialism/communism to me.

Barack also didn't get involved with down ticket races for this reason - he might have to work with somebody he tried to defeat otherwise. If he stumped for Martin, or Hagan, or Franken and Chambliss, Dole, Coleman and McConnell won he's got four Senators with axes to grind against him.
Obama will have enough trouble arguing politics, he doesn't need to make it personal.

That's what happens when you run an obnoxious fire-up-the-base campaign even after your base has become too small to give you the win.
Off topic, I'm really going to be sick when the MSM happily collaborates with McCain in his campaign (which will start right after the election is called for Obama) to recover the reputation his own campaign has dragged through the mud. I hope there will be plenty of voices loudly calling bullshit.

Yeah, but the 527 ads gained some traction - just this morning, John King told Bill Press the new "Rev. Wright" ad has swayed several indies towards McCain in PA.
Of course, we all know McCain knew nothing about that ad...ahem ahem ahem.

I don't know - just listening to this on the radio driving to work. He did mention being on the ground in PA this past weekend covering a rally and talking to several people in attendance. That ad starting airing on Friday, I think - King had plenty of time to ask people on the ground what they thought about it.

In a similar vein: Some (!) have said that if we point out in advertisements that the Mormon church is trying to hijack California's legislative process from Utah, this will drive away Mormons who are thinking about voting against Prop Hate. There are are lots of these, and keeping them on our side will make all the difference. Really!

I think this election may be as much a referendum on sleazy campaign tactics as it has been a referendum on the Bush years. If Obama wins, he will have proved once and for all that it's possible to win a national election without going sinking down to the fears and hatreds of the lowest common denominator.

This is the way it should always be. And boy... will that help people!
There was a great vid from P Diddy: Ain't no line too long! (#31) And some people in Ohio should take laptops and walk along the long lines, playing that video over and over. People should take food and beverages to the long lines. They should go and stand with the folks in line. Or bring them chairs! Lead them in song. Anything to help them maintain their courage, stand in line, and cast a vote.

Some will, but Thera, some of them are hopeless.
The Repugs are down to the very last layer - which is the layer of about 25% of the population who aren't totally rational.
We'll always have a percentage of irrational people. But all of the rest who went along for awhile because they were self-identified Repugs are gone now - the Repugs are down to the rump, as Krugman put it - the extremists. Now they will make themselves wholly irrelevant.

Sooo - has MoveOn announced where the Christian baby-eating contest is going to be held on Wednesday?

There won't be any Christians--Obama will be signing an executive order rescinding baptisms for Americans.

Will that be before or after the mass flag-burning in the White House rose garden?
November 3, 2008 10:47 AM | Reply | Permalink
Before.
And don't forget the gay-pride parade down Pennsylvania Avenue followed by Bible burnings.

Why would Obama want to burn all those nice new flags with the hammer and sickle on them?
November 3, 2008 10:52 AM | Reply | Permalink
I thought the Obama logo would be on the flags!
We need a new pledge! What will it be?

I pledge allegiance to Barack
And to the Little Red Book he has.

After, we still have to paint the White House black THEN burn the flags. Bring the boombox to, gotta blast that 50 cent "Surrounded by Hoes" song while we party.

Will the mass flag-burning preclude the need for a prohibition against the Pledge of Allegiance, or should that be thrown in to be sure?

I think the pledge is to the Obama logo. Or maybe to Obama.
I pledge allegiance to our Leader, to our overlords and imams, and to the socialist nation under sharia.

Here's a good one. To get certified as a van driver for wheel chair users, we had to complete "non-partisan training."
As you might guess, there weren't a whole lotta Resluglicans in the group of volunteers. Like none.
In addition to driving, I am responsible for helping my passengers get into the polling place. If I run into any Voter Suppression Assholes, I'll be calling in the lawyers. I'm not allowed to directly confront them. So I'm eating hard boiled eggs and baked beans. I'll just go stand next to them and break off some stinkers. Oh. That's right. They won't be able to tell the difference. Any suggestions for Plan B?

It's getting exciting. I was out canvassing in an upscale VA DC suburb yesterday and ran into some ex-life long Republicans now voting Obama. I had some good conversations with them. Some of them are not only just disgusted with the Palin pick, but are really excited with voting for Obama.
Truly inspirational.
I'm leaving work early to his Obama's last rally about 20 minutes from my work here in Virginia. The rally is at 9pm so I'll probably leave around 3ish to try and get a decent seat. I was at his first VA rally right after the convention. I though it would be appropriate to see the last.
I took off tomorrow for the final push and just to be involved in the excitement. I can't wait 'till the polls close at 7pm eastern!!!
It'll be VA, KY and IN closing first for those that are interested.

somewhat OT, but Starbucks is offering free coffee tomorrow.
Is this national?
November 3, 2008 11:43 AM | Reply | Permalink
tpmgary: I believe it is, yes.
Nothing like having to close some outlets to remind corporate of its mortality. The TV commercial they did on it was actually good, I thought. This is the sort of thing I might have expected them to do to act consistently with the spirit of what was, as I understand it, originally part of their founding mission--to (rather self-consciously) market the coffee shop as a place where people from all walks of life might congregate and discuss civic affairs, what they're reading lately, etc. As if the phenomenon did not already exist in some places.
In our community Starbucks is a place some use for meetings. I'm hard pressed to distinguish it from other chain and non-chain coffee shops in that regard, though. And it isn't even physically designed to promote interaction between people wandering in randomly. If that were the idea I'd have thought they'd have a bar-style counter where you could end up sitting next to someone you've never met before and possibly strike up a conversation.

I actually did the advertising for Starbucks a couple years back. I liked the recent spot and like you, I believe it was characteristic of their mission, but not characteristic of the execution of their brand.

November 3, 2008 11:47 AM | Reply | Permalink
Speaking of positive energy, I live in Chicago and have to drive by Grant Park everyday on my way to work and have been witness to the rally set up and let me tell you it has been exciting to watch. There are about a dozen or so news vans that have been lined up on Columbus drive with the satellite dishes and reporters are now constantly reporting from that area. They have the lights set up high above the park so at night it lights up the entire field, not a small field either. There's this energy and excitement in the air in Chicago...it's so close to becoming a reality! Now if we can only get the Olympics, I imagine it will just as crazy is this rally will be.

The McCain attacks on Obama failed because the American people saw through the fabrication and concoction lies underpinning their every utterance about Obama. It is therefore out of the question that these lies came down in fire as his candidacy will come crushing down on election day.

As much as I would like to believe your conclusion, the polls don't really show that the smears have had no affect. It might be that 5% of people are affected by it, and in a close state, that could mean the difference. McCain is not directing his lies at the majority of people, just the 5% or so of people who are dumb enough to believe them.
Now if the polls asked a specific question 2 months ago, like "Do you think Obama will work hard to fight terrorism?" and then asked the question today, the difference might indicate whether the McPalin smears have had an affect.
