Obama To Meet With Bush On Monday

Just out from Camp Obama:

"Michelle and I look forward to meeting with President Bush and the First Lady on Monday to begin the process of a smooth, effective transition. I thank him for reaching out in the spirit of bipartisanship that will be required to meet the many challenges we face as a nation."

Obama, of course, has just spent the last two years depicting Bush as the disaster he's been and promising to reverse everything he's done, so it should be an interesting meeting.

MMMMM who's going to be picked for his new chief tech officer. I am so excited.

user-pic

That is quite evident...Google CEO.

user-pic

Okay. **Googles CEO** Now what?
:-P

user-pic

That is quite evident...Google CEO.

user-pic

I hope so, the tech industry would love that pick.

user-pic

Not me.  I want to keep Eric Schmidt right where he is as our (Google's) CEO.

OTOH, Eric was the only CEO to appear in Obama's half-hour infomercial last week.

user-pic

If they want a smooth transition, why are they going full steam ahead to put in place a maze of things to deregulate or tie things in knots that the Obama administration will have to work to untie?

Sorry, it doesn't look like a smooth transition to me! Looks more like they're laying landmines and making Trojan Horses.

Whatever bush says, I tend to read the opposite.

user-pic

I'd been thinking the exact same thing. I don't trust a thing Bush says while Cheney's still around to do the dirty work behind the scenes.

user-pic

How does Bush know what to say?

user-pic

Agreed, I struggle to imagine the Bush administration isn't going to use the next 2 1/2 months to leave as wide a trail of scorched earth as imaginably possible

user-pic

It's just for show.

user-pic

Yesterday, when bush was on the teevee, congratulating Obama etc, to me it looked like he was sucking on a lemon.

user-pic

I rarely have nice things to say about W, but I thought his comments about Obama's election were sincere and quite nice.

user-pic

I think Bush is a little worn out.

user-pic

He is morphing back to the Bush that Governor of Texas, just a whole lot more frazzled and gray. These last eight years have really taken a toll on him.

user-pic

Yes they have. He was one of the least hard-working presidents ever. And even lazy and incurious George aged about 20 years in the last 8.

My husband told me when I used to say we'd never get rid of George that George wouldn't walk away - he'd run. He never expected to have to work even as little as he did.

He cannot wait to get out of there - until the last day of course, and then if he was a man of any depth, his heart would break. Because he'd know he was leaving as the most hated president ever - and no more time to do anything about that.

Since he's one of the least self-aware people on earth, who knows how he'll feel?

user-pic

I think he has aged so much recently is due in large part because the reality of his presidency and what he has done (and not done) has broken through his bubble of unawareness. A lot of times he looks (clinically) depressed.

user-pic

Yeah, you can only repress that stuff for so long. I really wouldn't be surprised if he seriously falls off the wagon in the coming years.

user-pic

Rumour has it that he already is off the wagon.

user-pic

And how long will that be covered up?

user-pic

He went off the minute he was elected.

He had it under a bit of control for the first several years.

user-pic

I think you're right.

The bubble around him dissolved I swear to god during that DC Press Corps dinner when Stephen Colbert pointed out that the emperor, who was sitting right there, was buck naked.

He knows now and it has aged him terribly, you're right. O god, I never expected this - I almost feel sorry for that little shit.

It's so sad to look at someone who is a total failure and whom everyone sees as a total failure and who knows it. He looked about 4 inches shorter when he was delivering that speech congratulating Obama - like he finally took the lifts out of his shoes. His pants were bunched up around his shoes.

He's just pathetic.

user-pic

Spare the majority of your sadness, for the countless poor souls whose lives this spoon-fed asshole destroyed.

I know what you mean, though, I keep having to remind myself what a fucking monster this pathetic man has been.

user-pic

O I know, but if you think about it, pity diminishes Commander Coo Coo in ways hatred never will.

word to the wise.

user-pic

Well taken. Pity: the ultimate act of murder by kindness.

user-pic

It takes allll his power from him - that's the why it is healthy that I can look at him with pity instead of hatred.

He is powerless over me - come January, anyway.

user-pic

Like Jack Nicholson in "The Shining"

user-pic

W and Laura are walking the Obamas through the WH to try to leverage a little public good will here at the end of his trainwreck administration. They just want to have their picture taken with Barack and Michelle.

As for the aging, W has obviously been hitting the booze pretty hard the last couple of years.

user-pic

Two years?

Try 8.

He fell right off that wagon before he fell off the couch.

user-pic

Eight it is then.

I was never good at math.

user-pic

your right.

and that is exactly why you can see he so obviously wears the time on his face.

user-pic

Don't let the hollow words of Bush fool you . . . all of these Republicans have learned how to lie gracefully for the press. I do believe Bush will attempt to make the transition difficult in hopes of making Obama look inexperienced.

user-pic

"The CTOโ€™s mandate would be quite different from the Cybersecurity czar appointed under the Bush Administration. Bushโ€™s czar helped defend against cyberattacks. Obamaโ€™s CTO, by contrast, would ensure government officials hold open meetings, broadcast live webcasts of those meetings, and use blogging software, wikis and open comments to communicate policies with Americans, according to the plan."

user-pic

Umm, them cyberattacks ain't no joke. China has been organizing a hugh network of hackers and is pushing on, full steam ahead. Cybersecurity is definitely a growth industry.

user-pic

Not just China. Russia has developed cyber-warfare and already applied it. In 2007, Estonia was hit and Georgia suffer some cyberattacks during the conflict on South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

user-pic

Well... Turkey also has being getting famous for attacks as well.

user-pic

I would love to be a fly on the white house walls during this meeting.

user-pic

I would too, if only to hear the nickname that Bush comes up with for Obama.

Skinny-B?

user-pic

Let's just hope that Bush doesn't follow Berlusconi's first impressions.

user-pic

Yeah I wanna go on this little trip to the White House, dammit.

I would love to hear this -

user-pic

I just hope Obama remembers to use one-syllable words and speak v-e-r-y s-l-o-w-l-y.

user-pic

Bill Clinton and Bush Sr. are now great friends and have travelled the globe together promoting their initiatives. It's all part of the game, and they all know it. Barack is now a member #44 of the club.

user-pic

ps - that "poll tracker" map in the upper right is looking a little outdated, isn't it?

user-pic

That is driving me nuts. I keep looking at it as if it's going to tell me who's going to win the elec-- DAMN! WE KNOW THE RESULT!

I have to stop this compulsive behavior.

user-pic

I agree. There will be nothing earth shattering said at this meeting. Bush will be cordial and genuinely supportive and helpful to Obama. Bush's minions and administration wonks however are another bag of used condoms all together! As Bush (I believe sincerely) congratulates Obama and welcomes him to the club, his ghouls and goblins will be secretly tying Obama's shoelaces together...

user-pic
Bush's minions and administration wonks however are another bag of used condoms all together!

I doubt most of 'em are smart enough to use 'em.  E.g., randy Randy.

user-pic

Bush's shoes have those velcro straps....they take his shoe laces away for obvious reasons....

user-pic

But you have to agree the imagery is pretty good...

user-pic

This is a nice little formal visit between two couples and they will be shown around the living quarters.

I'm sure Laura Bush will be very gracious and George will be George.

This is just one of those things they do = but they sure aren't wasting any time!

user-pic

I would tell Michelle to use the lady's room at the bus station before trusting that Rove hasn't setup hidden cameras in the WH lady's room.

user-pic

http://www.change.gov/
GOVERNMENTAL TRANSPARENCY IS TRULY GREAT NEWS FOR AMERICA!!!

user-pic

Where oh where is our dear IDIOTIC?

I miss him so...

user-pic

Yes...I thought for sure we'd get an election night visit, but it didn't happen. At least not that I saw.

user-pic

Perhaps it would be wise for Barack to assign Malia and Sasha the task of removing all of Bushies pencils, pens and crayons so he can't sign off on all the nastiness he is planning on slipping through during the last dark days of the long dark night that has been his reign.

user-pic

Celebrity Death Match!  Who comes out alive?

user-pic

Cheney vs. Biden is the one I want to see.

user-pic

I imagine Joe is going to have to fumigate Blair House 2 or 3 times before it's inhabitable.

user-pic

What I'd like to see is an Obama advance team take a tour of Guantรกnamo.

user-pic

Oh shit, Jz. That comment hit me in the face, man. Welcome back to reality, self. One wonders how ugly the revelations are going to be.

user-pic

Can you imagine the reaction of the prisoners when they hear about President Obama. I doubt they'll believe it though, thinking it is some kind of pyschological trick.

user-pic

Second'd!

user-pic

I'd like the press to maybe discuss this, rather than what type of puppy the Obama girls get.

(Not that I don't eat that stuff up, of course!)

user-pic

I don't think Bushie, et al, will be doing much out of country travelling when those war crimes indictments start appearing. Remember what happened to Pinochet.

user-pic

Really? Has this been confirmed? I thought Mondays were Playstation day for George and someone just bought him Grand Theft Auto IV!

user-pic

The scary thing is that he has already caused more damage in the real world then he ever could in GTA 4.

user-pic

Remember when Bush refused to meet with the head of the NAACP?

user-pic

I'm glad the Obamas are cool customers with diplomatic demeanors. Bush is such a butthole, and even moreso in private from what I've read - it would take someone with a lot of restraint (or fear/awe of him, which the Obamas do not suffer from) to spend time with him and not simply gape open-mouthed or laugh derisively at him.

user-pic

I can't accept Bush is being sincere here..It's a gesture of PR and bullshit. I tend to think he may be trying to lay down a smoke screen of sorts to have cover. He will be destroying records, creating time bombs, signing off on executive orders and deregulating anything he can get to. For Bush to be genuine here is to think that he actually cares for the good country. I,for one, can't get there!

user-pic

Dude or Dudette! This is protocol - not a smokescreen.

Jeez, people = this is always done. Were y'all raised by wolves? This is just etiquette.

user-pic

Tena: I agree w/ you about the visit and the gesture is always done but I can't believe Bush will do everything to assure a smooth transition. Bush is a frat boy who will be playing pranks like he has all his life. How did Bush treat his transition into the White House?

user-pic

I'm with you on this. It's probably going to be a matter of years before I actually feel any compassion for the chimp. Too much anger and disgust on my part for what he's done to my country and the world.

user-pic

Well I'm not going to air my Bush-hating/distrusting creds for y'all.

But I'm also not buying a bunch of paranoia over what is essentially a nice little chat and cuppa with the outgoing president and first lady and the incoming.

user-pic

Tena, your past no-holds-barred denunciations of Smirky W are not forgotten and have been greatly appreciated by me! And you're absolutely right that this visit is strictly SOP protocol. I was agreeing with this: "For Bush to be genuine here is to think that he actually cares for the good (of the) country. I,for one, can't get there!"

user-pic

They expected the Obamas to bring their children.

Ok?

This is just one of those nice let's have a cup of coffee and look around and get our pictures taken visits.

user-pic

Exactly. I do remember that Laura (despite her stepford-like nature) did say some nice supportive things about Michelle after the whole "proud of my country" dust-up.

user-pic

Bush will realized how intelligent Obama is on Monday. I am pretty sure he likes the fact that Obama is taking over from him.

I am proud to have sane person running this country again

user-pic

Yes, it's been a shame and a disgrace being governed by idiots.

user-pic

You are absolutely right. My friends and Families that are living abroad, basically, confirmed your assertion.

user-pic

I think it NOV 4th was New Year's eve around the world.

user-pic

Obama is to Bush as a human is to an amoeba - as in amoebic dysentery.

If Smirky were capable of comprehending the difference between them, he wouldn't have been the unmitigated traitorous disaster he has been.

user-pic

I hate to be the party pooper, but if you have read The Audacity Of Hope, you'll remember that Obama was quite kind to president Bush. I think this meeting will be filled with pleasantries and hand-shaking. Bush isn't going to politicize this -- why would he? His numbers are at rock-bottom.

http://thepajamapundit.com/

user-pic

Why would they anyway? This isn't about government - it's about the house, mainly. And it is a protocol visit.

user-pic

Awwwwkward!!!!!!!

user-pic

Obama is now one of the members of the club of 44, and I think that means everything as to how Bush sees him. If anything, W wants be as far from partisanship as he can get, the best way to save whatever legacy he has is to try and accomplish a few things on the way out. Meeting Obama is a way to brush up on his bipartisan cred, and get some nice pictures taken for the history books.

user-pic

I don't think Obamas are thrilled to have dinner with the Bushies. It's a ritual you cannot say "no" to. In fact, neither Bush nor Obama will be involved in the transition personally. It is the two teams that handle the whole thing and report to their chiefs. I agree with Tena that "it is [just] a protocol visit."
--------------
Completely off the topic
Guys, this is my general response to the names being thrown around for the Obama cabinet. I will respectfully disagree with the idea of appointing a Republican in the Defense, State, or Treasury because a person reared in GOP ideological cot is genetically/instinctually war monger, unilateralist, and deregulator, even if a few of them are not so overtly on some particular instances. My another criterion is if you supported Iraq war or Vietnam war, you cannot be the head of Defense or State, which eliminates people like Kerry (even though I like him very much). If you disliked the idea of economic equality and Welfare programs in the past, you cannot be in the Treasury Dept.
------------------------
I also hear the wrong echo of what Pelosi said yesterday that we should "govern from the center." Notice she was careful not to say "center right." For some, "center right" still has some rhetorical currency, to be used in front of the press and public. We should be ruling from from "left of center" not simply because we have the mandate but because that is how we will be able to lead the world, not just America. And most importantly, there does not simply exist the "center right" within the vanquished and derailed GOP. Where do you search and reach for the center? We cannot and should not take moral responsibility of creating a center front within the GOP. The far right is far right and will remain so: they cannot be converted or appeased whether you rule from the center right or center left. And we don't owe anything to them. We mustn't bow down to them. You hear on MSM repeatedly that the country is center right. This has been hindrance to our thinking: It has to be changed into "the country is center left," if not far left. If Obama were to make the same mistake as Clinton did and tried to reinforce the idea of the center right, the country would be irredeemably doomed, far worse than ever. He has the opportunity and responsibility to redefine the country as the center left. If he were to move to the center right, he'd have to abandon all campaign promises, from tax cut for 95% through health care reform and withdrawal from Iraq.
I agree with Sen. Sherrod Brown, an Ohio Democrat,"The voters said we want ... a progressive alternative." Even a DLC head does not disagree with Brown, "We have a chance to move from a center-right to the center-left," and, let me add, this cannot be squandered.
To sum up, the center right is simply bourgeois hegemony that must not be protected, either in the discourse or practice.

user-pic

CO-SIGN!

user-pic

When Pelosi says center, it's what the GOP calls far left and what many MSMers call left wing or, at best, left of center.

user-pic

Bingo. I think some folks freaked a bit too much when she said she'd "govern from the center." I, for one, believe her and I'm quite comfortable with that. We've been governed from the far right for so long, until "moving to the center" necessarily means moving left.

And all this "we're a center-right nation" is just bunk. Remember, these were the same people who, among many other things, dismissed Barack Obama's chances.

They are all calling him Mr. President-Elect now.

user-pic

Looking at the results map I'm wondering what is the next best target for a red state to go blue?

Missouri of course since it is a virtual dead heat this time (I like the fact that MO didn't vote for the winner this time breaking their streak).

But after MO? (Which is really more of a swing state than a red state.)

I would guess AZ or MT.

user-pic

Georgia should be the next target. We have the Demographic to back our plan. We just need to organize better.

user-pic

What is the deal with Missouri anyway? Has it still not been called?

user-pic

"Republican John McCain's 5,868-vote edge in Missouri over Democrat Barack Obama and the state's 104-year record as the nation's best presidential bellwether both hinge on 7,085 votes in the state that have yet to be counted. All are "provisional ballots" cast by people whose status as registered voters could not be verified when they showed up at the polls Tuesday."

These ballots are being checked out and then counted. In 2004 and 2006 around half were counted after this check so the odds are that McCain will still win the state...but we won't know for sure until the process is completed.

In addition, a recount can be requested by either McCain or Obama. Since a recount would not change the presidential election and would cost the state a boatful of money, the request will probably not be made.

At least those of us in Missouri kept the GOP busy here and we met our goals in the urban and suburban areas. We cannot YET overcome the rural areas, but that is just a matter of time.

user-pic

Good call on AZ. With it's hispanic population, it seems like it's ripe for picking. I don't know much about MT, but I really liked Schweizer (sp?) at the convention...

user-pic

Just don't hug him Barack...

user-pic

He needs to educate him on Monday.

user-pic

Uh, Laura, honey? Hide the silver.

user-pic

Don't let the hollow words of Bush fool you . . . all Republicans have learned how to lie gracefully for the press. I don't think Bush has a sincere bone in his body . . . still playing the spoiled brat role . . . all about me!

user-pic

Even as we speak they are taking the "O" keys off all the keyboards.

user-pic

I picture Obama wearing an UN translator headset when George starts discussioneering how things are. During the dinner, BO could deliver those papers from the International Criminal Court.

user-pic

OT-based on her comments yesterday, and previous comments re Sarah Palin, am I the only one who thinks Condoleeza Rice probably voted for Obama? She looked genuinely thrilled.

user-pic

Let's hope Obama don't eat the WH food.Strange things happen to inspiring American leaders over the years. Please Barack eat at home the other guy in the WH is incredibly petty & jealous.

Greg, this is the job of the loyal opposition to criticize the incumbent. Nothing wrong here. In all this time, Obama has never criticized Bush personally, only his decisions.

That is fair according to the rules of engagement, and both men understand that.

user-pic

Does this count as Obama's first presidential level talk with an enemy of America? Just asking.
