Obama's Grandmother Passes Away
Here's the statement just in from Barack Obama and his half sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng, on the death of their grandmother:
It is with great sadness that we announce that our grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, has died peacefully after a battle with cancer. She was the cornerstone of our family, and a woman of extraordinary accomplishment, strength, and humility. She was the person who encouraged and allowed us to take chances. She was proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and left this world with the knowledge that her impact on all of us was meaningful and enduring. Our debt to her is beyond measure. Our family wants to thank all of those who sent flowers, cards, well-wishes, and prayers during this difficult time. It brought our grandmother and us great comfort. Our grandmother was a private woman, and we will respect her wish for a small private ceremony to be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you make a donation to any worthy organization in search of a cure for cancer.
His grandmother, his primary caregiver for many years, passes away today. And he's very likely to be elected president tomorrow. It's hard to imagine what the emotional tumult must be like.
Late Update: John and Cindy McCain have released this statement:
"We offer our deepest condolences to Barack Obama and his family as they grieve the loss of their beloved grandmother. Our thoughts and prayers go out to them as they remember and celebrate the life of someone who had such a profound impact in their lives."

Well shit.

I don't have to imagine. I lost mine over 15 years ago. We lived with my grandparents when I was a kid, and then upstairs of them for a while longer. She was a tough old woman who went by stages over a long time, and it was very difficult.
My thoughts are definitely with the family here...

You were lucky - you had grandparents. I only had my paternal grandmother. She was Norwegian and the very antithesis of warm.
But I have now lost my entire family except one cousin who is about 15 years older than me.

Tena, I think Barack would appreciate this....
In 2002, I received my autographed copy of POEMS TO READ: A new favorite poem project anthology edited by Robert Pinsky.
Robert Pinsky was hailed as America's poet laureate for three years by an act of congress in Washington D.C.
My commentary on Gerard Manley Hopkins' " Spring and Fall " was published from just 200 commentaries on favorite poems selected from over 25,000 entries.
I submitted my commentary in 1998.
Here is the poem I chose:
Spring and Fall
Margaret are you grieving
Over Goldengrove unleaving?
Leaves, like the things of man, you
With your fresh thoughts care for, can you?
Ah! as the heart grows older
It will come to such sights colder
By and by, nor spare a sigh
Though worlds of wanwood leafmeal lie;
And yet you will weep and know why.
Now no matter, child, the name:
Sorrow's springs are the same.
Nor mouth had, no nor mind, expressed
What heart heard of, ghost gussed:
It is the blight man was born for,
It is Margaret you mourn for.
Here is my commentary on the poem:
It was a strange flash, I was reciting this poem for the umpteenth time when all of a sudden I saw the scenery of my childhood: the old road on the way to the shopping center; my father driving me past a winery, the autumn trees shedding their leaves, the whole thing feeling so alien and remote, yet also very intimate. It was all so long ago. My mother was sick then. She is dead now, and so is my father.

The Well of Grief
Those who will not slip beneath
the still surface on the well of grief
turning down to its black water
to the place that we can not breathe
will never know
the source from which we drink
the secret water cold and clear
nor find in the darkness
the small gold coins
thrown by those who wished for something else

I absolutely hate saying this, but we all know this will be true - the right wing smear machine will soon come out calling this "coincidental timing" and, when Obama wins tomorrow, will credit her passing away as the reason Obama won.
Obama will then get criticized by the right for snubbing his own supporters who voted him in by cancelling out on or not appearing at the Chicago rally tomorrow (which one local news station here just mentioned).
Leave it to right wing to tear the heartstrings and show any emotion other than jealousy and rage.

My grandmother was one of the most important, influential people in my life. When she died it was one of the hardest things I had to confront.
I was thinking earlier how sad it was that Senator Obama's mother was not here to see this but I have to imagine that she already knew she had raised a great man.
Now this... I send my love to Senator Obama and his family. The love of millions of americans surely can help them through this amazing time in their lives.
I am SO glad he took the time to go see her when he did. He clearly had some sorrow that he was not able to see his mother when she was passing.

I hope he finds some degree of comfort in knowing she's now at peace. But, man, one cannot deny how particularly sad the timing is. Thoughts and prayers to the Obama family.

I agree. He's at peace. And while tomorrow will be sad, he has the time she grieve. In some ways much better than if it had happened sooner.

I'm so sad for Sen. Obama and his family, but now this great lady is freed from suffering and I she will be watching the returns with her husband and her daughter.
Millions have felt her positive influence through her grandson and I am sure we will be benefiting by it even more in the years to come. Thanks and rest in peace.

The Dunham family will be in my prayers.
May she rest in peace knowing what her good deeds did for so many.
Although not the same scale by any measure, I have some understanding of what Barack must be going through. I lost my mother on the day of my greatest triumph up to that point in my life. It was completely deflating and utterly devastating until I realized the joy it gave her to know that her love enabled me to successfully be the type of person she strived so hard to get me to become and how much that meant to her. Bittersweet? Very. But it gave (and gives) me the strength to continue trying to make her proud. I have no doubt Barack will do the same for 'Toot'.

So much of this man's life has been about contrasts, opposites, "good" timing both extraordinary and ill fated. He has managed, like so few have, to have charted a course that is straight amid so much that is crooked.
Toot knows all this, of course, just as she knows that he will win. And just as her life gave him strength her death will give him resolve as President.
A peaceful journey to you Toot.

Unbelievable. The day before. I'm just dumbstruck trying to imagine how Senator Obama must be feeling right now.
To try to push the sadness I feel out of mind I choose to believe that whether he wins or loses tomorrow she could not possibly have felt any prouder of him, nor could her sense of joy at what his candidacy has meant for our beloved country been any more profound.

My sincere condolences to the Obama family.
I know how difficult it must have been for Mrs. Dunham to raise her daughter's child- a difficult task at best.
May she rest in peace.
Aside from all the trash talk about the "timing" of her death- be ashamed.
Everyone just needs to gets to say a prayer for her eternal rest.
And the REST of us- need to pray for our country- and vote for John McCain !
Nobama- sorry "Toots"
I truly hope she did not suffer.

Grammy Toot your work is done, the sun has set and now I mourn.
Before in sacrificial days, I remember all the love you gave.
I softly cry though within, the loss I feel but strength that is.
As sea washes clean the sands of time, the sun sets red just one last time.
I see you walking slowly away, to heavenly skies and endless days.
For what you are is what I've become, the man, the hope, the dreams of some.
Tomorrow too soon has come today, the fight's been fought my heart now aches.
A golden jewel is now set free, remembering what you told to me.
No smaller fate would you allow, your legacy has make me proud.
The world I must now embrace, goodbye sweet love, you're in God's grace.

I remember reading some acidic words by a McCain supporter saying that Obama was going to Hawaii to protect his birth certificate in court and that 'his grandmother isn't really that sick anyway.'
This was absolutely awful. I wonder if the coming election will chasten the lying attack dogs or make them more vicious.

Condolences to all family and friends - fate has a way of throwing these things at people. Once the hoopla of tomorrow is out of the way Barack Obama will be able to grieve properly.
Meanwhile it would be churlish not to note that John and Cindy McCain's comments are appropriate and dignified.
As for those Reps who have made distasteful comments before the news I will cut them a little slack. Those making them after this news are just - you should be mollified to note - assisting in the Obama GOTV campaign. They really are that crass and stupid.

There is a curious paradox that no one can explain
Who understands the secret of the reaping of the grain?
Who understands why spring is born from winter's laboring pain
Or why we must all die a bit, before we grow again?
-- The Fantasticks
In a very real way, the worldview of the future President of our country was shaped by the love and tolerance of this woman. Madelyn Dunham could have chosen to look at this boy and see his father -- a foreign man with a strange name who abandoned her daughter and his child. Instead, she chose to see this boy as family, showered him with unconditional love, and told him he could be anything he wanted to be.
And she was right.
I hope we can leave aside what this or that GOP operative might have said. That is not the future of this country. That is not productive. I'd rather Madelyn Dunham by attempting to see past differences and find a place of compassion.

Thank you Granny Toot for raising a small black child not to fear or hate or run away and hide, but for building a brave man with the courage to lead this broken country as one nation together.
It will not be easy and the struggle will not end over night, but your work done years ago building the character of this unique leader you have given us is all we need to show us the way home.
Your life has proven that one person can change the world for the better. Your life's work was well spent and a blessing on us all.
May you rest in peace, you will be remembered.

Well I'm glad she lived to see her grandson become a US Senator and campaign to be President of the USA and the likely winner. She must have been very proud and happy, of Obama of course, and of the life she lived and people like her who laid the foundation in the 1940's to make this possible and build a better future. Nobody can ask for more.

Amen. Hallelujah. If it isn't divinity then the fickle hand of fate, but it is beyond me why things have to happen in the order they come. Amazing grace, this is so sad. My tears for the deceased, my heart to those that loved her, and my philanthropy to cancer research.
I hope she died as proud of the fruits of her life as she has a right to. Can anyone disagree her grandson is now tested? I don't just hope, I believe that Senator Obama will face tomorrow with courage. I really don't know how, but I couldn't respect a man more.

Can only echo what so many people say. Although it's sad she didn't see what I hope will be history in the making tomorrow, she surely knew she'd helped to raise a truly remarkable person. That counts for something.
I've been volunteering for the campaign here in Pennsylvania, and this will make the final hours more meaningful. Not a believer in sky gods, but I do believe people can be wonderful, and you folks in this thread show that it's true. See you all at the polls tomorrow. And thanks.

My goodness!! I've been out of the house since 3:45 p.m. and wasn't able to check the news. On the way home tonight, I had a knot in my stomach and was nervous that there would be bad news when I got home. I'm a worry wart, but this feeling was very unusual. So imagine my shock when I was watching KO at 10 P.M. and he announced that Obama's grandmother had passed. This is very sad news and My best wishes to his family.
