GOP Rep. Broun: Sorry I Compared Obama To Hitler -- But He Is A Socialist
Rep. Paul Broun, the Georgia Republican who made waves in the blogosphere when he compared Barack Obama's policies to both Marxism the rise of Adolf Hitler, has now apologized for his incendiary remarks, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports -- but he's still concerned about Obama's socialist policies.
"The point I tried to make is that he is extremely liberal, he has promoted a lot of socialistic ideas, and it just makes me concerned," Broun told a local radio station back home.
Well, that explains things.
Broun originally told the AP: "I'm just trying to bring attention to the fact that we may -- may not, I hope not -- but we may have a problem with that type of philosophy of radical socialism or Marxism."
He then added that we should remember that Hitler was elected in a democratic Germany -- but also said he wasn't directly comparing Obama to Hitler, but was just trying to point out the potential of going down that road.

You know, the guy already got elected and you got re-elected. You can ditch the Chicken Little routine.

didn't they already try this during the election and it didn't work. So much for trying to "build up" the republican party...if they keep this up them democrats will even have a bigger victory in the future.

Agreed, this isn't exactly the way to rebuild your brand. When, for Chrissakes, is that fabled meeting where they figure out where the Republicans are going? Right now they are still in bitter la la land.

Yeah, I don't know where these imbeciles claim to have gone to school.
Marx was like the polar opposite of Hitler.
National Socialism involved corporate socialist policies of tight cooperation between government and business, combined with a unitary executive branch, a proactive military and overt worship of national symbols. Sound familiar?

While this guy is a moron, TPM should also point out what is incorrect with what he said, or it perpetuates a lie. IE. Hitler was not Elected.

It’s a long sordid tale but Hitler was in fact appointed chancellor of a coalition government by President Hindenburg who subsequently dies and Hitler issues an illegal decree assuming additional powers.

Wow. So eerily similar to the circumstances today!
Plus, Hitler was a Nationalist AND a Socialist.

Ahem. Bush was appointed to the presidency despite a popular vote defeat and an inconclusive (but probably Gore-favoring) electoral vote, via a Supreme Court junta. In '04 Ohio was rigged. Bush was never fucking elected. Say it again and again.

I know there are tremendous challenges that will determine the success of Obama presidency in the long run.
But I'll thank the low bar set by Bush, followed by outrageos distortions like O is a marxist, communist, socialist, terrorist-friendly nigger who will govern with Jermaih Wright on one side and Bill Ayers on the other.
Obama speaking confidently with some of the most respected economic minds in the background seems sufficient to increase electorate confidence.
At least for the first six months or so, because of these far off attacks, Obama not painting the White House black will be sufficient to make people like him.

And speaking of slow news days, did you all hear National Enquirer thinks Cindy McCain's having an affair??
I'm no fan of McCain, but come on - do they honestly believe Cindy would allow herself to be seen all lovey duvey in very public places while her husband was running for Prez???
Then again, they did break the Edwards love child story...

When did he make the incendiary remarks about Obama and Hitler? It seems to me that there were a series of references to Hitler when Obama made the speech in Germany.
I tend to put Nazism and Socialism in two different categories, although they both are linked to "big government" and the term "socialist" is in the Englidh translation of that political party's name: National Socialist German Workers' Party.
I guess what bothers me about lumping those two things together is the "master race" theme which doesn't fit with most examples of socialism.

National Socialism = looking out for the welfare of the working class, specifically "protecting" them from the "threats" of foreigners in their midst.

I see that Broun used the "I'm sorry if anyone was offended" approach. He's not sorry he said it, he's not acknowledging that the remarks might (!) have been inappropriate, much less wildly inaccurate. He's just sorry, in essence, that he got caught.

A non-apology apology. I'm soooo incredibly tired of that lame-ass tactic.

"I see that Broun used the 'I'm sorry if anyone was offended' approach."
Yeah, it goes along with the "Oh, liberals have no sense of humor," tactic. "I'm sorry I called you a bunch of racist epithets and threatened your life. I was just joking. You liberals really need to lighten up."
(This one, though, returns increasingly with a parallel, boomerang effect: "I'm sorry I smacked you in the teeth with my lawn sign. I was just joking. I'm sorry if you were offended. You whack-jobs really need to lighten up.")

Don't forget this right-wing fringe dolt: Lynn Westmoreland
with his "uppity" remark.
From Wiki: "In response to Westmoreland's comment, social commentator and comic Stephen Colbert referred to Westmoreland as a "stupid cracker" on his show The Colbert Report on September 5, 2008. In the same show, in an update of a "Better Know a District" segment, Westmoreland admitted to Colbert that in the "do-nothing Congress" he was the "do-nothingest" Republican, that he voted against providing relief to Hurricane Katrina victims, and that he advocates eliminating the United States Department of Education. Colbert also replayed the ten commandments interview from May 2006. "

I called Broun's office and talked to a nice guy working there. He was actually surprised when I told him the context of Obama's actual quote. So for the record, here it is. He's clearly talking about expanding programs like AmeriCorp.

Apparently, Broun isn't a student of history. Among the earliest occupants of Hitler's concentration camps were ..... Communists! Hitler hated them more than Joe McCarthy.

Would love to see the President-elect cruise on in to Georgia and help turn the race around for Jim Martin. Wonder if Broun would say any of this socialist/Hitler crap to the President-elect's face should Barack appear in that state... I'm guessing not, what an effing coward.

Unfortunately, this guy is my congressional representative. He caused a stir last year by indicating he wanted to introduce legislation that would ban the sale of pornographical material (i.e., Playboy, Penthouse, etc.) on military bases. Broun's challenger was an Iraqi war veteran and business owner -- pretty middle of the road. He was still beat by this chuckle head. GA democrats really need to find a way to change the political mindset in our state.

And, unabogie, that 'nice' guy you talked to in Broun's office---I've called too many Republican Congressional offices and talked with people answering the phone that have NO idea what their boss is saying or doing.

I know what you're driving at, but I've called enough asshat staffers to know that someone being polite and open minded on the phone deserves kudos.
My main point was to post the actual speech, which completely demolishes the entire premise of Herr Broun's rant.

No, it makes you retarded. Progressive taxation is not socialism. Also, "socialistic" is not a word, dumbass.
"He then added that we should remember that Hitler was elected in a democratic Germany -- but also said he wasn't directly comparing Obama to Hitler, but was just trying to point out the potential of going down that road."
Sooo, we should stop electing people or they'll be Hitler? That makes perfect sense.

These asshats don't even know what Socialism and Marxism mean. They heard which talking points they are supposed to parrot, so that's what they're doing.
"Sorry we smeared you with this hugely offensive comparison. We meant to smear you with this other one over here, since fewer people know what it means."
I'd like to see transcripts--did any of these fools pass high school social studies?

Rep. Paul Broun is a complete dolt on the same order of magnitude as Michele Bachmann and that famed Neiman Marxist, Sarah Palin. How many Republicans in Congress are dipshit wingnuts like this? Let's begin with this moron's hopeless conflation of Hitler, socialism, and Marxism. Separately, if any public policy entailing elements of redistribution were socialist or Marxist, Reagan's earned income tax credit would earn him a Mausoleum in Red Square. There are two possibilities here, and I don't know which is more disturbing. Either Broun, in his own muddled mind, actually believed that he was articulating a coherent thought or he knew he wasn't but wanted to engage in infantile name-calling anyway.
November 12, 2008 4:26 PM | Reply | Permalink
What is rarely, if ever mentioned is that Hitler believed that socialism was a right-wing ideologogy whose meaning had been made into its opposite by ( who else? )Jews. The Nazi-wingnut also believed that nationalism, or aryan supremacism, was identical to socialism, hense the phrase 'national socialism':
Munich Speech of April 12th, 1922
1. 'NATIONAL' AND 'SOCIAL' ARE TWO IDENTICAL CONCEPTIONS. It was only the Jew who succeeded, through falsifying the social idea and turning it into Marxism, not only in divorcing the social idea from the national, but in actually representing them as utterly contradictory. That aim he has in fact achieved. At the founding of this Movement we formed the decision that we would give expression to this idea of ours of the identity of the two conceptions: despite all warnings, on the basis of what we had come to believe, on the basis of the sincerity of our will, we christened it ''National Socialist.' We said to ourselves that to be 'national' means above everything to act with a boundless and all-embracing love for the people and, if necessary, even to die for it. And similarly to be 'social' means so to build up the state and the community of the people that every individual acts in the interest of the community of the people and must be to such an extent convinced of the goodness, of the honorable straightforwardness of this community of the people as to be ready to die for it.
