Bill Vetting Issues Resolved; Obama "On Track" To Name Hillary Secretary Of State
We first reported here yesterday that advisers to the Clintons believe they've satisfied the Obama team's vetting demands and are awaiting a formal offer of the State Department gig from Obama. Now CNN, The Washington Post, the Associated Press and Politico have all confirmed that the vetting issues are resolved and that Obama is "on track" to name Hillary Secretary of State after Thanksgiving.
No Public Events From Obama Or Biden
Barack Obama is holding private transition meetings today in Chicago, while Joe Biden is in Delaware. Neither have any public events scheduled for today.
Report: Obama Could Appoint Retired General As National Security Adviser
Barack Obama is reportedly considering retired Marine Gen. James Jones, a critic of the Bush Administration's handling of Iraq and a former operational commander of NATO, for the position of National Security Adviser. Another possibility is James Steinberg, who served as Deputy National Security Adviser under Bill Clinton.
Verizon: Employees Looked Through Obama's Cell Phone Records
Verizon Wireless has revealed that several unidentified employees improperly accessed the records on Barack Obama's personal cell phone, which Obama had not used for months. If there is any consolation for Obama in this situation, it's that the perpetrators don't appear to have accessed any of his personal e-mails or other data -- the phone in question was simply a standard phone, not a smart phone.
Hillary Still Owes $5.4 Million To Mark Penn
The Associated Press reports that Hillary Clinton is still carrying a debt of $5.4 million to Mark Penn, out of roughly $7.5 million in total obligations. If Hillary were to become Secretary of State, FEC regulations would bar her from personally working to raise money to pay off those debts, though she could appoint an agent to raise money on her behalf and she would have some limited ability to appear at a fundraiser and thank donors.
DC Steps Up Preparations For Inauguration Stampede
The District of Columbia is relaxing regulations and intricately planning out its public transportation in anticipation of a mass crowd coming into town for Barack Obama's inaugural. The District has suspended the requirement for residents to seek a license before renting out their homes, and the city's public transit will be running at rush-hour levels for an unprecedented 15 hours straight.
Palin Pardons Turkey Amidst Slaughter
Check out this video of Sarah Palin doing the ceremonial photo-op of pardoning a turkey before Thanksgiving. As she spoke with local media about how brutal a campaign could be but also how much it's worth it to get out and meet regular people, several turkeys are being graphically slaughtered in the background:
"Certainly we'll probably invite criticism for even doing this, too -- but at least this was fun," Palin says, totally oblivious to what's going on in back of her. This video has that Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker movie motif, of a seemingly serious conversation taking place while an absurd sight gag is occurring in the background.

Sarah: Please, just pardon us and get out of our lives forever!

Actually, assHOLE, ours is to be "A system of laws, and not of men" (John Adams). See if you can follow, though doing so requires a GENUINE patriotism based upon that principle:
1. The law of the land is the Constitution; part of the law of the land are treaties to which the US is signatory, including the Geneva Conventions (which latter also happen to have been authored in the main by the US).
2. The Constitution cannot be altered by the Congress, the Exectuive, the Judiciary, or even by all three acting together. That means, as a side issue, that torture is not only a war crime but also that it cannot be made legal.
3. US involvement in Vietnam violated the Geneva Conventions. That means that involvement was ILLEGAL. That further means that every act intended to advance that ILLEGALITY was ALSO illegal.
Being a criminal is not being a hero.
Too complicated for you?
4. The lying of the US into Iraq was not only itself ILLEGAL, it advanced an ILLEGAL invasion and occupation of a country which was known all along to NOT be a threat. Those who ADVANCE that illegality are complicit in the crime. Being criminal does NOT make one a hero.
Too Constitutional, ethical, and moral -- American -- for you? Ask yourself:
If the truth shall set you free, and the US is about freedom, then isn't the US necessarily about TRUTH?
One does not arrive at truth by means of lying against truth.

Glenn Greenwald explains how so many presidents have felt they had to get blood on their hands to prove their toughness. I would hope for better with Obama and am leary about having a SoS that openly condemns Iran and feels the need to show toughness as diplomacy. I hope never to refer to Obama as "Commander-in-Chief" but only as Mr. President.
So much evidence out there now to show that our intelligence about Iran's nuclear programs have been fabricated that a SoS should be hesitant about jumping to conclusions based on neocon reports.
You know, I would be completely trusting in Obama's judgment except for one thing...his FISA vote. Having no alternatives does not foster trust either.

If they paid off the debt, they wouldn't be able to nurse their grievance against Obama for not getting us (his supporters) to pay for it.
But, honestly, how can that sorry sack of suet seriously expect to be paid for the serial acts of gross malpractice he committed against her campaign? He's like a contractor who says "'Build an addition?' I thought you said "demolition." Oh well, these things happen. Here's my bill for turning your 4,000 square foot home into a smoking hole in the ground. I know the bottom line number it looks a little high, but, hey I'm a top notch professional--you can't get a smoking hole in the ground like that from just anyone."
If Hillary wants the rest of her vendors paid, she should create separate fundraising efforts--one for Penn and one for everyone else. Whatever their divisions, Hillary's supporters and Barack's are united in their belief that Penn should have to eat that debt (preferably followed by a wafer thin mint).

I find this retiring of the clintons debt particularly offensive. She lost in February and should have bailed. She didn't and kept pissing money away and costing obama and the american people money. Sarah Palin's bloody turkey pardon may be the first shot in what she considers the coming war of subsistence, she knew exactly what she was doing.
"By golly, you city-slickers just don't understand where your Thanksgiving comes from. When there is no longer a turkey on your table maybe you will start to respect the good country folk who put food on your urban table."
Every murmur of mockery or indignation will be greeted by her rural tribe as confirmation of the Obama tribe's disrespect for guns, God and and the realities of subsistence. In their vision they will survive because they control the means of subsistence and the urban elite and the urban poor will starve and ask for mercy.

That's bad enough, but we already know with near-certainty that the NSA, FBI or some other federal agency had access to his phone calls, text messages and any other communications sent from the phone.
A whistleblower who was working to beef up security at a major cell phone company (never officially named but widely assumed to be Verizon Wireless) testified that there was a "Quantico Circuit" that had unlimited access to all data on the network. He tried to secure it but soon had high-level company officials ordering him not to touch it. All part and parcel of the Bush administration's wholesale evisceration of our Constitutional protections.
Along with closing Guantanamo, hopefully this will be another abuse the Obama administration ends.

I see people are nervous about wire taps. If you all knew how easy it is now a days. Back in 1998, a directive came out to ensure capabilities existed to properly monitor transmissions across telephone networks.
CALEA.
You can read about it HERE.
The initial standards came about in '98. Since then, the capabilities and requirements have significantly expanded. These guys can remotely monitor any phone call they want now, at the drop of a dime.
If any of you are serious about learning more about this there is plenty here to get you started. I think we all may want to invest in some ACME Tin Foil Hats.
November 21, 2008 10:30 AM | Reply | Permalink
Before I was laid off a couple of months ago, I was a manager for an installation support group. We assisted with initial turn up and provisionong of telecom equipment, including the servers that would be performing the CALEA function.
Once the equipment is turned over the FBI can monitor any call it chooses without telco or the end customer being aware of the monitoring.
In the old days this required a warrant, a court order, and telco to set up the phone tap.

Sounds more to me like the Obama Transition Team got "enough" -- not all, but enough -- stuff from the Clintons to do a passably thorough job of vetting. "On track" reads more like the real vetting has begun.
And why wait 'til after Thanksgivin' (Palin spellin') unless they are still a-vettin' like crazy.

Sarah might view that as "abuse," but I don't!

"Off with their heads!"
Palin did mention something about dictatorship, maybe she's practicing for the day the AIP finally takes over the Upper 1 and converts it into the nect lone-star state.
Think that visual image was bad?
Just be glad we can't get the smell of that place broadcast over the toobz. ...been there, done that, it's not a pleasant place to be without a stuffy nose.
That turkey-mslaughterin' farmhand in the background had a grin on his face, which suggested to me he knew this would go viral and he was about to get about 5 minutes of Palin's 15 minutes of fame.
Someone, please, find that guy and interview him, Tom the Turkeykiller sure looked a lot more colorful than Joe the Plumber.

I thought the same thing, Tom the Turkey Killer was more aware than Sarah about what would be coming next.

So go the "gays," so goes the country.
Honestly, how did we ever survive this long as a country without having made "gay"ness a huge and central issue:
"Look at me! I'm gay!/
"How DARE you make an issue of my sexual orientation simply because I'm gay!?"

Reminds me of.... a Thanksgiving poem by John Berryman:
My daughter’s heavier. Light leaves are flying.
Everywhere in enormous numbers turkeys will be dying
and other birds, all their wings.
They never greatly flew. Did they wish to?
I should know. Off away somewhere once I knew
such things.
Or good Ralph Hodgson back then did, or does.
The man is dead whom Eliot praised. My praise
follows and flows too late.
Fall is grievy, brisk. Tears behind the eyes
almost fall. Fall comes to us as a prize
to rouse us toward our fate.
My house is made of wood and it’s made well,
unlike us. My house is older than Henry;
that’s fairly old.
If there were a middle ground between things and the soul
or if the sky resembled more the sea,
I wouldn’t have to scold
my heavy daughter.

The earth is being invaded by Paliens...beware the sightings.
"...The only thing surprising in retrospect is how aggressively the Republicans seemed to court the disaster...."-Josh Marshall
Pretty much explains the last 8yrs. It's what they rely on...disaster and corruption. They essentially have done nothing but protect the wealthy and their holdings and finally the majority in this country had their eyes opened and said "Enough".
It's why their smears and swift boating tactics didn't work this time. The last time they were effective certain republicans set about bragging about how their "lying" and organized dirty tricks were so successful and how easily the public was to manipulate into believing their gutter politics that the "public" became resentful. The public really wants honesty and truthfulness from candidates and don't like being manipulated.
When certain republicans began bragging that doing anything to win was okay the public longed for integrity and fairness. Once exposed by their own tongues very few people wanted to be apart of this dishonest, party first organization because the issues had become too serious and "Party" became secondary to finding ways to deal with our huge problems.
If Democrats offered nothing but attacks and smears on the opposition the nation would be headed into a civil war or a complete collapse. Necessity demanded action and planning and this is what the Dems offered and the republicans didn't...refusing to change any of the elements that led us into our current disaster...especially tax cuts for the very wealthy.
The majority of republicans do not stand for their stated republican principles they stand for people who hate the opposition. They admire the leaders that bash the opposition...Joe the Plumber is a perfect example, hating Obama and "liberals" was more important than his own economic interests....and he stupidly refers to it as "his principles". If McCain had the same plan as Obama on tax breaks and said the exact same words as Obama to 'Joe', then Joe would be praising him to high heaven...(and vice-versa if Obama offered McCain's plan).
Hate the sinners who won't atone translates to hate the liberals who won't agree. In the modern age one would be hard pressed to find anything "good" for the American people that was done by repulicans.
Selfish, self serving, profiteering hypocrites using fear and hate to gain power cultivated daily by the likes of Limbaugh, Savage, Hannity, Coulter etc., this republican party is more a cult than a party. They have been invaded by Paliens.

About Hillary, I can say this:
We won, okay?
She didn't grab the nomination and neither did we get her and Bill as Twin Veeps. Big victories there, *big* ones.
She doesn't have to do much as Secretary of State if she doesn't wish. Just not be disloyal, and show up for occasional events. Obama's people can cover everything else. She fucked up the Iraq vote good and proper, but I think it's because of weakness (disqualifying her for Presidency at least this time), not some wicked plan. If she has something substantive to add that is consistent with direction coming from Pennsylvania Ave., great. She does have star power, the world will love her, we'll be hated and targeted less with the two of them in the media.
Barack will be able to handle her. She can't begin a Presidential bid for around 6 years, in the ordinary course. Why not make her reasonably happy? Her and all those spite-filled Wounded Women she riled up. It's not the job she wanted after all. She did campaign for Barack, and she told her misandrist core followers to stay away from the Moose Queen. You know, she will be an organizational tool for Republican fundraisers, but they're going to lose in 2012 anyway so they can waste their money however they like. She might be an asset, unlikely to create harm, she deserves this, and we can afford to be magnanimous. Richardson can take some other job.
