Election Central Morning Roundup
WSJ: Obama Could Keep Gates On At Defense
The Wall St. Journal reports that Barack Obama is leaning toward keeping Robert Gates as Secretary of Defense for at least the first year of his term -- which if true would represent a very prominent act of continuity from the Bush Administration.
Obama To Recognize Veterans Today
Barack Obama will be publicly observing Veterans Day this morning, laying a wreath in Chicago in honor of fallen veterans. He will be accompanied by Tammy Duckworth, the Illinois director of veterans affairs and herself a disabled Iraq War veteran.
Podesta To Address Reporters Today On Transition
John Podesta, the former Bill Clinton White House chief of staff and current co-chairman of Barack Obama's presidential transition, will be speaking to reporters today in order to provide some updates on the transition process. Some of the big questions he'll probably address will be regarding when the president-elect will start naming cabinet appointments, whether any Bush appointees will stay on, and to what degree Obama is demanding action from President Bush during the interregnum period.
Obama To Refocus On Afghanistan -- And Bin Laden
The incoming Obama Administration is looking to refocus U.S. foreign policy on the conflict in Afghanistan and the hunt for Osama Bin Laden. One possible element of this strategy, the Washington Post reports, could cause some serious domestic and international friction: Negotiations with Iran and potentially reconcilable elements of the Taliban.
Palin On 2012 Run: It's In God's Hands
In an interview with Fox News, Sarah Palin left the door open for a potential 2012 run for president: "I'm like, OK, God, if there is an open door for me somewhere, this is what I always pray, I'm like, don't let me miss the open door ... And if there is an open door in '12 or four years later, and if it is something that is going to be good for my family, for my state, for my nation, an opportunity for me, then I'll plow through that door."
Report: Jarrett Going To White House, Not Senate
CNN reports that Obama sources say Valerie Jarrett will stay on as an adviser in the White House -- not as an appointee to Obama's vacant Senate seat, as had been rumored over the weekend. At the end of the day the Senate appointment will be up to Dem Gov. Rod Blagojevich -- regardless of whether Obama asked him to appoint a particular individual.
Most Uncounted Alaska Ballots Expected To Be Counted Tomorrow
The Anchorage Daily News reports that the majority of the 81,000 uncounted ballots should be processed tomorrow. The campaign of Dem Senate candidate Mark Begich is hopeful that those ballots will turn around their current narrow deficit against incumbent GOP Sen. Ted Stevens -- and if not, Begich will have the distinction of losing an election to a recently-convicted felon.
NYT: The Southern Era Of Politics May Be Over
The New York Times this morning points out that, besides Republican rule in Washington, another important political trend might have ended last week: "And the Southernization of American politics -- which reached its apogee in the 1990s when many Congressional leaders and President Bill Clinton were from the South -- appears to have ended."

Open door = a sign from God? Alaskans, watch those doors and those hands in the till!
November 11, 2008 10:22 AM | Reply | Permalink
Palin does seem to be suggesting that she prays to god to show her the Open Door. Not necessarily for god to create that door, just to show it to her. "I'm like, OK, God, if there is an open door for me somewhere, this is what I always pray, I'm like, don't let me miss the open door ..." Don't let me miss the door, don't let me miss the sign. It seems a reasonable interpretation that the Open Door represents a sign from god, to her. Of course, it's all bullshit and to some degree or another even Palin knows it.
November 11, 2008 12:42 PM | Reply | Permalink
Yeah, it's "Don't let me miss the open door," not "Is this something I should be doing in the first place?"
Palin might want to put it this way: "God, I said 'putting this in God's hands, that the right thing for America will be done at the end of the day on Nov. 4.' So, that means you didn't want me to be the vice president, right? And, you wanted Barack Obama to be president, right? And, if he runs again in 2012, you'll probably want him to win again, right? Well, if you change your mind, just let me know, okay? I'll just wait to hear from you."

In terms of Gates staying in on defense for a year. I could see that happening. Right now it is extremely important for Obama to deal with the economic crisis and keeping continuity at defense with Gates makes sense.
Both Reid and Pelosi approve of keeping Gates on as well.

I think Gates is kind of fellow that if he agreed to stay on, would only do so if he was willing to act in accordance within the parameters set down by the CIC.

Gates came in to mitigate the Rumsfeld catastrophe; that work is ongoing.
Gates doesn't strike me as a neocon zealot or even a rabidly partisan Republican but as a capable guy who knows all the players and the realm of possibilities in the ME.
If he is willing/able to salute and execute the Obama mission, he could be the right guy for the job.

The Republican Governors are meeting this week and the media will all over it because of Palin. And she is in a catch-22: the persona she developed that makes her so popular with the masses of the far right (conservative populist hockey mom) is the same thing that feeds the negative image formed in the minds of the independents and progressives. What's a barracuda to do?

But there is a power vacuum in the GOP, and you've got a potential leader (who will never reach beyond the base) who is already iconic (thanks to Tina Fey) who is making moose chili for reporters. I don't think she will fade away until she wants to fade away. Which she doesn't.

Whether the hardcore conservative believe McCain is one of them or not, most Americans associate McCain with the Republican party and the conservative movement. Any attack on him is an attack on the GOP and conservatives that were oh so wise enough to make him their nominee. Having read this article, I can't escape the feeling of dread in the pit of my stomach that there's a cache of very angry racists who are clinging desperately to outmoded Antebellum ideals. The supposition that these are also the same folks who were hoarding guns in the runup to the election (and continue to do so) only heightens that sense of dread.
Marginalized fearful people lacking education and packing heat make me wonder if the GOP's struggle for coherence (both intellectual and political) might set off a powder keg or two before someone starts paying these folks some serious attention.

Last night she said Obama will be seen as a wuss if he lets Liebermann slip by. This following her dreadful and shallow "talk me down" B.S. days leading upto the election night and her utter lack of insight or gravity on the election night itself.
November 11, 2008 10:16 AM | Reply | Permalink
Well if it ain't only you, then it's surely not me. I find Rachel exceedingly delightful. Sure, I don't agree with everything she says, but I like that she's willing to take a contrarian position occasionally to probe the left's/Dem's arguments for weaknesses. That's a pretty healthy approach.
November 11, 2008 10:24 AM | Reply | Permalink
I commented elsewhere last night that she had annoyed me for a different reason: by dwelling on the hints that Obama will move to close Gitmo and calling it a pure political power play (or words to that effect) because the discussion was happening on the same day he visited Dubya at the White House. Okay, and your point is--?
And she's still doing the annoying "talk me down" segment. I hate to say it, but I think I'm just not as smitten with Rachel as I once was.
November 11, 2008 10:26 AM | Reply | Permalink
Personally I like those segments. She's doing what we all need to do when formulating an opinion. We start with a premise and then try to get opposing points of view so we can temper (or to overuse the overused, nuance) our conclusion. It's the thesis, antithesis, synthesis thingy we all learned about in third grade philosophy right?
What, you didn't take philosophy in third grade? Elitist!
:-)
November 11, 2008 11:39 AM | Reply | Permalink
Nope, not until fifth grade.
I'm fine with the premise of the segment--it's just the execution that sometimes falls short. She really did start to seem like a concern troll during the run-up to the election, for instance. It might work better as an occasional segment rather than a nightly one, I don't know.
I still love Rachel. Just not quite as much.

Here is an interesting article linked to the other day by Andrew Sullivan on the power dynamics of the middle east:
http://www.diplomaticourier.org/kmitan/articleback.php?newsid=228
Long story short, if you can get past the demagoguery, Iran appears to be more aligned with our regional interests than Saudi Arabia, at least regarding the Taliban and Al Queda (perhaps not so much regarding the other regional interest - oil). But this may be an opening that Obama is looking to exploit.
Ironically, it was Iran that trained and financed the Northern Alliance (remember them?) The defeat of the Taliban is one place, at least, that Iranian and American interests (and Pakistani and Indian interests) are closely aligned.

The disgrace is really to the guy running for the presidency. He picked her in a fit of whatever. She was out of her league, and fed a script she didn't know enough about to extemporize.
Unfortunately, her drive will probably promote her towards a position in the "lower 48." She could be a real troublemaker as senator.

From Driftglass:… "...My Party spent 30 years lying, cheating, and clawing our way to power and calling anyone who stood in our way a traitor.
To seize power we methodically annihilated the very idea of political comity in America, and when we were at the peak of Gingrich-fever, we (were) laughing at anyone who suggested that compromise was a virtue.
And once we achieved our goal of running every branch of government, we proceeded to destroy everything we touched. We mocked the dead and dying of New Orleans. Broke whole countries. Bankrupted the nation enriching a handful of plutocrats. Pissed away an international reputation it took fifty years of skill and patience to construct.
And now that we are falling into the abyss we created – now that all the consequence the hated Dirty Fucking Hippies warned us about are coming to pass – we’d like to, uh, move past partisanship and, uh, all get along.
OK?..."
Right now we need a strong united government to get progressive policies passed. I don't understand how, after such an overwhelming mandate from the voters, the democrats still think they have to cater to republicans who did nothing but spread fear in order to get legislation passed that prospered their cronies.
Haven't they had enough of republican obstructionism and the corporate lobbyists forcing policies and spending that are not in the people's interest. While we are busy "giving" money to AIG and others to spend on bonuses and perks while grabbing as much of the bail out money as they can get, congress will turn around and say we don't have enough money for Medicare or Medicaid or even social security. The short version...take away helping elderly people with their winter heating bills and use the money to party or make one wealthy CEO richer. Took your retirement money to buy a new yacht.
The repukes, these Publicans were busy making as big a mess as possible for Obama to clean up so they could stand around criticizing him and block his efforts every step of the way. They have no intention of helping anyone but the rich. They had no policies this election so they just attacked attacked attacked.
The democratic party has enough division without adding Publicans to their opposition. Publicans don't believe in partisanship as proven by their obstructing all legislation in the senate for purely political reasons. We need to get things
done and accomplish so much just to restore our democracy and our economy without Publican interference...and that is what bipartisanship means to them...interference.

A giggle, a wink and a smile has always worked for her but to intelligent folks, that wink during the debates showed she is an ambitious, manipulating, manizer. I wish the media would just stop playing her "look at me" game. If she were a man they would have stopped already...just look at Romney.
