Election Central Morning Roundup

Obama To Meet Bush Today
Barack Obama will hold his first in-person transition meeting with President Bush today, with a private meeting in the Oval Office. This meeting holds extra significance for Obama, as well -- he's never actually been in the Oval Office before, a place that he'll be getting to know a lot better over the next four to eight years.

Van Hollen To Stay At DCCC
Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) has announced that he is staying on for a second consecutive term as head of the DCCC, a break from the usual Democratic practice of switching that office every cycle. On top of his extended campaign role, Van Hollen will also take on an expanded policy role, as a liaison between the House Dems and the Obama Administration.

Alaska Results Could Take Two Weeks To Know
Roll Call reports that results might not be known in the Alaska Congressional races for two weeks, as the state gets to work counting over 80,000 absentee ballots. The big question for incumbent Senator and convicted felon Ted Stevens (R) is whether those votes are made up more of early voters for Barack Obama and the Dem ticket, or military personnel and oil workers in remote areas who break Republican.

Some Bush Appointees Guaranteed To Stay On
The Washington Post points out that Barack Obama will still have at least three Bush appointees to work with come January: Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke, Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Michael Mullen, and FBI Director Robert Mueller, who all have fixed terms instead of serving at the pleasure of the president. "His campaign's success was based partly on the selection of a team he personally trusted," the Post comments, "but in his first years in the White House, he will not be able to rely solely on advisers of his choosing."

Minnesota Secretary Of State: I'll Get The Recount Right
Minnesota Secretary of State Mark Ritchie (D) is promising a fair and non-partisan process in the Minnesota Senate recount -- but it's going to be slow: "People who are the most active have a kind of bias to want to get [results] fast. Election administrators have a bias for wanting it correct, transparent and trusted."

"Barack" Quickly Becoming A Popular Name
Barack Obama's unusual name might not be so unusual for much longer, as new mothers the world over are already naming their baby boys "Barack" in honor of the president-elect and his historic election. In just a single hospital in Kenya, 23 boys were named "Barack" and 20 girls named "Michelle" from Election Day through this past Saturday.

I guess the question is, how strong was Obama's GOTV effort in Alaska? As I recall that was 1 of the 2 he didn't hit on his original 57 state swing.

user-pic

C'mon SFC, aren't there worse things you can ding him on than 57 states?

user-pic

Can't ding him at all.

He won most of those 57 states... Still awaiting returns from Missouri, but I can personally attest that Barack went THERE!

user-pic

What is going on in Missouri?

I hear about Minnesota and Alaska - but what is the deal with Missouri?

user-pic

As far as i can tell there is just more votes that haven't been counted yet and there is enough to swing it into Obama's favor so they haven't called it yet. Here in NC i think they still got votes to count as well but not close enough to have it still uncalled.

user-pic

thanks.

:)

user-pic

Worse things than a momentary slip of saying 57 states? Nope, not really. That's what is so fun about watching the rightards squirm in the discomfort of being shown how out-of-touch they are. They got nuthin'!

user-pic

Sure...as soon as y'all let Quail off of the hook for "potatoe"...I didn't think so.

user-pic

Here's the difference. Obama knew there were only fifty states and just had a slip of the tongue and said and "states" when he meant "primaries." Quayle really thought there was an "e" at the end of "potato."

Now, if Obama had confidently "corrected" some little girl who told her class that there were 50 states, we'd have a comparable situation, here . . .

user-pic

poor Wally has to cling to something, trying to create an alternate reality for the next eight years where Obama isn't highly intelligent and capable and popular.
I just think it's amusing, since the right seems intent on making themselves a permanent minority, I don't have to care what they say or do anymore.

user-pic

Weren't there 57 primary contests? So, the dig isn't that he thought there were actually 57 states, it was that he mispoke and said "states" instead of "primary elections." Right?

user-pic

So, how was the party?

user-pic

...and no, there's 56.

user-pic

FTR - he said "We've been to fifty..." - then pauses, and mentions three states they hadn't been to yet - "...seven states". So it's pretty clear he meant 47, and just forgot he had already started saying 50. It's amazing that something like this gets spread so far.

user-pic

The only one who hasn't let it go is you, Wally. No one else could care less about Quayle, or Palin for that matter--despite the neverending stream of dumb things she said.
But go ahead and dwell on it if that's all you got--the rest of us are moving forward and changing this country.

We *slap* are *slap* in charge now!

user-pic

How was Election Night for you, big Sarge? I hope it was one big Mylanta moment for you, especially the part where President-Elect Obama gave his big speech in Chicago in front of a hundred thousand people, and a worldwide TV audience bigger than the Apollo 11 moon landing.

user-pic

It sucked...still working for Saxby though.

user-pic

That tells me all I need to know about you.
As a supposed veteran, one would think you would have been sickened at the treatment of Max Cleland by your man.

user-pic

...all he did was call out Max for voting against the Homeland Security bill because Max thought it was more important that Union protection was more important than the bill. Which was true, and also why he lost.

user-pic

...it's funny how any Democrat who served in the military is an unquestionable hero and any Republican who served is a psycho warmonger...predictable but funny none the less.

user-pic

I guess it's "funny" if any real person actually said that. I don't think Chuck Hagel is a warmonger, but then you probably don't think he's really a Republican.
Oh, and Cleland didn't want the department to become politicized, Bush and the Republicans did. Of course, they couldn't argue the substance of the issue, easier to just accuse your opponent of being with the terrorists. Then mindless tools such as yourself don't really have to think.

user-pic

Man, Wally, you're lame. You guys lost, big time, get over it. I suppose the next eight years will feel a lot like the last eight were for us. Too bad...

user-pic

No the question is how the hell I'm going to get out of here in the morning to get to ABQ and pick up my husband. It snowed all night and it's still snowing and it's going to keep on. And there is a canyon between me and Albuquerque. It's twisty and treacherous and I'm not used to driving in this.

Shit.

user-pic

Leave lots of extra time, use low gears going down hills to limit braking and drive slow. Real slow if you like.

user-pic

I sympathize. I love to look at the snow...hate to drive in it. Just take it slow. My guess is they're pretty good at keeping the roads plowed around there and if they were that bad, they'd close them, right?

Be safe.

user-pic

IT's the ice in the canyon that scares me but I'll have to take y'all's advice.

It's not the snow - it's that damn canyon and ice.

O well, I have all day to worry about it. I'm just from Dallas. We don't drive in this stuff cause we don't get it. And I do love it and I'd be in heaven if I wasn't worried about the damn drive tomorrow.

Sorry to be OT - it was a bit of a shock when I got up - this wasn't supposed to happen.

sorry

user-pic

Complete sympathy, TenaX. I simply don't drive in snow. I was visiting home in DE a couple years ago and was in a store about 30 miles from home. The salesclerk remarked that it was starting to snow and I just yelled OH My God! I have to get out of here. I'll never forget the look on her face. She must have thought I was a nut!

user-pic

Safe Drive

user-pic

Oh how I would love to be the proverbial fly-on-the-wall for that meeting between Obama and Bush....

BUSH: Hey Barack! How are you?
OBAMA: I'm fine George, thanks for inviting me.
BUSH: Oh, no problem man -- I just wanted to apologize in person for f**king up the country so bad.

http://thepajamapundit.com/

user-pic

Week didn't start so well for the world - reading the news. Somber meeting I suspect.

We've been bombing Syria and Pakistan and going into Iran via Executive Order. Wonderful.

It wasn't supposed to snow! They said it would be clear, goddamn it.

user-pic

Take it very easy down La Bajada. Even worse going back up to Santa Fe.

user-pic

Thanks.

He may have to take the shuttle. He won't like it, but it's going to depend on the road conditions.

I'll just have to see.

user-pic

Tena, listen to your 'inner Al Gore' and tell your hubbie to take a shuttle or maybe a shared taxi from the airport. You save gas, stay safe and the driver gets more work that helps the economy.
What a great country, right?

PS We in New England are scurrying around before OUR weather turns bad. Doing all the yard work that go put off while working for the Campaign.

user-pic

Yeah - my yard work I was going to do this week before we left. Ha ha! So much for mulching my fruit trees!

No, it'll melt again - I know that. It's just tomorrow. Y'all are sweet to indulge me here -

user-pic

I second the vote for the shuttle. Surely you're husband wouldn't want you doing something that has you worried just thinking about it? And shuttle drivers are professionals -- they know how to deal with the weather.

user-pic

Actually, it's a lot of fun to be the proverbial FlyOnTneWall - I'll let you know how the meeting went after it's over.

user-pic

"Baracky. You don't mind of I call you Baracky, do ya? Well, here are the drapes. Get out your tape measure, heh-heh-heh. Man, are you gonna have some fun here. Awesome job. This is where I do the decidering, ya know. See, I sit here behind this desk and Dick sits there on that couch and he tells me what to do and I say OK, Dick, whatever you say. Wish I could just give ya the job today, got lots of brush to clear down in Crawford, heh-heh-heh."

user-pic

Wonder if Bush is taking that rug he had made for the Oval Office- remember the rug? He liked to talk about it there for awhile.

user-pic

Probably needs a major league fumigation.

user-pic

I think that whole office needs a major exorcism of bad spirits....anyone know if Jindal's available?

user-pic

Heh-heh-heh.

user-pic

I'm laughing really at Jindall thinking he might be president.

Yeah.

Four more years and I predict we'll have gone far enough to the left that those people will look like even bigger weirdos than they do now.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it until I'm proven otherwise.

user-pic

I totally agree. He is way right on every major social issue:

100 percent pro-life.
Anti-gay rights.
Supports teaching intelligent design in schools.

And the list goes on and on.

He'll have no chance in 2012. Here's hoping he decides to run.

user-pic

"Hey, I do exorcisms, but I'm no miracle worker!"

user-pic

Naah. Just burn it. If it were me, I'd get me one just like the one JFK had. I'd be all into this Camelot II thing.

user-pic

Bush: "Hey, would ya mind not standin' on my "ruggie"? Oh, and don't mess with my singing Billy Bass. It used to sing, but I think somebody needs to change the batteries..."

user-pic

You think they'll actually spend much time at the prop house in Crawford?

user-pic

Nope. Purtendin' to be a redneck is hard work!

user-pic

You may be right. Especially since he'll no longer feel the need to prove his redneck bona fides.

user-pic

No. Potempkin ranch will be sold. They are supposedly moving to Dallas - o joy. Why I cannot fathom since Dallas votes Democratic and everyone is freaking out, including his Dallas supporters who don't want to deal with the security issues of having him live there.

I don't want to be anywhere near him and I'm not happy about it. I may just move to Taos for good - between he and Laura and that fucking Lie-berry.

user-pic

You know he's moving to HP so he can be closer to his library. You know, because he does so much reading.

user-pic

No, no....it's not just a "library"...it's going to be a "think tank".....Jesus, I can't even type that without laughing.

user-pic

Jesus - the entire bisphopric of the Methodist Church filed suit to stop that damn Lieberry and still they rammed down our throats.

You'd think he'd know how much nobody wants this bullshit and he'd be embarrassed - but he's not self-aware to be embarrassed, I guess.

I wouldn't go somewhere where I knew nobody wanted me -

user-pic

http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2008/11/10/081110fa_fact_seabrook

Finally, somebody really wrote an article about George W. Bush.

user-pic

Well, Highland Park is the conservative island in a sea of blue. Heh,heh...kinda like Guantanamo.

Ought to be a pretty small lie-berry: one book, a "mission accomplished" banner and some spent shotgun shells. They've shredded all the documents...

Fuckers.

user-pic

Isn't that where Beavis and Butthead went to school?

user-pic

*sigh*'

I know I'm going to quit telling people that's where I went to law school.

user-pic

Crawford has seen the last of W's crew, and good riddance.

Now we need to get busy to change the name of the "George W. Bush Parkway," which is that stretch of US 84 from McGregor to Waco.

user-pic

Oh that's rich Moose! I can just picture Jon Stewart doing this in his best Bush impression.

user-pic

That pic on the front page of Barack and Michelle watching the returns is priceless. Obviously anxious, but relaxed. And it looks like a plain old hotel room love seat they're sitting on.

Also loved all the red--his red tie and Michelle's and the girls' red dresses. What an amazing first impression as first family.

user-pic

Well I saw a picture of President and First Lady Obama going out to dinner Saturday night. It was the first time since the election.

Michelle looked awesome.

I love the president and his wife. Never loved a president before - not like this.

This is weird. But lovely.

user-pic

So did and I and she caught shit for that dress. I thought they looked really great, but I'm a big fangrrrrrl -

user-pic

I saw some footage of the victory speech walk-out on ESPN, of all channels, while at a restaurant. The sound was down, but the images were simply classic. A truly iconic family. I don't think you're the only one in love.

user-pic

I don't think so iether - the whole country - No, the whole world is in love with this family.

Except of course for the racist haters and they scare me.

user-pic

I love that he's going to be president, and I think he's got a great family who will represent us all well around the world--and I certainly want to see his whole agenda passed and am confident that he will be a highly capable president--but I just want to avoid the whole cult of personality thing that we got from the right with Bush.
He isn't infallible and I won't have any problem expressing my opinion and speaking out if I disagree with something. Trust but verify--so far, he's never given me any reason not to trust him, but that doesn't mean he won't, and I don't blindly trust anyone.
That being said, I've never been so happy to see someone elected president, it was one of the greatest thrills ever, and I'm extremely optimistic about the future.

user-pic

p.s. Michelle and the girls are great. Michelle will be a great first lady, I love that she wants to focus on military families and spouses, and those two girls are so cute it's ridiculous.
The part of his acceptance speech where I almost teared up was when he said they earned the puppy.

I think it had more to do with knowing that we wouldn't have to listen to all the nasty smears and lies about him anymore, that it was finally over and we had won. Man, this is awesome. I don't even care that the Steelers lost yesterday.

user-pic

Nobody is going to stop you from expressing your opinion unless you decide to look for downsides- especially right now.

Right now I'm going through something I've never experienced. I was too young for Kennedy, and I was someplace that didn't like him. I've never felt this way about a First Family and I've thought about the personality cult thing and I've decided fuck it- I'm enjoying this.

And I'm going to enjoy it fully.

user-pic

In terms of style and wow, it's Jack and Jackie all over again.

user-pic

yeah, I was thinking that during the campaign, they looked like they could be the black Kennedys--people always make that comparison, but this is the first one that even comes close, and with an African-American family.

user-pic

Hey, has anyone seen the clip of Scarborough cussing on his show this morning? I missed it and can't find a clip yet. Interested to know what the context was.

http://pufferfish.typepad.com/

user-pic

Saw it in real time. He was reiterating a story told by one of the guests who had said his phone call with Rham as a cub reporter, Rham started the conversation by saying FU FU FU. So instead of saying FU, he actually said "Fuck You." He was genuinely shocked to find out he had made the slip.

user-pic

I love Rahm. I love the fact that the Repugs don't love him.

I like everything I read about him.

user-pic

Oh, ok. Thanks. I really don't consider it a big deal. But the dainty doilies on the right might think otherwise.

user-pic

It just shows how powerful words can be. It's okay to say FU, but to actually say Fuck You is somehow awful, when both are saying the same thing.

user-pic

This is why I love Rahm - he sounds like me.

I thought it was hysterically funny when Obama finished up that roast talking about Rahm's half-missing middle finger - and Obama asks the crowd if any of them have had Rahm flash that stub at them -

I died laughing.

user-pic

And how when he sliced his middle finger in the deli accident, he almost became a mute.

There is definitely a value in having someone leading the administration charge on the Hill who no one is going to wonder if he is saying exactly how he thinks about them or the issue.

user-pic

I love the idea of an enforcer between the president and everyone else.

He needs it and I love the fact that Rahm gets things done. I am not concerned with the Repugs' chatterings over Rahm - I think it rocks.

user-pic

You mean, the "half-deuce?"

user-pic

Try here:

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/11/10/81624/313/591/658443

Someone posted it in the comments. He just let the F-word slip. I can't decide if he really didn't know he did it or if he just chose to ignore it.

user-pic

I was watching it real time. He definitely didn't realize for about 30 seconds, then he blamed it on the Ambien. I was cracking up around 8:20 this morning. It was beautiful.

user-pic

We all know that President Elect Obama can handle multi-tasking and that there is a ton of "business" to be attended to, but I am trying to imagine the emotional side of the equation.

The first time he will walk into the Oval Office is as President Elect? Wow.

Perhaps I am still giddy in the afterglow of November 4, but so far I believe the "Bush trying hard to cooperate" stories. We will see how much Executive Order shit he tries to pull, but after 8 years he has probably not much left to be done on that front.

I will be watching the transfer of politicos into permanent positions. Those will be harder to undo than simple EOs.

user-pic

In all honesty, I truly believe that Bush is relieved his tenure is almost over. It seems like the past few months, he's just been going through the motions. I think he's looking forward to going back to a life where people pay him to do nothing.

user-pic

Nail on the proverbial head.

user-pic

Kinda like the way he usually feels when he's taken some initiative that's been handed to him despite his lack of merit, and driven it into a ditch.

user-pic

He is. He never expected to have to work in his life.

I think it's a mixed thing - he is going to miss being "Mr President" since he really took it to heart as far as all the trimmings go. I remember when they were laying down shit for him to step on all the time cause his little footies couldn't touch mere dirt there for awhile. Sheesh.

But I mainly agree he's going to run away as fast as he can. I think he's dead tired of the whole thing.

user-pic

When he first became president, all he did was take vacations. Then 9/11 happened he realized why God had made him president. He embraced the CIC and being the "decider" who would bring democracy to the world. Then that wore off and he is back to wanting to just take one long vacation.

user-pic

As you got about your business, feel free to insert the adjective "Republican" in front of the nouns that describe the messes the Bushites and Reaganites are leaving us.
It's the least you can do, and it's demonstrably true.

user-pic

This is sort of like Einstein meeting PeeWee Herman. I suggest that Barack take a pair of handcuffs along. He can distract Bush.."Look, There's a signing statement!"..and slap 'em on.

user-pic

user-pic

You think "Barack" is a popular name, just wait. There is going to be an entire generation of Malias and Sashas.

There will be a tsunami of babies named Malia and Sasha. Malia is a Hawaiian name - I have a friend named Malia and she was the first person I met with that name.

There will be tens of thousands -

user-pic

Tena: Had a very informative conversation with my bro and sister-in-law last night. They both insisted that Prop. 8 cannot just be made law, that is has to go before the state legislature. He said he did feel that the legislature would have to write an amendment and then put it before the citizens, which I believe is right on the mark as I read the ACLU saying something about it being incorrectly done. They are in Arizona and I think it is the same there also. Additionally, there protests are still going on today at the state capital, and I heard our fellow black citizens don't like getting the blame for passing this (they voted yes around 70%) and the latinos too. I believe if it is not ruled unconstitutional due to singling out one group's rights, that should it come up for a vote again the citizens won't be so caught off guard by the Mormon church, who essentially passed this thing with LOTS of money and phone calls. BTW, there also is a movement to ban all things UTAH (skiing for one), which I don't know is fair as the whole state wasn't involved, but I do believe in banning all Mormon holdings, and there are tons. So, we shall see, sounds encouraging.
PS: My dad moved to AZ from MN after crashing more cars than you can believe. We were constantly having cars pop up, I thought he just made good money, but no, he was the only local doctor and more times than not when they dug his driveway out to get him to the hospital, he smacked up the car. Damn ice.

user-pic

I think it is really great that there is so much anger and outrage over this and I hope the Mormons do pay for doing that - I think it's crazy that one group can influence another state to that extent.

Fucking Mormons.

user-pic

Very good move, IMHO. He is my congressman, I am proud to say, and from every dealing I've had with him and his office, I think he is a smart, capable, principled, decent guy, both philosophically and temperamentally well-suited to dealing with the Obama administration. Plus, he presumably has a good working relationship with Rahmbo.

user-pic

Glad to hear it - I really know nothing about him and haven't paid any attention.

user-pic

I wish DirectTv had told me it won't work if there is snow on the dish. I had to go climb the wall with a broom so I could to the roof over the front portal and get the snow off the dish before I could pick up a signal - If they'd just tell you these things -

user-pic

Just stopped snowing in Santa Fe.

I have one word for you, Tena.

shuttle.

Seriously, you don't want to drive through Embudo, etc......the sun never shines on parts of that road.........

user-pic

You know, I hear ya. I turned on the Tv to get a feel for it and it ain't good - they say parts of 25 around Santa Fe and parts of 40 are bad.

So my husband, who is being deposed this morning in his ongoing war with Haliburton, which he's won now in so many courts that I can't believe they are running up the interest on that judgment and still fighting - just got an email from me to that effect.

He's probably taking the shuttle tomorrow which he's going to hate. But it beats having a tow truck and ambulance fish me out of the Rio Grande around Embudo Station.

You're right.

user-pic

We get that here, no sun hits the curves and very dicey. I agree, shuttle.

user-pic

When the right-wing act shocked by Rahm's profanity they should be reminded of Cheney's fondness for the sentiments of FU.

user-pic

The Right is going to run through all the Faux outrage eventually.

I mean come on - their presidential candidate who just lost is known for his profanity in Congress.

And they act shocked, shocked. Please - are they all 3 years old and little girls?

user-pic

Hey RenegadeMom - it's a gorgeous snowfall, no? - all the trees and bushes are white and it really packs into great snowballs -wish my husband was already here - I'm itching for a snowball fight.

;)

user-pic

see this article on huffpo....

Obama to closse Guantanamo

yay

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/11/10/obama-plans-guantanamo-cl_n_142593.html

user-pic

O my god - that makes my life, renegademom - thank you so much for posting that -

user-pic

yeah. I'm a recovering trial attorney too, and gitmo is such an insult to our constitution and to all of humanity.

user-pic

There are bunch of us recovering lawyers.

;)

I don't know how we all ended up in law school - I think it was the fluoride in the water. ;)

user-pic

It's an ever-expanding club,I guess. Another recovering attorney here, too.

user-pic

That's a campaign promise that I'd hoped our new president would deliver on quickly, and I'm so glad that it appears that he's going to. It's both symbolically and actually important.

user-pic

Ambinder is reporting that there will be no cabinet posts announced this week.

With Bush's big G20 Economic meeting this Friday, Obama has probably decided to hold off on naming a Treasury Secretary until after that to avoid mixed messages.

user-pic

I was reading over the weekend about the mine field the transition period is. If Obama isn't terribly careful, he ends up having to eat Bush's fuck ups -

I'm not surprised he isn't doing anything else this week.

user-pic

The words are deliberate haste. Emphasis on deliberate indeed.

user-pic

Yeah, word.

Well, the American flight with the Obamas on it just left Chicago for DC - I'm surprised they're flying commercial -

user-pic

Yeah, that's all. It's not like he ran an ad comparing him to Osama bin Laden or anything.

Oh, wait...

A unionized workforce was in existence at many of the agencies that were incorporated into Homeland Security, so leaving that in place would have been the default by any rational measure. Your party was the one that believed stripping union protections was important enough to risk the reorganization failing, and thus national security at risk to drive a wedge issue.
