Election Central Morning Roundup

Poll Closings
Here are the closing times in some of the key states: Most of Indiana closes at 6 p.m. ET, with the remainder closing at 7 p.m. ET; all of Virginia, most of Florida and most of New Hampshire close at 7 p.m. ET, with Florida panhandle and the remainder of New Hampshire closing at 8 p.m. ET; North Carolina and Ohio close at 7:30 p.m. ET; Missouri and Pennsylvania close at 8 p.m. ET; Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico close at 9 p.m. ET; and Nevada closes at 10 p.m. ET.

Obama Has Voted
Barack Obama has just finished voting, and was met by applause from other voters at his polling station.

Obama Greeting Voters In Indiana, Biden In Virginia, Then Off to Chicago
Barack Obama will be getting in his last bit of hand-shaking today, meeting and greeting voters in the Indianapolis area. Joe Biden will be meeting voters around Richmond, Virginia, and then going off to Chicago -- meaning that both members of the Dem ticket will be doing their final campaign activities in states that haven't gone Democratic in 44 years.

McCain Holds One More Rally, Palin Back In Alaska
John McCain is holding an Election Day rally -- a rare event -- at 2:15 p.m. ET in Grand Junction, Colorado. He will then greet voters in New Mexico, then spend Election Night in Phoenix. Sarah Palin will vote this morning in Alaska, and is then off to Phoenix.

Zogby: Final State Polls Paint Good Picture For Obama
The final round of Zogby swing-state polls gives Barack Obama the lead in several of the biggest swing states: Obama is up 49%-48% in Florida, 53%-42% in Nevada, 49%-47% in Ohio, 52%-45% in Virginia, and 51%-41% in Pennsylvania. McCain has a 50%-49% edge in North Carolina, a 50%-45% lead in Indiana, and the two are tied 49%-49% in Missouri.

Obama's Final Rally Gets Over 85,000 People
Barack Obama's final rally last night, held in Manassas, Virginia, had a strong turnout of more than 85,000 people. It's quite possible that the whole election could turn on tonight's result in Virginia.

McCain Held Home-State Rally Last Night
John McCain spoke to a crowd last night in Prescott, Arizona, winning last-minute votes in his home state. "We're closing in the polls," McCain said. "All we've got to do is get out the vote."

This Is It
If you are eligible but have not yet done so, please get out there and vote.

NATASHA!  CAN YOU SEE ALASKA?

YES, BORIS.  MOOSE AND SQUIRREL DODGING HELICOPTERS!

user-pic

LOL. Straight from Moose's Mouth.

Sorry, you gonna have to live with "that one".

user-pic

Lower 48, here we come!

user-pic

I have no idea how you did it, but it's as if months ago, you anticipated the dynamics of this crazy election, and created the absolutely perfect username and identity to pull off this particular punchline perfectly.

Well done sir.

user-pic

Watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat!

Seriously, thanks for your kind words, but it's just dumb luck (emphasis on the dumb) and the good fortune to find a cool avatar floating in cyberspace.

user-pic

But that trick never works . . .

user-pic

Frostbite Falls forever!!

user-pic

LOL. Look out 48 states. The Moose run is coming your way.

user-pic

Mooselini is coming back to Alaska!

user-pic

She should just stay there.

user-pic

My thoughts exactly.

user-pic

Have fun tonight and party! Enjoy the celebration and tell us about it. Grant Park will be a blast!

user-pic

...as much as I hope it's not a celebration...be safe and have fun.

user-pic

Thanks, man.

user-pic

Couldn't agree more. Has she finally shut up?

user-pic

While you're partying tonight, be sure to include on your playlist "Barack the Magnificent" by Mighty Sparrow.

And don't forget Coco Tea: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zxn9jhypHfo

user-pic

That's awesome!! Thanks for the tip.

user-pic

Voted at about 6:30 AM. I was already #19 in my ward.
The other ward had a line of about ten people waiting.
Heavy voting in South Jersey!

user-pic

Please stop with the meme that "It could all turn" on this or that state. It just isn't an accurate view of the electoral map this year and makes you sound terribly uninformed the facts or unable to provide realistic analysis about them.

user-pic

I was on stage last night in Manassas! Shook hands with the next President of the United States! Does is it get any fucking better then that!?!?!?

Fired up! .... Ready to Go!

user-pic

Ned Flanders supports Obama?!?!?

That's even more shocking than Adelman, Duberstein and Noonan.

Now we know we can't lose!

user-pic
user-pic

Way cool!

user-pic

Seriously, Ned sounds like one of those staunch conservatieves except he isn't a vindictive asshole.

user-pic

Those are awesome. Thanks for sharing.

user-pic

Nice, nice, very nice. So many people in the same device.
Beautiful. Thank you.

user-pic

Okalee-dokalee!

user-pic

The 85,000 sounds conservative. Still, 85,000 the night before an election in Virginia ain't nothing to complain about.

user-pic

Especially when McCain only drew 8000 in the same town a couple of weeks ago

user-pic

Now is the time to take off our partisan hats and put on our American hats. Everyone who is eligible to vote should get out and exercise their right to do so. I would rather have my candidate lose because of a heavy turnout than win because we citizens didn't care enough about deciding who is going to run our country.

user-pic

In my more than a half-century of life, 40 years of being a political junkie and 33 years of voting, I have never witnessed -- or more accurately, been part of -- an election as historic as this. This is an amazing day and, knock on wood, it will be an even more amazing night.

But let's also remember that this is just the start of the fight. Assuming everything turns out the way the polls indicate, our real job will be to keep the heat on the Democratic Congress over the next four years to deliver on Obama's promises, especially in key areas like health care reform, investing in our infrastructure and green energy, imposing a cap-and-trade to stop global warming, passing the Employee Free Choice Act, and getting us the hell out of Iraq. We will absolutely need to be every bit as active to make these goals a reality.

user-pic

I think a major difference between the recent Repub control and the impending Dem control will be many of the Democrats will not hestitate to fight those in our party from the start, as opposed to the Repubs who just would never say a discouraging word about their party leaders until it everything had hit the fan a hundred times. One of the reasons I was a early supportor of Obama was his insistence that change happens from the bottom up. He is about as pro-grassroots that one could hope for in a president.

user-pic

Word, Albert.

user-pic

Albert: Good to see you. I've missed you.

I also think that the rank and file in the Dem Party seems more inclined to hold to those we've elected responsible as well. So many of us have become activist in recent years.

user-pic

Howdy.

And now there is a window of opportunity where people actually have the hope that government will be reasonable and responsive to the people under Obama's leadership. He has a tough task ahead, because leading the Dems in Congress will be like herding cats.

user-pic

Yup. And we've got to be the ones herding them.

user-pic

Isn't that what we have been doing? It's sites like this and especially the people in them that have helped cause this to happen. It's nice that we are finally putting TV as the low-bar WAY to do politics into a supporting role. MSM now often follows us. I can't wait to keep doing my part, when I can.

user-pic

Howdy.

user-pic

I hope so. I've been trying to get my "Democrat" representative, Jim Mathson, DINO-UT (2) run out of office for two election cycles now.

user-pic

I can't seem to go through my usual morning routine. I feel a sense of anticipation that I'm about to witness history in real time.

Not to jinx anything or celebrate prematurely, but living thru the sixties, thru Nixon, Reagan, Bush, and hate talk radio, today feels like opening a window to air out the noxious RW fumes that has permeated our country for so long.

It's just a start, but man this feels big.

user-pic

I'm with you.

user-pic

Last night David Schuster quoted some Obama staffer who, when asked how he felt on the last day of campaigning, replied, "I feel cautiously nauseous." Put butterflies on top of that and it about sums up my mood as well. Once VA and PA are in the bag, however, I'm sure I'll take flight and soar into the heavens.

user-pic

Re: Morning Routine

I know you're excited, but please, take a shower. ;-)

user-pic

This morning the first hour felt like about 3 hours, then the next 2 hours felt like about 2 and 1/2 hours, and the next hour seemed about normal while I made up the bed and did the dishes. So that's about 6 hours unreal time and 4 hours normal so far.

user-pic

I'm a complete basket case already and it's 6am PST. Don't think I'm going to be very productive at work.

user-pic

And I'm sure Dr Maturin would be the same (h/t Mr O'Brien).

Chewing my nails here in SE Asia, where I'll have to wake up at 6 in time for the first results

user-pic

Trust us. Trust Obama. Remember Churchill: "You can always trust the Americans to do the right thing. After they've tried everything else."

user-pic

You've got final stage Obamamania! Symptoms include being incredibly fired up, readiness to go, standing in long lines and welling up with tears. Your mind may drift to visions of a brighter future and children not-yet-born, playing on a playground. You may also think of friends and loved ones who have passed on. Do not try to remain calm. Vote. Some symptoms, particularly the welling up, may actually increase with voting. This is to be expected. Smiling and bouncing up and own are indicators that Obamamania is increasing. Roll with it. And vote. If you think you've got it bad now, January 20th is months away!

I'm going down to my polling place to hold signs for Obama, but I'm not voting until my 9 year old granddaughter gets out of school. I want her there right next to me in the voting booth. She will be a witness to history in the making that she can tell her grandchildren about someday.

FIRED UP! READY TO GO!

user-pic

I've never checked in on the thread this early. I'm off to the polls with my youngest in a few moments. This is her first presidential vote. She gets to start with whistles and bells and a ballot for the winner.
This is going to be wonderful.

user-pic

Just voted for the first time with my 5 year old son. We "pulled the lever" together. Awesome!

user-pic

Blessings upon all of you on this historic day. I could cry a river....

user-pic

Second that!!!!!

user-pic

Third!

user-pic

"McCain spoke to a crowd last night in Prescott, Arizona".

Does anybody know how many people showed up for McCain? I'm guessing it wasn't anywhere near the 90,000 for Obama in Virginia.

user-pic

Minnapolis: I drove by two polling places at 7:30 AM Central Time. Both lines were out the door and approximately 1 block long.

I'm heading over to my polling place to vote. My neighbor said the line is about 45 minutes long; he got there at 7:15 and we ran into each other at 8:00.

MN Secretary of State believes we will top 80% voter turnout. The Project Coordinator of the MN Council of Nonprofits Voter Participation Project believes we have a shot at breaking our 50-year old record of 83%. The energy last night at the Participation Project HQ was amazing.

We anticipate giving about 200 people rides to the polls today. That doesn't sound like a lot, but one of the ways we get high turnout is reaching out to *everyone*.

MN is one of 8 states that has Election Day registration; you need a picture ID plus evidence of residence (utility bill most commonly used). We also have a program to help the homeless vote. In that case all that is needed is an employee from a shelter, group home, etc. who is willing to "vouch" for the voter. A voucher is a simple, signed statement. Any registered voter can vouch for up to 15 people. Employees vouching for transient citizens can vouch for an unlimited number of residents.

The vibe in the street is real.

Hey Everybody! What song should I use to dance my new dance? That, of course, is the LBJ Slide!

Rock on, people. We're in the mix now. It's happening.

user-pic

Gakk. M-i-n-n-e-a-p-o-l-i-s.

user-pic

What's the turnout in Frostbite Falls? ;-D

user-pic

West 96th Street and Columbus Ave. - upper west side of Manhattan, doesn't get any bluer...6:00 a.m. - line around the block on 96th all the way up to 97th waiting before the polls opened. Hundreds of people in line. My guess is that if you could get a dollar for every McCain voter in line, you wouldn't have enough money for lunch. Even in YOUR town, and CERTAINLY not in Manhattan!

user-pic

I can't concentrate either... between heady optimism and the need to breathe into a paper bag from time to time, work will take a back seat to the blogs today. Where's Tena?!!!

I want to hear her excitement today!!

user-pic

Guys, haven't been out here all weekend, but been thinking about all of you. Couldn't let this day go by without letting you all know what great companions you've been over the last 20 months or so. And thanks to all of you who have worked so hard for this ticket.

It's 9:30 am in MA and I'm leaving work for a moment to hit the polls. I'm in such good spirits, like it's XMas morning and I've been reborn a rich kid, lol.

And here's the REAL fun of voting this time in MA: First, I get to vote for Obama/Biden, a ticket I'm in the end 100% behind in vore and heart; Second, I get to vote to decriminalize pot under an ounce in MA!

Oh what a day!!!

user-pic

Whoo Hoo! Where's the party?

user-pic

Off work, thank goodness, because I've been fighting off tears since 5 a.m. eastern. Usually race the farmers to the polls as soon as they open, but I'm waiting until 11 to try to catch the slowest part of the day. Fewer witnesses to my breaking down and sobbing.

Heading to the big party in Louisville tonight, still looking for a designated driver. :-)

user-pic

My dear husband and I voted early -- felt really good about that, but now wish we could do it all over again. A bit frustrating.

Cheers and good wishes to all TPMers on this fabulous day.

user-pic

McCain already sued Virginia to make sure all the military absentee ballots are counted (AP).

I seem to remember a poll showing majority of soldiers leaning Obama. Is that still true?

user-pic

Younger enlisted soldiers and their families are favoring Obama.

My husband is a SGT but he's 40 and from Chicago originally. He's on his second deployment to Iraq but he voted for Obama last week by mail.

user-pic

To use a phrase I heard somewhere...I am finally so proud of this country. voter turnout all across the USA looks really good. This is awesome. I just about cried as I watched Obama vote. And, while I want him to win, I am so happy to see so many people everywhere voting.

user-pic

Is there a link to Obama voting?

user-pic

Voted this morning. Felt good.

Turnout at 8am was on par with 2006, that is, medium high. Average wait 15-30 minutes. The township is mostly white, relatively affluent, split about the middle as far as party preferences go. If anything, I'd expect the turnout to be less heavy than in 2006 - the dems will be there for sure, some of the republicans might decide not to bother.

user-pic

I just got back from voting in Columbia, MO. Virtually no line. I got scared and was like, please don't tell me the youth vote is non-existent again. But then I remembered, this is still a college town, and nobody is waking up at 7 am.

That said NO ON PROP A and GO JUDY BAKER! ANd Obama, of course

user-pic

The flushing of the toilet begins!!
It will be so wonderful to have America back as the shining example of possibility, optimism and fearlessness. It's been so long and we've missed you.
Thank You......from Holland

user-pic

Heading out to drive people to the polls. Y'all have a great day. Hope to check in a couple times during the day.

I'm out knocking doors in north st. Louis county. Many, many people here got up at 5 and 6 am to vote. We will do this!

user-pic

Greetings from the California coast! I am getting ready to go vote in this most historic race. In 35 years of voting, nothing compares to this day. I have never felt so proud to walk into a voting booth as today.

user-pic

I voted at 7am this morning and my eyes welled up with tears as I voted for Barack Obama to be the next President of the United States.

The most touching scene at my polling place? A younger African American woman showing her elderly Grandmother how to fill in the circles on her ballot. My heart was full.

I couldn't help but think of Barack's grandmother who missed election day by just a handful of hours. I can't help but think Toots went to heaven a day early to make sure this was all a done deal.

God Bless Her. God Bless Barack Obama. God Bless Every One of Us. God Bless America

user-pic

My wife and I are heading to the polls on lunch. I'm going to record my vote using my cell phone.

Today is a day to be doubly excited.

Not only are we voting in a man who is poised to be one of the best presidents in history, today also marks the beginning of the final chapter in the presidency of one of the WORST presidents ever.

My hope is that Obama is just the beginning, and that congress will be slowly replaced too.

Let's get ALL of these old corrupt baby-boomers out of Washington and take back our country.

Let's get our government to work FOR us again instead of against us.

Let's get out of these evil wars and return peace to the world.

Let's restore America to a nation as glorious as it's promise.

I have always loved my country, but it has been many years since I have been PROUD of my country.

Today, I am a patriot reborn.

user-pic

We baby boomers may be becoming old, but only some are corrupt, and only some could afford to retire if they wanted to...not sure that's the right classification for framing the locus of corruption in Washington. Hillary, for example, is a boomer. Barney Frank is a boomer. John Kerry, Al Gore, etc.

user-pic

You said it.

Co-sign.

user-pic

They say the darkest hour is just before dawn.

Reagan claimed credit for the fall of the Evil Empire, and his critics likened that to the rooster taking credit for the sunrise.  In a perverse way, one result of Dubya's eight-year turd is this new dawning.

Thanks, George.  Now go home.

user-pic

I just voted Obama-Biden, Franken, Ellison, and more!

user-pic

Soon I will go and vote. I can't wait!!!

user-pic

As of 7:30am, Obama is +1 in Arizona. :)

user-pic

For all of you who are taking children and grandchildren to the polls: when our kids were growing up, we always discussed voter issues at the dinner table. The voter materials always made an appearance as we sat down and discussed all the things that needed voting on. On voting day sometimes they came with us, but they always knew we voted and we wore our "I voted" sticker for the rest of the day. As teachers, we always talked up the importance of voting and voting knowledgeably without ever saying how we personally were voting.

Today: one child out of the country voted absentee by FedEx, one child out of state, registered and voting there, one child (the anxious activist in the group) in state taking the baby in the stroller to vote.

The moral of the story: talk to your kids about voting and why it matters, set a good example, and make it part of your life as a citizen. Even when your candidates lose all the time, as happened a bunch when they were growing up, the process is still important.

user-pic

I was in Manassas last night, but I didn't get there until 8 pm, although I left at 5 and live only about 12 miles from the fairgrounds. The traffic was horrendous. I would love to get my hands on the person who decided to hold that rally at the fairgrounds. They held it in the parking lot -- so finding a place to park your car was a nightmare. Their designated parking lot for the rally caused traffic to back up for miles.

Getting out of the rally was no walk in the park either, because exits weren't clearly marked and they funneled people through only two or three breaks in the fencing. You got the feeling the police in charge of directing traffic were deliberately not doing their jobs.

user-pic

You go!

Hey, I was driving through rural WI last weekend and saw lots of signs & heard lots of radio ads for Dems. My impression was that the Republicans are finally being given a run in rural WI. Any thoughts? I'm hoping we can flip the Assembly...

user-pic

I just voted for Obama and Biden in Ripon, WI, birthplace of the Republican Party. Of course, I like to remind people that those many of those folks who started the Republican party were progressives who were inspired by 19th century French socialists (ironic, eh?) and sought to fight against slavery. The founders of the Republican Party would be proud of what is likely to happen today! An Obama-nation!!! ;-)

user-pic

Now it's time to Get Out The Vote and knock on some doors. Cheers!

user-pic

I just got home from voting for OBAMA-BIDEN!!!!
The line was AT LEAST an hour long in dark blue brooklyn. My grandparents acted like they were handicapped so we just skipped right to the front of the line, lol. So all in all took 15 minutes, five of which I spent just looking back on the campaign and being totally proud of this vote and this country.

user-pic

There was no option for "That One" on my voting machine this morning so I just threw my vote away to that Obama guy.

user-pic

Just for fun looking ahead to 2010

GOP has more to defend but in some awfully red states. Probably a push or not much movement either way. That crazy old man from the Southwest might be vulnerable though...

I got to my usual SF polling place at 7 a.m. to find twenty people in line already and more coming behind. Its the first time I've ever waited to vote in twenty years at the same address, but in spite of a ballot with over thirty initiatives and nine local offices to fill, the line moved well. Some voters were simply bringing their absentee ballots to deposit and others just sat on the floor to vote when the six available booths were full. I was out by 7:26 and there was no longer a line.

user-pic

Here's hoping for the George W. Bush Sewage Plant!

user-pic

The best part will be just laughing at the conservative mouthpieces as they try to explain how this could have happened. Almost as silly will be the "journalists" who try to say Obama needs to "bring people together" now.

Whatever! I will be laughing my ass off as my wife and I open that bottle of champagne we've been saving and toast our new President!

user-pic

Ya think today might be the day when he finally seals the deal???

user-pic

anybody know the turn out in VA?????

user-pic

Heavy. My daughter reported a two hour wait in F'burg at 8:00 this morning.

user-pic

California story. I know we are not a swing state but here's the scoop from Redondo Beach south of Los Angeles. My wife and I waited in line about 10 minutes and finished voting in 15 minutes total around 10:30 a.m. this morning. We were directed to the "Green" tables for Democrats. The "yellow" tables were for Republicans. 30 people at the green, about 8 at the yellow.

user-pic

Final prediction: O+5 (52%O to 47%M, 1%other) popular vote.

Obama 291 EVs. Obama picks up NM, IA, CO, VA, and NV. McCain will hold on to OH, FL, NC, MO, and IN.

user-pic

I should add it's been fun doing occasional battle with you folks. I wish Obama the best in the years to come. We're all in this together.

flanderz, will you be washing your hand any time soon?

user-pic

I have identified myself with America's largest ungulate, (the one the French trappers called l'orignal) alces Alces, for almost 20 years, since that memorable Thursday evening, and this election has been, since Ms. Palin's entry, fraught.
I am hoping my vote and my wife's will add to a great Obama victory. And a new era for Mooses and Moosettes everywhere.

user-pic

This is a fun day!

My three kids all voted for the first time: one in Virginia; one in Nebraska; and one in Boston. They all reported long waits and tons of enthusiasm. Meanwhile here in Manhattan the lines are longer than usual ... will Obama break the record for winning percentage in New York?

Let's run up the score! Why not?

user-pic

Nate has now McWar at 1.1% chance of winning.

Intrade has McWar at 9.2 and Senator Obama is at 91.3

user-pic

I dunno about droves. I only saw a handful of people there when I went to vote this morning.

I don't think I've ever been so nervous as I am today, I can't even sit for more than a few minutes. Today we stand up, for our country with Barack Obama.
