Did Palin Suggest We're At War With Iran?
Uh oh. More trouble for Sarah Palin on the foreign policy front. In an interview with Fox's Greta Van Susteren yesterday, Palin professed confidence in victory on Tuesday as follows:
We realize that more and more Americans are starting to see the light there and understand the contrast. And we talk a lot about, OK, we're confident that we're going to win on Tuesday, so from there, the first 100 days, how are we going to kick in the plan that will get this economy back on the right track and really shore up the strategies that we need over in Iraq and Iran to win these wars?
Now, it's not fully clear that Palin was saying outright that we need to redouble our efforts to win an ongoing war in Iran. That's what her words mean. But it could have been a slip of the tongue.
Still, given the startling lack of foreign policy knowledge Palin has demonstrated, the possibility that she meant precisely what she said certainly can't be dismissed.

Oh, I wholeheartedly support her Constitutional right to make a fool of herself.
She's a gibberish machine. Take a handful of talking half-points (subjects, predicates, direct objects, etc.), throw 'em in a bag, shake 'em up, and dinner is served!
Wanna parse? Let's go!
shore up the strategies
WTF does that mean?
strategies that we need over in Iraq and Iran
What about strategies we need in Washington to deal with Iraq and Iran? Or did she mean tactics?
to win these wars?
There's no antecedant for these.
It's fun to mock her foot-in-mouth drivel. Her stream of semi-jumbled talking-point fragments can be mined for gems galore!

Huh?
A reasonable interpretation of this:
is that Governor Palin is referring to strategies for winning the war in Iraq and winning the war in Iran. She makes no mention of Afghanistan at this point, so choice of the word "wars" suggests two wars: one with Iraq and one with Iran.
God help us all if she winds up in the Veep office.

I figured as much, but for me, it just doesn't matter. If she actually understood what was going on with respect to world affairs, she would have immediately realized her mistake and said as much. She didn't. So either she thinks we're at war with Iran, or knows so little that she's not aware when she's made a big glaring mistake.
Ready on day one, my ass.
November 1, 2008 2:45 PM | Reply | Permalink
I'm sure you know she doesn't.
You're giving her too much credit. Even if she did know world affairs, her English isn't good enough for her to realize what she came close to saying.
That's not the GOP way. . . . Unless you're Larry Eagleburger.

Maybe she has been briefed on what we are actually doing in Iran (IMO Cheney has been sending in black ops for years in hope of escalating things, and what were the captured Brits doing there anyway?) and just let the cat out of the bag?
November 1, 2008 3:48 PM | Reply | Permalink
And does she make it difficult to untangle the two.
It's hard to know -
November 1, 2008 2:46 PM | Reply | Permalink
She doesn't have any real belief of her own about foreign policy -- she just doesn't understand things a bit. Iran and Iraq are just two of those things her handlers keep whispering to her ears so often those two countries are the first to pop up in her mind when asked about foreign policy. Sorta like Pavlov's dog.

I'm sure if you asked her straight up with what countries we are presently engaged in war, I'm fairly certain she waould correctly point to Iraq and Afghanistan. But, this doesn't mean that in the heat of the moment, her paper thin understanding of foreign policy leads to stupid sounding gaffes. Also, too, (pun intended), this slip shows quite clearly what her default position on Iran would be should she and McCain end up in the White House.

I'm finding that drinking Redhook ESB Ale has been helping tremendously.
In 2000 I was driving home from work when they called Pennsylvania for Gore. I yelled and honked my horn because I knew this meant Gore had won - Florida had already been called for Al and the map showed no realistic way for Bush to win. I was elated.
Ten minutes later when I got home the networks had taken Florida away - and you know the rest. I was up all night watching and getting more bummed out by the minute. Part of me had been bummed out for the eight years since.
I am really really really looking forward to the end of this nightmare, but as a Cubs fan I am not believing it until it happens. The anticipation is killing me too.

This is less valuable as a sign of her lack of preparation than it is in suggesting there's a secret, illegal war going on that Bush and Cheney have let McCain-Palin in on. Biden, Clinton(s), Gore should hit this hard -- what is this war in Iran? what are we doing over there? does Congress know about this? do the people? -- until she has to confess to making a mistake.

This went around a while back with Bush as the butt of the joke, but it works just as well with Palin.
While suturing a cut on the hand of a 75-year-old Texas rancher whose hand was caught in a gate while working cattle, the doctor struck up a conversation with the old man. Eventually the topic got around to Sarah Palin and her bid to be a heartbeat away from being President.
The old rancher said, "Well, ya know, Palin is a post turtle."
Not being familiar with the term, the doctor asked him what a post turtle was.
The old rancher said, "When you're driving down a country road and you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that's a post turtle."
The old rancher saw a puzzled look on the doctor's face, so he continued to explain. "You know she didn't get up there by herself, she doesn't belong up there, she doesn't know what to do while she is up there, and you just wonder what kind of dumb ass put her up there to begin with."
