Dems Pick Up At Least 19 House Seats As Dem Coalition Expands Across Country

So how did Dems fare in the House races? Dems have made a net gain of 19 seats so far, with a few races still too close to call.

The big Democratic gains were largely fueled by Barack Obama's successes in expanding the Democratic coalition across the country. These shifts were driven by increased minority turnout, as well as growing Dem margins among groups like Hispanics, blue-collar and college-educated whites, and suburban voters inclined to vote Republican in local races but who turned Dem because of the economy.

For example, Democratic gains among Hispanics may have been decisive in House pickups in Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Nevada, and economic jitters did a lot to unseat GOP incumbents or pick up open seats in Alabama, Florida and Pennsylvania, among others.

Our rundown on the state of play in the House races is after the jump.

The Dems defeated 13 GOP incumbents: Marilyn Musgrave of Colorado, Christopher Shays of Connecticut, Ric Keller and Tom Feeney of Florida, Bill Sali of Idaho, Tim Walberg and Joe Knollenberg of Michigan, Jon Porter of Nevada, Randy Kuhl of New York, Robin "Liberals Hate Real Americans" Hayes from North Carolina, Steve Chabot of Ohio, Phil English of Pennsylvania, and Thelma Drake of Virginia.

The Dems also captured 10 open GOP-held seats, in races declared so far: The open seat of Rep. Terry Everett of Alabama, Rick Renzi of Arizona, Jerry Weller of Illinois, Jim Saxton of New Jersey, Heather Wilson and Steve Pearce of New Mexico, Jim Walsh and Vito Fossella of New York, Ralph Regula of Ohio, and Tom Davis of Virginia.

Four Democratic incumbents went down to defeat, all of them freshman gains from 2006 or in one case a special-election pickup: Nancy Boyda of Kansas; Don Cazayoux of Louisiana, Nick Lampson of Texas, and the scandal-plagued Tim Mahoney of Florida. No other Dem-held seats were lost to the GOP.

That brings the Democrats to a net gain of +19 so far, with a few more seats still up in the air:

It appears that Rep. Virgil Goode (R-VA), best known for denouncing the election of Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) as the first Muslim Congressman, may have been defeated in a huge upset. With 100% of precincts reporting, Democratic challenge Tom Perriello leads by 561 votes.

Rep. Dave Reichert (R-WA) is locked in a tight rematch with his 2006 opponent Darcy Burner. With 41% of precincts reporting, Reichert leads by 881 votes.

In the open deep-red seat of Rep. Wayne Gilchrest (R-MD) -- a moderate who was defeated in his primary by right-winger Andy Harris, and then went on to campaign for Democratic nominee Frank Kratovil -- this race is still undecided. Kratovil currently leads by 900 about votes, which would make for a huge upset if it holds up.

In the open seat of Rep. John Doolittle (R-WA), GOP nominee Tom McClintock has a narrow lead of 451 votes with 100% reporting.

Late Update: Since we first published this post, CNN and NBC have projected that Rep. Bill Sali (R-ID), who was originally on our list of close races, has been defeated. We have edited the post to reflect this.

Iam not so happy about some of the senate or house results else where, but in my home state of NC, we kicked some ass.

Mentioned earlier but bears repeating:

No republican representatives in New England.

Wow.

user-pic

Where can I move to there???

Hey Eric - Josh and you and Greg and your technical advisors -

the site deserves mad props for actually starting to work better yesterday in the face of the traffic than it has with lower traffic lately.

I don't know what y'all did - but keep it up. My comments are now loading pretty damn quickly, and I get many fewer error messages.

i second that.

user-pic

Third--I've been noticing the same things.

Fourth.

Fucking Bachman is back though. Further proof that rich asshole Republicans will vote for a completely whacko Christian fundy Repbulican when it comes down to it- no matter how much their nutty views might offend their sensibilities.
They may dispise her but they'll still vote for her. Fucking Repugs. We've got more work to do.

Joseph - you're missing the big picture here - she is going to be too much fun for the next however many years she has left in her term.

She is going to be prime comic relief.

;)

^C^V

She probably could have sat back quietly and muddled through if she hadn't gone on Tweetie's show and mad quite such an ass of herself. Now that the milk is spilled, the skewers and roasting spits are being readied to make her look like such a fool she'll have to hide under her lectern :-)

*ahem* mad=made

user-pic

No, she'll be a chuckle. Stevens and Young will keep the comedy clubs filled. What a way to keep your party looking like the corrupt ones.....

comic relief that makes Minnesotans look like fucking idiots. I'm not happy about this, I'm not happy about Prop 8, I'm still not happy with the direction this country is headed in. I am super relieved Obama is in office to change this. I happy as hell as to what the future holds, but I am extremely disappointed in where we are right now, especially in MN. Very disappointed in MN.

user-pic

I totally agree with everything you said.

They just called Idaho for Minnick a few minutes ago.

At the risk of being redundant: Wooooooooo Hoooooooooo! (but I guess we'll have to forgo the untapped resource of "tree oil" because Sali is the only one on the planet who knows how to extract it).

Bad news from VA. Goode now UP by 145 votes with 100% in. Not Goode!!!!

user-pic

Given that, Virginia now has two Democrat Senators, a Democrat Governor and just voted blue for President. We picked up Glenn Nye in VA-02 and sent Thelma "Bush Rubber Stamp" Drake packing. Would have loved to see Goode go but Virginia has come a long, loooonnnngggg way!

user-pic

Hate the Drake.

The Dems defeated 12 GOP incumbents

That should be 13 now that the Idaho voters have decided to lay down Sali.

In the open seat of Rep. John Doolittle (R-WA)...

That should be R-CA.  Results from the CA-04 district can be found here:  http://vote.sos.ca.gov/usrep/0459.htm

As of 11/5 Wed 11:38 a.m. PST, McClintock's (R) lead over Brown (D) was holding steady at 451 votes.
