Christopher Shays, New England's Last House Republican, Goes Down
New England is now a House Republican-free zone, with Rep. Christopher Shays (R-CT) defeated by Democrat Jim Himes after 22 years in the House. After the 2006 elections, Shays was the last House Republican left from the six New England states.
Shays was an economic conservative and social liberal, a good fit for his district in many ways. But what killed him in the end was his staunch support for the Iraq War, and the full realignment of New England to the Dems.
And just to sweeten the deal: Shays is a good friend and political ally of Joe Lieberman.

The GOP is now a regional and will probably become a much more extreme party. Welcome to irrelevance jokers. Time to work your way out of the wilderness.

Other than Dole, this is the only strong "statement" so far. Or are there others? I mean rebukes so clear that big media has to acknowledge that the right has been strongly rebuked.
Otherwise we are going to have to listen to centrist pablum about how Obama has to take care not to be held hostage by Pelosi and Reid.

McConnell was close, as is Chambliss - closer expected weeks ago - however all look like they'll go Republican.

Born in Chicago...raised in Boston.........this couldnt make me ANY happier.
BUT to be honest, you dont get much republican nonsense in the NE areas, aside from that bastardization of Liberman. I cant think of a Republican that I would lump with the crazy neo-con or heavy religious conservative crowd.
But seeing it all go deep Dem......leaves a smile on my face.
Good job Beantown and the surrounding states/cities!

Did anyone else notice, MSNBC electoral votes had Obama at 277, before Iowa came in? Not that the results are in doubt, but before Iowa he was at 200.
Add CA, WA, OR and HI and you get their 277. When the camera closed in on Todd, someone in the booth must have noticed and had them roll it back to 200.

Yup. I've emailed his office three times and always gotten a non-boilerplate reply. He votes based on his best judgment. I will of course welcome Hines, he sounds quite capable. His only fault was to go negative in a way that I do not think resonates here, but you cannot deny the results.

All the northeast republicans became extinct because their own party went so far to the right it left them without any cover, same for that Senator from Rhode Island Chafee.

I worked for Himes this summer, one of the most down to earth great individuals that i have campaigned for. He took a lot of time to get to know all of us that eventually lead to his ELECTION! CT is well deserved to have Jim Himes as it's next Congressmen.

The end of Republicans in New England's Congressional body is the direct result of Nixon's Southern strategy. When the Republicans sold their soul to pander to racism and integrate George Wallace's movement, this was bound to happen. Once Wallace's ideas were incorporated into the Republican it began to eat away at the inside of the Republican party and destroyed all that disagreed with it. Now, we have a Republican party that is without any moral foundation. Just look at the transformation of John McCain. Look at those parts of the old John McCain that he had to discard in order to be the nominee and hold the base of the party. Look at the unease he could not hide when the hate driven politics came to the surface in his rallies.
