Cheney: "The Right Leader For This Moment In History Is Senator John McCain"
It isn't every day that the Obama campaign alerts reporters to a glowing endorsement of McCain, but Dick Cheney -- he of the approval rating in the teens -- is another matter.
So the Obama camp was quick to blast out to the press this vid of Cheney saying today that "the right leader for this moment in history is Senator John McCain":
Cheney's claim that McCain is the "right leader" for this particular moment is particularly interesting in light of the Arizona Senator's recent claim that he was "terribly disappointed" with the Bush administration on the economy and in light of his call for a "clean break" with the admin on energy. It'll be interesting to see if the McCain press operation highlights this particular endorsement.
Late Update: To be a bit clearer, either Cheney doesn't believe McCain's claims that he represents a change from Bush-Cheney policies, or Cheney thinks that a clean break from his own policies is what's called for right now. The latter doesn't seem terribly likely.

I'm John McCain and i approve this message.

I'm glad they jumped on this. I was hoping they would, when I saw the headline at The Page.

Cheney makes his home in Wilson WY (outside Jackson Hole) so it makes some sense that they would try an appearance somewhat off the National Radar there.
Bush is literally hiding-out between the White House and Camp David - So the National "leaders" of the GOP are either trying to stay away from their own Campaigners and/or they're bailing like mad trying to save the ship or they've already jumped out (trying to save their own reputations).
Seems to me that the conservative "intellectuals" are largely abandoned by their own rank-and-file,
while those "base" republicans want to make the Palin's & Plumbers the new voice of their movement; I fully expect a full throated backlash from these reactionary forces once Obama has won the election (as we should all expect that he will...) However, I don't think the "elites" of the GOP will be all that interested in attaching themselves to a movement led by racists and jingoists.
We have the Opportunity here to build a New Majority of our Own and Leave these Relics of a Dead Ideology somewhere in the last Century.
ps - where in CT are you from? I am from Westport.

I stopped at the grocery store on my way home from work last night and standing just inside the door was a sales clerk dressed up as a witch and another one dressed up as Darth Vader. I walked up to Darth and I said, "Cheney, is that you?". All of the people around me started laughing their asses off.
The county I live in is about as red as it can be. It's nice to know that there are people who are paying attention.

Wow. Cheney still expects that he can make people flinch.

But when did he do this? Look into the face of evil and not flinch?
When he was a POW and was broken? Is that "not flinching"?
And normally I wouldn't mention what McCain did to survive as a POW, but Cheney just put it right out there. As McCain has, as well. Not that anyone could ever use it, but I wonder if the American public knows that John McCain was broken as a prisoner?

Totally agree.
You can talk about that, darlin. It's not a sacred cow, no matter how much some want it to be.
I know you read the Rolling Stone article - his career in the military, including his time in Hanoi, was a long goddamn way from honorable.

I don't like referring to his POW experience because I really don't feel it's my place to judge his behavior.
You do what you need to do. Period. Whether that's refusing to cooperate, or cooperating. People never in that situation shouldn't be judging him.
It's the constant hypocrisy surrounding his experience that bothers me, particularly when his campaign tries to paint Obama as some sort of appeaser. But what else is new?

I completely agree, CT. I don't judge him for what he did. I judge him for trying to paint it otherwise than it was.
That's where he went wrong -

Cheney isn't looking too healthy. Hard to believe he is only 5 years older than W. He looks about the same age as the elder Bush.
I promise a raucous wake at my place the day his ticker is no longer able to take licking.

can anybody remember the last time an incumbent president and vice president remained so hidden while a member of their own party was trying to succeed them?
Perhaps Clinton when Gore ran in 2000, Gore made the fatal mistake of not running on Clinton's successful track record. But I don't think Clinton disappeared, did he?
It's really remarkable how little you see and hear of Bush/Cheney while McCain is running!

I was trying think of what Cheney meant by McCain looking "evil in the face without flinching" and the first that came to mind was that the two of them must have, at some point, made eye contact on the Senate floor.
