Begich Expanding Lead Over Stevens -- Little By Little
Some more ballots have been counted in the exhausting Alaska Senate race, with Democrat Mark Begich's lead over GOP Senator and convicted felon Ted Stevens increasing just a little bit more.
Begich's lead has gone from 814 votes to 1,022 votes. In terms of percentage, Begich leads by 0.35%. If his lead gets up to 0.5% or higher, there will not be a state-paid recount. Over 14,000 more votes have been counted, with about 30,000 left to go -- and that process will take us into some time next week.
The Anchorage Daily News points out that some of these new ballots have come from the Mat-Su area, the right-wing stronghold that gave us Sarah Palin -- so the fact that Begich's lead is still going up is a very bad sign for the incumbent Republican. Not only is the pool of remaining votes shrinking, but Stevens is running out of GOP areas that could put him over the top.

I'm seeing Ted's new career as a Fox pundit in a month or two... maybe, y'know, in the model of Andy Rooney, only older, crankier and meaner... and thus, to his bewilderment, incredibly funny.

I agree with you about the gig - but Andy Rooney is actually older than Stevens - Rooney will be 90 on his next birthday in January.

Of course, for his segments they'd have to have a video feed from whichever federal prison he ends up in.

Ted's grasp on reality is too strong for him to be a Fox News pundit.

I want Stevens to challenge Sarah Palin in GOP primary for Governor. She asked him to step down, so its time for some revenge. Stevens for Governor of Alaska!

Only if that helps the Palin 2012 Presidential bid.

I'm sure many Republicans are whispering among themselves they wish Ted Stevens ends up losing so they can be spared the drawn-out process of having to expell him from the Senate and all the media circus, etc. that would entail -- not to speak of further embarrassment to the GOP.

I'd guess the goopers are more in "any port in a storm" mode, maya89.
Note that Diaper Dave Vitter is still a Republican Senator in good, if squishy, standing.

Still, Sen. "Footsy Morse Code" Craig's legal defense fund remains under $5,000.
So, for some things are still looking -- um -- up.

Aside from the embarrassment of getting rid of Stevens, if he wins they probably end up with Palin in the Senate as a reward for all the trouble of booting Ted. Which some in the base would like, but you can bet very damn few in the Republican establishment want to see. I'd almost like to see it happen - the Dems aren't gonna get to 60 anyway and I'd love to see the GOP have to stew in their Palin juices while they try to have the debate they need to have over the next several years. Just for entertainment sake...

For this exact reason, I'm almost praying that he will win, so we can sit back, and enjoy the spectacle. If he loses, can he challenge Palin, him being a jailbird and all that?

Seen people bewildered at how it can be taking so long to count these votes in Alaska, but hey, that's nothing. Still no presidential vote in Missouri? What up with dat?

8,000 provisional ballots to be counted by monday.

It's hard to know why it's taking so long. I was a ballot canvasser in a small county in Maryland. Last week, we knocked off 3,500 provisional and absentee ballots in 4 hours. About five teams of two. What's the hold up? Get more people in to help.

Isn't it interesting that Steven's statement that he doesn't consider himself "convicted of anything until sentenced?" Seven felonies are just a matter of semantics, uncle ted? Stevens exists in an alternate reality, which is why he
continues to be shocked!..shocked!, I tell you
that anyone could conceive that he'd done
anything improper, let alone illegal. Alaska
will hopefully now benefit from a hitherto
scarce commodity...integrity. The number of
elected politicians in Alaska who have fallen
due to corruption are in direct proportion to
the $$$ dangled concurrent with the
construction of the pipeline and Stevens
held court in approving each and every
contract award. Another emperor without
clothes.......

I'm wondering what would happen if the Democrats refused to expel Stevens (assuming he wins). I guess I can also assume Stevens isn't going to prison, either. I think if the fine people of Alaska still want him, they should have him, and NOT let Gov. Palin name his successor (or take over the seat herself).
In fact, if I remember my Constitution, they can't expel Stevens WITHOUT the Democrats' help. It says 2/3 of the senators, not 2/3 of the Republicans, does it not? Given a choice of Stevens or THAT WOMAN on CSPAN every day, I think I'd vote "present."

Excellent point. If I was a voting Dem, I'd want a cranky, old convicted felon roaming the hallways representing the GOP.

OT, but I just want to say that it pleases me to read that Richardson is still in the running for SoS. Although H. Clinton could make a fine SoS, I think it would be too much off a media circus that could potentially interfere with the serious and critical business of the SoS. Richardson could get right to work and without the white hot spotlight of the media following his every move.

Either is fully capable. The circus works in our favor in some ways, it shuts up the whiners and "gender feminists" ("It's time for men to get out of the way!") and builds a stronger bond among a broad women's segment for 2012.
On the other hand, I hope she'd be respectful. Cuz she sure would be tough to fire (flip side of the above).

I think Obama is going to select people based on who he thinks will make his administration the most successful possible. If some want to protest there isn't enough of this or that demographic group, he'll work to weather whatever storm arises. He knows that he only gets one shot at this.

Instead of passing out important Cabinet posts to political hacks and presidential wannabees like Hillary, Bill Richardson or John Kerry, why not appoint a career diplomat like Richard Holbrooke who might actually get something done without any drama or excess baggage. Just a thought...

Talk about what is least worst.
Try and get your thinking around the large picture: the insanity club is at such a low ebb they have to decide between someone who refuses to see reality and someone who wouldn't know reality anyway.
Then they must sell thier decision as the right choice.
If the don't want to drop deeper faster they may be rooting for the enemy.
That undecided by nature jumpin joe may prevent 60 no matter

As a Canadian, I am very concerned with what is happening in Alaska. It seems to be in danger of falling into the 'failed state' category, saved perhaps from this ignominy by generous petrodollar distributions to the unwashed.
I was recently reviewing the terms of the 1903 boundary settlement with respect to the border of the panhandle which of course continues to rankle in some quarters since it's terms with respect to boundary waters have never been honored by the United States. Flouting international agreements - what an uncharacteristic shame!
Be that as it may, the Alaskan level of contempt for normal democratic discourse and the incidence of petty grafting by politicians both seem to have reached the level of, well, extremely offensive. I just hope that it's not contagious. We might just have to have a border incident to sharpen people up.

This angry vulgar old man would fit right in with those going into a Palin rally. Contemptuous.
Sick people looking for a Hitler personality filled with hate and condemnation telling them they are the "true" Germans...too twisted to be informed. 2012 is a science fiction movie title for a movie that doesn't end well for the Paliens.
