A Night At The Congressional Races
Here's our final nightly run-down of the Congressional races:
GOP Senator's Campaign Denies Distributing Sample Ballot Implying He's A Dem
Check this out. The campaign of Sen. Roger Wicker (R-MS), who is running in a special election that won't have party affiliation listed on the ballot, is being accused by the Dems of circulating this misleading sample ballot that asks recipients to vote for the Democratic candidates in every race -- except his own:
As Phil Singer remarks: "I can't remember the last time a Mississippi Republican pretended to be a Democrat in a statewide election."
Late Update: In an interview with Election Central, Wicker spokesman Ryan Annison denied any involvement by the campaign. "The honest to goodness truth is this is the first time we've seen it," said Annison. "At five o'clock the night before the election, I can't say that our opponent's press releases are a priority."
Obama Cuts Radio Ad For Wicker's Opponent
Meanwhile, the campaign of Wicker's Democratic opponent Ronnie Musgrove has this radio ad targeted at Democratic voters, featuring Barack Obama reminding listeners who it is that he'd like them to support:
The trouble that these candidates have gone to in order to inform people of their party affiliations -- and perhaps to obfuscate that point -- is as good an argument as any against non-partisan elections.
Shadegg Campaign Employs Felons -- Including Sex Offender
The re-election campaign of Rep. John Shadegg (R-AZ) has been caught hiring convicted felons, including at least one sex offender, to work its phone banks -- giving them access to voters' phone numbers and other personal info. In a brief conversation last night with Election Central, Shadegg spokesperson Abby Winter was clearly surprised to be informed of this, and told us that the campaign did its hiring for those positions through a job listing on the LDS Church's employment services site. After saying she would look into this further, she did not get back to us with any further comment.
Franken: "Norm Coleman Is Looking You In The Eye And Lying"
Al Franken has this new ad going right after Sen. Norm Coleman (R-MN) over allegations that a wealthy donor funneled $75,000 to the Senator via his wife. In the ad, Franken rebuts Coleman's charges that his campaign has been behind the reports:
"The lawsuit about funneling money to Norm Coleman alleges serious and potentially criminal conduct," Franken says. "But instead of providing answers, Norm Coleman is trying to deflect blame on me. That is shameful."
Candidate Slug Out Coleman Allegations At Debate
The allegations against Coleman dominated the final debate last night, a particularly nasty gathering in which Coleman denied any wrong-doing and accusing the Franken campaign of attacking his wife. Franken responded bluntly: "This is not about me ... This is about Sen. Coleman's political sugar daddy."
Two New Polls Show Atheist-Baiter Dole Down By Seven
The new SurveyUSA poll has Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-NC) trailing Democratic challenger Kay Hagan by seven points, 50%-43%, compared to a 46%-45% Hagan edge two weeks ago. And the new numbers from Public Policy Polling (D): Hagan 51%, Dole 44%, compared to a 48%-45% Hagan advantage a week ago. From the analysis by PPP's Tom Jensen: "Elizabeth Dole's 'Godless Americans' ad has clearly blown up in her face."
Poll: Bachmann Up By One Point
A new SurveyUSA poll shows Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) leading Dem challenger El Tinklenberg by one point: Bachmann 46%, Tinklenberg 45%, compared to a 47%-44% Tinklenberg lead from a week and a half ago. Bachmann is still below 50% support, a tough spot for a controversial incumbent, but she may have done enough to stop the bleeding caused by her McCarthyesque rant on Hardball, and win back voters in her deep-red district.
Poll: House Dem Could Lose Re-Election
A new SurveyUSA poll shows Rep. Paul Kanjorski (D-PA) trailing GOP challenger Lou Barletta, who has run a populist campaign against illegal immigration: Barletta 51%, Kanjorski 45%, with a ±4% margin of error. Kanjorski, who has held this seat for 24 years, is in fact running behind the national ticket here, with Barack Obama carrying the district 53%-43%.
Dems Go For One Last Attack Ad
The DCCC has aired this last-minute attack against Chris Lee, the Republican candidate for an open GOP-held House seat in Upstate New York, after a local paper reported that Lee was fired from a sales job 20 years ago for hacking company computers and raising his own customers' credit limits, in order to sell more products:
Lee has run well ahead of Dem candidate Alice Kryzan in the polls, but this last-minute revelation might be enough to make the race a whole lot closer, or perhaps even put Kryzan over the top.

Wait a minute...is the Wicker spokesperson saying that Musgrove is the one who put out the flyer implying Wicker is a Democrat? That makes no sense. Unless he's trying to imply that being affiliated with Democrats is a smear?
Lame.

Michele Bachmann has recruited home-schoolers (the kids and the parents) to drop lit for her campaign today. And she says public schools indoctrinate kids with propaganda!

Just got back from door-hangering, and have to share.
I ran into my first rabid racist today -- first while canvassing, that is. I was sure I had the right house. Went to hang Obama material on door. Guy -- biker, had Harley sticker on pickup truck -- saw me through the door. I waved the material in a friendly manner...
"I DON'T WANT ANYTHING TO DO WITH THAT G-- D----- S---!!! G-- D------ N-----!!!
I went into don't-show-the-dog-fear mode. And said, "Are you sure?"
He lunged at the door. I said, "Ok. Have a nice evening."
I wonder how some of these types will deal, mentally and emotionally, with the next eight years.

I don't know but maybe you ought to write that guy's address down just in case. You might need to give it to the Secret Service.
That's my remaining fear -

Not well. Remember how over the edge the nutcases went during the Clinton years...drug trafficking, murder, etc? Multiply that by 10. We've already seen whiffs of it: Obama's Malcom X's illegitimate child, Ayers wrote his books...it's going to be crazy.
Anyway, thanks for working so hard...

Here's the thing - the Repugs had a party then. They're going to be busy trying to put something back together.
And I really think the days of Ann Coulter and the rest being very visible, are over. She's been rather quiet lately and I think this right wing extremism as part of popular culture is over - I think they go back to being screamers on the radio at 3 AM.

Watch it now! I'm a biker with a Harley sticker on my pickup (really!). Of course I'm also a third generation leftist civil rights/social justice elitist pointy headed queer.(*)
(*) It's kinda like the n-word... We can call ourselves that ;-)

And by third generation civil rights/social justice advocate I mean my father's father and mother both worked for immigrants rights in upstate New York in the thirties and my mother and father met in Selma AL in 1959 where they were both volunteering with the Young Dems. My dad was thrown out of Duke grad school for participating in a counter sit-in demonstration in 1960. I volunteer for AIDS network and work for legal equality with the LGBT community.
And by elitist I mean I read Scientific American, Cell and The New Yorker.
And by pointy headed I mean I have a Masters in linguistic semantics.
And by queer I mean as a three dollar bill honey, and don't you forget it!
But I still ride a Harley and drive a pick-up and bow hunt deer from time to time.

"Pennsylvania has an illegal immigration problem?"
- Yes, comparable to the Jewish question in contemporary Poland. Here in Pittsburgh, the foreign menace has been greatly amplified by the near-total absence of actual illegal immigrants. We know them only through Lou Dobbs.

If Norman didn't want his wife involved, why did he make her a "blind" for his dirty money? That's really the only question we want answered.

The important point is he has no proof at all that Franken or the party were behind the lawsuits, so he's lying when he makes that charge as well as hiding behind "don't attack my family" when no one is attacking his family. Sadly, a caller to a local liberal talk radio show said she was on a phone bank today, and multiple people brought it up as a reason to oppose Franken.
