Virginia GOP Mailer Depicts Dems -- And Obama? -- As Appeasers Of Terrorists
In the race's final stretch, much of the real sludge and slime that floats to the surface will be the work not of the campaigns but of under-the-radar operations run by state parties and the like.
Here, for instance, is a new mailer from the Republican Party of Virginia that has to be seen to be believed. It hits Dems -- and by extension, Obama -- for wanting to appease terrorists and rogue leaders.
But the key is the last page, which displays a man who looks like Obama but with the same dark and sinister aspect as the bad actors depicted elsewhere in the mailing. Note the words superimposed over his face (click on the images to enlarge)...
How about those eyes, huh? Here's the rest:
We asked Virginia spokesperson Gerry Scimeca whether the likeness to Obama was in fact the Illinois Senator, and he said he couldn't immediately say. Asked to defend the mailer, he said: "It's about the fact that the world is evil," he said, referring to the multiple bad actors that populate the planet. "Choosing a president is about standing up to them."
To our eyes, the ambiguity over whether the image is that of Obama is alone telling. Meanwhile, Raising Kaine has the lowdown on the mailer's multiple distortions.

This shit is not going to work this year.

I am so sick of this bogeyman. That's all it is - a bogeyman.
I'll say this until I'm told to stop -= there is no GWOT. There is almost NO terrorist threat. Every American has a slightly better chance of hitting the powerball in the state lottery than they do of being killed by a terrorist on American soil.
There is only a 1 in 80,000 chance of being in a terrorist attack in "America. You are 19 times more likely to die as a result of being hit by lightning!

I was phone-banking before the debate last night and had a long (and, I thought, interesting) talk with a right-winger.
What was most interesting to me was that he was very intelligent and had a true command of the same facts that I did, and his argument for McCain was highly thought-out and nuanced.
It's just that he believes, without a doubt, that Obama "wants to raise your taxes" and "terrorists want to kill us all," maybe not here or now, but definitely in Israel, and only Republicans know how to deal with such things.
I couldn't get off the phone--it was like watching a really intriguing scary movie--you know what's going to happen, but you have to watch anyway. How could somebody with that level of intelligence (and he was) come to the polar opposite conclusion given the very same facts?
The human mind is an amazing tool.

Good on you for your hard work.
It does seem inexplicable how rank and file Conservatives could apprehend the same facts and arrive at such different conclusions, isn't it?
The first line of the first page of John Dean's book, Conservatives Without Conscience speaks directly to the problem of how conservatives think. Here is a link right to that page of the book:

That said, yeah, I freaking agree with you. GTWOT was and is pretty much a sham. If it had been for real, then Osama would be in gitmo.
Besides, I was living in the DC area after 911, and there's only so many times that you can change from yellow to orange back to yellow before you think the whole thing's a crock of bull. Ask anyone who lives in the area and they ALL know how stupid our government's response was.

I couldn't agree with you more. What's disturbing is the amount of money being wasted on preparing for "the attack." In my little city, we have taken hundreds of thousands of dollars (Federal grant of course) and bought decontamination trailers, rubber tents that cost $15K a piece, on and on.......
The manner in which the Federal Govt. hands out funds is reckless at best. There seems to be no coordination with all of the local cities as to who has what in terms of equipment and training. Ok, off topic.
I agree that there is a much greater chance of winning the lottery, getting struck by lightning and meeting Jimmy Hoffa all in the same day vs. actually being hit directly by a terrorist attack. Maybe they'll learn that this is an old tactic and doesn't work so well anymore. One can only hope!

Trying to reference Obama as a terrorist is not working in red states. Folks in the deep south aren't voting for Obama because he's black. It has nothing to do with being a terrorist. and So in border states like Virginia and North Carolina that don't have as many knuckle draggers, decent voters don't hold his biracial heritage against him.
But making the leap into being a terrorist I think is a logical step too far.
The republicans should have learned when they tried to do the "Obama is a Terrorist" carpet bombing campaign for the Mississippi special election and the Cayazou special election in Baton Rouge. and now with Mary Landrieu in Louisiana.
They spent millions on ads and fliers trying to tie the democrats in these elections to Scary Man Obama and it didn't affect the voting.
The R's lost both the Mississippi and the Louisiana congressional special elections and as of last night, they announced they are pulling out of the Senate race in Louisiana.
This after weeks and weeks of commercials about www.LandriueObama.com
Oy!

God, these fear tactics are awful. This is precisely the atmosphere of hate John Lewis was speaking about.
Black folks only stopped living with fear and intimidation in the South post 1980. This stuff is real...Heck that guy Jaspers was just dragged and chained behind that truck in TX when Bush was elected.
This is the type of Klan rally stuff that is nothing but HATE HATE HATE.
I wish there was a felony against these type of actions based on race and fear.
My Jewish friend told me her son came home from school and asked her 'where are we going to live mommy when Obama is elected"..."blacks have a different culture from us'...'they hate us' 'when Obama gets elected we all will be thrown out of our houses'
She was dumbfounded and asked him 'Jacob where did you hear this stuff'...he replied 'on the playground from Charlie'
These type messages in grade school yards have the potential to set this country back fourty years.
anyone who has not seen this impassioned speech from Donna Brazile needs to listen to it:

It was our prisons that caused that - not our society, not Texas racism - Texas prisons.

Not putting words in your mouth Tena...my overall point was that that racist event occurred in 1980..i.e. that this type of HATE, and racial animosity is not that far in the pass.
TX was simply where the event occurred..it could have been KS or MO ..or even Tallahassee Fl, in terms of how geography but the recentness of the date was the point.

Well, not to mention America's love affair with saying that only the South fosters racism.
Let's clear that up: it's not true. I know it makes lots of folks feel better to say that racism only exists "down there," but it is absolutely untrue that the "South" has exclusive claims on racial hatred and division in the US.

Compare the eyes, though. They really retouched the eyes. In Photoshop, you can lay one photo over another and make the photo on top somewhat transparent. Then you use the one underneath as a template to manipulate the one on top. I've shown the photo to a dozen people and asked them who it is. They've all immediately said, "It's Barack Obama." Then when I point out that it's bin Laden, they usually say something along the lines of, "I guess so, but the eyes are wrong."

It goes without saying that it is, of course, counter factual . . .

Although, the more I look at it, the more I think it looks like they did a little Photoshop morphing. If you compare the photo of bin Laden to the one above, it's clear they retouched it. They removed some of the lines and the darkness around the eyes. And it appears to me they also made the eyes look more open. It would surprise me at all to learn that they used the clone tool or even just the smudge tool to reshape the eyes to make them look more like Obama's. I'd need to see a much bigger version of flier and the bin Laden photo, but there's more than just a little color manipulation going on.

Look carefully at the eyes and the skin markings above the left eye. The marks are identical. It's clear they did some Clone Stamping or Healing Brush stuff in the hair and around the edges, but were too stupid to take the 10 or 15 seconds it would have taken to clone out the marks. Next look at the highlights in the eyes. They played a tad with the left eye highlight I think but highlights are not all that easy to move because the lighting used to take the original was straight on and so the highlights can pretty much only be where they are. Moving them would mean changing the lighting, It can be done, but maybe not by their PS person. Finally note that they cleaned up the white part of the eyes to the right of the cornea (as you look at the fake) but not to the left. I agree that the brown was likely picked up off a real Obama photo. No big trick. One click in fact. Really sloppy work. I grabbed the original and pretty much duplicated the fake in less than 15 minutes.

This is paranoia at it's finest, Greg. Don't lose your grip on reality now. We're so close to the finish line and victory is near!

Before I get chastized for the comments I'm about to leave, no I don't think the things that are being mailed out are right, fair, correct, etc. and no I'm not voting for McCain or Obama.
I'd like to know why all you posting think it's right for the government to take the money from your paycheck that you worked so hard for and then give it to someone else in the form of a check that didn't earn it? I'm all for helping the innocent or disabled (children, elderly, disabled), but how is it fair that people who can work, but don't or won't get the money I worked my ass off to get?
