Virginia GOP Mailer Depicts Dems -- And Obama? -- As Appeasers Of Terrorists

In the race's final stretch, much of the real sludge and slime that floats to the surface will be the work not of the campaigns but of under-the-radar operations run by state parties and the like.

Here, for instance, is a new mailer from the Republican Party of Virginia that has to be seen to be believed. It hits Dems -- and by extension, Obama -- for wanting to appease terrorists and rogue leaders.

But the key is the last page, which displays a man who looks like Obama but with the same dark and sinister aspect as the bad actors depicted elsewhere in the mailing. Note the words superimposed over his face (click on the images to enlarge)...

How about those eyes, huh? Here's the rest:

We asked Virginia spokesperson Gerry Scimeca whether the likeness to Obama was in fact the Illinois Senator, and he said he couldn't immediately say. Asked to defend the mailer, he said: "It's about the fact that the world is evil," he said, referring to the multiple bad actors that populate the planet. "Choosing a president is about standing up to them."

To our eyes, the ambiguity over whether the image is that of Obama is alone telling. Meanwhile, Raising Kaine has the lowdown on the mailer's multiple distortions.

Someone is stuck in 2004.

This shit is not going to work this year.

user-pic

2004? hell, this is 1988 crap.

I give it about a week until we see the old Jesse Helms YOU NEEDED THAT JOB...ad. You remember, the one with white hands ripping up a job application.

White hands.

White like us.

user-pic

I'm 25. I don't remember that ad ;)

user-pic

Youth is wasted on the young. Sad emoticon.

user-pic

Yeah, well drugs are wasted on the old.

user-pic

I am so sick of this bogeyman. That's all it is - a bogeyman.

I'll say this until I'm told to stop -= there is no GWOT. There is almost NO terrorist threat. Every American has a slightly better chance of hitting the powerball in the state lottery than they do of being killed by a terrorist on American soil.

There is only a 1 in 80,000 chance of being in a terrorist attack in "America. You are 19 times more likely to die as a result of being hit by lightning!

user-pic

I was phone-banking before the debate last night and had a long (and, I thought, interesting) talk with a right-winger.

What was most interesting to me was that he was very intelligent and had a true command of the same facts that I did, and his argument for McCain was highly thought-out and nuanced.

It's just that he believes, without a doubt, that Obama "wants to raise your taxes" and "terrorists want to kill us all," maybe not here or now, but definitely in Israel, and only Republicans know how to deal with such things.

I couldn't get off the phone--it was like watching a really intriguing scary movie--you know what's going to happen, but you have to watch anyway. How could somebody with that level of intelligence (and he was) come to the polar opposite conclusion given the very same facts?

The human mind is an amazing tool.

user-pic

Good on you for your hard work.

It does seem inexplicable how rank and file Conservatives could apprehend the same facts and arrive at such different conclusions, isn't it?

The first line of the first page of John Dean's book, Conservatives Without Conscience speaks directly to the problem of how conservatives think. Here is a link right to that page of the book:

user-pic

Watch it, Tena. You're talking statistics and...people ...tend to fall asleep.......

That said, yeah, I freaking agree with you. GTWOT was and is pretty much a sham. If it had been for real, then Osama would be in gitmo.

Besides, I was living in the DC area after 911, and there's only so many times that you can change from yellow to orange back to yellow before you think the whole thing's a crock of bull. Ask anyone who lives in the area and they ALL know how stupid our government's response was.

user-pic

The truly scary part about living in the DC area after 9/11 was the Beltway Sniper killings.

user-pic

Jeez, don't remind me. I lived about a block away from where the first kill went down. Of course it just seemed like a random murder then...

user-pic

I lived and worked within a mile radius of three of them, including the first (I used to shop at that crafts store).

That case made me seriously reconsider the death penalty.

user-pic

I couldn't agree with you more. What's disturbing is the amount of money being wasted on preparing for "the attack." In my little city, we have taken hundreds of thousands of dollars (Federal grant of course) and bought decontamination trailers, rubber tents that cost $15K a piece, on and on.......
The manner in which the Federal Govt. hands out funds is reckless at best. There seems to be no coordination with all of the local cities as to who has what in terms of equipment and training. Ok, off topic.
I agree that there is a much greater chance of winning the lottery, getting struck by lightning and meeting Jimmy Hoffa all in the same day vs. actually being hit directly by a terrorist attack. Maybe they'll learn that this is an old tactic and doesn't work so well anymore. One can only hope!

user-pic
user-pic

They really believe the entire country remains as stupid as the people at Sarah Palin's rallies.

user-pic

Trying to reference Obama as a terrorist is not working in red states. Folks in the deep south aren't voting for Obama because he's black. It has nothing to do with being a terrorist. and So in border states like Virginia and North Carolina that don't have as many knuckle draggers, decent voters don't hold his biracial heritage against him.

But making the leap into being a terrorist I think is a logical step too far.

The republicans should have learned when they tried to do the "Obama is a Terrorist" carpet bombing campaign for the Mississippi special election and the Cayazou special election in Baton Rouge. and now with Mary Landrieu in Louisiana.

They spent millions on ads and fliers trying to tie the democrats in these elections to Scary Man Obama and it didn't affect the voting.

The R's lost both the Mississippi and the Louisiana congressional special elections and as of last night, they announced they are pulling out of the Senate race in Louisiana.

This after weeks and weeks of commercials about www.LandriueObama.com

Oy!

user-pic

Fail. This ad comes across as pure desperation at best; demagoguery at worst. I think the biggest problem with it, though, is that it feels so yesterday; so immediately post-911.

I'm glad you make such a good effort at keeping us posted on this stuff, Greg. Thanks. Rec'd.

user-pic

It smacks of failed Bush doctrine, of the pre-Iraq invasion mentality which got us into our current mess.

The feared, nasty Rovian campaign is here in the form of an outdated, comical, kitsch B-movie.

user-pic

um, what's the Bush doctrine?

user-pic

That's the title of the new Hustler movie with that Palin lookalike. "Drill, Baby, Drill: The Bush Doctrine".

user-pic

I thought the movie titled, "Nailin' Palin".

user-pic

HA!

user-pic

His world view? Careful, he's got us right where he wants us. :)

user-pic

Why does he have no nose?

user-pic

Because if they showed the nose, you could tell whether it was Osama or not. Without the nose, the image is just ambiguous enough that some people will take it for Obama and subliminally (or even consciously) absorb the "evil" association.

user-pic

I think that's bin Laden, but they're certainly leaving it open to interpretation.

Keep firing, assholes!

user-pic

I'm pretty sure you're right, Mr. Loggins. David, I think you jumped the gun on this. It looks like bin Laden to me....

user-pic

It is a photo of Osama Bin Laden's eyes.

Not to take away from the sheer stupidity of the mailer, but the wingnutosphere will delight in our discussion of whether they're Obama's eyes... (cuz, heh heh, see... even libruls can't tell Obama from Osama... heh heh)

user-pic

They certainly don't mind that people are confusing the two. This is probably the conversation that the mailer is supposed to spark. Staying classy, as always...

user-pic

It could be bin Laden, possibly this photo:

bin Laden closeup

But if so, everything has been blurred except around the eyes, and the photo has been doctored to look more like Obama. Sick.

Sorry if I didn't post the link correctly--it doesn't look right when I preview it--but it's the best I can do. Cut and paste this if you need to:

http://www.ananova.com/images/news/binladen_burtAP410x225.jpg

user-pic

So I inserted the link correctly, but got the wrong photo. DanR2 gets it right below.

user-pic

God, these fear tactics are awful. This is precisely the atmosphere of hate John Lewis was speaking about.

Black folks only stopped living with fear and intimidation in the South post 1980. This stuff is real...Heck that guy Jaspers was just dragged and chained behind that truck in TX when Bush was elected.

This is the type of Klan rally stuff that is nothing but HATE HATE HATE.

I wish there was a felony against these type of actions based on race and fear.

My Jewish friend told me her son came home from school and asked her 'where are we going to live mommy when Obama is elected"..."blacks have a different culture from us'...'they hate us' 'when Obama gets elected we all will be thrown out of our houses'

She was dumbfounded and asked him 'Jacob where did you hear this stuff'...he replied 'on the playground from Charlie'

These type messages in grade school yards have the potential to set this country back fourty years.

anyone who has not seen this impassioned speech from Donna Brazile needs to listen to it:

Donna Brazile is not going to the back of the bus:
http://jezebel.com/5059945/donna-brazile-is-not-going-to-the-back-of-t?mail2=true#mail2friend

user-pic

Jacob is looking evil in the eye.

Someone at Charlie's house thinks he'll flinch.

Not this time.

user-pic

The 3 guys in Jasper, Texas got hateful in prison.

Prison did that to them - Ok? It had nothing to do with Jasper, Texas, and everything in the universe to do with our prisons.

It was our prisons that caused that - not our society, not Texas racism - Texas prisons.

user-pic

Tena, surely you are not asserting that only Tx prisons breed hate in our society? They may potentiate HATE but they certainly have no exclusivity on hate and racism in America.

user-pic

No - and don't put words in my mouth.

Those 3 guys had been inside and they joined a White Supremacist Society INSIDE.

Not every instance of racism or hate is prison generated - but that one WAS.

user-pic

Not putting words in your mouth Tena...my overall point was that that racist event occurred in 1980..i.e. that this type of HATE, and racial animosity is not that far in the pass.

TX was simply where the event occurred..it could have been KS or MO ..or even Tallahassee Fl, in terms of how geography but the recentness of the date was the point.

user-pic

Well, not to mention America's love affair with saying that only the South fosters racism.

Let's clear that up: it's not true. I know it makes lots of folks feel better to say that racism only exists "down there," but it is absolutely untrue that the "South" has exclusive claims on racial hatred and division in the US.

user-pic

I agree, W.VA, OH and MS are not the South, neither is Kansas.

user-pic

Um...can some one tell me how can I get rid of that funky wig wearing Revolution war era looking man on my posts?

user-pic

Go to edit your profile (in the menu above). There's a place to enter a "user pic" (short for picture)

I wish it were that easy. I have tried multiple times to change my avatar, and the success rate is about 1 in 20.

user-pic

Try re-typing your password and then submit.

Include a few extra nodes as well.
:-P

user-pic

I'm at about 0 for 50 on the avatar upload... get a movable type session has ended page after hitting the "save" button.

user-pic

Here's my first post since trying to upload? I doubt it works...I received movable type messages.

user-pic

Click on your dashboard. Look for Al Shaw's name. Click on that. Look for one of his "reader help blogs" and let him know the problem with trying to load a picture.

The picture needs to be uploaded from you computer, I think. That's how I did mine. Downloaded from the web first. Then uploaded from my computer.

user-pic

Can I upload any sized image and it will shrink to fit or do I need to resize it first? Thanks.

user-pic

Macaca

user-pic

And playing bogeyman, are you kidding with kids?
Klanism does not work. We don't live in Wallace era.
You should see this Palin-rape ad. It ran on CNN right after the debate:
http://www.americablog.com/2008/10/wow-one-hell-of-anti-sarah-palin-rape.html

user-pic

Gawd, that is good. Hits you deep.

user-pic

Gawd, that is good. Hits you deep.

user-pic

I saw it last night after the debate. That's pretty rough.

user-pic

Can't you just smell the flop-sweat when you see that mailer? Can you really see that moving the needle in these economic times?

user-pic

How about - Let's just look Reality in the eye.

Then calm assess.

Followed by: accept it or do something, depending.

user-pic

The Repubs have to rally the Klan and other haters for election day so it can be 70-30 at the polls. Unless they can get a couple million voters challenged, in which case it'll be 68-32.

Gobama!

user-pic

The RNC sent me a different mailer in northern Virginia yesterday. I sent it into TMP last night. It's of a similar sinister nature. We'll see if it's posted.

user-pic

We are all waiting for McCain to denounce these negative attacks like he said he always does at the debate

user-pic

Yeah.

user-pic

Im just waiting for the Bin Laden tape to be released.

user-pic

So we can all roll around on the floor laughing at it?

Bin Laden - the Bush-Cheney-Rove co-conspirator?

user-pic

Terrorist appeasers? Are you serious? Get a clue. It's a picture of Obama's eyes. Read the caption. Look at the photo. Then put 2 and 2 together. Obama = Evil. They're not saying he's an appeaser. They're saying he's the enemy.

user-pic

The enemy is a sitting US Senator and the likely next President?

Doesn't that make THESE people the terrorists?

user-pic

It's NOT Obama. see here.

And the original OBL photo here.

user-pic

Ah, good catch. Had me fooled. I was all ready to vote for McCain. Thank goodness I don't have to.

user-pic

Credit goes to GUZMÁN at Jazz from Hell.

user-pic

Compare the eyes, though. They really retouched the eyes. In Photoshop, you can lay one photo over another and make the photo on top somewhat transparent. Then you use the one underneath as a template to manipulate the one on top. I've shown the photo to a dozen people and asked them who it is. They've all immediately said, "It's Barack Obama." Then when I point out that it's bin Laden, they usually say something along the lines of, "I guess so, but the eyes are wrong."

Pixeloo (the guy who made that horrifying "untooned" Homer Simpson) has a little tutorial:

One other not-so-subtle change: they removed Osama's beard. They're not just suggesting that Obama is evil, they're suggesting that he's a terrorist. This is pretty sophisticated crap.

user-pic

Apologies for the double post. I got a "no available nodes" error the first time I tried to post.

user-pic

Wow. That's frickin' creepy.

I wish this would hit the networks to show what they are doing. Insane.

user-pic

Really cool. I bet they thought it was really cool. "Osama sounds like Obama, let's make him look like Obama!"

user-pic

They're running non-stop radio "Ayers" ads in Northern Virginia, which I find a little surprising, because I thought that they would marshal their resources by foregoing our expensive media market and focusing on more fertile territory in Southeastern Virginia, as well as the Shenandoah Valley counties.

It starts with something like "Blind Ambition--how Obama cultivated Ayers for 7 years and worked with him on a radical education foundation until he became a liability . . ."

It goes without saying that it is, of course, counter factual . . .

user-pic

This does show how afraid the Repub's are this year.

user-pic

Yes, it's Bin Laden with enough of a tint to suggest to the mind, along with the context, that it's a picture of Obama.

user-pic

* * * * * * *
ATTN: Those are clearly Osama bin Laden's eyes. You may want to remove this post.

user-pic

It is bin Laden. Here's a link to the pic these eyes are taken from.

http://discardedlies.com/media/osama-bin-laden.jpg

In fact, if you look off to the left side of the pic you can make out the turban....

user-pic

"It's about the fact that the world is evil,"

Wow. The World According to Gerry Scimeca. Fever-brained Manichaean fantasy at its worst.

user-pic

Wait....

We must look evil in the eye and never flinch. But not literally, because that would involve meeting with them, which we're definitely against. We must look evil in the eye without actually making eye contact while we talk passive aggressively to anyone who will listen.

"Hey Britain! Tell Iran that I'm not speaking with them... and make sure to look them in the eye when you do!"

user-pic

Also, after watching the 3 presidential debates, you might not want to bring up which one of them has trouble looking his opponent in the eye, not to mention flinching...

Come on Virginia GOP! This is too easy!

user-pic

I don't think it's actually Bin Laden, but the trimmed, arched eyebrows do suggest him. The sides of the eyes and the skin tone suggest Obama. I think it's close enough to both to suggest the resemblance, which is almost certainly what they were going for.

user-pic

For the majority of Republicans to supposedly be God fearing Christians, they often don't practice what they preach. All they seem to do is harbor fear. Fear Obama, fear socilism, communism, terrorisn, whateverism! Live your life in FEAR!!!

What an incredible hoax! And what a breath of fresh air for Obama to preach hope.

These people can't seem to rest easy unless there is some looming insurmountable fear conjured up in their imaginations.

user-pic

Yup - definitely bin Laden's eyes. I thought I was misunderstanding the post and thought Obama might have been in one of the smaller pics or something.

user-pic

stop politicizing my name, that's all i've gotta say at the moment. leave me and all the joe's alone.

user-pic

True enough, green eared kitty rabbit,,,, to the bipedal omnivores to whom that ad appeals Obama is the enemy, the end of the asumptions of the supremacy of themselves and their way of life.

And that, makes the ad, and them, dangerous. It's more evidence of the death of their romantic version of the Old South than Brown and voting rights all rolled into one.

user-pic

Except that I'm probably full of crap:

http://tpmelectioncentral.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/10/virginia_gop_mailer_appears_to.php#comment-3232117

Although, the more I look at it, the more I think it looks like they did a little Photoshop morphing. If you compare the photo of bin Laden to the one above, it's clear they retouched it. They removed some of the lines and the darkness around the eyes. And it appears to me they also made the eyes look more open. It would surprise me at all to learn that they used the clone tool or even just the smudge tool to reshape the eyes to make them look more like Obama's. I'd need to see a much bigger version of flier and the bin Laden photo, but there's more than just a little color manipulation going on.

user-pic

Greg, that is definitely a picture of Bin Laden's eyes. While the flier is a little over the top, I think you're WAY overreaching here, especially because the mailer is pretty ineffective. Why build it up so much? Let it go into the trash is it would have...

user-pic

Well, I hate to swim upstream here, but the photo reminds me more of Mohamed Atta than Osama bin Laden.

user-pic

This mailer has nothing to do with winning votes. Knowing that the county fair (or backwoods Pentecostal revival) is about to end, they are pitching the Geeks (passing the collection plate) one more time before they fold up the tents, take off their costumes, and dive-up the take. Stump=dumb republicans.....

user-pic

"The world is evil"???

It's the last 8 years of that foreign policy that has propelled the US to the great heights of...damn, that didn't work, did it?

user-pic

So they take away signs of the beard. Erase the mustache, then darken the face - of Osama. Boy, these guys are slick!

Not only do they feel compelled to smear Arabs and Muslims and Blacks, they roll it altogether into terrorists.

Just makes me sick!

user-pic

America must face the threat of terror head-on. Apply directly to forehead. America must face the threat of terror head-on. Apply directly to forehead.

user-pic

"It's about the fact that the world is evil,"

Talk about projection.

user-pic

Where I come from, we call that dirty pool.

Bad form, McCain.

http://thetruthburns.wordpress.com/2008/10/14/whoever-goes-after-the-wolves-of-wall-street-wins/

user-pic
"It's about the fact that the world is evil,"

Man, that's one paranoid philosophy. If McCain signs off on that, then his diagnosis will be complete.

Someone ought to have the Republicans up their daily dose of lithium.

user-pic

To the question "would they conflate the image" of Osama and Obama for rhetorical effect, I believe one way of examining the possibility would be to ask "would Lee Atwater try this?'. If the answer is "yes", then yes.

user-pic

Angry, every time I try to find your profile, I get an error saying that you don't exist. Is that true? I can't follow you if you don't exist.

user-pic

This post is a great example of dog whistle racism in today's politics. And there are so many more!

Look carefully at the eyes and the skin markings above the left eye. The marks are identical. It's clear they did some Clone Stamping or Healing Brush stuff in the hair and around the edges, but were too stupid to take the 10 or 15 seconds it would have taken to clone out the marks. Next look at the highlights in the eyes. They played a tad with the left eye highlight I think but highlights are not all that easy to move because the lighting used to take the original was straight on and so the highlights can pretty much only be where they are. Moving them would mean changing the lighting, It can be done, but maybe not by their PS person. Finally note that they cleaned up the white part of the eyes to the right of the cornea (as you look at the fake) but not to the left. I agree that the brown was likely picked up off a real Obama photo. No big trick. One click in fact. Really sloppy work. I grabbed the original and pretty much duplicated the fake in less than 15 minutes.

user-pic

This is paranoia at it's finest, Greg. Don't lose your grip on reality now. We're so close to the finish line and victory is near!

user-pic

Before I get chastized for the comments I'm about to leave, no I don't think the things that are being mailed out are right, fair, correct, etc. and no I'm not voting for McCain or Obama.

I'd like to know why all you posting think it's right for the government to take the money from your paycheck that you worked so hard for and then give it to someone else in the form of a check that didn't earn it? I'm all for helping the innocent or disabled (children, elderly, disabled), but how is it fair that people who can work, but don't or won't get the money I worked my ass off to get?

user-pic

And did any of you not read the bottom of the mailer? It was paid for by the RPV and specifically states that no canidate has endorsed it.
