Union Mail Blitz Hits McCain -- In Deep Red West Virginia
The AFL-CIO tries to broaden the map for Obama, dropping a big blitz of mail attacking McCain and Bush on the economy in West Virginia, a state that went for Bush over Kerry in 2004 by double digits.

McCain doesn't appear to be biting on such stuff yet, though: He has cut a radio ad specifically geared for the state, but for now it doesn't appear to be running.

West Virginia would be a tough get for Obama -- but it's not outside the realm of possibility.
Now Texas -- that is a state outside the realm of possibility... :)

Are you just trying to piss us off?

Send Rich Trumka to WVA as a surrogate. Or just run his speech to the steelworkers over and over and over again. How much can radio time in WVA cost, anyway?

Absolutely. Trumka's been fantastic, giving awesome speeches. But they should have him not only in WV but in central and southwestern Pennsylvania, too. Perhaps teaming up with Leo Gerard who, though he does happen to be a Canadian, is equally great.

OT: But stories like this are why I'd rather Obama not gotten into the robocall game.
From CNN: Some residents in battleground states are receiving more than a dozen daily robocalls, recorded messages often used to attack a candidate's opponent.
Barack Obama and Joe Biden have criticized John McCain and Republicans for the calls, but both parties are players in the robocall war.

They should focus on Georgia. Taking Georgia is more realistic than West Virginia.

mccain calls nyc and washington dc as fake america in his interview with brian williams. I guess those folks that died on 9/11 weren't real americans

McCain is gaining ground again in West Virginia, but damn, how sweet a thing it would be if Obama won there...even by a few votes! Imagine that!

This is great and by all means, the AFL-CIO should make efforts in the state. They've got enough resources to push the envelope of the map a bit beyond what the Obama campaign might be doing.
It is interesting to me that they chose a firefighter rather than a mineworker for the ad. Maybe the percentage of WV union members who work in the mines isn't that high anymore.

I think the firefighter=hero theme would work well with a broad range of union workers -- postal workers (for example) as well as miners -- which would be what the AFL-CIO would be looking for.

True, true. In fact, the fire fighters union has been especially active and has TV ads bashing McShame's health care plan on the air:

Just to echo the redoubtable HyperRevue, bravo HC08! Meanwhile, I am looking very much forward to watching all of those states go blue (I like to say "Go Blue!"; it appeals to my inner Wolverine. Indeed, I am especially looking forward to watching Ohio "go blue.") I look forward to a great blue radiance, shining forth from the northeast tip of Maine and spreading like a sunbeam towards North Dakota, spreading down through Minnesota and Iowa to Missouri, and then (with a tiny shadow of red obscuring KY and TN) continuing on to illuminate North Carolina, Georgia and Florida.

Hmmm, I notice the old, and potentially misleading, "your union" tag from the Democratic primary. Probably not an issue this time. Has any major (or non-major) union endorsed McCain?

In what sense is WV "deep red"? Sure, it went for Bush twice, but we could say that much of Florida and Ohio and Colorado, and it seems that no one describes them as "deep red." Meanwhile, WV went for Dukakis in 1988 and for Clinton twice. I do not see how that sort of voting record can be characterized as "deep red."

Trumka, Ralph Stanley, Hillary, along with Gov. Manchen's "Better a black president who is your friend than a white one who is your enemy" line will go a long way. Now if Robert Byrd could cut a few barn burning ads,,,,, sweetern than honey.

The correct phonetic spelling should be "sweetern honey". West Virginians would leave out "than".
