Right-Wing Independent Group Sinks Over A Million Dollars Into Ads Attacking "Chicken" Obama

Let Freedom Ring, a conservative outside group formed in 2004, is spending over $1.2 million on a pair of ads attacking Barack Obama in multiple battleground states, newly-filed FEC reports show.

The records show that the group has plunked down over $800,000 on this spot hammering Obama over the financial meltdown and over Fannie and Freddie, charging that Obama is "benefitting politically from the financial crisis" and has been "part of the problem."...

The records show the group is spending over $400,000 on this spot hitting Obama as "chicken" for his present votes in Illinois:

JC Callahan, Let Freedom Ring's administrator, confirms the expenditures to us and adds that the spots will run in multiple battleground states. More details to follow.

Late Update: The group confirms that the buy is in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Virginia, and Colorado.

Probably more effective than anything McCain has put out recently.

user-pic

Part of McCain's problem, as with this ad, was to try and blame Fannie and Freddie for the whole mess when most Americans see it as a result of all the big key players in the financial world. Especially these days, these two are not mentioned at all in the news, with most of the focus on the banks and the credit market. So this line of attack is weak.

user-pic

When the Lehman CEO appeared before Congress, he was asked what role Fannie and Freddie played in his firm's downfall. He obviously would have had an interest in spreading the blame, but he replied, "De minimus." Now, I never studied Latin or any of those elity things, but I'm pretty sure that means "Not a whole heck of a lot."

McCain's whole Fannie/Freddie gambit was pure Rove anyway: attack Obama's tenuous ties (via Raines and Johnson) to muddy the waters before your campaign's much closer ties (via Davis) come out.

user-pic

hahaah! Keep up the good work.

user-pic

Let these idiots (Republicans) rant and rave. We all know that Democrats are going to rule in this election!! But, you conservatives shouldn't worry, at least your hero - Geo W. Bush - finally will have his legacy. The man who brought the Republican Party to its knees. Way to go, George!!

user-pic

HAHAHA The irony, the irony... It almost hurts! Yeah, Obama, you took money from those Fannie and Freddie lobbyists... Those SAME LOBBYISTS WHO NOW RUN MCCAIN'S CAMPAIGN!!!

What was it some astute poster said yesterday? Something about cognitive dissonance only happening in the presence of cognition?

Damn!

user-pic

THAT's the best they can come up with?

user-pic

Chicken? Is that the best they have?? Haha. Obama already explained the reality behind those "present" votes long ago. Perhaps Obama needs to remind them, while tying it into McCain's anti-choice agenda.

user-pic

This is the kind of opponent-defining stuff that might have some effect in August. Unfortunately for the assholes it's late October, and people already know who Barack is- and they like him.

user-pic

The difference defining your opponent and redefining your opponent. The latter is very difficult to do, especially when said opponent has such a massive advertising advantage.

user-pic

I am getting greedy. I feel like doing a W and saying "Bring it on!" I think every dime they put into this race is money wasted. I want them to be bankrupt and to have lost across the country and up and down the tickets.

Spend repubs spend!!

user-pic

Like the people who support McCain and Palin have the attention span beyond 30 seconds...

Right.

McCain Money News Roundup for Oct. 21, 2008
On the heels of reports that Barack Obama had raised $150 million in September, we learned that John McCain had $47 million on hand for October campaigning. But McCain is still tapping money from other sources.

As The Wall Street Journal’s T.W. Farnam reports, McCain has been using money from his compliance fund – typically used to cover the costs of, well, complying with federal election law – to cover up to 5 percent of his advertising expenses. And it’s a specific 5 percent: The portion of every ad that declares, “I’m John McCain and I approve this message.” McCain is using his compliance fund to an unprecedented degree, spending more in one month than either President Bush or John Kerry spent in all of 2004.

The New York Times’ Michael Luo and Griff Palmer analyze the explosive growth of joint fund-raising committees in this cycle, a development that has placed “an emphasis on the high-end check that we have not seen since the days of soft money,” according to one expert quoted in the story. Watchdog groups worry about these joint committees because they “allow donors to enjoy the clout that comes with writing a single large check.”

Bloomberg’s Jonathan D. Salant also takes note of the fact that big money still plays a big role in presidential politics, noting that 47 bundlers have raised, combined, at least $23.5 million for the Democratic nominee. Meanwhile, McCain’s 538 bundlers have raised at least $77.8 million for him. These bundlers are often from industries the candidates routinely criticize on the trail, such as lobbying and financial services.

Finally, in more (hopefully) lighthearted news, Russia’s UN ambassador got a few laughs from his colleagues this week by showing off a fundraising letter he received from McCain’s campaign (campaigns aren’t allowed to accept money from foreign nationals).---------McCain'sLobbyists.com

I think Steve is right. If they'd come out earlier, those ads might have worked. What they're saying may be bogus, but we all know how that one works in the political word. One reason they would have been effect is that, if I can put on my critic's hat, they're very well made in a down-to-earth sort of way.

user-pic

*sigh*

More great news for McLame, since the attack ads have been such an outstanding success so far.

These people are just utter fools who haven't got clue one about "real America".

user-pic

the only "real America" the care about our the rich, corporate, and the racist. Real Amerika, indeed.

user-pic

This type of hatred and racism is indicative of the current Republic Party. It is divisive and polarizing without any merit or basis. It has become even more visible and obvious the past several weeks. It is pathetic to see the number of poor white disenfranchised uneducated trash that exist in this country.

user-pic

It is MORE disgusting to see the white,PRIVILEGED,educated,Wall Street trash that have been allowed to rape and pillage this country, with the aiding and abetting of the poor and uneducated who are duped ,many times by their churches, into voting GOP and AGAINST their own, better interests...all the while PAYING to be screwed nad not kissed by their party.

user-pic

John McCain has ranted and raved about Russia. Sure like to see an ad using the fundraisng letter sent by McCain campaign to Russia's UN ambassador. I wonder, were there any "preconditions" attached?

user-pic

Speaking of Russia, there's an interesting article on TruthDig titled: Russia’s Resentment of the West Began with a Broken Promise. If McCain's forte is foreign policy, he would realize we've been tweaking the bears' nose for quite some time and there are repercussions in the makings; Georgia was just the appetizer.

Voting absentee is like planting crops. You go thru the trouble of plowing the field, adding fertilize, then plant the seeds. Once done there's nothing to do but wait a few weeks to see what comes up. Does that qualify me as a real american?

user-pic

Next ad coming down the pipeline:
"I double-dog dare America to vote for John McCain!"
followed by
"I know you are, but what am I?"

user-pic

Whoa! I'm having flashbacks!
When I was a kid in '60s "Let Freedom Ring" was the John Birch Society's name for their weekly recorded phone message. I wonder if this group's name is a coincidence or an intentional reference.

user-pic

5 will get you 10 that it's intentional.

user-pic

I'm interested in which "battleground states" this ad will play in.

Traditional battleground states, like Ohio and PA and Florida (I doubt Fla--too expensive), or suddenly this season battleground states, like VA and NC?

user-pic

Please blow your wad funneling crap ads like this into PA, McLame. Why are they still in PA? It's so expensive, and with their limited funds. Oh well, keep it up...

user-pic

DKos had an item on Oct. 14 about Obama internals that were leaked, showing Obama only up by 2.

And, Al Giordano speculates the PA strategy is about bucking up enthusiasm among GOPers nationally.

user-pic

That story is bogus and McCain's internals (if they are to be believed) have him down approximately 8 points.

user-pic

Link?

Who's your source telling you that McCain's internals are down 8?

user-pic

There has to be some internals out there that point to McCain having a shot at PA. He's spending money there, Rendel is begging Obama to come back. It looks like a longer shot than VA and CO.

user-pic

Going after the crucial Biff vote. Marty McFly does not approve!

user-pic

HA!

user-pic

Played once during the local news in the Philadelphia area, but I haven't seen it again.

user-pic

OT - Someone asked about poll closing times on Election Day. Here's a full list. We may well know if Barack is the winner by 8pm.

user-pic

Around 9pm for schizzle.... I would gather. Thanks for posting this.

user-pic

"What happens when you elect a senator who is part of the biggest financial crisis in history?"

You get President McCain, followed within a year by President-for-Life Palin.

user-pic

It's not just that the timing of these things is so late. It's also that there have been so many attack ads with varying messages that nobody is going to listen to one more.

This one has the vaguely reasonable tone that in theory could convince undecideds, but it's lost in the sea of histrionics that McCain already has out there. Why bother tieing Obama to Chris Dodd when all the other ads claim he's connected to terrorists?

user-pic

High school election: cock-a-doodle-doo !

user-pic

"the Bush administration employed a little-used 1863 law to annul all state antipredatory-lending laws and, if that wasn't enough, to block states from enforcing their own consumer protection laws in suits against national banks. Thus, when Spitzer tried to open an investigation into discriminatory mortgage lending in New York, the administration actually filed a federal lawsuit to block it. "

user-pic

This ought to be used by the Democrats as an opportunity to get more votes.

Simply put up an ad bashing McCain for having Fannie and Freddie's entire management team and entire cadre of lobbyists running his campaign and pointing out Obama doesn't take money from lobbyists.

This is a golden softball opportunity to make the Republicans look even sleazier in those four states.

As for the "present" ad, we simply need an ad listing the number of votes McCain has shown up for this year (one).

No need to respond directly to these attacks. Just an opportunity to create new attacks on related matters that make the Republicans look like total flaming hypocrites.

user-pic

I saw the first ad here in Northern Virginia last night.

user-pic

Obama has $133 million plus to spend in October. He can drown out this kind of crap easily.

user-pic

then why isn't he?

user-pic

Both of these ads are effective--short and to the point. Either of this ads could be persuasive for undecided voters.

My two cents...

user-pic

You know, they could drop the word "button" from the second one and just say "what happens when we elect a President who loves the chicken?"

You know they want to go there.

user-pic

Wow, could the people in that ad be any whiter? You'd think they'd at least try to give the fig leaf of diversity.

user-pic

Effective?

If you like ads which make low information voters eyes glaze over.

user-pic

I rebuke ALL of these right-wing independent Group's, McCain's, Palin's, and ALL of their supporters evil actions against Obama-Biden ticket in the name and blood of Jesus. I send all of them back to the pit of hell where they come from, and I cover Obama-Biden in the blood of Jesus - Sen. Obama's Lord and Savior.

Sen. Obama will be vindicated - his National numbers will increase. As a result Sen. Obama's State-to-State votes will increase. As a result Sen. Obama's fundraising numbers will increase. As a result Sen. Obama will be elected president on Nov. 4, 2008. As a result Sen. Obama will be blessed in every area of his life.

I [God ] will bless those who bless you [ Barack Obama], and whoever curses you [ Barack Obama], I [God] will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you [ Barack Obama]." - Genesis 12:3

Additionally, not any of McCain-Palin's WEAK campaign and personal attacks of lies, hatred, fear, racism, and division WILL NEVER PREVAIL against Sen. Obama - this nation's next Commander-in-Chief !!!

You [ Barack Obama], are from God and have overcome them [the enemy's attacks, schemes, and plots ] , because the one [God] who is in you [ Barack Obama] is greater than the one [the enemy ] who is in the world. - 1 John 4:4

No weapon forged against you [ Barack Obama] will prevail, and you [ Barack Obama] will refute every tongue that accuses you [ Barack Obama] . This is the heritage of the servants [ Barack Obama] of the LORD, and this is their [ Barack Obama] vindication from me," declares the LORD. - Isaiah 54:17

" I [ God ] will send my terror ahead of you [ Barack Obama] and throw into confusion every nation you [ Barack Obama] encounter. I [ God ] will make all your [ Barack Obama] enemies turn their backs and run." - Exodus 23:27

The Lord will rescue me [ Barack Obama] from every evil attack and will bring me [ Barack Obama] safely to his heavenly kingdom. - 2 Timothy 4:18

11 For he will command his angels concerning you [ Barack Obama] to guard you [ Barack Obama ] in all your ways; 12 they will lift you [ Barack Obama ] up in their hands, so that you [ Barack Obama ] will not strike your [his] foot against a stone. 13 You [ Barack Obama ] will tread upon the lion and the cobra; you [ Barack Obama ] will trample the great lion and the serpent. - Psalm 91:11-13

I have given you [ Barack Obama ] authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you [ Barack Obama ]. - Luke 10:19

It's time for the American people to get it right and NOT vote for McCain-Palin, instead vote for change. It's time for this country to turn the page and seek a new and better future for ourselves and our children. It's time for REAL change in Washington, it's time to elect Barack Obama for president !

Obama-Biden are the wiser and stronger team to solve the crucial challenges we have in this nation and abroad !

Amen.
