Poll: Obama Holds Edge On Taxes And Family Values; McCain's National Security Advantage Erodes

More stunning numbers in the new Ipsos/McClatchy poll:

On taxes, for example, likely voters now prefer Obama over McCain by a margin of 8 percentage points. This is despite a concerted effort by McCain and running mate Sarah Palin to cast Obama as a tax-and-spend liberal who'd raise taxes on ordinary folks such as Joe the Plumber, an Ohio man whom McCain cited repeatedly in the last debate and since then in ads and on the campaign trail.

On family values, a subject Republicans have used to court Christian conservatives and suburban moderates since the 1980s, likely voters now prefer Obama over McCain by 8 points. That's up from 3 points in mid-September...

Likely voters still prefer McCain over Obama on the issues of national security and foreign policy. However, McCain's advantage on national security, 12 percentage points, had narrowed sharply from the 23- to 28-point edge he'd had in weekly Ipsos/McClatchy polls since Labor Day.

Obama holds the advantage on taxes and family values, and is cutting deeply into McCain's advantage on national security, even though McCain's entire campaign is all about painting him as a tax-and-spend liberal who is culturally different from you and me in some sinister way and doesn't have the toughness or even inclination to prevent you from getting blown up by terrorists.

Everything about McCain screams erosion . . .

user-pic

oh dear god. at first glance, i read "erosion" as "eroticism."

i have to go gouge my eyes out now.

user-pic
user-pic

Okay, my boss says you owe him a new monitor and keyboard, and my wife says you owe me a new job! And I could go for a new set of ribs.

Thanks, this is going viral tonight!

user-pic

haha!

Happy I could be of service...

user-pic

Oh God, that was too funny, but soooo wrong.

user-pic

oh Thank You Hyper!

I've been in a bad mood since last night and that website gave me a good chuckle.

user-pic

Everything about McCain screams "erectile dysfunction."

user-pic

... or 'electile dysfunction'.

I know, I know... corny. I had to.

And the Fun With McCain website is hilarious!

http://thepajamapundit.com/

user-pic

When I see a McCain ad with he an Cindy looking out to sea in matching footed bathtubs I will believe that. Or did youy say "electile" dysfunction?

user-pic

You mean it screams corrosion. He's corroding before our eyes.

user-pic

ATM Obama is at his highest ever on the RCP avg.
2 weeks to go.

user-pic

ok, i think mclame's got obama just about right where he wants him.

now he just needs to figure out what to do with him.

user-pic

Is THIS How McCain Would Treat the ‘American Pie?’

Someone should put up a post from Robert Kennedy Jr. this morning on Morning Joe. He completely took them to school on what actual voter fraud is and their reactions were priceless. When Kennedy explained to them that the actual victims of registration fraud where ACORN you could see they'd been gobsmacked. If someone has a video of it, it really should be posted, if not for Kennedy taking them to the woodshed then just for the information alone. Incredible stuff.

user-pic

Mornin' Joe gobsmacked two mornings in a row?

user-pic

He was on Rachel Maddow's show last night.

Why does Bobby sound like has MS or ALS? His voice shakes like someone who has ALS - god I hope not -

user-pic

From Wikipedia:

...despite suffering from spasmodic dysphonia,[19] a disorder that makes speech difficult and causes the voice to sound quavery.

user-pic

O - he and Diane Rehm!

Now I feel better. It was scaring me - cause he sounded so much like he has ALS.

What a relief!

user-pic

Now we see the dividends of a positive campaign.

user-pic

He's ahead by every measure anyone can come up with.

O my god - we're doing this - I can't believe it. We're electing Barack Obama president.

user-pic

We're getting there, and Bloomberg reported days ago that the equivalent of the nation's largest law firm - 5,000 lawyers strong - is in place to see that the election is not stolen by machines and challengers.

We're getting there.

user-pic

I signed up for the Lawyer training weeks ago, and every single session--and there are about 40 of them, just in DC and NOVA alone--are filled to capacity. I go tonight to Catholic University law Scyhool, and their training is in their main courtroom. You know what it takes to fill that to capacity?

Hell, there are going to be more lawyers than voters.

And I f*cking love it. Let the goons try intimidating anyone. I will slap their asses so fast with an emergency TRO in federal court it will make their little bulbous heads spin.

So fired up. So ready to go.

user-pic

Stupid node thingys.

user-pic

Just shows you're twice as fired up and ready to go.

user-pic

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thanks to all the lawyers out there doing this. You guys are heroes!

user-pic

Thank you thank you!

user-pic

I can't think of a better time and place to be a lawyer. Thank you for your service, sir.

user-pic

That's just 5000 lawyers in Florida; there are thousands more in other states.

I served on the Florida legal election protection team in 2004, but things are so much better organized this year, under the Obama campaign. We are fired up and ready to ensure that the Rethuglicans don't try to steal another Florida election!

user-pic

I was a member of the Election Protection PAC in Dallas County in '04 and I can tell that everything is much more organized this time.

I wasn't lawyering for them - I was a poll watcher.

user-pic

Not that I am being complacent (I go for my Lawyer Training for Obama tonight, and am canvassing my little heart out this weekend in the Old Dominion), but I am beginning to worry that my election night activities will be insufficiently grand. I want to somehow be together in a live place watching the returns and drinking and whooping it up, yet at the same time doing so with people I have come to appreciate and know only online in places like this.

Goddamit, Tena, can't you be there and here at the same time?

I swear to God, I am going to be running through the streets of D.C. hugging everyone.

user-pic

If you're out in the DC streets on election night and see a happily delirious guy doing naked laps around M Street, that would be me. If your poor eyes can stand it, be sure to say hi!

user-pic

You and me both baby.

See, I had an idea for Dallas, but I'm going to be here in my little Taos house, behind the Guadalajara Grill where nobody knows I am except a handful of people who know me. I don't know what I'm going to do.

In Dallas I was thinking of driving right over to Oak Cliff and joining the first street party I saw. This morning I was laying there thinking about this and thinking - damn, my nephew and his partner live in Chicago - wish I could get up there and from Dallas it would be easy. From here not so much. -

You're either going to be celebrating with your friends, or watching television screens take us around the world to every celebration on the planet - or both! I expect I'll be sobbing with relief and joy, myself.

user-pic

It's going to be like that scene at the end of Return of the Jedi. I swear to God it is.

user-pic

Does that mean we get to cremate Cheney in a large pyre made up of shredded copies of the Constitution?

user-pic

No, Cheney would have been tossed down that exhaust chute with purple lightning bolts flying out of his stumpy little fingers a few scenes earlier.

user-pic

Who threw him down there? Colin Powell?

user-pic

That works for me! :-D

user-pic

That was a movie.

This is more akin to being invited to the Dawn of Civilization, and being fully aware of the recent Alternative Universe.

This is epochal.

I'll understand if you don't want to hug me.

PS- TPM fix your damn server!

user-pic

Sorry for the multiple posts. The damn TPM server kept saying it couldn't process my request.

user-pic

Don't believe it. It's always telling me that it didn't work and 9x out of 10 it's fine. Just hit 'back' and reload and see if it worked. (this coming from a guy who posted about 8 identical blogs--learning's a bitch sometimes)

user-pic

I'm with Maddow on this one; let's not pop the champagne corks just yet. As she pointed out on her show last night, there's a lot out there working against the Dems (including the Dems themselves).

user-pic

Curse you Biden and your ambiguous statements that the Republicans can take out of context!

user-pic

Why do family values and taxes hate America?

user-pic

mcShame: If you're poor, you can have a chance to wear Palin's "used clothes." Maybe they'll hold a raffle?

Next: used health care.

user-pic

Yeah - I believe that one.

She's going to give up $150,000 worth of clothes and shoes that fit her?

No she's not.

user-pic

LOL. I was thinking the same thing. She's definitely taking something home for efforts. Plus she's going to need the wardrobe when she runs in 2012.

user-pic

It was like a makeover show or Pretty Woman. The McCain campaign turned her from a hooker into a....um....hooker?

user-pic

From a street level hooker to a slightly more high class call girl.

user-pic

But if they say she'll give em away, are they saying they know she'll never be VP?

Get yur used health care! Hold yur leaking water. Bypass world class care. Try a Wassilla GP for your next delivery!

user-pic

Used nodes - available here.

user-pic

She is only saving something nice to wear to Bristol's wedding.

When is the wedding by the way?

user-pic

It was initially set for Nov 4. Now I think it's postponed till Spring. (after the miscarriage?)

user-pic

OOooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!

LOL!

user-pic

Oh, that's cold!

user-pic

Sadly, these people leave me cold.

user-pic

She is only saving something nice to wear to Bristol's wedding.

When is the wedding by the way?

user-pic

I got the hiccups.

user-pic

Just as soon as they get the old shotgun polished up.

user-pic

Everybody but the "pregnant" kid got new clothes!

user-pic

And who is going to follow up on that promise to see if she keeps it?

There's no requirement that she do that - sell the clothes. And I don't think she will.

No way , no how, no she won't.

user-pic

Yup. If you take a bunch of bags to Good Will, who knows what's in them?

user-pic

This is a special occasion, therefore the whole family will also be wearing shoes.

I can't wait to see the wedding highlights while watching COPS.

user-pic

Does Neiman's have a maternity department? ;-)

user-pic

There is no way she is giving up those clothes and go back to her Wal-Mart-wear.

She can pay the taxes on those clothes with the $3,200 per person she receives from the state of Alaska. That's $22,400. No state income tax in Alaska.

Of course, she'll gladly return the clothes that Todd, the kids and Levi received.

user-pic

Guys I promise you you don't have to hit submit again no matter what response you get - no nodes, server hung up, page wouldn't open.

It doesn't matter. Reload and look - your comment will in fact be there.

Hardly anything I post posts normally. But if you just open a new page and then open comments before you hit submit again -you'll see.

user-pic

COMPLETELY OFF TOPIC, BUT...
I was thinking of you last night while watching 'Taxi to the Dark Side'. I kind of shared your sentiments on Colin Powell, but there is good evidence that he was lied to by people he trusted to get him to say the things that we dislike him for, and those things were laid bare in the film. Just sayin'(even though not really relevant to discussion at hand).

user-pic

That's one of the reasons Powell left the administration.

user-pic

But he never bothered to come clean about what was going on and he knew and he let Bush's entire 2d term go by and to this day has done and said nothing to stop the torture, the illegal imprisonment, the international scandal of this administration.

user-pic

Colin Powell is the Bush-Cheney Albert Speer.

He won't admit to himself let alone the rest of the world what he knew was going on - he's a fucking moral coward.

user-pic

I'll play Devil's advocate for a moment:

It could be that, because he is a military man, he values loyalty and the chain of command.

That certainly doesn't make it right.

user-pic

If you use Firefox and open several tabs (cntrl-t), you can switch to other pages while your comment is searching for nodes or whateverthehell it needs . . .

user-pic

Looking at these polls, I'm soooooo happy I decided to remain in DC just a little bit longer. I'm taking a job out in Europe in a few months, but managed to delay my start date long enough so I could see Obama inaugurated in DC. I'm not going to miss this piece of history!

I've spent 8 years in the city - nearly all of them under Bush - and now I'm leaving just when things seem to be turning round (politically speaking). Damn it!

user-pic

Just a thought. Does donating clothes to recently laid off women Wall Street Executives to get them to go vote rank up there with cigarettes for the homeless in the "voter fraud" category at FOX?

user-pic

If she gets a $150,000 tax deduction for her donations will that cover the taxes she didn't pay on her per diems and kids' travel?

Oh, never mind...the $150,000 wasn't hers to start with. It was funded by us taxpayers who checked "yes" on our tax forms to pay for the presidential election.

user-pic

What's the difference between a pit bull and a hockey mom?

Apparently it's $150,000 worth of foreign designed clothes from Neiman Marcus.

Wow, I guess that joke isn't as good with the real punch line. :(

user-pic

Help me out here; why does Pollster.com have Obama doing worse than before -- he's down to 285 from a high (as I recall) of 330. I thought he was doing better. McCain's numbers are also down but not by as much. Is it just Florida and North Carolina going back & forth?

user-pic

SP is the real life remake of the movie 'Pretty Woman'.

Small town whore. Mysteriously plucked out of nowhere by a (much) older millionaire. Taken to all sorts of events to be oogled over. Bought thousands (and thousands) of dollars of 'pretty clothes'. Claims to want the dream (or run the Senate, or rule the world).

But in this movie - The millionaire (and the nation) kicks this 2 faced revisionist nut job to the curb. Then the whore goes back to walk the streets of Wasilla.

A feel good comedy/tragic/reality sort of epic. An Aesop fable for modern times.

user-pic

You are right on all counts, except that the Hollywood story usually goes with the hooker with a heart of gold. In Palin's case, the heart contains nothing but dry rot.

user-pic

Ahhhh! I'm getting so frustrated with this site today. It is worse than ever. Every single comment bounces back to the error page and it takes a good two minutes to post.

user-pic

Palin told James Dobson on Monday that she's putting the outcome of the election in God's hands.
