Poll: McCain Stumbling Badly On Economic Crisis
Here's yet another piece of evidence that John McCain has really fumbled in his reactions to the economic crisis: By a more than 2-1 margin, registered voters in the new Pew poll say he's done a bad job explaining how he would handle it.
Do you think (candidate) has done an excellent, good, only fair, or poor job of explaining how he would handle the current problems with financial institutions and markets?Obama: Excellent/Good 48%, Fair/Poor 47%
McCain: Excellent/Good 29%, Fair/Poor 67%
The poll also shows that registered voters trust Obama over McCain to handle the crisis by 47%-33%. In the overall horse race, Obama leads 49%-42% among likely voters.
This would all suggest that if McCain's pseudo-suspension was in any way meant to create the impression that he was up to handling the economy, it clearly didn't work.

Bed time in Europe. I trust you all will follow the debate and leave a ton of insightful comments as usual.
Obama puts it away tonight.
All over but the whining from the right that it isn't fair that their Swift Boat Shit isn't working this year.

I am not counting my chickens. Obama needs to remain cool and collected, but anything can happen in a debate. I am a little more nervous than usual.

One stunt might work. Two? Maybe. But he's been pulling a lot of stunts and that one was kind of comical.

Another good news:
"The Republican National Committee is halting presidential ads in Wisconsin and Maine, turning its attention primarily to usually Republican states where GOP nominee John McCain shows signs of faltering" (AP).

Let me add to that, "Pennsylvania is the only Democratic leaning swing state apparently left in the party's [RNC] ad campaign."
Keep this in mind it is only RNC that is pulling out, not the McCain campaign.

T, I did not write that: it was AP. I only did C&P. Note the language, it says, "apparently," meaning by and large. The one that you saw in NM may already have been paid for. Now they know it's futile to invest in NM. And you don't get refund; RNC wish they did.

The suspension was stupid. As Obama pointed out, a president should have been able to do two things at one time. And it didn't work either, which really hurt him.
But to the direct point of the question, I have to give McCainan F also. I'm following the race really closely and even I only have a vague idea what he's planning to fix the mess. Something about a capital gains tax cut (as if anyone has any capital gains these days) and, uh, well, that's all I can think of. He's been tone deaf to the whole economic crisis and to the mood of the country in general. Ayers my ass. Who cares?!
October 15, 2008 3:52 PM | Reply | Permalink
I think there are a couple of things that McCain has done that speaks volumes about where he is coming from and his mind set.
The Ayres issue, and the links with the Chicago "machine" that McCain is imagining. Who cares about these issues these days (even if they were true), they are ancient history to most of us - well, unless you are over the age of 70.
...oh.
McCain is living in the past, just where he wants to keep the country.

Thank you Jesse for swinging FL back to McCain. :(
Why don't people learn to Shut The Fuck Up in the last month or two of a campaign? There are going to be people out there like Taheri who will happily push it hard.
For info on the hack that Taheri is:

Not that I doubt Jesse said all of this.
Dems... we just can't help shooting ourselves in the foot.

I think you're giving Jesse WAY too much credit. No one takes anything he says seriously. To say nothing of the fact that he in no way, shape or form speaks for Obama.
And your comment sort of assumes that Jesse is on Obama's side. I'm not so sure of that.
October 15, 2008 4:04 PM | Reply | Permalink
Even on Morning Joe, it's pretty difficult to take seriously someone as speaking for Obama when the last time we heard from him this someone was talking about doing "surgery" on Obama.
October 15, 2008 4:08 PM | Reply | Permalink
In fact, judging from certain accidentally overheard comments made by Jesse, there's every reason to think he (Jesse) is not particularly thrilled that Obama will be the first AA president rather than himself or his own handpicked successor.

Don't you remember he wanted cut O's nuts, in that, too, on Fox?
The Obama campaign quickly distanced from it by saying Jesse is not part of the campaign and does not represent it.

You're not paying attention - it's the economy, stupid.
There are people out there who think Obama was himself involved with a terrorist organization, and they still plan on voting for him. Why? Because they think he'll be better on the economy.
So please, relax. Jesse Jackson is *not* going to sink Obama's hopes of winning Florida.
In fact, the funniest comment I've read today said that the most damaging thing McCain could ever hope to do to Obama before the election is to endorse him.

I think you overstate the amount of traction this is likely to get. Shiny-object distractions like this have reached saturation and are being tuned out.
Don't worry about JJ wagging his tongue. BigO will take FL.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed. He and the Campaign haver busted their ass to turn FL around, and the Economy of course has helped a great deal. I'm just loathed to see anything pop up that gives Rove-Schmidt and angle to try to play down in FL. We've seen all across the country that there are a ton of dumb voters who buy this bullshit. I'm not even going to say that chunks of the Jewish vote in FL have to be dumb. Just fence sitters who are "concerned". They've almost come around, and this pushes them back over the fence.

Not that I doubt Jesse said all of this.
I would doubt it unless independently confirmed. Anything Amir Taheri says is presumptively a lie, including "a," "an" and "the."
Anyway, it won't work. Sarah Palin has already scared the Jewish seniors in Florida (including my grandmother) much more than a retread like Jesse Jackson ever could.

Jesse isn't on Obama's side. But he's *far* from being on McCain's side.
Most people don't think Obama is a terrorist. Some do:
http://yglesias.thinkprogress.org/archives/2008/10/al_jazeera_on_ohio_voters.php
Most people don't give a serious crap what Obama's policy on Israel will be. Some do, and comments including "Zionists who have controlled American policy for decades" will set off alarm bells in the heads of those who had concerns that Obama doesn't support Israel enough.
Obama's message in Florida has been sinking in very well in the past few weeks. If something doesn't slow it down, that state will go the way PA and MI have gone - strongly to Obama by the end.
This is something that has the potential to play poorly to a chunk of the voters who can swing in both directions. The McCain camp already saw this, are making hay with it, and no doubt it's getting added to every canvasing, soft media and push polling item they will be aiming at the Jewish community in FL (and elsewhere) from here to 11/4.
Perhaps Jesse doesn't want to see Obama win a landslide. More likely, Jesse just can't shut the fuck up when a mic is infront of him.

Maybe someone with some pull can convince McCain to suspend his campaign because of the DOW drop today and announce it at the debate.
I think this would be a real POWER move by McCain.

A nice sign before the debate, CNN has finally moved Virginia over to Obama's column, bringing their EV for him to 277. Nice little talking point to have floating out there as the CNN pundits talk about what McCain "needs to do" tonight.

But somehow have Colorado and Florida as "toss-ups."
By every indication, those are at least "Lean Obama."
October 15, 2008 4:38 PM | Reply | Permalink
I agree. But as some have noted, a lot in the MSM had kept the EV at 264. It took double digit leads in VA to convince CNN to switch it. I think they'd say that since they went "red" in 2004, Obama needs double digit leads before they're satified it's leaning his way. They want it to be as tight as race as possible of course.
